    Vasakasajja Nayika -This theme depicts a Nayika longing for a union with her 

    lover, waiting impatiently for his return from a battle or a long journey. She

    prepares for the arrival of her beloved, by decorating herself and her

    surroundings tastefully. She is dolled up in the choicest of ornaments and

    clothes. She seeks to attract her weary lover to the bedroom whose air is

    permeated with titillating perfumery and setting adorned with colourful flowers

    & garlands, all chosen to reflect the mood. She is the nayika of excitement

    and passion,of longing and hope.

    Svadhinabhartruka Nayika This theme relates to a Nayika who has

    subjugated her beloved with her love and charm. er radiant beauty captivates

    him. er lover is ever at her side and she is the object of every other nayika!s

     jealousy. e is depicted as a man enamoured by her beauty, as he applies

    aromatic paste on her feet and vermillion on her forehead. This nayika is filled

    with the conviction of one who holds unconditional power over her "ord.

    Abhisarika Nayika  This Nayika is portrayed as a ravishing damsel, who is

    so deeply in love with her beloved that she throws away her guarded feelings

    of modesty and lurks out of her house to meet her lover # who is waiting for

    her in the jungle. So much is her love for him that she braves the vagaries of

    nature, snakes and animals, and hurriedly runs into her lover!s arms. She is

    the dare#all woman set to gain access to her "ord # no secrecy, no beating

    around the bush # the $end! justifies the $means%.

    Kalahantarita Nayika This Nayika is a lover separated from her beloved, dueto a silly uarrel that occurs out of her meaningless jealousy. 's the hero tries

    to woo her, she refuses to accept his explanations and turns him away.

    owever, after the man leaves her bed chamber in despair, she begins to

    repent. er heart is thus pained by the separation caused by her folly. She is

    the uarrelsome maiden unable to come to terms with the uestionable

    behaviour patterns of her "ord, (et is filled with remorse of her hastiness.

    Virahotkanthita Nayika This is the lovelorn nayika distressed due toseparation from her beloved. This beautiful maiden, decked up like starsadorning the luminous moon, is pining for the return of her lover and standingin anticipation in the balcony or in her bed chamber ) but is disappointed asher beloved does not turn up due to his preoccupation. She suffers theexcruciating the pangs of unbearable separation. She is the nayika whois exhausted, discontented, trembling with grief and tearful. 

    Proshithabharthruka Nayika This is a nayika whose husband has gone

    abroad. She is emaciated, neglectful of her appearance and counts the days

    for her return # a dejected maiden unable to wait any longer for her "ord .er

    maids try to console her, but she refuses to accept their pleas. She weeps

    uncontrollably and lapses into deep mourning. She is the nayika who is

    suffering and missing her beloved who is away on a long journey

    Khandita Nayika – This setting depicts an inuiring, possessive heroine whois enraged and offended by her debauched lover who comes to her, bearingmarks of another woman.This Nayika is enraged and burning in anger, as herlover, who has promised to have a union with her, does not turn up. Thebeautiful Nayika waits all night only to discover that he has spent the nightwith another woman. She is deeply offended and reprimands her lover,

    accusing him of infidelity. She is the nayika who is restless, acerbic, sorrowfuland insecure.

    Vipralabdha Nayika This nayika shares the similarity with the *handita

    Nayika in that her beloved also cheats on her. She is in deep agony while

    waiting for him in her chamber the whole night. +n despair she finally removes

    her clothes, throws away her ornaments and rubs off her make#up. Though

    outsmarted, yet pines for her "ord. She is disappointed and disillusioned. She

    is gentle and tearful, given to sighing and swooning. She is the nayika who is

    dissapointed that her lover has not turned up at the tryst as he promised

    The Ashta Nayikas:

    •   Vasakasajja - The maiden ‘dolled up’ awaiting impatiently and

    eagerly for her beloved. She is the nayika of e!itement andyoung passion" of longing and hope.

    •   Viraholkhandita - The lovelorn #irahothkantita - suffering

    e!ru!iatingly the pangs of unbearable separation. She is the

    nayika who is ehausted" dis!ontented" trembling with grief andtearful.

    •   Svaadeenapathika - A woman whose beloved it !ompletelyenamored by her. $er lover is ever at her side and she is the

    ob%e!t of every other nayika’s %ealousy. This nayika speaks with

    all the freedom and assuran!e of one who holds un!onditional power over her &ord.

    •   Kalahandtharita - the 'uarrelsome maiden unable to !ome to

    terms with the 'uestionable behaviour patterns of her &ord. She isthe nayika who rebukes and sends her lover away in a fit of rage

    and then is filled with remorse.

    •   Khanditha - an in'uiring" possessive heroine who is enraged andoffended by her debau!hed lover who !omes to her" bearing

    marks of another woman. She is the nayika who is restless"a!erbi!" sorrowful and inse!ure.

    •   Vipralabdha - though outsmarted" yet pines for her &ord. She is

    disappointed and disillusioned. She is gentle and tearful" given to
