In our busy suburbancommunities driving isessential to an independ-ent lifestyle, and the deci-sion to stop driving is asensitive, personal one.In addition to creatingpractical challenges, giv-ing up driving may stirfeelings of anger, frustra-tion, isolation and de-pression, so it is not to betaken lightly.

With the significance ofdriving in mind, familymembers can help olderdrivers make the transitionfrom driver to passenger.But how do you initiate thedifficult conversation? Theexperts at AARP DriverSafety and The Hartford of-fer some advice.

First, help older driversstay safe behind thewheel for as long as pos-sible. Adult children canhelp aging parents regu-larly maintain their vehi-cles. And if it’s time for anew car, adult childrencan help identify choiceswith new technologiesthat can enhance safedriving, like reverse mon-itoring systems. Older

drivers can brush up ontheir driving skills withAARP Driver Safety’scourse, which is specifi-cally designed to helppeople 50 and older re-fresh their driving skills.To find a classroomcourse near you, call888-227-7669, or visitwww.aarp.org/f inda-course; or sign up for anonline course. Second, family mem-bers should observe anolder loved one’s drivingby taking a ride as pas-senger and keeping aneye out for warning signs.It’s important to look forchanges in driving abili-ties. These signs include:

• Frequent “close calls”or near-crashes

• Unexplained dents orscrapes on vehicles,fences, mailboxes, garagedoors, etc.

• Getting lost, even infamiliar locations

• Difficulty seeing orfollowing traffic signals,road signs and pavementmarkings

• Slower responses tounexpected situations,trouble moving the driv-ing foot from the gas tothe brake, and confusingthe two pedals

• Misjudging gaps intraffic at intersections oron highway entrance andexit ramps

• Experiencing roadrage or inspiring it in oth-er drivers

• Easily becoming dis-tracted while driving

• Difficulty turningaround to check the rearview while backing up orchanging lanes

• Receiving multipletickets or warnings fromlaw enforcement officers.

Third, if you notice apattern of warning signsand an increase in fre-quency, then it’s time toinitiate a conversation.It’s important to choosethe right time, place andmessenger.

“It’s important that the

right person initiate theconversation,” says JodiOlshevski, a gerontologistand assistant vice presi-dent at The Hartford. “Re-search indicates that 50percent of married driversprefer to hear about driv-ing concerns from theirspouses first, then doc-tors and finally adult chil-dren. Whoever initiatesthe conversation shouldhave a strong rapportwith the older driver. “

“Whoever it is shouldbe empathetic, armedwith facts about her driv-ing and able to offer ideasfor alternative trans-portation if needed,” Ol-shevski advises.

Avoid bringing up thetopic of driving duringfamily gatherings. In-stead, look for a quiet, pri-vate time when all partiesinvolved will have privacyand minimal distractions.

If you see ice build-upand icicles hanging fromthe eaves of your home,you may have an ice dam,a major cause of roofleaks and energy loss inwinter. Take steps now toprevent ice dams, recom-mends the New YorkState Energy Researchand Development Author-ity (NYSERDA).

Ice dams usually occurafter a heavy snowfalland several days of freez-ing temperatures. Warmair inside your homeleaks into the attic andwarms the underside ofthe roof, causing snowand ice on the roof tomelt. The melted waterdrains along the roof tothe cold overhang and re-freezes, forming an icedam and icicles. The icedam enables the trappedwater to get under theroof shingles, causingwater to leak inside.

If you already have anice dam problem, hire anexpert to solve the imme-diate issue. Don’t climbon your roof, and avoidstanding on the groundand “chipping away” atthe ice. Not only couldyour chipping damagethe roof, but you can beseriously injured byfalling ice, debris or tools.

NYSERDA recommendsthe following ice dam pre-vention tips:

Seal air leaks andtake care of insulationand ventilation.

• Seal air leaks andduct air leaks in your at-tic to stop warm air leak-age, the source of ice damproblems. After sealingleaks, add additional in-sulation in your attic.

• Provide adequate atticventilation so the under-sides of the roof and out-side air are at the sametemperature. Check tomake sure attic insula-tion is not blocking roofventilation. Incorrect ven-tilation can cause moldand mildew problems.

Clean gutters.• If you didn’t clean

leaves and other debrisfrom gutters before thefirst snow, see if you canhave it done now. Thiswill help prevent icebuild-up in gutters.

Hire a participatingcontractor.

I thought it might be fun to pick bits and pieces

out of the last three years of Hello Again and add a

few comments.

Let’s see what we chatted about starting with

the opening paragraph of July 19, 2010.

