In commemoration of the 300-year anniversary of the sinking of the 11 ships of the Spanish treasure fleet, the Indian River County libraries in collaboration with the 1715 Fleet Society have provided display cases, historical panels, author book signings, children’s programs, bus tours and speakers. The ships sank in the early morning of July 31 in an area of the Atlantic Ocean from St Lucie to Brevard counties. Learn more about the location of the shipwrecks, their cargo, and life after the storm. See artifacts and displays on the first and second floors of the Main Library. Here is a list of the historical panels: 1) Cargo of the 1715 Spanish fleet2) Coins and descriptions3) Spanish galleon cross-section and detailed descriptions 4) How the Spanish ships were named5) Life of Jonathan Dickinson6) Where did the treasure come from?
7) What was the Real 8 Corporation? 8) RioMar wreck aka Hampton Court 9) Timeline and list of the 1715 wrecks 10) Ais Indians 11) Underwater diving in the 16th -18th centuries 12) Map of the 1715 shipwreck sites13) What animals did the fleet survivors encounter? The Main library is showing for the first time on Friday at 11 a.m. what could be the “last interview”
of the Real 8 Corporation original members. It was videotaped at the library in 1997. Dr. Kip Kelso was the moderator. Copies will be made available for patrons to borrow from the library next month. Don’t forget the treasure hunt! Go online to learn about the prizes and more at: www.irclibrary.org/genealogy/1715.htm. All events sponsored by the Friends of the IRC Main Library.

Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the next rumble of thunder:
• To be honest, I’ve never liked the name “Treasure Coast.” Upon hearing it the first time (after having moved here from the Midwest), I thought it sounded like a cheap imitation of “Gold Coast.” Plus, it just sounds awkward. I didn’t realize it was related to what we are commemorating this week – the Spanish Treasure Fleet that was lost in a 1715 hurricane. At least the name makes sense now. Not that “Spanish Treasures Coast” and “Sunken Treasures Coast” roll off the tongue, but they might make for a better first impression. (Of course, the tweaked names would never fly because the official names of the coasts in Florida are limited to two words.) Kudos to the 1715 Fleet Society and the library for collaborating to commemorate this maritime disaster. The
displays in the library give you a real sense of history. The 1715 Fleet Society has members all across the country, and many of them will be in Indian River County this week to retrace history. Check out the library this week, won’t you? You might learn a thing or two about local history.• Our local libraries are more popular than I thought. Mary Snyder, the director of the library system, had Josh Perez (her “I.T. guru”) check on the number of people who have used their library card in the past year, and below are the numbers. Main Library: 17,036. North County Library: 9,676. Brackett Library: 2,092. Gifford Library: 112. Pretty impressive numbers, no?• The hurricane in 1715 struck on July 31. According to the

website hurricanecity.com, since 1871 (which is as far as its records go back), we’ve had only two hurricanes in July. We’ve been hit by 30 hurricanes during the past 144 years. By the way, the website says we’re 3 years overdue for a hurricane. Yikes.• To give you an idea how my mind works, when I first heard the name 1715 Fleet Society I thought of the 1910 Fruitgum Company – you know, the band from the 1960s. So, I went to YouTube and listened to the song “Yummy Yummy Yummy.”• If you watched “Last Comic Standing” last week, you probably saw a clip of Julie Scoggins telling a joke. She’s going to be the featured comic Aug. 7-8 at Riverside Theatre’s Comedy Zone. Since the debut of the Comedy Zone in May 2007, attendance for the shows is north of 70,000, according to Oscar Sales, Riverside Theatre’s marketing director.
• As you can see at the bottom of page 4, Golden Sands Community Management is a new advertiser. I just assumed the business name had something to do with the beach – perhaps even the beach park on A1A. That’s not the case. The “Golden” part is for Golden Retrievers. Owner Bob Begley has three Golden Retrievers (that’s 5-year-old Chase in the ad; Casey and Dugan are the others) and he brings them to work on a rotating basis. I’ve known Bob’s wife, Janet Begley, for several years. She’s a freelance writer and she does a great job with news stories in the Press Journal. What I never knew about Janet and Bob: Their son, Rob, is a professional wrestler on the WWE circuit. He goes by the name Vik Dalisous. Very cool!• I kid you not: Someone on eBay is trying to sell a 1977 dinner menu from The Patio restaurant for $45. It’s one of 2,500-plus menus from restaurants around the country that the person is trying to sell on eBay.

Indian River County has to be one of the most wonderful treasures in Florida. I should know, I've lived in many places in the state. It is truly a gem! One of my missions is to find the great places here in the county. Below are three awesome places in Vero Beach:• Pocahontas Park: If you have children, it is likely you have been to this park. Many fun events and concerts are held at this park. The play area, consisting of slides, swings, and playground equipment is not only for the young. It has an area where older children can climb. Children of all ages can play on the newly renovated tennis courts. And for those young at heart, there are the shuffle board courts. But that isn't all. • The Community Center: Like to dance, get fit, or how about playing some bridge? There are many events held at
the Community Center, which is located next toPocahontas Park. It is a great place to strike up new friendships and have an enjoyable time! The center also can be rented for events. It holds over 200 people. • The Citrus Museum: Also next to Pocahontas Park, the museum is in the handsome 1930s Heritage Center. This building survived many storms over the years, plus a fire. In 1941 it was converted into a naval base and held USO dances. Shadows of those dances can be still felt
when you’re inside. Next to the dance hall, there is the Citrus Museum. If you ever wanted to know all about the industry and how it developed, come to this historical museum. Special events can be held here too.
If something were wrong, wouldn’t you rather correct
it before it was too late?

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.
377. “You’ve Got a Friend”(1971) Carole KingMemory: The version by James Taylor could have been in this slot, but I gave the tiebreaker to the songwriter.376. “Danny’s Song”(1971) Loggins and MessinaMemory: “Even though we ain’t got money, I’m so in love with you, honey.” Love the lyrics and the story behind the song.375. “Jet Airliner” (1977) Steve Miller BandMemory: I swear, my college roommate played this song a billion times in our dorm room. Good thing I liked it.
In Indian River County, there are more than 20,000 students enrolled in K-12. The breakdown of the county’s K-12 students: There are about 1,000 in kindergarten; 12,200 in grades 1-8; and 7,200 in grades 9-12. Meanwhile, there are about 2,300 in nursery school and preschool.
