PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: A look at the history of the Bethel Creek House of Refuge

The Bethel Creek House of Refuge was built February 1876 and was the first one in Florida. An historical marker was erected by the Colonial Dames XVII Century and can be seen at Jaycee Park where the building once stood. Nineteen keepers and their families have been identified from 1876 until 1929. The salary was low – rarely over $600 per year. Their stories were told through log books and reports which were researched at the National Archives. The first female child born in Indian River County may have been in 1878. She was the daughter of the first keeper, John Houston. She later married a member of a Sebastian family and became Laura Houston Braddock. Many of their descendants live in Florida today. The keeper’s job could be exciting and rewarding. Any ship caught in a gale, hurricane or ran aground within 20 miles of a House of Refuge was recorded. It was their job to record daily shipwrecks and maintain custody over the wrecked property until ownership could be determined.

They were responsible for offering food, comfort and shelter to passengers and crew of shipwrecked vessels. They provided accommodations for up to 25 people. The survivors could stay up to 10 days while waiting for another ship to pick them up. The keeper maintained the house and according to documentation they often did menial tasks such as: 1. Repaired and painted chairs

2. Found and reported cracks in the stove 3. Fixed the screen doors 4. Repaired the leaking water tank 5. Cleaned the attic 6. Took inventory 7. Kept log of a specific ship The word Bethel has a textbook definition: “A chapel for seaman or seafarers.” In Part 2 next week, I’ll have more about the loss of the house of refuge.

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for Nyquist to win the Preakness:

• What I know about the world of fashion could fit in one of Donald Trump’s hands. That said, I know there’s always a buzz when Lilly Pulitzer introduces a new line of clothing. Which makes what’s taking place the next two weeks at Costa d’Este pretty cool. The company will be giving Pulitzer-affiliated stores a preview of its new resort wear. “It is not open to the public,” said Julie Knight, owner of The Lazy Daisy. “It is a business-working event.” Knight says about 75 rooms at Costa d’Este – owned by singer Gloria Estefan and her husband, Emilio – have been booked over the two-week period. Store representatives from around the country will come here for two days at a time. It was Knight who suggested Vero Beach as the site for the

annual preview, and Amanda Osman, the director of sales at Costa d’Este, who did the recruiting. Knight called Osman a “rock star” for putting it all together. The Lazy Daisy, located just west of Ocean Drive, is within walking distance of Costa d’Este. The store carries only Lilly Pulitzer clothing. The company’s namesake died in 2013, but the company remains Apple-like in its ability to create buzz over a new product. “The prints and everything that they’re going to be showing us won’t be available to the general public until it launches in November. Lots of changes could be made in the meantime,” Knight said. “But that’s kind of the fun of Lilly. The Lilly customer waits for the next line to come out. They want to see what it looks like, they want to see the new prints. It’s a lot of

the element of surprise, and excitement.”• The site that was originally a Perkins restaurant is being transformed into DaVita Dialysis Center. It’s great news for the plaza on northbound U.S. 1 just south of 4th Street. It had been struggling since the Department of Motor Vehicles closed its office there a few years ago. This will be the third DaVita Dialysis Center in Indian River County. It’s expected to open by the end of the summer. “They’re a phenomenal tenant,” said Mike Stiles, the property manager. According to Stiles, the dialysis center is considering being open 24 hours a day. With the 5,300-square-foot building currently undergoing a makeover, Stiles says doctor offices and a real estate company have inquired about openings in the plaza.• Sebastian is known for its “welcome” sign to the city – you know, “Friendly People and Six Old Grouches.” Richard Granata showed me a photo of the sign he took

while traveling through New Mexico: “Welcome to Aztec. 5,506 Friendly People & 6 Old Soreheads.”• The name of the aforementioned plaza on U.S. 1 is officially Royal Gardens, although you won’t find it on any signs. Mike Stiles, the property manager, says Frank Sosta, the owner of Royal Cut Barber Shop, is lobbying to keep the name Royal Gardens. (“Frank is a fixture,” Stiles said. “He’s like the mayor of the plaza.”) However, Stiles hinted that a name change to DaVita Plaza might be forthcoming.• Some funny trivia regarding a longtime local business: Father & Sons Carpet is run by four brothers, and all of them have three-letter names – Tim, Ron, Tom and Don.• Attention, Darrell Rivers (candidate for sheriff) and Richard Gillmor (candidate for County Commission): There’s a reason other candidates haven’t joined you in putting up campaign signs – they’re showing respect for the various local ordinances. Unlike both of you.

Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what is a regular feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.

Diana Walker’s high school classmates voted her the “Most Likely to Succeed.” You might say the 1970 graduates of Martin County High School showed their collective wisdom by doing so. Throughout her career, Diana has been driven to succeed. After graduating from the University of Louisville, where she played on the tennis and basketball teams, Diana was recruited by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (better known as the FDIC) for a job in West Virginia. She was the first woman in the region to become a senior examiner. She worked long hours because she knew that’s what it would take to climb the career ladder at the FDIC.

Keep in mind, we’re talking the 1970s. Like many women back then, she faced a “very hostile” work environment. “Somebody told me there that I was taking a good man’s job,” she said. According to Diana, it was not said in a joking manner – which prompted me to shake my head out of embarrassment for things that were said during those unenlightened times.

“It makes you stronger,” she said. “I learned nobody was going to help me – but me.” Diana was hired by Sun Bank in 1984 and Indian River National Bank in ’94. She joined CenterState Bank in 2010. She is currently vice president and branch manager. Diana is on the board of directors for next month’s Vero Beach Air Show. She loves the water, too – she and her husband, Ken, own a 37-foot catamaran. On her “bucket list”: Live on a sailboat for at least two months.

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

The county’s Code Enforcement division handled roughly 30 complaints per week during the last fiscal year. The number of code-violation complaints during the 2014-15 fiscal year was 1,603. The previous year, the total was 1,480. Two years ago, the number of complaints received totaled 1,811 – or an average of nearly 35 per week.
