W elcome to the November/December edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill.
As the editor of this magazine I’m often asked things like “What is life about?” and “What is the square root of 10?” and “Why do you wear that silly hat?” I can’t answer all of these things (although I thought the hat was quite fetching). But it is customary for these seasonal letters to include some timely gardening tips. Myself, towards winter, I plant bulbs and tubers in the soil so that the fox can dig them up during the cold months ahead. It’s also a good idea to dig up any tender annuals then forget all about them. Oh, and mulch. Whatever that is. Hope that helps. Always a pleasure to be of use. I’ll be back in the New Year with some nifty cookery tips.

T his is another story of the quite-goods. Of the runners-up, the also rans and the ones that just ran
away. Of the flames that never flared too fiercely, or flickered for a while and then faded. We’re not all immortals. Some of us are quite good, though. And some of the quite-goods have their moments, when they flicker and fade.
Ambroise-Francois had a problem, and the problem was his daughter. He’d tried everything. He’d hidden her clothes and he’d taken away her candles so that she had neither heat nor light at night. But still she read. She read and read and read. And, as if a girl reading was not of itself sufficiently sinful, the girl was reading – and he caught his breath as he thought this to himself – she was reading about mathematics! Now Ambroise-Francois was a decent man, middle class, a merchant, of some wealth, and with standing in the community. What if word got out of his errant daughter? He’d be the laughing-stock. Clients would avoid him. Business would ebb away. Who’d buy anything from a man whose daughter read books? And not
just any books. Books about – and again he caught his breath – books about mathematics!
Maybe he and his wife were to blame. Caring parents, they had nevertheless allowed little Sophie to look at the books in the library. The streets of Paris in 1789 were, after all, far too dangerous for a 13 year old girl. And they weren’t to know that she would read that book in particular. It was just an unfortunate thing, really. He’d never read it. In truth, he’d never read any of them. Books, after all, were just something he felt he ought to have. But she’d been drawn to the story of Archimedes. His work. His life. And his death – he’d been involved in a mathematical problem that he’d drawn in the dust and failed to reply to a soldier. The soldier speared him to death.
“Numbers must be very interesting, papa,” she had said to Ambroise-Francois. And thereupon she had begun her studies in earnest.
“It’s no use,” Ambroise-Francois eventually said to his wife. “She’s incurable. She will have her way.”
When Sophie was 18, the Ecole Polytechnique opened. Of course, women were barred. But

Sophie got notes passed to her and she immersed herself in the newest theories of mathematics. The theoretician, J L LeGrange, was given one of her papers which she submitted under a pseudonym, and he liked what he read enough to want to meet ‘Monsieur LeBlanc’. Except that this LeBlanc turned out to be not only female, but, worse yet, not even an aristocrat. LeGrange swallowed his pride and introduced Sophie to circles of scientists and mathematicians. They also weren’t thrilled at the idea of a non-male, non-aristocrat having ideas of their own. It wasn’t right at all.
10 years later, Sophie was corresponding with the German mathematician, Carl Friedrich Gauss, who was working on number theory. Much of the mathematical world was striving to establish a proof of Fermat’s last theorem, a subject which still exercises some of our greatest minds, and which had remained unsolved since 1637. A proof eventually emerged in 1995, but Sophie Germain took the first successful steps towards its proof.
But if Fermat’s last theorem doesn’t rock your world, I know what will. Sophie Germain next turned her attention to – wait for it – the mathematics of the vibration of elastic surfaces. She entered a competition with a paper, the only entrant, and she lost. Her anonymous paper
lacked the necessary formal education. Her third attempt, in 1816, was successful. And if the topic sounds a tad dull, well, they couldn’t have built the Eiffel Tower without it.
In 1831, an honorary degree was on its way to her from the University of Gottingen. Sophie, aged 55,
died of breast cancer before it reached her. By then, she had been the first woman to attend the Institut de France, and the first to attend sessions at the Academy of Sciences in her own right. She was a flame that burned very brightly indeed, despite the dampening, drowning dousing prejudices of the era.

A utomatically activated drawers and cabinets have featured in several of our top of the range
kitchens recently. These use servo assistance so that door and drawers will open with a light touch to the front of the door/drawer. This adds extra elegance and functionality to handleless kitchens.
Steam ovens are gaining popularity in upmarket kitchen installations. There are several models that have a compartment for water which is then made into steam for cooking. Some of the newer models are plumbed in and so do not require filling up. Steam cooking is a great way to keep meats moist and can speed up cooking times dramatically.
Duplication of appliances is becoming more and more popular. The most used is an extra built under fridge to go along with the integrated fridge-freezer. We have also fitted dual dishwashers, which can be useful when hosting parties or simply when one machine is in use. A dual appliance set up is not as expensive as you might imagine as it takes the space of a cabinet in the kitchen. Wine cabinets are now a regularly fitted accessory. They are specifically designed to keep your wine at the correct temperature with more sophisticated appliances having different temperature zones. It can also make a great visual feature and display your collection which would otherwise be hidden away. A small but important addition to the functionality of the kitchen is the docking station. With the rise of flexible working the kitchen can be made to be an ideal space to work at home from. For this there are various solutions but all will incorporate power points, usb sockets and tv monitor set ups.

