PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Blue Cypress Lake has colorful history

Research of Blue Cypress Lake took me to South American gold mines, the development of the bicycle playing cards and Macy’s of New York. In 1895, Anthony O. Russell of the United States Playing Card Company purchased 112,000 acres that included the lake he called Wilmington and the business he called Cincinnatus Farm. Who was Wilmington? Mr. Russell was from Cincinnati. James “Willis” Wilmington lived with the Russell family. They started a printing business together that evolved into the playing card company, which is still in business today. Both James and Anthony went off to the Civil War together. Afterward, Anthony continued the card business and Wilmington went to California to be a San Francisco newspaper reporter. He was assigned the gold mines of “New Granada,” which today are areas in northwest South America. Upon his return, he went to Nevada to mine for gold and died of a fever he contracted

in New Granada when he was 36 years old. His widow later married in Memphis where their daughter Florence married Elias Leubrie. They moved to New York. Florence became a European buyer of woman’s clothing for Stern Brothers, which became Macy’s in 2001. Why all this research? It was only to verify the connection of Lake Wilmington to J.W. Wilm-

ington. It was hoped family could be contacted and later confirm the reason for the name. Russell died in 1900 and the property went to his son “Willis” Russell. Later it was sold to the Fell family and the rest of the story is Fellsmere history. An interesting note: The Leubrie family married into the Maas family. Anyone remember Maas Brothers of Tampa? Another connection? Researching history is fun and a lot can be learned. We are all connected.Pam Cooper is supervisor of the Archive Center & Genealogy Department at the Indian River County main library.

• For the first time since we moved here in November 2006, my wife and I had “The Talk.” We had to decide whether to put up shutters for a potential hurricane. At the time, several models had Erika plowing through Indian River County. The big question: Was this tropical storm going to morph into a hurricane? We did not agree on what to do. My wife was strongly in favor of putting up shutters. (Because I’m not a handyman, we were going to have to pay someone to do it. The property-maintenance company she contacted needed 72 hours’ notice.) I was strongly against putting up shutters. (Our insurance policy has a $6,000 deductible for hurricane damage … what a joke! … and it requires shutters be in place, so I saw

the situation as this: Would we receive $6,000 damage if Erika turned into a Category1 hurricane? We’d have to pay someone to put the shutters up, and then pay someone to take them down.) Ultimately, I prevailed. So, by the time you read this, you’ll know if the right decision was made. (I wrote this column on Friday morning, about 72 hours before Erika was supposed to arrive in the area.) Of course, if Erika strengthened significantly and hit our area, I’ll look like a real doofus. Disclaimer: If Erika intensifies and it’s looking really, really bad, I’ll do my best handyman impression and try to put up the shutters! Still, I’m glad my wife and I had “The Talk.” It was a good

exercise and will help us the next time we’re in the path of a destructive storm.• A few weeks ago, I said I had a bone to pick with Piper. Someone showed me a Piper ad in an aviation magazine, and nowhere did it say Vero Beach or even Florida. You’d think with all of the tax incentives Piper has been given that it would at least mention Florida in the ad. Richard Granata came to Piper’s defense. He gave me a Piper Cub lapel pin that says “Vero Beach” at the bottom.• Thanks to Ben B. Stockton, Jr., a Vista Royale snowbird who spends the summer months in Evansville, Ind., for mailing me an article from Kentucky Magazine about people who always dine at the same table when they’re at a particular restaurant. Ben says he thought of me because of my history with Table 51 at Bob Evans. Hey, I could relate to everything in that article!• Paul Hargraves made me laugh with his comment about

the Top 500 song countdown on page 7. “At this rate I may be dead by the time you get down to single digits, so indulge me,” he wrote in an email. “Where in your ranking is probably the greatest love song of the era: ‘If ’ by David Gates/Bread?” Well, Paul, I’m thinking you’re going to be disappointed. I mean, if we put the “Greatest Love Song of the 1970s” up for a vote, I doubt “If” would even make the Top 10. (For me, it probably would be a coin-flip between two wedding-song staples of the era, “We’ve Only Just Begun” and “Colour My World.”)• My favorite message on a church sign in recent months: “There are some questions that can’t be Googled.” Thanks for the smile, Sebastian United Methodist Church.• Reality check: 40 years ago, I was beginning my senior year of high school. Sigh. Where did the time go? Where did my hair go?

Meet me at Table 51

Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.

Gary Parker has brought a sense of professionalism to the weekend comedy shows at Riverside Theatre. Before he became emcee of The Comedy Zone, the various people who introduced the featured comic and headliner often failed to engage the audience. Gary commands your attention from the moment you hear his voice. If he sounds like a former radio guy, that’s because he is. He was once an on-air personality in California. He and his wife, Barbara (a volunteer at the Used Book Depot), eventually moved to Nebraska and spent three

decades there. They owned Planner Pads – a company that sells time-management tools such as daily organizers. While in Omaha, Gary dabbled in stand-up comedy at open-mic nights. His routine impressed a representative of an advertising agency who was in the audience for one of the shows. Gary became the TV spokesperson for a Toyota dealer in Omaha. “That was when I had hair and a suit,” he said.

He stopped going to open-mic nights in 1984 because he needed to focus on running Planner Pads. In 2001, Gary and Barbara moved to Indian River County. Last year, he finally got up enough nerve to approach The Comedy Zone about becoming the emcee. “It had been 30 years since I stood in front of a group,” he said. Apparently, it’s just like riding a bicycle.
