GRANT BRYANT

Selwyn bus users could face shake-ups after a damming report sparked a move to over-haul Christchurch’s entire pub-lic transport network.

On Thursday, Environment Canterbury commission-ers agreed a joint committee should be established to over-see the public transport system.

It was proposed the commit-tee would be made up of rep-resentatives from Christchurch City Council, the district coun-cil, Waimakariri District Coun-cil, and ECan – meaning the Selwyn district will get a say in any reorganisation, should it choose to join.

ECan commissioner Rex Williams told the Selwyn Times the benefits of a joint commit-tee centred around group deci-sion making.

“This proposed joint commit-tee will enhance public trans-port in greater Christchurch by enabling a completely in-

tegrated decision-making pro-cess instead of having separate decision-making processes,” he said.

District council business re-lationship manager Stephen Hill said it was too early for any decision to be made, but a report would be prepared for consideration by the district council at its first 2016 meet-ing on February 10.

The scathing report high-

lighted Canterbury’s falling bus patronage, in spite of a route overhaul and the opening of the central Christchurch bus interchange.

The report states that al-though “only a relatively small proportion of greater Christ-church public transport ser-vices operate in Selwyn and Waimakariri districts,” the ser-vices were significant for those communities.

The report summed up the differences between pre and post-earthquake bus services as “dramatic.”

These were caused by “sub-stantial” revenue losses after the earthquakes and a raft of ongoing problems including conflict between the Christ-church City Council and ECan, resulting in a failure of the general public to start reus-ing public transport on a pre-quake scale.

Mr Williams said that rather than implement some of the re-port’s recommendations which could take two years, estab-lishing a joint committee could be achieved within weeks if all the local authorities agreed to the move.

Mr Williams said there was an average of 4597 trips per month based on a monthly average over the year for the route 80 and Yellow Line bus trips that go to and from Sel-wyn.

Selwyn could face transport overhaul

Environment Canterbury commissioners are concerned proposed funding changes to the national SuperGold scheme could hit local ratepayers in the pocket.

Currently cardholders, which include those aged over 65 and anyone under 65 who receives superannuation or the Veteran’s Pension receive free off-peak travel on public transport.

Mr Williams said the Government appeared to have focused on the costs of the scheme, rather than the benefits.

Councils could not charge SuperGold cardholders a partial fare to cover any funding gaps, which meant shortfalls would have to be covered by rates or increasing fares for other passengers - or ECan might have to consider opting out of the scheme.

Canterbury’s SuperGold population is expected to grow by 21 per cent from 2013 to 2018. Williams said ECan potentially would not be able to meet future growth in this age group if funding was decreased.

Total Fire Ban in place in Selwyn

A prohibited fire season (total fire ban) is now in place in Selwyn.

Under the restrictions no outdoor fires can be lit in the district. The burning of crop stubble is also not allowed. Gas barbeques with a high pressure water source at hand are allowed but not charcoal barbeques.

Fires are also not permitted in Council reserves.

To help reduce the fire risk, if you have lit any fires in recent months please check that these are fully extinguished as fires can easily ignite in the current conditions. You should check the embers are extinguished and douse these with water if needed.

Over summer, Selwyn District Council will be issuing alerts on days when the fire risk is high. You can receive these alerts by registering at www.selwyn.getsready.net and enter your details. To subscribe to the emails tick the ‘Fire Risk Alert’ option under the household needs section.

On days when the fire risk is high we recommend avoiding operating lawn mowers or other machinery during hot weather as sparks can easily ignite in these conditions, and waiting until the weather is cooler to mow laws or operate machinery. If you do need to use machinery or a lawn mower, having a source of water nearby for fire firefighting is advisable as a precaution. It is also important to regularly check and maintaining machinery and equipment so it is safe to operate.

Unauthorised fire charges increased

Please note that the fee applicable for unnecessary callouts to volunteer fire brigades in Selwyn when people start fires in breach of fire restrictions has increased from $575 to $1150. This charge is provided to local volunteer fire fighters and the increase recognises the significant cost involved in attending unauthorised fires.

We appreciate your help in helping to protect lives and property from the risk of fire this summer.

People thinking of lighting il-legal fires may be in for a shock if caught this summer.

The district council recently voted to increase the charge if people breach fire restrictions and light unauthor-ised fires.

The minimum charge payable for unauthorised fires where local vol-unteer fire fighters attend call-outs has increased from $575 to $1150.

The money from the charge is provided to local volunteer fire brigades.

Currently a prohibited fire sea-son is in place across Selwyn, which means that no outdoor fires can be lit except for gas barbecues.

Said Selwyn principal rural fire officer Douglas Marshall (above): “The increased fee recognises the serious nature of

lighting a fire during a restricted or prohibited fire season and also that people who ignore restrictions waste the time of volunteer fire fighters who need to be available to attend genuine emergencies.”

The charge can be applied in rural areas in a restricted or prohibited fire season if people breach fire restrictions or at

other times of the year when fire safety guidelines are not followed.