Issue of July 19, 2010:

Forty-five years ago our family said hello to the

Mohawk Valley with the 1st issue of the Pennysaver.

That issue was mailed during a snowstorm in

January of 1965.

Comment: The thruway was closed at

Canajoharie. The high school gym floor was covered

with sleepers. Route 10 was completely blocked with

snow and remained blocked for a few days.

Issue of Sept. 2, 2010:

While out checking on delivery of your paper (The

Original Valley Pennysaver), we ran into a “one

picture is worth a thousand words” situation. We

passed a farmer with his horse and buggy delivering

three cans of milk. He was sitting in his buggy while

climbing a hill reading his Pennysaver.

Comment: This is what memories are made of.

Issue of Sept. 27, 2010:

We are not just people. We are God-believing,

freedom-loving Americans. We carry the big stick, we

can vote.

Comment: It would appear to some — we the

people are being encouraged to accept huge

government control — both state and federal. Will

we soon become — the one state of America and

not the United States of America or the “changed

to” Socialist State of America with a supreme ruler,

appointed by a ruling body and not by vote?

Question: What is the difference between a huge

in-control-of-everything government and a socialist

government in absolute control?

Issue of Nov. 11, 2010:

Have you ever wished you could travel back in time

to the old barge canal days here in the Mohawk

Valley? A common scene would be wooden barges

pulled by horses, mules, oxen, and even donkeys.

Comment: I could add villages along the canal —

busy with dependable local trade: farm families and

local business owners. Even the banks were locally

owned. Those were the days my friends, we thought

they would never end. And it is too bad, they did

nearly end.

I often stop to wonder about God. How did he ever

create such a beautiful place as our valley? I’m

grateful he did and allows you and me to live here

and enjoy it.

Comment: Amen and amen.

Issue of Dec. 20, 2010:

I spend so much time chatting about Ireland, you

might wonder if I was born over there. No, I was born

in a farmhouse in the township of Middlefield, NY. I

wanted to be close to my mother that day.

Comment: In two more years that birthday —

God willing — will mark 80 years, and the title Valley

Pennysaver will mark 50 years.

Issue of Jan. 3, 2011:

George Bernard Shaw said, “I am an atheist, and

I thank God for it.”

Comment: As my mother often repeated, “As the

Irish man said, ‘Each to his own as Paddy said when

he kissed the pig.’”

Issue of April 28, 2011:

Early in the morning, just a few days ago, two

lonely silos stood side-by-side along Route 5 near

St. Johnsville. Little did they know that by

nighttime a large, extremely well built farm building

would be standing next to them. In one day it was

completely finished.

Comment: A few years ago Amish families moved

into our area, some farmers, carpenters, builders,

handymen, business owners, etc. What a great con-

tribution to our area and way of life. The barn

building: a perfect example of Christian friendship

and helping your fellow man.

Issue of Oct. 15, 2011:

The trouble with some women they get all excited

about nothing — then they marry him.

Comment: No comment.


When the atomic bomb was being developed in the

utmost secrecy at Oak Ridge Tennessee, the workers

— most of whom had no idea what it was all about

— often explained to questioners that “This is where

the front of the horses are made. Then we ship them

to Washington for additional assembly.”

Comment: Is it possible that is where mules and

jack-asses evolved from?

Issue of Nov. 17, 2012:

Don’t stand around doing nothing unless you

want your neighbors to think you have a government

job.

Comment: Have you ever wondered why so many

think government employees do not work very hard?

Yet we know this is not true. Many wonderful hard-

working people have spent their lives working for our

local, county, state, and federal governments.

Comment: The only difference in men and boys is

the cost of their toys. Have you ever been envious?

— No? Everytime I see the Gould’s beautiful green

1930 Model A, I become envious.


Place your faith in the Lord and his promises and

you will have the strength to withstand any

adversity. There are seven days in each week. One is

the Lord’s day. Remember his day and the next time

you talk with him say, “Thank you Lord for my family

and friends.”

Comment: Actually every

day belongs to the Lord. He

allows us to live, prosper,

and enjoy life asking us only

to believe, trust, and obey.

Speak with two or three brokers from different agencies. Ask themthe same questions to compare what they would do to sell yourhome. Some questions to ask include:

• How long have you sold houses in this area?

• How many houses did you sell in the past year?

• What is your commission?

• If I were to work with you, how would you best market my house?

