The 11th of the Similan Islands, Tachai Island is a new gem of the Andaman we shall explore today. Its beauty is up there with the best, so join us today as we take a tour around this new fascinating island.

As we approached the island, the blond tourist sitting next to us exclaimed in admiration at the beauty that spread before him. We, too, were awe-stricken at the white, powdery sand and the clear sparkling water that surrounded the isle.

On the beach, there are many corners ideal for picture-taking or just relaxing. Many visitors spread their towels and settled down for sun-bathing, some took a stroll on the soft sands while others took a swim in the ocean.

There are several great viewpoints on the island where you could see The Surin Islands out in the distance. Today, we were lucky to come face-to-face with a small, harmless black-tip shark who swam by to check us out.

One other activity we can’t miss is trekking around the island to look at hairy-legged mountain crabs that hide in the damp bushes. By nature, these crabs only come out at night; but here on Tachai Island, they crawl
out in broad day light to show-off their big claws all the way down to the beach.

Venturing up the mountains, we continued our hike through the woods lined with all kinds of trees and bushes, all competing for sunlight. As we reached the other end of the forest, we were rewarded with great view of the other side of the island.

The sight of towering cliffs surrounding the island and waves crashing against the rocks was quite spectacular. It made us feel refreshed and appreciative of rich nature on Tachai Island which of course, we didn’t forget to capture every impressive moment on the heavy cameras that the team painstakingly carried up with them.

It’s time for a little fun under the sea so our attentive guide arranged our team a snorkeling tour to a wonderful sight abundant with all kinds of fish and marine species, large and small. We eagerly put on our masks, fins and snorkels then dove right into the inviting water. What an incredible sight lay in front of us! Colorful corals and amazing fishes were everywhere and we enjoyed every single moment of it.

The atmosphere at Tachai Island during our trip was impeccable. The sky was bright blue, the sand powdery soft and the water sparking clear against the sunlight. We were happy to see how rich nature still is here and felt thankful to be able to experience such pureness.

Dos and Don’ts when visiting Tachai Island:1) Don’t touch or harm natural resources such as corals and plants. 2) Don’t feed the fishes or other marine species as this could interfere with their ability to find food (Tachai Island is closed 6 months a year).3) Do bring necessary accessories such as large-brimmed hat, sunglasses, sun block, etc.

If you were to ask a Phuket or Phang-Nga local about Sarasin Bridge, no one would likely deny having heard of it. This concrete bridge was built over 40 years ago and has a length of 660 meters. It connects Phuket and Phang-Nga together so conveniently that you could get from one side to the other in a matter of minutes. As for the name, it was taken after one of Thailand’s former Prime ministers, Mr. Poj Sarasin, as a commemoration of his great achievements.

Those who are 30 years and older might have seen a movie called “Saphan Rak Sarasin” or ‘A Love Story of Sarasin Bridge’. It was a tragic love story of a young Phuket couple who were madly in love. The man was a local bus driver while the woman was a teacher with promising future. Naturally, they did not receive the blessings of the woman’s parents and was left to face many obstacles. Eventually, they decided to jump over the bridge to be together even in death.

Sarasin Bridge has served countless numbers of vehicles that had commuted over it for four decades. Now, the eroding bridge is old and can no longer bear as much weight so it is being replaced by a newer, stronger one.

Apart from the 360 degree vistas from the bridge, there is a white viewing tower right in the middle of it. The octagonal structure is two stories high and shows off the nostalgic grandeur of Sino-Portuguese design.

While waves crash against the boulders below, up on the bridge you can see boys and men trying their skills at fishing, young couples holding hands as they fall into steps, and people eagerly waiting for the sun to set into the ocean. This kind of heart-warming sight can be seen here everyday of the week, and it’s the kind of pleasure that costs nothing at all.

About 30 km. from Phang-Nga town, there’s a small fishing village hidden in Phang-Nga Bay that someone told us about, so we decided to go check it out. Once there, we were drawn towards a small house with open sala which jutted out into the ocean. After inquiring, we discovered that it was a homestay cabin built a short distance away from the host’s own home for guests’ privacy.