Mr Marshall said that it is very important to have a policy in place which deters people from lighting fires in conditions when it is unsafe to do so.

“Fires which are started when a prohibited fire season is in place and the fire risk is extreme

put the community at risk. The increased charge sends a clear signal to people who flout the rules that this is unacceptable,” he said.

He said where firefighters re-spond to unnecessary call-outs because people have lit fires when they are not allowed to or haven’t followed fire safety guidelines, it is appropriate that the person who started the fire should pay for this cost.

If the cost of responding to the fire is higher than $1150, a higher charge may be imposed to recover the actual cost of sup-pressing the fire.

Mr Marshall said it is impor-tant that all property owners have insurance which covers fire damage, firefighting and public liability insurance.

“Property owners who light fires when restrictions are in place will often say they didn’t know about restrictions. Cur-rently Selwyn is extremely dry and people need to exercise some common sense and not light fires in these conditions,” he said.

Lighting illegal fires comes at a higher price

DETERRENT: Fees are up for breaches to fire restrictions in a bid to minimise the number of people lighting illegal fires.

Minimal charge payable – $1150

Amy Adams, Selwyn MP

For most New Zealanders, Christmas is a time of celebration. It is a time for gathering together with family and friends, for giving gifts and sharing special meals. Often alcohol is a part of these festive events.

However, many areas of Selwyn are rural or semi-rural, which means that social events involving alcohol can lead to instances of drinking and driv-ing.

I know many of our local bars and restaurants offer courtesy vehicles and keep an eye out for individuals who may be at risk. It is often when events are at private homes that there can be a danger of people thinking they’ll be okay or not wanting to be a nuisance by calling a cab or asking someone else to drive them home.

For hosts wanting to encour-age their guests to drink re-sponsibly, one option is to offer low-alcohol and non-alcoholic drinks.

Under the 2013 alcohol

reforms, alcohol displays and promotions can only be in a single area in supermarkets and grocery stores, to help limit how much shoppers are ex-posed to them.

However, the current word-ing of the definition of alcohol means that low-alcohol and non-alcoholic beer and wine cannot be displayed in this single alcohol area, which can make it difficult for customers to find these products.

It is also irritating for super-markets not to be able to place these non-alcoholic products alongside alcohol when as a so-ciety we are trying to promote responsible drinking.

To remedy this situation I have introduced a new bill to Parliament which will permit supermarkets and grocery stores

to display low-alcohol and non-alcoholic beer and wine in the same area of the store as regular alcohol. The Bill is ex-pected to have its first reading next year.

As this is my last column for the year, I would like to wish all the readers of the Selwyn Times a safe and happy Christ-mas. I hope that you have the chance to relax and spend some time with family and friends over the summer holiday break. Please take care on the roads if you are travelling.

If you have any concerns or issues that you think I may be able to assist with please contact my office in Templeton for advice. The office will be closed for the Christmas-New Year period from December 23 and will re-open again on January 18.

Have a safe and happy Xmas

SOAP BOX

District councillor, Sam Broughton

As it is with the end of most things, the final days of 2015 allow us a chance to reflect and look back on the time just gone, to hope and plan for the year ahead.

As we look back on Sel-wyn’s year we have continued to lead NZ in percentage pop-ulation growth so I thought it would be good to identify one of the things I treasure about rural living: Country people acknowledge one another.

It is an unmeasured and undervalued part of rural life. It’s as easy as the flick of your fore fingers from the steering wheel acknowledging other drivers, or walking with your eyes up smiling and saying hi to people as you walk past them.

Over the past 10 years of working with hundreds

of young people I have not encountered many immune to low self esteem. Plenty of us carry this insecurity into adulthood which leads to building emotional walls and isolation.

To walk past one another with an acknowledging smile reinforces that other people matter and that the other person in that moment particularly matters. It builds connection and recognition, and in a small town you are likely to bump into them again soon if you continue to shop locally.

Let’s build on this friendliness as our community grows and develops. Growth brings change and this new diversity can help us own our current identity and embrace the opportunities that change brings. New faces, new cultures, new shops in town, new owners, new kids on the bus and new neighbours are all chances to share our country treasure: You matter, I matter, we matter.

Time to reflect on the past year

A Lincoln café will soon be supporting business owners in third-world countries, thanks to the idea of a young entrepre-neur.

The Rustic Bakery and Café is on board with the Global Foodie Project, which will be taking a percentage off certain marked-up items and sending the money to food start-ups, creator Katie Talbot said.

“It works through World Vi-sion’s microfinance, so we know they’ll get the most money to the field.”

The money will go straight to business projects in Cambodia. The idea was sparked when Ms Talbot spent time with hill tribe women in Vietnam.

“They’re out on the streets probably 16 hours a day mak-ing and selling [their products]. Their business success is owned by them and it’s their liveli-hood.”

Ms Talbot, 20, saw the women just needed a boost to make their businesses work better. So her idea, the Global Foodie Project, will start early next year with a pilot in Lincoln.

