Celebrating 45 Years 2015
PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: A look at the life of Dr. Frederick A. Grossman
Dr. Frederick A. Grossman (1871-1947) was an early Vero Beach physician, practicing 1915-1933. He appears in the Fort Pierce 1916 directory. It lists his office and residence location above the Maher’s Dry Good Store on Osceola Boulevard in Vero. Born in Hungary and raised in Chicago, he moved to Melbourne about 1913 and two years later to Vero. In 1921, Dr. Grossman and his wife Gertrude built a large two-story, 12-room home and it is still standing at 1507 20th Street, across from the courthouse. Since they had no children and both were over 50, it is most likely he built it to be the first hospital. He was appointed as the city health officer as well as registrar of vital statistics. In September 1926, Dr. Grossman led the efforts to provide assistance to the people of Miami in one of the worst hurricanes in Florida history. The Grossmans owned a boat called the “Gertrude.” It
was often used to take people to Paradise Island – now called Prange Island just south of the Alma Lee Loy Bridge. Frederick A. Prange and his wife, Nettie May Gifford, were good friends of Dr. Grossman and often celebrated events together. Fred and Gertrude returned to Chicago about 1933 when they lost their house to taxes. A few months later, the Cox Funeral Home moved in.
In 1944, Cox sold the business and it became the Floyd Funeral Home until 1957. In 1958, Dale Berggren and his mother, Frances, bought the home and it became Berggren’s Toy and Hobby Shop until about 1988. Since then, many businesses have come and gone. On a personal note, I think this home would make a great local history museum. It has location and lots of rooms! Pam Cooper is supervisor of the Archive Center & Genealogy Department at the Indian River County main library.

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for Donald Trump’s poll numbers to start dropping:
• For these girls, ages 3 and 6, it was a lesson in empowerment. Their mothers wanted them to know they can make a difference in the world. Last week, Alice Knowles and Riley Stadler set up a lemonade stand outside the Publix at U.S. 1 and 12th Street. They raised more than $900 for the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, which is dedicated to the late Alexandra “Alex” Scott’s dream of eradicating childhood cancer. (Alex died in 2004 at the age of 8. Horse racing fans may remember 2005 Kentucky Derby winner Afleet Alex and the tie-in with Alex Lemonade Stands.) “I was amazed at the generosity of people,” said Megan Stadler, mother of 6-year-old Riley, a first-grader at Beachland Elemetary. Jerrica Knowles, mother of 3-year-old Alice, hopes the
girls continue down the road of wanting to help others. “I just want them to be good kids,” she said. “That’s my goal as a parent: For her to be the best person she can be.” How did the idea for an Alex’s Lemonade Stand come about? Jerrica was reading a story on her iPad about a young boy with lymphoma. Alice was very curious. “What are you reading? Who is that boy? Why doesn’t he have hair?” Jerrica said of Alice’s questions. Alice wanted to help the boy. So, Jerrica started to think of ways to raise money for him. The mothers, Jerrica and Megan, have been good friends since high school. They did some brainstorming and agreed that operating an Alex’s Lemonade Stand was the way to go.

Thanks to donations from Natalie’s Orchid Island Juice Company, Bitsy’s Brainfood and Glenda Phillips (who made cookies decorated like slices of lemons), it became a big deal. If you want to see a photo of Riley and Alice, go to LemmonLines.com.• Back in 2011, while working at the Press Journal, I wrote a column to praise Jim Mattingly, a teacher at St. Helen Catholic School, for making sure his students were taught state capitals and the names of all presidents. (Sadly, those basics are no longer universally taught in public schools.) As you can see by the ad at the bottom of page 2, Jim is not in good health. Please consider donating to the “Go Fund Me” account set up by his friends.• Do you have any shoes you’re going to discard? Vero Beach Elementary School’s PTA would like to hear from you. In what is an unusual fundraiser, the PTA is trying
to collect 2,250 pairs of shoes before the end of October. Call James Batory at 772-564-4611 for instructions on how to contribute.• The best example of customer service I’ve seen in recent months was by Glenna Rufca at the main library. I was there to pick up a book on CD for my wife, and needed some hand-holding on where to find it. Glenna got up from her desk and found it for me.• In case you haven’t heard, the Dockside Grille has closed. (Thanks to Barry Tatem for the tip!) There’s a “for sale” sign out front. Jerry Vanausdall, who is with Corporate Investment International of Brevard Inc., says he’s already gotten a few bites.• Why do I like going into the downtown post office? Because one of the clerks, Dave Vivona, always asks me if Hurricane Smith’s “Oh, Babe, What Would You Say?” is on my list of Top 500 favorite songs (see page 7). Of all the songs out there, he picked that one!

Meet me at Table 51
Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.
Sometimes, all it takes is one person to make a difference in your life. That’s why Julie Arata, a server at C.J. Cannon’s, calls Lois Cappelen her “angel.” Their chance meeting at the local Goodwill store – where Julie was working as a wares processor – proved to be the break she needed for a better life in Vero Beach. Lois, who was shopping at Goodwill with her great-granddaughter, struck up a conversation with Julie. At some point, Julie expressed interest in finding a more satisfying job. Lois asked if she had any experience as a server. Julie had worked as a server in Long Island (where she spent the first 28 years of her life) and Las Vegas (where she
lived for 18 years). Lois, usually the first person you see when you arrive at C.J. Cannon’s, suggested Julie come to the restaurant and talk with her. Julie did, and she was offered a job. “I’m extremely grateful that they gave me a chance to show what I can do,” Julie said. She just passed the one-year mark – her first day was Sept. 17, 2014 – and she couldn’t be happier.
In 2013, Julie moved from Las Vegas to Florida so she could be near her mother in Orlando. However, she was unable to find a job in Orlando, so she followed a friend’s suggestion and tried Vero Beach. “I’ve met so many nice people here,” she said. “Vero Beach is a hidden treasure.” Julie says she has another “angel” in Pat Cannon, owner of the restaurant. “She treats us like family,” Julie said.

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.
Gifford, which is named after Henry Gifford (one of the early settlers of Vero Beach), had a population of 9,590 in the 2010 Census.
In 1960, Gifford’s population was only 3,509. A decade later, it was 5,772. In 2000, the population had jumped to 7,599.
