W elcome to the May/June edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill.

No doubt your household, like mine, was gripped by election fever. Not without reason. It was a brutal campaign where more than mud was slung and more than reputations got hurt. Imagine, then, how much nastier it might have been had anybody been standing against me.

The turnout was frankly disappointing. Me and a bloke I bribed. Yet it was not unexpected. The votes were counted. I got both of them.

I was duly returned as editor, bruised, scarred but not deterred, to resume my reign here at Inside Magazine. I know that I promised much during my campaign, but, unfortunately, I shall be fulfilling none of them. I know I said you’d all have luxury yachts, but the funds aren’t there after all. On resuming office, I discovered that I’d got the figures horribly wrong.

Sorry if I misled you. But I’m back now for another term, and the only pledge that I make is that this term will be exactly like the previous seventeen.

M r Bosanquet was somewhat concerned. “I’m somewhat

concerned,” he said to Mrs Bosanquet.

Two years ago, in 1863, the competition had been a disaster. Too few entrants. Very concerning. The idea had been sound enough – encourage the poor to grow plants, with which to decorate their humble homes. The idea had not been – and at this thought Mr Bosanquet’s concern grew – it had not been to cultivate those difficult plants that they had chosen. These were, after all, poor and unscientific people with limited attention spans. They needed things which would be easily cared for. For 1865, there would be different sections. And prizes. And, best of all, a special class for servants. (This had been tried in Bloomsbury with considerable success.) Although Mr Bosanquet attached less importance to this class, there was no doubt that many servants had time on their hands. They could do a whole lot worse than the cultivation of a few plants.

There were also to be special classes for the inmates of any Workhouse and the boys of any Shoeblack Brigade. And the best two potted

dahlias. The prizes would be enticing. For the best plant of all, a real geranium was to be awarded.

I was thinking of this just the other day, sitting in my garden, admiring my magnificent bindweed, and watching the squirrel nick the birds’ food. It wasn’t exactly that an apple fell on my head, since the only apples in my garden are the mouldy cores that Mr Fox brings. It was, nevertheless, a moment of insight. Why did my house have this bit of grass behind it, with squirrels and weeds and apple cores? And when did the likes of me first get to enjoy this opulent splendour? It is a relatively recent development for ordinary folk to have a garden to enjoy. My parents both grew up in the terraced slums of pre-war London, where, if there was anything at all at the back of your house, it was a loo, some scrawny chickens, a broken bike and a perhaps an apple core. To trace the history of my bindweed-arium, we must go back to Mr Bosanquet’s competition of 1865.

The rich, of course, have always had their gardens, from 2,000BC, when the Egyptians cultivated the lotus flower for jewellery, or King Nebuchadnezzar’s Hanging Gardens of Babylon in the 6th century BC. By the year zero, the Persians were constructing irrigation channels into fruit-bearing orchards.

The Utopian thinker Robert Owen in 1842 wrote of the next Millennium that ordinary people “will be surrounded by gardens, have abundance of space in all directions to keep the air healthy and pleasant. They will have walks and plantations before them". Mind you, in 1800 he had written

“Parents shall be answerable for the conduct of their children”, so that shows the kind of visionary he was – not.

Mr Bosanquet’s competition did not catch on entirely, despite the prize geranium, but, by the 1880s, the middle classes were moving out to the new suburbs of London.

The first municipal ‘garden estate’ was built in Tooting. The London County Council had been formed in 1889 with the power to clear away slums and rebuild planned housing. The Totterdown Fields estate in Tooting was densely built but with space for landscaping and architecture of varied design. Ordinary people could have gardens. It cost 3d to take the tram in to London. The rent for a three room flat was set at six shillings. Affordable to most working people. The movement that culminated in our frantic trips to nurseries began in Tooting.

Totterdown Fields is a far cry from Chelsea’s annual extravaganza, where unpronounceable

plants twine their way around unintelligible architecture, and hopeless fools like me think that they might do the same in their garden at the weekend, unless it rains, or there’s cricket on TV, or there’s a Y in the day, or I take it upon myself to write the history of gardens instead.

But I must stop now and do some weeding. But – oh – wouldn’t you know it? – it’s just starting to rain.

R ehearsals are underway for a performance of Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Gondoliers

given by Chapel End Savoy Players at the Deaton Theatre in E17, at the end of May. With its sparkling songs, witty lyrics, dances and comedy, the show fairly fizzes along. It’s Sullivan at his most tuneful and Gilbert at his most topsy-turveyish.

The Gondoliers also pokes fun at some of the most sensitive parts of society, namely class, politics and religion. As with other G&S operas, the plot is as relevant today as when it was written.