Rustic Bakery and Café own-er, Liz Zhang, said she jumped at the idea because it’s a cause that’s close to her heart.

“I come from China, so I know how people are poor and

it’s great if you can help them start their own dream. This café is my own dream, and I guess that everybody has their own dream.”

If the pilot goes as planned,

the idea could be rolling out in cafes across New Zealand by around mid next year – meaning your coffee dates could be help-ing business start-ups in third world countries.

The district council is getting into the festive spirit, spending more than $3500 on sending gifts and cards this Christmas.

District council chief executive David Ward (right) said it had sent about 170 Christmas cards to various organisations, agencies and individuals.

He said the total cost of that, including postage, was $438.

District council staff and volunteers receive a token of cheer, however, external parties do not get any gifts.

“Council staff and some volunteers will receive a small gift (a box of chocolates) in acknowledgement of their service during the year. Total cost is $3128,” he said.

Individual township committees have discretionary budgets which they are able to spend on Christmas decorations, but those costs have not been billed to the system yet, he said.

The managers of high-country Flock Hill Station and angling organisations have joined forces to protect a salmon spawning stream flowing from Lake Pear-son into the Waimakariri River.

Richard and Anna Hill have also created a buffer around hourglass-shaped Lake Pearson, alongside alpine State Highway 73 connecting Canterbury and the West Coast. They will not cultivate, fertilise or graze cattle inside this 50m strip.

Land sloping into Lake Pear-son is one of 25 sensitive lake zones identified by Environment Canterbury as highly valued and highly accessible.

The Hills are working with North Canterbury Fish & Game and the New Zealand Salmon Anglers Association to look after spring-fed Winding Creek. A 2.2km fence has been built to keep cattle out of the creek, nearby springs and a 20ha wet-land protected by neighbouring Craigieburn Station.

Gorse and broom have been sprayed with herbicide so native tussocks, rushes, sedge, toetoe, matagouri and other shrubs can gradually take their place.

Winding Creek is one of five main salmon spawning streams feeding into the Waimakariri River. Salmon, rainbow trout

and brown trout are present together with native longfin eel and upland bully. Canterbury drinking water will also benefit from the project, being sourced from Waimakariri aquifers fed by runoff from the river’s upper catchments.

“In the early days we had our ups and downs but now we’re a team,” Mr Hill said of the resto-ration effort that started in 2011.

Emily Moore, North Canter-bury Fish & Game officer, said anglers had been unhappy with an increase in sediment in Can-terbury spring-fed creeks.

“It gets into gravel where fish lay their eggs which is hopeless for spawning and also native invertebrate numbers,” she said.

Winding Creek was still in

good condition and this project would help keep it that way.

Only the Lake Pearson outlet and a shingle fan running to-wards the lake are fully fenced. Sheep are allowed access along the rest of the southern margin to drink, grazing to the water’s edge. The Department of Con-servation is monitoring how well this approach works.

There was compromise on both sides.

“Ideally sheep as well as cattle would have been fenced out of Winding Creek because they graze overhanging vegetation which creates shade liked by fish. On the plus side, they help control weeds,” Mrs Moore said.

Ring-fencing Lake Pearson would see rank grass and mata-

gouri choke the margins, ruining the iconic view, Mr Hill said.

“If we got a dollar for every car that stopped on the bend by the lake to take a photo we would not be farming.”

However, he said the lake was not the clear blue many remem-bered. A large spring flood in 2013 was responsible, spilling silt and sediment into the lake, turn-ing the water cloudy overnight.

Close to $170,000 has been spent on the Winding Creek and Lake Pearson projects including $106,000 in Immediate Steps grants from the Selwyn-Waihora Zone Committee.

As managers of a sensitive lake zone, the Hills are required by the Canterbury Land & Water Regional Plan to prepare a farm

environment plan for the Lake Pearson catchment.

Going beyond this, they opted to write a farm environment plan for the whole 14,500ha property. This will guide deci-sions such as how many sheep to run and which land could be cropped, grazed or retired with-out risking water quality.

No increase in nitrogen leaching is allowed in Lake Pearson.

ECan zone delivery manager Judith Earl-Goulet said as a high country lake, it was especially vulnerable to enrichment due to its small volume of water rela-tive to the size of the catchment, and how long it stayed there.

“Careful management is needed because this can result in unsightly algae and aquatic plant blooms which affect fish and invertebrate habitats and can make lakes unsuitable for swimming,” she said.

It took a long time for a degrad-ed lake to recover so action was needed to protect water quality.

The Land Air Water Aotearoa website assesses Lake Pearson water quality as ‘good’ based on phosphorus, nitrogen and chlo-rophyll content and clarity, and ‘high’ based on the number of ‘good’ native plants versus ‘bad’ introduced plants.

Salmon spawning stream under joint protection

Farmers should be planning for drought conditions as peak summer hits – but Environment Canterbury has signalled it will take a hard stance on enforcing water permit restrictions.