We arose early in the morning and went for coffee at a local eatery. Without having to hurry off anywhere, we lazed back and watched the friendly villagers go about their days selling their live catch to restaurant operators in Phuket and Phang-Nga. We were told that the main occupation of the locals here is oyster and fish farming, a trade passed on from generation to generation.

Sitting back, we noticed a group of villagers attentively trampling on something so we went up closer and learned that this was how they cleaned mussels. This type of shell thrives in mud so they had to be washed thoroughly before they could be sold in the market.

Later on in the morning, we took a boat tour around Phang-Nga Bay to admire beautiful limestone mountains and beautiful sceneries. There, we came upon Tang Lane Beach, the habitat of tiny red crabs, and went on to the nearby Song Pee Nong Mountain which is a landmark dividing Phang-Nga and Krabi.

During the boat ride, we chitchatted about the lovely Ban Tai community among ourselves, occasionally stopping to say hello to passing fishermen. As the boat approached Chong Lad or ‘Curtain Mountain’ (the name came from the shape of the mountain that looks like an opera stage with curtains), we brought out the canoes and rowed gingerly around the bay, admiring natural sceneries and schools of fish down below.

After a few rounds of canoeing, we hopped back onto the boat and headed for ‘Tham Pee Hua Toh’ or literally translated, Cave of the Big-Headed Ghost. Inside, there were 163 pre-historic cave paintings dating back 3,000 years ago scattered among limestone formations hanging from above. This number is considered the largest found in a single cave in all of southern Thailand up to date.

The Ya Ya, or as called by the Southern Chinese locals ‘Pua Ding Dae’, actually means ‘half long, half short’. The dress is a mix between Chinese and Southern Malay clothing styles, which is a sarong bottom worn with tapered lace or cotton blouse with trimmings around the neckline, waist and sleeves. The length comes down to the upper hip with 3 sets of buttons lining the front.

Along both sides of the road in the central part of Phuket, Sino-Portuguese style buildings stand elegantly as though to show off their heritage. Most of them now serve as fabric stores which have been in operation for many generations. If we could travel back in time, this street would have been crowded with fashionistas parading around in their beautiful Ya Yas.

เรมจากทองหยบทมลกษณะเปนจบ 5-6 จบ งามเหมอนดอกไมสสมอมทอง มความหมายวาจะหยบจะจบอะไรกเปนทองไปหมด สวนทองหยอดทเปนลกกลมเกลยงเลกๆนนกหมายถงรำารวยเงนทองไมรจบ ใชจายไมรจกหมดสน
Starting with Thong Yip which means ‘Gold Pinching’, these bright orange-colored sweets, primarily made from egg yolk and sugar, look like golden flowers with 5-6 petals. Its name implies that whatever the hand touches will turn into gold. Another item which is quite similar is the ‘Thong Yod’ or ‘Gold Pouring’ which are small roundish orange balls. The name implies eternal wealth and abundance.

The third item is ‘Foi Thong’ or ‘Golden Thread’ which is actually one long continuous strand of similar mixture folded over and over until it forms one flat piece. The strand mustn’t be broken otherwise it will bring bad luck like the relationship of the bride and groom will be cut short. As for ‘Thong Ek’ which means first or foremost, it signifies a strength that outshines all competitors.

Kumi is a Japanese lady who loves Phuket island and does not hesitate to take flights from Narita to Bangkok and Phuket whenever she is free from her busy routine work.
Is this your first time in Phuket ?No, this is the seventh time and also for the honeymoon.
Where is your attraction place in Phuket ?Old town. Especially , Thalang Road and nearby where I can stroll around in the afternoon and taking photos. I have more than 500 photos of Phuket Old Town in my photo albums. I love the old build-ings on the left and right sides of the road. As an architect, Sino Portuguese is my favorite style. The last time I came here, I bought the local dresses from the old shops for my mother and the younger sister. They like these dresses very much and try to find out the prop-er occasion to wear. I visited Ban Chin Pracha for several times and feel more than happy of seeing the nice floor tiles in that house. Thanks the owners who can keep their belongings in good conditions for a long time and showing them to the public. Beside this, the big trees around the house also makes feel fresh and lively upon arriving there.
Would you like to promote Phuket to another travelers ?Of course, I will let them know how beautiful Phuket city is ! and will invite them to visit Phuket at least once in their lives.