Chapel End Savoy Players - known as CESP - have been performing the Gilbert and Sullivan operas since 1974. Their present venue is the Deaton Theatre in the grounds of Forest School in Snaresbrook. The performing space boasts a state-of-the-art lighting rig and, unusually, a thrust stage so that the audience surround the action and become closely involved.

The Director is Leon Berger, who has successfully directed two previous Savoy operas with CESP, namely Patience and The Yeomen of the Guard. Leon is a highly-accomplished professional baritone singer in his own right, and is well-known in G&S circles, having performed in all 14 G&S operas both here and abroad.

The Musical Director is Graham Offord, who started as company as a singer and graduated to being its conductor in 1980. Graham knows his Gilbert & Sullivan intimately, and the music is in safe hands.

The company is delighted to have several strong principal singers new to the company. In addition, the ranks of the chorus of the opera company have been swelled this year by new recruits, mainly from London Forest Choir and Southgate Opera, both well-acclaimed local choral groups.

CESP last performed The Gondoliers in 2002 at the Chingford Assembly Hall (the above photo is from that performance). However their current Director, Leon, has fast-forwarded the action in his version to the 1950s, to the time of those classic Italian movies like La Dolce Vita and Roman Holiday. He describes his productions as “traditional with a twist”.

So why not treat yourself to a fantastic show, great music and wonderful costumes, all accompanied by an orchestra. There are disabled facilities, and refreshments will be available in the interval. Tickets range from £14 to £10 depending on concession., while all under 18s can see any show for a fiver. There are 5 performances at the Deaton Theatre, from May 28th to 31st. Thursday, Friday and Saturday shows start at 7:30pm, while Saturday and Sunday Matinees start at 2:30pm.

Free transport will be available to the Theatre from Snaresbrook tube station from 1:30pm for both Matinee performances, with a free return to Snaresbrook after the show. No need to pre-book – just turn up!

M y Double Life 1 ‘This Dark Wood – A Journey into

Light’ is the first of a two volume autobiography by Nicholas Hagger, a well- known intellectual and educator. Unlike most autobiographies that are written by a ‘ghost’ writer, this is written by Nicholas Hagger himself.

It is a personal history full of wonder, excitement and insight. It is not without problems, however, but as the author believes that difficulties lead to greater understanding of life, there was no shying away from reporting the most personal of events.

The Holly Bush (now with a spelling change), The Owl Inn, the pillow mounds at High Beach, Dick Turpin’s Cave (no longer there), St Mary’s Church Loughton, Strawberry Hill, Warren Hill, Grimston’s Oak, Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge, the Church of the Holy Innocents, Chingford Fairground, Green Ride, Peartree Plain, Long Hills, Fairmead Bottom, Baldwin’s Hill, Lost Pond, Blackweir Pond are some of the local areas mentioned with much affection.

The book cover could be a photo of Larkswood or Knighton Wood in springtime with the sun shining through a forest of bluebells, a scene which highlights the title of the early section from his birth in 1939 to his leaving the Secret Intelligence Service 1973. As a child, teenager and young man, he was studious, deep thinking, reflective and curious about so many aspects of his own psychology, politics, history, philosophy and poetry. Due to his considerable writing abilities and vast experience, he explains complex topics in detail with ease and grace. He finds intricate patterns and describes numinous, spiritual and otherworldly experiences, such as premonitions and visions and once met a psychic who made some unlikely but accurate predictions. He reports interesting meetings with many prestigious people along the way (some of

whom committed suicide and some were murdered). During his espionage days, his home was bugged, he was followed on foot and had his home ransacked. Deep dedication and commitment to his ideals underpinned his spying.

Nicholas Hagger is a prolific and talented writer of plays, poems, short stories and full length books on a very wide range of topics (one of which is ‘A View of Epping Forest’). The text is peppered with poems and quotes from classical works which inform his ideas and beliefs. Though an intellectual, he also is highly practical and combines these leanings with

mystical interests. He relates incidents from his childhood and university days and his dangerous work in Iraq, Japan and China. In this book he reveals while undercover as a teacher and journalist, he acted as an espionage agent and suffered a deep personal betrayal. Throughout this time he gate-crashed an Ambassador’s reception on the Queen’s Birthday, was invited to join the Mafia, was told that the Rothschild family controlled MI6 and the Bank of England! and was threatened with execution! It was a standing joke amongst his top secret handlers that his old green Volkswagon was the most photographed car in the world.

The author attended Oaklands School, Loughton; Chigwell School and then Worcester College in Oxford and purchased three local schools employing 230 teachers, Oaklands, Normanhurst and Coopersale Hall.