Last week ECan commissioner David Caygill encouraged efficient water use but underlined the en-forcement stance ECan would take.

“Farmers should be planning for drought conditions over the coming season and potentially beyond,” he said.

“They need to know Environ-ment Canterbury will be enforcing restrictions on water permits. Most

lowland and hill-fed rivers will be on restriction this season, some for many months.”

ECan’s monitoring programme included watching water use from more than 4800 approved users, plus farmers who were able to draw from rivers, who are subject to minimum flow conditions and must cease when rivers fall below a set level.

In the 2014-15 period 1039 ap-proved water users were monitored for compliance. Of these, 59 were found to be non-compliant and enforcement action is currently being taken.

Farmers have been experiencing low groundwater levels associated with the drought over the last two seasons.

“This has caused – and is con-tinuing to cause – significant anxi-ety for affected consent holders, particularly those . . . that depend on the aquifers recharging over winter,” Mr Caygill said.

Low aquifer recharging levels meant water restrictions for residential and commercial properties, including only being able to water lawns on alternate days were imposed on December 5.

SUMMER FUN: The hail storm that battered the Selwyn district was a source of entertainment for one Rolleston family. Jackson Hickling with dogs Boy and Jess got out in the backyard to play in the aftermath of the December 13 weather bomb. Christchurch dropped by more than 10 degrees to sit at 6.5 deg C by 2pm, experiencing high winds and hail.

Hailstorm adds to

festive spirit

More than 30 events are planned as part of the Summer in Selwyn programme.

The programme, starts with the Teddy Bear’s Picnic on January 13 and continues until late March.

Mayor Kelvin Coe said about 1500 people had attended last year’s events.

“This year the council is hosting more events than ever before and will also be hosting the World Buskers Festival for the first time as well as a new series of music on the green events,” he said.

The Teddy Bear’s picnic will be returning to Rolleston Reserve on January 13 from 11am-1pm. Selwyn families are invited to come along with their favourite teddy bears to enjoy the bouncy castles, toddlers’ obstacle course, face painting, House of Bricks and more. Teddy bears should look their best as there will be a competi-tion for the best-dressed bear.

The World Buskers Festival is also coming to Selwyn on Janu-ary 20 for a Buskers Roadshow in Lincoln. The roadshow will feature four of the world’s best street acts during the day and a variety of performance at night. The daytime performances will also feature a line-up of Selwyn talent who will perform as part of the show.

Family picnics are planned at Tai Tapu, Springston, Leeston, Lincoln, Dunsandel

and Prebbleton from January through to March. Four Music on the Green sessions are also planned at Leeston, Lincoln, Darfield and Rolleston. These sessions are a chance to pack a picnic and enjoy summer’s balmy nights while being entertained by local musicians. Selwyn parks and reserves are smokefree.

Families can also see screen-ings of drive-in movies at Rolleston, Darfield, Lincoln and Leeston, and kids can take part in summer skate jams at Darfield, Rolleston, Leeston, Tai Tapu, Lincoln and Prebbleton. Three pool parties are happen-ing at Darfield, Southbridge and at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre in Rolleston in January and February.

In addition to the 25 events organised by the district coun-cil, six community-organised events are also planned as part of the Summer in Selwyn programme. These include a Waitangi Day Country Picnic in the Park at Darfield Domain, a Rakaia River Terrace Run, walk and cycle event, a Children’s Day Celebration, Lake Crichton Triathlon and Duathlon, a Kim Hill Debate and The Ministry of the Mind Rock Concert.

• For details of summer events, visit www.selwyn.govt.nz/events or pick up a copy of the new 12 page Summer in Sel-wyn event guide from a Selwyn library.

GEORGIA O’CONNOR HARDING

A dancer from Leeston will soon rub shoulders with the writer of Mao’s Last Dancer, after gain-ing entrance to an Australian dance school.

Arabella Nimmo, 17, will study full-time at the Queensland Ballet School.

“It is a pretty amazing thing that I was able to get in and I was pretty surprised . . . it is exciting and overwhelming.” she said.

The artistic director of the school is run by Li Cunxin, an Australian-Chinese ballet dancer who the famous book and film Mao’s Last Dancer is based on.

Previously, Arabella has had the opportunity to attend a sum-mer programme run by Mr Li in Queensland.

On top of the nerve-wrecking auditions held in Brisbane ear-lier this year, Arabella had only just finished recovering from a major injury.

She had partially torn some

ligaments in the ankle and only had half a dancing term to pre-pare for the auditions.

“It was really difficult because I hadn’t been on pointe for so long and I had to quickly get

back into it to be ready in time,” she said.

Arabella’s dream is to dance for the Queensland Ballet com-pany, which the dance school is associated with.

Arabella currently trains with the Anneliese Gilberd Academy, which had five other students gain entrance to the New Zea-land School of Dance, Melborne City Ballet School and Algeria Dance Studios.

Academy director Anneliese Gilberd said she was so proud of her students for getting into a range of schools.

