STORYLINEMás allá de los golpes, el boxeo es un retrato de la vida: obstáculos, lucha, disciplina, entrega… Cuatro personajes para cada una de las cuatro esquinas del cuadrilátero: Eugenio Espinoza y Ramiro “Clay” Bolaños, dos ídolos ya retirados del boxeo ecuatoriano; César, un niño aspirante a boxeador, y Carlos, un joven boxeador amateur. La Tola Box, una película que nos muestra el lado más humano del boxeo. Una historia de superación y triunfo en el ring y en la vida.

SINOPSISCarlos Mina, joven boxeador de 18 años, vive en una residencia deportiva lejos de su familia. Entrena a diario en La Tola con el profesor Segundo Chango, fundador del gimnasio. En su tiempo libre, Carlos escribe y canta canciones de hip-hop que expresan sus necesidades, inquietudes y aspiraciones. César y Carlos tienen sueños afines: cumplir sus metas como boxeadores para sacar adelante a sus familias.
Por otro lado Eugenio Espinoza y Clay Bolaños, dos leyendas del boxeo ecuatoriano, recuerdan junto a sus admiradores los tiempos de oro del boxeo; disputaron campeonatos mundiales, ganaron dinero, llenaron plazas y coliseos… recorrieron el camino que César y Carlos están iniciando en una época en la que el boxeo nacional ha sido casi olvidado. La Tola Box va más allá de las peleas y lo triunfos. Se trata de un documental observacional que nos muestra el lado más humano de los boxeadores amateur y profesionales.
El barrio La Tola está ubicado en la cima de una loma en el centro histórico de Quito. Como un mirador que observa todo el caos y belleza del casco colonial de la capital ecuatoriana, está el gimnasio de boxeo de La Tola, en donde entrenan y se forman día a día los mejores boxeadores del país.
César, un niño de 13 años, aspira a ser un boxeador reconocido. Vive con sus dos hermanas y sus dos pequeños sobrinos a quienes cuida a diario: cocina para ellos, al mismo tiempo juega entre responsabilidades de la casa y deberes del colegio. Cuando llega la tarde, César va al gimnasio de La Tola a entrenar con pasión y disciplina.

Nace en Quito – Ecuador, en 1980. Su ópera prima, el documental “La Tola Box”, se estrenó en los principales cines del Ecuador y fue nominada a mejor documental iberoamericano en los Premios Platino, España. Actualmente está desarrollando su primer largometraje de ficción “Sansón” con el que participó en el Screenplay Development Found del Festival de Amiens, Francia, 2013; y en Produire au Sud del Festival 3 Continents de Nantes, Francia, 2014. Estudió cine en la Escuela Nacional de Cine de Argentina (IUNA) y cine documental en la Universidad Popular de Madres de Plaza de Mayo. También estudió música por más de 7 años, especializándose en piano. En el año 2000 ganó el premio internacional de poesía “Valentín Arteaga” realizado en España.Pável imagina el audiovisual como un laberinto en el que explora: el cine como un relato del ser humano en la actualidad, como un narrador de historias que no siempre se pueden, o se quieren, ver o escuchar; el cine como un golpe que sacude al espectador, como un breve momento en el que se reflejan y, quizás, se cumplen los sueños y anhelos del que mira; el cine como una metáfora del mundo.

NOTA DEL DIRECTORDebido al uso de la fuerza que involucra, el boxeo se ha convertido en un deporte rodeado de prejuicios y marginación. Mucha gente, sin conocer, da juicios de valor negativos sobre el boxeo tachándolo de violencia por violencia, de peligroso y poco atractivo. Nada está más lejano que esta opinión, pues se trata de un deporte lleno de técnica y belleza, y así también rodeado de honestidad en el ring. El Gimnasio de Boxeo del barrio La Tola, ubicado en el centro histórico de Quito, es un lugar mágico en su atmósfera, en su arquitectura y en su poética innata. Los personajes que concurren a dicho lugar son generosos, llenos de vida y de sueños.
Hacer esta película ha sido un aprendizaje, un viaje único e inolvidable. Se trata de un merecido homenaje y reconocimiento a estas historias poco visualizadas y a este deporte que en años pasados le trajo muchos títulos al Ecuador.
“La Tola Box” retrata a los “pequeños” personajes del boxeo. Personajes que dan todo de sí para llegar a cumplir sus metas. Se trata de una película sobre el lado humano de este deporte, de las dificultades y la sensibilidad que están detrás de los guantes. En el año 2008 empezó este viaje. La idea partió del deseo de explorar el universo del boxeo: su poética, sus imágenes, sus historias. Un deporte en el que el cuerpo tiene que aprender a resistir golpes, a absorberlos y, con la misma o mayor energía, devolver el golpe al adversario. No se trata de un golpe cualquiera, es un impacto lanzado con técnica, con pensamiento y creatividad. El boxeo es un ballet de combate, una gimnasia de la fuerza. Siempre me sentí atraído por estos elementos y cuando empecé a involucrarme con el mundo pugilístico, descubrí la riqueza de las historias que lo rodean. Historias duras y difíciles, pero poéticas y envolventes.

