_____/10 points

Reading

Read the text and decide whether the statements (1-5) are True or False and for questions 6-10 choose the answer (A, B, or C) which you think fits best according to the text.

A database is a collection of related data, and the software used in databases to store, organize and retrieve the data is called the database management system, or DBMS. However, we often use the word database to cover both meanings. A database can manage any type of data, including text, numbers, images, sound, video and hyperlinks. Information is entered into the database via fields. Each field holds a separate piece of information, and the fields are grouped together in records. Therefore, a record about an employee might consist of several fields which give their name, address, phone number, date of birth, salary and length of employment with the company.

Records are grouped together into files which hold large amounts of information. Files can easily be updated - you can always change fields, add new records or delete old ones. An electronic database is much faster to consult and update than a card index system and occupies a lot less space. With the right software, you can keep track of stock, sales, market trends, orders and other information that can help your company stay successful. A database program lets you create an index - a list of records ordered according to the content of certain fields. This helps you to search the database and sort records into numerical or alphabetical order very quickly.

1. DBMS is the software used in databases to store, organize and retrieve the data. T F2. Texts, numbers, images, sound and hyperlinks cannot be managed with help of database. T F3. An information field about an employee contains several records. T F4. Files hold large amount of information, they are composed of records. T F5. Index facilitates the search through a database. T F6. What is the database management system according to the text?

a) it is a collection of related datab) it is a type of softwarec) it is a machine, used for data storage

7. What types of data can a database manage?a) some text files, numbers, images, sound, video and hyperlinksb) any kind of data, including text files, numbers, images, sound, video and links to websitesc) any sort of data except images, sound, video and hyperlinks

8. How can information be entered into a database?a) it can be entered using special fields, that are further grouped into recordsb) it can be entered via files, containing personal details such as name, address, date of birth etc.c) it can be entered with help of a card index system

9. What are the advantages of an electronic database?a) it can operate without any softwareb) it can give access to the personal details of any employeec) it doesn’t occupy a lot of space and can be easily updated

10. What is a database index created for?a) it provides fast searchb) it helps you to store data quicklyc) it enables fast search and sorting data according certain parameters

Every day, people send each other billions of e-mail messages. If you're online a lot, you yourself may send a dozen or more e-mails each day without even thinking about it. Obviously, e-mail has become an extremely popular communication tool.

According to Darwin Magazine, the first e-mail message was sent in 1971 by an engineer named Ray Tomlinson. Prior to this, you could only send messages to users on a single machine.

Time magazine has named Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, as their Person of the Year 2010. Zuckerberg, 26, is the second-youngest winner of the accolade. He won the award for connecting 12 percent of the planet on his social networking site. This is an impressive statistic considering the site has yet to make any impression in China. Mr Zuckerberg said on Wednesday, naturally on his Facebook page: "Being named as Time Person of the Year is a real honor and recognition of how our little team is building something that hundreds of millions of people want to use to make the world more open and connected. I'm happy to be a part of that." The young entrepreneur owns a quarter of the shares of Facebook and is a multi-billionaire.

It was uncertain for a while who would win Time’s annual honour. Readers voting in the online poll chose the Wikileaks founder Julian Assange as the winner. However, Time panelists chose Mark Zuckerberg. Time’s editor Richard Stengel explained they chose Zuckerberg because he was a more positive figure than Assange and because he changed “how we all live our lives in ways that are innovative and even optimistic”. He wrote on Time’s website: "There is an erosion of trust in authority, a decentralizing of power and at the same time, perhaps, a greater faith in one another.” Mr another…” he said. Mr Stengel continued: “Zuckerberg sees the world as filled with potential friends.” Perhaps only the Facebook creator himself knows how much more he can do.