“It’s my job to help them get to the next level so as much as I’ll miss them it means that I’ve done the best I can.”

Dancing since the age of three, classical ballet has always been Arabella’s main focus in dance.

Moving to study ballet full-time at the Anneliese Gilberd Academy this year was a breeze for Arabella.

She said while she missed the academic side, she did not miss high school much.

POISE: Arabella Nimmo will be studying at the Queensland Ballet School run by famous ballet dancer Li Cunxin.

Christmas can be a lonely time for many, but the Lincoln Bap-tist Church is making sure all can share in a special dinner.

The Lincoln Baptist Church will hold its fourth annual Christmas lunch on Friday.

This year about 35 volunteers will be helping out to cater for more than 150 people, those without family and even inter-national students from Lincoln University.

Lincoln Baptist Church office administrator Karen Smitheram said previously a ‘‘wide cross-section’’ of people had showed up for the Christmas lunch in previous years.

“Last year there was a big group of Asian people from the Chinese Christian Church of Lincoln,” Mrs Smitheram said.

Organiser Naomi Gould said the church receives a great deal of donations including food from New World and Healthy Harvest based in Halswell.

“People donate salads and desserts for the day and that has come from a range of people.”

The day will also include en-tertainment for the children with a donated bouncy castle and the pastor of the church will do a short Christmas sermon.

Mrs Smitheram said Christ-mas is a way members of the church can give their time and resources to people in the com-munity.

“It is just our way of giving back to the community and en-abling that the Christmas spirit to people who might not have the opportunity to feel the joy of Christmas,” said Mrs Smith-eram.

Prebbleton School has received a $2000 grant to help encourage healthy eating and activity.

The school received the grant as part of the Nestlé Be Healthy Be Active initiative.

As part of the initiative, the money could be spent on a school vegetable garden, sup-porting a canteen audit or a bursary towards professional development for a teacher in the health and wellness field.

More than 140 classrooms took part in Nestlé’s

new ‘Health Star Rat-ings’ educa-tion re-source,

which saw children learning about healthy eating not just in the classroom but in kitchens, and supermarkets across the country.

Classrooms that signed up to participate also received a $50 voucher to help their inquiry come to life.

Prebbleton School had three classrooms participate in the initiative first spending time re-searching recipes, learning about packaged food and discussing international foods, before join-ing forces to cook a Singaporean lunch.

“We are incredibly proud to be a recipient of a healthy eating grant,” Prebbleton School Princi-pal John Russell said.

A 43-year veteran of the Elles-mere Golf Club has won its inau-gural President’s Service award.

Bruce Allan won the award which recognises outstanding ef-forts by members who volunteer their time to assist in the running of the club and maintenance of the course.

He joined the club in 1972 with his wife Rosie when the course was only 12-holes long.

Mr Allan began helping on the course by maintaining the bun-kers, and for the past seven years has been responsible for mowing the tee blocks and surrounds of the greens.

This required several days of work each week, and allows the club to keep operating costs low, and green fees and membership costs down.

Since then the course has been improved considerably, now 18-holes long with an extended clubroom and all fairways fully watered.

Mr Allan is still mowing the course, along with two other reg-ular volunteers, and he and Rosie play golf there regularly.

The couple farmed just north of the Rakaia Huts from 1961 to 1989, running a Hereford stud and sheep, as well as some

cropping.Mr Allan was a keen rugby

player, and later went on to serve as president of the Southbridge Rugby Club.

In the mid-1980s, he was club captain at the Ellesmere Golf Club, and in 1986 served as president.

The couple moved out of the district for eight years in 1989, running motels in Christchurch, Blenheim and Hokitika, Mr Al-lan also began to drive taxis.

Since returning to the district they have lived in Leeston and immediately re-joined the golf club.

FAVOURITE COURSE: Rosie and Bruce Allan say they enjoy the quality of the course, but particularly the friendly and casual atmosphere.

Lincoln’s Lucy Turner was the star of the show at the Puhinui Interna-tional Horse Trials in Auckland.

The 16-year-old not only won the Devi Heating Junior National three-day event title on her horse Carbon, but she also got second in the class on her pony Tallyho Mystic.

Lucy was delighted with the result.

“I am always in it to win it,” she said.

“It was a long time sitting in the truck to get here, but it certainly has been worth it.”

Another Canterbury rider Elizabeth Wylaars placed third on

Wairoa Ruby to finish off the South Island whitewash of the coveted title.

The next big class for Lucy will be at the Horse of the Year Show in Hastings.

Tallyho Mystic will be aimed at the Pony of the Year competition and Carbon will be in the two-star eventing.

Lucy said she preferred eventing over show jumping because of the challenges it presents.

“In show jumping you only have to be good at just show jumping but with eventing you have to be good at everything,” she said.

West Melton resident Emily Cammock had a mixed weekend.

In the main class, the Hon-da New Zealand two-star three-day event, the judges made a contro-versial ruling that her horse Lewis was lame in the dressage, meaning the end of the competition for the pair.