Licenciada en Cine y Video de la Universidad San Francisco de Quito y graduada de la maestría en Ciencias Sociales (mención Sociología) de la Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO). Inició su experiencia en producción en la promoción de la película “Qué Tan Lejos”, éxito en taquilla a nivel nacional en 2006. Fue 4ta asistente de dirección del largometraje de ficción “Prometeo Deportado”, estrenada en cines comerciales en 2010. Coordinadora de Producción (unidad Quito) del largometraje de ficción “Sin Otoño, Sin Primavera” del director Iván Mora Manzano, estrenada en cines comerciales en 2012. Coordinadora de producción del largometraje de ficción “Quito 2023”, estrenada en cines comerciales en 2014 .
En el año 2014, formó parte del Consejo Nacional de Cinematografía del Ecuador como analista a cargo de la formación y capacitación cinematográfica a nivel nacional.

EMPRESAS PRODUCTORAS
Establecida en Ecuador, MÁCHICA Films se dedica al impulso de proyectos cinematográficos. Entre los que cuentan los largometrajes de ficción La Tola Box (2014), Danzante del Destino (Premio Producción CNC del Ecuador, 2012) y Flores Negras (Premio Producción CNC del Ecuador, 2013). MÁCHICA está afianzando alianzas de co-producción con otros países latinoamericanos.
Actualmente, co-produce “Sansón” (largometraje ficción en desarrollo), proyecto que participó en el Fondo de Desarrollo de Guión del Festival de Amiens 2013 (Francia) y en el Encuentro de Coproducción Produire au Sud, (Nantes, Francia, 2014).
Paralelamente, MÁCHICA ofrece servicios completos de postproducción, diseño de sonido y mezcla final en alianza con Bunker, el estudio de sonido con mayor experiencia en cine del país. También desarrolla contenidos propios para televisión y productos publicitarios.
Constituida en 2007, PULSO se ha dedicado a desarrollar proyectos cinematográficos, entre los que cuentan: “La Tola Box”, estrenada en cines comerciales en Octubre 2014 y “Danzante del destino” (largometraje documental en postproducción). Produjo los cortometrajes de ficción “Destierro de medianoche” y “Clown”.

STORYLINEBeyond the punches, boxing paints a complex portrait of life itself - its obstacles, the fight, the discipline, the commitment. La Tola Box is a film that examines the more human aspects of boxing. It explores the life of four distinct characters - one for each corner of the boxing ring: Ecuadorian boxing veterans Eugenio Espinoza and Ramiro “Clay” Bolaños, the young aspiring boxer César, and the young amateur boxer Carlos. The film weaves a tale about the triumph of the human spirit both in the ring and in life itself.

SINOPSIShis family. He trains at La Tola every day under the guidance of Coach Segundo Chango, the founder of the gym. In his spare time, Carlos is a hip-hop singer-songwriter. His music is often an expression of his needs, his insecurities, and his dreams. Like César, Carlos hopes to become a successful boxer as a way to support his family.
Meanwhile Eugenio Espinoza and Clay Bolaños, two Ecuadorian boxing legends, nostalgically reminisce with their fans about their long-gone golden days of boxing. They were both strong contenders in worldwide championships, won piles of money, and were once able to fill whole stadiums of admirers. This is a journey that César and Carlos are begining to make in an era where Ecuadorian national boxing is little more than a wistful memory.
La Tola Box sets it sights beyond the boxing matches and the triumphs of its characters. It is a thoroughly made documentary that delves into the human stories behind the players in the arena of amateur and professional boxing.
The neighborhood of “La Tola” is nestled on the top of a hill amongst the dramatic skyline of Quito’s Historic Town District. The boxing gym of La Tola is more than just an observatory overlooking to the chaotic beauty of the Ecuadorian capital’s hispanic architecture - it serves as the training grounds for some of the best boxers in the country.
César, a young 13-year-old boy, dreams of making it big as a world-reknown boxer. Although he lives with his two sisters and two young nephews, César finds his way to the La Tola gym every evening after cooking and babysitting, homework and chores. It is there, away from his responsibilities at home, that he trains with unrivaled passion and discipline in an effort to bring his dreams to life.Carlos Mina, a young 18-year-old boxing amateur, spends his days at a sports dormitory far away from