PREPARING YOUR HOME

So you’ve chosen a broker but now you have to get your home ingear. No matter how much or little it costs, its important to do some“spring cleaning” to your home before you put it on the market.Paying even a little attention to the details can make a hugedifference in the appearance of your home and attract moreinterest from prospective buyers. Some ideas include:

(BPT) — As we age, and watch our loved ones growolder, it’s important to think about — and plan for —a time when we may no longer be able to drive. Buthow do we decide when it’s time to transition fromdriver to passenger?

In our busy suburban communities driving is essen-tial to an independent lifestyle, and the decision tostop driving is a sensitive, personal one. In addition tocreating practical challenges, giving up driving maystir feelings of anger, frustration, isolation and depres-sion, so it is not to be taken lightly.

With the significance of driving in mind, familymembers can help older drivers make the transitionfrom driver to passenger. But how do you initiate thedifficult conversation? The experts at AARP DriverSafety and The Hartford offer some advice.

First, help older drivers stay safe behind the wheel foras long as possible. Adult children can help aging par-ents regularly maintain their vehicles. And if it’s timefor a new car, adult children can help identify choiceswith new technologies that can enhance safe driving,like reverse monitoring systems. Older drivers canbrush up on their driving skills with AARP Driver Safe-ty’s course, which is specifically designed to help people50 and older refresh their driving skills. Second, family members should observe an olderloved one’s driving by taking a ride as passenger andkeeping an eye out for warning signs. It’s important tolook for changes in driving abilities. These signs include:

• Frequent “close calls” or near-crashes• Unexplained dents or scrapes on vehicles, fences,

mailboxes, garage doors, etc.• Getting lost, even in familiar locations• Difficulty seeing or following traffic signals, road

signs and pavement markings• Slower responses to unexpected situations, trou-

ble moving the driving foot from the gas to the brake,and confusing the two pedals

• Misjudging gaps in traffic at intersections or onhighway entrance and exit ramps

• Experiencing road rage or inspiring it in other drivers• Easily becoming distracted while driving• Difficulty turning around to check the rear view

while backing up or changing lanes• Receiving multiple tickets or warnings from law

enforcement officers.Third, if you notice a pattern of warning signs and

an increase in frequency, then it’s time to initiate aconversation. It’s important to choose the right time,place and messenger.

“It’s important that the right person initiate the con-versation,” says Jodi Olshevski, a gerontologist andassistant vice president at The Hartford. “Research in-dicates that 50 percent of married drivers prefer tohear about driving concerns from their spouses first,then doctors and finally adult children. Whoever initi-ates the conversation should have a strong rapportwith the older driver.

“Whoever it is should be empathetic, armed withfacts about her driving and able to offer ideas for al-ternative transportation if needed,” Olshevski advises.

Avoid bringing up the topic of driving during family gath-erings. Instead, look for a quiet, private time when all par-ties involved will have privacy and minimal distractions.

While many older Americans are staying safe on theroads and driving longer than ever before, for some,health-related changes in vision, hearing, flexibility orcognitive function can make them less safe behind thewheel. With planning, preparation and sensitivity,families can help make the transition from being adriver to being a passenger a bit easier for older driv-ers and those who love them.

Advice for families coping with anolder driver’s changing abilities

It’s a common misconception thatonly car dealers can perform the rou-tine maintenance and repairs on anewer vehicle that is under warran-ty. In fact, it is law that consumerscan patronize their neighborhood re-pair shop or do the work themselveswithout violating the manufacturer’swarranty, says the Car Care Council.

Consumers are protected by theMagnuson-Moss Warranty Act, en-forced by the Federal Trade Commis-sion (FTC), which prohibits a manu-facturer from voiding the vehiclewarranty because service was doneby a non-dealer. According to theFTC, “It’s illegal for a dealer to deny

your warranty coverage simply be-cause you had routine maintenanceor repairs performed by someoneelse. Routine maintenance often in-cludes oil changes, tire rotations,belt replacement, fluid checks andflushes, new brake pads and inspec-tions.”

“Many motorists wonder if theywill void their factory warranty ifsomeone other than the dealer serv-ices their vehicle,” said Rich White,executive director, Car Care Council.“The truth is that consumers canhave routine repairs performed bytheir local independent repair shopor do the work themselves without

affecting the warranty. It is also im-portant to note that using aftermar-ket parts does not void the warran-ty.”

When using a non-dealer, inde-pendent aftermarket shop to main-tain your vehicle, the council strong-ly recommends keeping records andreceipts for all maintenance that isdone to the vehicle and adhering toscheduled maintenance require-ments. If a warranty claim arises,these records will provide proof thatmaintenance has been done in ac-cordance with the manufacturers’recommendations and requirements.