However, she did have some consolation in the results achieved with two of her younger horses.

STAR: Lucy Turner won the Devi Heating Junior National three-day event title with Carbon (left) and placed second in the same event with her pony Tallyho Mystic (right).

TOM DOUDNEY

The Rolleston Rugby Football Club has enlisted the help of former New Zealand sevens player Jason Tiatia as it prepares for its second season at the top level.

The club fielded its first divi-sion one side in the Ellesmere rugby competition this year and is looking to improve after fin-ishing sixth out of nine teams.

Club president David Egan said the first season had exceed-ed expectations.

“I was highly impressed as was everyone else involved in the club and the supporters,” Mr Egan said.

The team was complemented by a division three team, which

trained with them, and provided support, and players when needed.

This season they are looking to have teams playing in divi-sions one, two, and three, and are actively recruiting to try and build on their first season.

Pre-season training is well under way and Mr Egan said Mr Tiatia had been helping the coaches with some training programmes.

“After Christmas they will be present at training to put the boys through their paces.”

The Sunday morning trainings at Rolleston Reserve will halt for the Christmas and New Year break but will kick off in ernest next month.

Mr Egan said the club already

had a number of new players coming on board but was inter-ested in hearing from anyone else who might be interested in joining.

• Anyone interested in play-ing, helping coach or sponsor-ing any of the teams can send a message to the club’s Face-book page.

Tiatia to help club in new season

Tai Tapu resident Wilton Atkins has defended his Ellesmere Tennis Single Champs A Grade men’s title.

Atkins swept past Nigel Aymes in straight sets before dispatching Prebbleton’s Blair Dibley in a similar fashion.

Dibley had a much tougher time making the final with the third set against another Prebbleton player, Geoff Boorer, finally being resolved 10-6.

In the women’s B Grade Olivia Dyer had to dig deep to overcome Southbridge’s Kerry Sinclair.

Dyer lost the first set only to bounce back and win the second and third.

The B Grade men’s was played as a round-robin competition between four players with James Penny coming out on top.

The games were all finished in good playing conditions and

finished just in time before the thunder and lightening arrived.

The men’s and women’s dou-bles are to be played January 16 and the combined doubles January 17.]

Leeston-Southbridge turned up the heat on table leaders South-brook in Canterbury premier country cricket on the weekend.

Southbrook batted first and were reduced to 73 for eight in-side the first 20 overs as Cameron Norton ripped the batting line-up to shreds with four of his five wickets coming in his opening spell.

With the threat of being bun-

dled out for under 100, South-brook’s tail-enders showed some fight.

Sam Emerins scored 22 from 42 balls and Craig Renai put on 38 from 73 deliveries to take Southbrook’s total to a defend-able 154.

Leeston-Southbridge lost regu-lar wickets throughout their run chase, but 42 from Harry Cham-berlain and a 38 not out from

Sam Baxter was enough to get them home with three wickets to spare.

In other games, Lincoln came up short against a spirited Sefton side.

Lincoln lost by 54 runs, after Sefton got off to a great start bat-ting first with opener Matt Laffey hitting a smart 79 off 73 balls.

Sefton’s middle order could not build on that platform as

much as they would have liked and reached a par score of 184 for nine in their 45 overs.

It was enough though as Sef-ton’s bowlers put in a good all-round performance to restrict the Lincoln batsmen as only two Lincoln batsmen scored more than 20 and were rolled for 130.

The one day competition re-sumes on January 23 with three rounds left to play.

Short scoreboardsSefton 184-9 (M Laffey 79, H

Paterson 3-13) beat Lincoln 130-10 (J Benton 44, M Rowe 3-24, O Bragg 2-28) by 54 runs at Lincoln.

Southbrook 154-10 (C Renai 38, J Brown 33, C Norton 5-32, B Donkers 3-21) lost to Leeston-Southbridge 155-7 (H Chamber-lain 42, S Baxter 38*, D Power 3-29, D Boyle 3-26) by three wick-ets at Southbrook.

Greendale 197-10 (N Jenkins 40, J Thiele 3-44) beat Weedons 177-10 (B Agnew 39, N Jenkins 3-14) by 20 runs at Weedons.

Wickets tumble in close cricket matchSTYLE: Lincoln’s Joe Williams plays with a straight bat.

PACE: Ben Harper and Hugh Paterson (right) bowl to Sefton batsmen.

CLOSE: Arthur Paterson digs up the crease as the ball goes through to the wicket keeper.

WEEDSRemove them as soon as you can. For small ones, they will quickly wilt and wither into the soil if left out in the sun, so no need to pick them up. Mulching after weeding will prevent more from germinating. Once all that is taken care of, take time to enjoy your garden, and embrace the peaceful haven that is it, sometimes it isn’t about working on the garden, it’s just about being in it.

IN ALL parts of the garden, keeping on top of watering and weeding is essential at this time.

