PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: The stories behind Wabasso’s name (Part 1)
Wabasso is a mysterious town name to many people of Indian River County. In 1889, it was thought to be named Lowanna by Mr. and Mrs. George King, early settlers of Wabasso, for their daughter, Lowanna. However, it is not verified they had a daughter named Lowanna. This name is not found on the early maps. There is no source for this statement and should not be accepted. In the 1890s, the town may have been given the name Two Dollar Bluff. This was according to a speech in 1962 by a local pioneer, Isaac Reams. It was actually a landmark for an Indian mound along the river. On March 31, 1897, Frank Forster applied for a post office application and for the first time, the name Wabasso was used. Below are two of five possible reasons for the name. You be the judge. 1. The meaning of Wabasso is an old Indian legend about the creation of the earth. Wabasso was one of four sons of
Gitche Manito, the mighty, the creator of the nations, who came to earth and took a wife. When Wabasso saw the light of day, he fled to the north where he was changed into a white rabbit and was considered The Spirit of the North. Conceivably, someone from the north could have named it Wabasso after the spirit. 2. Henry W. Longfellow used Wabasso in his poem The Song of Hiawatha – The Four Winds:
Honor be to Mudjekeewis!Cried the warriors, cried the old men,When he came in triumph homewardWith the sacred Belt of Wampum,From the regions of the North-Wind,From the kingdom of Wabasso,From the land of the White Rabbit.
Look for other three possible reasons next week in Part 2.

• Commercial air service is returning to the Vero Beach Regional Airport. (Woo hoo!) Elite Airways will be offering direct flights to and from Newark Liberty International Airport beginning Dec. 10. With flights on Thursday and Sunday, it’s perfect for a weekend getaway to the Big Apple. “We think it’s going to be a real hit,” Airport Director Eric Menger said at last week’s press conference to introduce Elite. The implications, all positive, are huge. Local residents won’t have to drive to Orlando or some other airport to catch a flight to the New York City area. Did I mention there’s free parking here? The “convenience factor” is a 10. Tourists wanting to visit Vero Beach will have a direct flight (2 hours, 50 minutes). Rental-car agencies near the
airport will be getting the business instead of their counterparts in Orlando or West Palm Beach. Same goes for C.J. Cannon’s restaurant. “Once this gets out in the press up north, it’ll be incredible,” said John Pearsall, president of Elite Airways. Menger estimates there will be $1.8 million of economic impact locally during the first year. My impression of Elite is that it’s a small airline interested in doing things the right way. In other words, it’s not going to bail after a few months. Kudos to Eric Menger for making this happen. • With the Press Journal expected to have yet another owner in six months, I’m feeling pretty good about my decision to leave the newspaper industry. It’s going to be very

interesting to see how the PJ fares under Gannett ownership. The acquisition is a smart move by Gannett. It’ll own daily newspapers in Brevard, Indian River, St. Lucie and Martin counties. That being said, the PJ’s change in ownership can only help sister publications Vero Beach 32963 and Vero News.• A reader sent an email to complain about the new traffic signal being installed at Indian River Boulevard and 53rd Street. He said it was a waste of taxpayer dollars – and I told him I agreed. Turns out there’s no cost to taxpayers. Chris Mora, the county’s director of Public Works, says Grand Harbor’s developer is footing the bill for the new signal.• The corn maze at Countryside Citrus has been canceled this year. Blame it on Tropical Storm Erika – all of the rain caused a delay in the planting of the corn. (Some good news: Countryside Citrus is doubling the size of its strawberry patch. The strawberries should be ready in December.)
• Do you know a World War II veteran who would enjoy going to see the WW II Memorial in the nation’s capital? Thanks to donations from its customers, C.J. Cannon’s restaurant has raised enough money for four tickets with the Space Coast Honor Flight. Please contact Pat Cannon or Lois Cappelen at the restaurant if you or someone you know would be interested in going on this free flight.• So my wife and I are at a locally owned restaurant known for breakfast (not C.J. Cannon’s, by the way), and she orders basted eggs. The server throws us for a loop by saying she has never heard of basted eggs. After my wife explained what they are, the server takes the order … but, in the end, poached eggs are what appeared on her plate. Very strange!• Finally, I want to thank all of those who acknowledged our first birthday. The phone calls, emails, posts on Facebook and, of course, in-person comments were greatly appreciated. On to Year 2!

Overlooked cinematic gems: Halloween edition
As owner of a used DVD shop, I occasionally find fairly obscure movies that turn out to be quite good. Here are three of them:
• Let The Right One In (2008, R, directed by Tomas Alfredson). Known as “Låt den rätte komma in” in its native Sweden, this is one of the best vampire movies to come along in years. Oskar is a shy, bullied young boy with no friends. That is, until he meets Eli, his mysterious new neighbor. Eli is a vampire, and to make a long story short: you don’t want to pick on a vampire’s new BFF. A coming-of-age movie as much as it is a horror film, it succeeds on both levels, and also throws in a twist ending.• May (2002, R, directed by Lucky McKee). May (Angela Bettis) grew up a strange and lonely child, whose best friend was a strange and creepy doll given to her by her mother (who was also strange and creepy). As an adult, her odd
appearance and bizarre demeanor made social interaction difficult at best. However, it was when her doll was accidentally broken that May really came unglued. To replace the doll, May decides to make a new one – out of human body parts!• From Beyond (1986, R, directed by Stuart Gordon). Scientists develop a machine called The Resonator, which effectively opens a breach between our reality and realities from beyond.
This allows humans to view what’s going on in alternate realities. Unfortunately the beings from those realities can also see us, and they aren’t always going to be friendly. OK, spoiler alert: they’re downright nasty! Loosely based on an H.P. Lovecraft story, the movie stars Jeffery Combs (Re-animator series).