S econd hand cars and home improvements are among the most common consumer
complaints identified by Essex Trading Standards.
Trading Standards experts have released a Top 10 of the issues residents most frequently sought advice about in the last 12 months.
The top ten includes: 1) Second hand cars 2) Home maintenance and improvements 3) Furniture 4) Large domestic appliances 5) Glazing products and installations 6) Food and drink 7) Clothing 8) Car repairs and servicing 9) Professional services 10) Personal computers, accessories and
software
Essex County Council lead member for Trading Standards, Cllr Roger Walters, said: “The team receives thousands of calls about second hand cars each year and there are a number of simple checks you can make to avoid a bad experience. These include checking the car’s value online, viewing it in daylight with a family member with more experience of buying a car and of course taking the car for a test drive.
“Another key priority for us is home maintenance and improvements, which covers the issue of rogue and doorstep traders. We advise never to agree to any work from a trader who knocks on the door and to check any leaflets through the door as these can contain false addresses and pay as you go telephone numbers that cannot be traced.”
Other advice includes: Always get at least three quotations in
writing for any work you need carried out. Use a Buy With Confidence business, audited
and approved by Trading Standards – the three nearest to your postcode can be obtained by calling 03454 040 506 or via www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk.
Never pay for the work upfront.
A campaign which aims to prevent elderly people becoming victims of rogue traders was launched by Essex County Council, Essex Police and Age UK Essex earlier this year. Be Sure at the Door aims to help potential victims – often elderly people – to avoid falling prey to rogue traders.
If you need advice and guidance in regard to any consumer issue please call the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline, who handle calls for Trading Standards on 03454 040 506.

E ast London Ladies Circle is a member run organisation which aims to bring local women together forming long
lasting friendships and hosting fundraising events for local and global charities. We welcome ladies from all around East London including areas such as Barking, Bexley, Chingford, Edmonton, Enfield, Leyton, Leytonstone, Newham, Redbridge, Romford, Stratford, Walthamstow, Wanstead and Woodford. However we do welcome ladies living outside those areas if they are willing to commute for events and meetings, everyone is welcome. As a group we do a range of different activates together, we have tea and coffee dates, visit the theatre, have pampering nights, bowling, wine tasting, and we try to have new experiences such as horse riding. We expand our social lives and expand our connections by getting to know each other, while at the same time having fun and having new experiences. This summer we offered our ladies the chance to take part in the Olympic park guided Tour and Boat Tour, as well as taking the lift on the ArcelorMittal Orbit (UK’s Tallest Sculpture) which delivers the view of London skyline up to 20 miles in the distance. Through our meetings and events we form a unique bond of friendship.
ELLC are a part of the larger international organisation Ladies Circle that was founded in 1932. The first group was Bournemouth (No.1 Circle) who first met in 1932 as a social group for the wives of Round Tablers. Now separate from Round Table, anyone can join and the club is still going strong; standing as a testament of how Ladies Circle has moved forward to a modernised era over 80 years that it has been running. Ladies Circle has spread widely across the UK with circle groups in Northern Ireland, York, Sheffield, Norwich and Isle of Wight, forming friendships and working for the benefit of the community.
The work and success of Ladies Circle has been greatly recognised and appreciated by the different charities that circles work with. Take the Essex Ladies Circle for example who raised over £40,000 last year for Children in Need, or Chelmsford Ladies who supported the victims of the Nepal earthquake by selling ALL4Nepal Pins. Whereas the Redditch Ladies Circle raised over £200 for the Little Princess Trust, a
charity proving real hair wigs to boys and girls across the UK, and The Kingfisher Ladies dedicated their afternoon collecting for the Redditch Food Bank. These are only a few examples of how Ladies Circle work together and give back to their own community and help those in need.
Our East London Ladies Circle has just started and we are looking for new members who seek to make new friends and do something positive for the community they live in and for those in need for help. We want to create a group of friends who meet up once or twice a month for socials and for fundraising or charity events. If this sounds like something you’d be interested in, please email [email protected] and check out our Facebook page www.facebook.com/EastLondonLadiesCircle to stay updated with upcoming events.
We are very much looking forward to hearing from you and welcoming you into our circle of friendship and compassion.

There are high hopes that the 2016 Festival will receive even higher entry levels now that the majority of entries will be made on the new website, (www.stratfordmusicfestival.org.uk). The 2016 Festival Syllabus for next February's event is now available online and in print.
Feedback from competitors showed that the website, with its facility to enter and pay online, made everyone's lives easier and more efficient in 2015. The website has all information on venues, classes, dates and times for 2016.
The Stratford and East London Music Festival will take place from the 8th and 9th of February 2016 at St. Mary’s Church in South Woodford for Choirs, Orchestras, Bands and Organ and from the 15th-
20th February 2016 at Forest School in Snaresbrook for all other music, speech and drama classes.
The SELMF was founded in 1882 by John Spencer Curwen, making it the UK’s oldest music and drama festival. The entry fee for the first Festival was 2s 6d (12p) for Solo Entries, 5s 0d (25p) for Quartets and 10s 0d (50p) for Choirs. Originally it was only open to those who lived in Stratford, Leyton, Wanstead, Walthamstow, Woodford, Plaistow, Forest Gate, Canning Town, Victoria Docks and Leytonstone.
Many musicians and actors can trace the start of their careers from success at the SELMF. These include Jonathan Antoine, (of Charlotte and Jonathan fame) and Charlotte Barbour-Condini who reached the final of the BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2012.
There is also be a facility on the website for people to buy branded Stratford and East London Music Festival merchandise.