If you are able to easily capture greywater from the washing machine and shower, use this on any part

of your garden, especially the vegetable patch. Irrigation systems are worthy investments, set them up to come on every second day and avoid watering paths or driveways. Rainwater tanks are valuable, too.

TOD PALENSKI

What’s not to love about having eggplant in your garden?

The fruit of this tropical peren-nial is a perfect addition to vege stews, an essential ingredient in Mediterranean moussaka and French ratatouille, and great sim-ply sliced, sprinkled with salt and barbecued.

Look in your vegetable garden for a well-drained and sunny position to grow your eggplant, otherwise known as aubergine.

If you planted capsicum and cucumbers recently like I recom-mended, try popping your egg-plant seedlings next to them.

They’re good companion plants, as they all like the same condi-tions.

They also like to hang their fruit, so grow well planted in a pot or raised garden bed.

Grab some seedlings and simply plant around 20cm apart. If you don’t have a suitable raised bed or tub, add some straw or newspaper around the base of the plants to stop the fruit from sitting on damp soil and rotting. To help your seedlings establish well, making mini glasshouses out of old milk bottles.

Cut the bottom off a recycled

and clean milk bottle. Put the top over the plant but remove the lid to allow for a bit of wind circulation. Once they get growing you can remove the milk bottles.

The key with eggplants is not over watering. They like it quite dry and sunny and will rot if they get too much water. If you do water them, make sure you avoid overhead watering.

In around February, your fruit should be ready to harvest. For a tasty addition to your late sum-mer barbecues, simply slice the

fruit into about six to eight pieces (around 1cm thick each), brush with olive oil on both sides and barbecue. Once cooked, add some rock salt for taste and serve as a side.

Lastly, although eggplant is technically a perennial (a plant that dies down and pops up again for many growing seasons), in New Zealand it tends to behave like an annual because of our temperate climate, which means once you’ve harvested all your fruit simply remove the plants and replant next year.

COMPANIONS: Eggplant will grow well beside cucumbers and capsicum.

SUCCULENTSSuper succulents are back in vogue now. With their bold, distinctive form and texture, they have almost reinvented themselves from something that was once only grown as a last resort. Simple and easy to grow, cuttings strike and take within weeks, and they do thrive with little water once established. Consider decorating some tin cans or planting them up in retro tea cups and give them as gifts to workmates or family.

CHRISTMAS LILIESThe powerful perfume of these festive lilies heralds the silly season is upon us. To get the best out of them in the vase, remove all the foliage that will sit below the water line, fill the vase up to the top with water and change the water frequently. By doing all this their vitality will be extended by a good few days. In the garden, stake any that have become wobbly and water them deeply at least twice a week. After flowering, allow the stems to die down naturally and feed them at this time with bulb food to ensure a good show of blooms for next year.

VEGETABLESIt’s salad time. Remember to keep planting out more seedlings and sowing seeds of anything leafy and green. After you harvest one crop of lettuces and before you plant another, a sprinkle of vegetable

fertiliser and addition of compost or sheep pellets will perk your soil up and feed new crops instantly.

Even though it’s rather warm and the idea of winter stews, mashes and roasties are months

off, now is the time to be sowing parsnip seed. The seed has a very tough exterior so pouring boiling water over the rows after sowing will help the seed germinate more easily. Prepare the soil as you would for carrots and, to save on thinning, mix in some radish seed – these will be ready

first and, once picked, will make room for parsnips to fatten. Avoid planting celery

over the hottest months, as it tends to bolt and go to seed if the soil temperatures get too

high and dry.

ROSE PETALSFor those who may have a big day coming up, rose petals are a marvellous way of adding a touch of romance and colour to walkways, table settings and to the boudoir. They are also an easy fundraiser, too, and are popular items at fairs and fêtes. Simply pick the flowers on the morning or the night before they are required. No need to cover them in water, put them somewhere cool until they are needed. They make a lovely table decoration for barbecues, dinner parties and the like. Sprinkling a few in the loo always makes the men chuckle, too.

colour and chrome abounding everywhere. The rainbow has nothing on this bunch!

Enthusiasts are encouraged to bring along their ‘pride and joy’ to display for the normal adult per person gate fee. Use gates one or two. However, as this is the biggest and best show in the South Island, tidy vehicles of a good standard are preferred.

The arena fills up fast so arrive early to avoid any queues. This year there will be a secondary catch gate providing a ‘last chance’ to display your car before reaching the public car park.

Live bands are also a favourite at the

Record crowds swarmed to the Rangiora A&P Show Grounds last year to help celebrate the massive 25-year anniversary of

Muscle Car Madness. From meagre beginnings, this world-class

event has evolved and continues to thrive, giving its fans exactly what they want.

Last year, a brand new purpose-built burnout pad had everyone clambering for a good view of dozens of high horsepower cars shredding tyre rubber, to the cheers of the crowd. This event happens each day around 1.30pm and lasts for about an hour. With many people arriving early to get a good spot, the live band, Sign of the Firebird, is provided along with free water at the start area, to make the wait easier.