Born in Quito, Ecuador in 1980. His first feature-length documentary “La Tola Box” received a wide-spread theatrical release in Ecuador and was nominated in the category of Best Iberoamerican Documentary at the Platinum Awards in Spain. Pável is currently in the process of developing his first narrative feature “Samson” which was recently selected as a participant in the 2013 edition of the Screenplay Development Fund of the Amiens Film Festival in France and in the 2014 edition of the Produire au Sud at the 3 Continents Film Festival in Nantes, France.Pavel studied Film Production at the National Film School (IUNA) in Argentina and Documentary Filmmaking at the Popular de Madres de Plaza de Mayo University. In the year 2000 he won the “Valentín Arteaga” International Poetry Award in Spain. Pavel also received extensive musical education in piano performance.Pável imagines the audiovisual medium as a labyrinth that he takes pride in exploring. He visualizes the process of filmmaking as a portrait of what it means to be human in this day and age - a medium which transforms itself into a narrator of stories that are not always told. He maintains that film is like an electrifying bolt that jolts the audience into a moment of reflection, a moment in which long-forgotten dreams and aspirations can take new life. Film is, after all, a metaphor for the world we live in.

As I became more involved with the pugilistic world, I discovered the richness of the stories that surrounded it, stories that are as hard and difficult, as poetic and involving.
Because of its rough appearance, boxing has become a sport surrounded by prejudice. Some people judge this sport negatively, considering it violent, dangerous, and unappealing. La Tola Box gives the spectator the understanding that this sport is based on technique, respect, and honesty inside the ring.
La Tola boxing gym is located in the historic center of Quito, a place which has a magic atmosphere, with its architecture and innate beauty; filled with generous characters, full of life and dreams. This film is a recognition and a homage to the stories of these people.
Making this film has been a great learning experience, a unique and unforgettable journey.
The film portrays the human side of boxing, it deals with the difficulties and the sensitivity found behind the gloves, beyond the arena of amateur and professional boxing. “La Tola Box” portrays the small characters of boxing, who give their all to achieve their goals.
This journey began in 2008. The idea started out from a desire to explore the boxing world: its poetic, its images, and its stories. A sport in which the body learns how to hender the punches, to absorb them, and with the same and even more energy, to punch back. I always felt drawn by these elements because these are not just mere punches, they are impacts thrown with technique, thought, and creativity; hence boxing is like a combat ballet.

PRODUCERBorn in Quito in 1987. Maria Fernanda has a B.A. in Film and Video Production from Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ) and a M.Sc. in Sociology from the Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO). She began her producing track through her involvement of the promotion of Tania Hermida’s feature-length film “How Much Further” in 2006. She continued to climb her way up as a 4th Assistant Director in the feature film “Prometeo Deportado” (2010) followed by a stint as the Production Coordinator (Quito Unit) for Ivan Mora Manzano’s feature “No Autumn, No Spring” (2012) and finally the Production Coordinator for the sci-fi feature film “Quito 2023” (2014). In 2014 she worked for the Ecuadorian Film Council as an Analyst. Her duties included supervising and scheduling Film Production Workshops and other film education related programming at a national level.
During her career, María Fernanda also directed several short films.

Established in Ecuador, MÁCHICA Films has dedicated itself to develop film projects such as “La Tola Box” (a feature documentary released theatrically in Ecuador in October 2014) and “Danzante del Destino” (a feature documentary currently in post-production). MÁCHICA seeks to make coproduction agreements with Latinamerican countries. Currently, MÁCHICA is involved in the production of “Sansón” (Samson) - a feature-length narrative film that participated in the Amiens Screenplay Development Lab in 2013 (France) and in the Co-Production Initiative Produire Au Sud in 2014 (Nantes, France, 2014).
At the same time, MÁCHICA offers postproduction, sound design and final mix services together with BUNKER, the most experienced und studio in Ecuador. It also produces Advertising and content for Television.
