Saint Joseph Basilica March 11, 2018 3

Stewardship Note: Of all the wonderful gifts that God has given to us, the gift of His own Son is truly the great-est. How can we ever thank God for a gift like that? God does not ask us to sacrifice our own precious firstborn, but He does ask that we are grateful and generous with our God-given gifts and that we nurture and develop them and return with increase.

SCHOOL SAFETY AND SECURITY With the massacre of children from the Parkland High School in Florida to Sandy Hook CT and many other places of our country, the lives of many parents changed sharp ly and dramatically. It was an overwhelming fee l ing o f unspeakable gr ie f , f r u s t r a t i o n , a nd ange r w i t h

government, police, and health care officials. Insane individuals purposely and willingly snuffed out the lives of innocent children before they could reach the fullness of life. Debate and discussions intensified in the public arena to change our Federal and state laws. There is mounting parental frustration at the politicians who are unable to establish policies which could effectively protect innocent children in schools. Although it is important to begin with changes in the law, legislation by itself cannot solve the problem. There is a compelling reason to restore family stability and to enforce principles and values based on Judeo-Christian tradition which have guided generations for centuries. We may ask the question Has American society reached the level where great ideals and ideology appear to be too high and the present reality of subculture living on the surface of life appears to be the norm? If this is the case then Hollywood and the local bar’s clowns become the leaders and the teachers of life. The national discussion on these issues is of paramount importance because children’s safety is the obligation of every citizen of this country. Here at St. Joseph the protection of our children is our highest priority. We have recently upgraded and electronically-secured our school’s Lincoln Street entry door at a cost of $5,000. All of our school’s entry doors are now equipped with high-security hardware and electronic devices. Other internal security measures are being introduced as well and parishioners will be informed in our next bulletin.

Today, the Fourth Sunday of Lent, is what is called Laetare Sunday. Most of us are quite accustomed to the Mass being conducted in our native tongue, and we may have lost track of the fact that Latin is still the official language of the Church. On occasion Latin reasserts itself. This Sunday is one of those times as Laetare means Rejoice in Latin. In the Introit to the Mass (the entrance antiphon) it begins Laetare, Jerusalem (Rejoice, Jerusalem!). The actual midpoint of Lent occurred this past Thursday, and this day has traditionally been viewed as a day of celebration, when we sort of lessen the soberness normally attached to Lent. You may notice some changes in the church itself in terms of environment, and priests and deacons have the option of wearing pink or rose vestments rather than purple or violet. This Sunday has a corresponding day during Advent called Gaudete Sunday. The point of both these days is providing us with encouragement in the midst of our penitential seasons. As part of this more upbeat attitude and approach to our celebrations of Mass this weekend, there is a focus on

salvation and redemption, which is the reason we have to rejoice.

THANK YOU TO OUR HEATING SYSTEM DONORS! Many, many thanks to all of our wonderful parishioners who gave donations for the replacement of one of our Basilica’s heating units. Your support has been truly outstanding and not only helped pay for all parts and labor of the new heating unit but your continued donations have helped us establish a seed fund that will be used to

replace our second heating/cooling unit if when that becomes necessary. As you may know, the second unit is nearing the end of its 20-year life

span. Each and every donor is so very important to our parish.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS WITH MARY On Friday, March 16, at 7pm the Holy Rosary Sodality will hold the Stations of the Cross with Mary devotion.

Druga kolekta w przyszłym tygodniu będzie przeznaczona na The Catholic Relief Service.

Ten,