There will be 1000 to 1300 cars on display each day at Muscle Car Madness, with a large percentage of these day entries so both days can be vastly different.

The variety of cars on show spans all popular brands from many different countries. This includes restored classics, amazing rare muscle cars and hot rods with

event. There will be everything from little ‘kids’ school bands such as a bunch of 11-year-olds, to the infectious sound of the ‘Flyin’ Saucers’ direct from Australia. It is not unusual for 10 bands to play during the weekend, with patrons ‘kicking back in the sun’ on hay bales, taking the worries of the working week far away.

The Muscle Car Madness open show days are a family affair where there are plenty of fun rides for the children, ice cream, music and craft stalls for mum along with a retro beauty competition held later on Saturday afternoon, which includes a class for the children. To enter, venture into the huge retro zone and check out the cool dresses, handbags and shoes there.

Airbruh Venturi will be on site providing custom air brushing on cars, and top

pinstriper Chaz Allen will stripe anything for a small charge.

Entry to Muscle Car Madness is family oriented. Adults and children five to 15 years are $2; family concessions are $30 with no limit on children so bring the neighbourhood. Two day passes (public hours only) are $25 with public hours, Saturday and Sunday 10am till 5pm.

Brendan & the Team wish all our valued customers a Merry Christmas & Safe and Happy Holidays

[Edition datE] 3

If taking a break over Christmas and New Year or an extended holiday with motoring on the agenda, the motor vehicles and caravan will need to be in

tip-top condition for the journey ahead.A little prior preparation will help

keep the family safe while avoiding any disappointment caused by a vehicle breakdown. All that might be needed is a quick service to get the vehicles into sound mechanical order for open road travel.

“Checking oil and water before going on a trip can save you a lot of money in the long run,” advises Brendon Stephens from Burnham Auto Services, who adds that if a customer is not comfortable doing these things then they are welcome to call by and

one his team will sort this out for them.Brendon reminds of the importance of

inspecting tyre pressure and condition, which is even more important, given that many vehicles now have a year-long Warrant of Fitness. Incorrect tyre pressure will affect a vehicle’s handling and braking while investing in new tyres if the existing tyres are worn or bald may prevent a potential accident. It will also improve fuel consumption and vehicle performance.

While we might be diligent in having our cars regularly serviced, the vehicles being towed can get overlooked yet their roadworthiness is just as important.

“Make sure that any vehicle that will be towed is up to standard, with current

WOF and the pressure on all tyres set right. Th is includes boats and trailers,” says Simon Wilson from Rolleston Diesel & Petrol Ltd. “Have a quick visual over the vehicle to see if all lights including stop lights and indicators are working and that nothing is loose, wearing or chafi ng before driving away. Once you leave city limits it can be hard to get things repaired.”

Evan Weir of Engine Reconditioner Services recommends that boat owners fully service their boats before heading out on the water.

PREPARE THE VEHICLES FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Th is involves an oil and oil fi lter change, checking water levels and taking out all the spark plugs then winding the engine over to make sure that no valves are sticking, which also indicates whether there is oil pressure. It is also worth doing a visual inspection around the boat looking for split hoses, oil leaks and that hose clips are all tight as well as ensuring the battery is fastened and secured.

Lastly, look at the expiry dates for vehicle Warrant of Fitness and Certifi cate of Fitness. If due to expire over the holiday period, arrange for these to be carried out well before Christmas, as automotive businesses get very busy around this time, with many closed over the statutory holiday period including the days between Christmas and New Year.

With the maintenance carried out, you can head away feeling confi dent the vehicles will not let you down. Drive safely and defensively, looking out for what other drivers might do so you all have a happy holiday

Christmas is a time for celebration, spending time with friends and family and enjoying festive foods and drinks. Nutrition-wise, this

festive fare can be a challenge. Here are some simple tips to help you

survive the festivities:• Don’t try to lose weight over the festive

season. With parties, families and all the special foods that go with Christmas, it’s going to be just about impossible! Your main aim should be to maintain your weight (using some of the tips below!)

• Eat regular meals. If you skip meals you are more likely to fill up on high fat snacks. It only takes a few of these snacks to add up to more calories than your usual meal.

• Avoid going to a function hungry, you can easily eat a lot of party food in a short time.

Have a small snack beforehand like a bowl of cereal, yoghurt or a sandwich are quick and will help fill you up. It will also help if you are well hydrated, so try drinking a few glasses of water before you arrive.

• Deep fried foods, crumbed and battered foods, cheese platter and nuts are all high in fat. Choose fruit, vegetable or bread based snacks.

• If you are hosting the party, offer your guests a range of healthy snacks. Always popular are hummus or salsa dips with vegetable sticks.

• If you are taking a plate, make yours a healthy option. How about a platter of fruit currently in season?

• Listen to your body and stop eating when you feel full.

• Just say ‘No” to food – mentally practice

Festive Season Survival Tips

strategies to decline food offers. For example: “It looks amazing but I am full” or “I tried it and it was great”.

• Chat and mingle. If you are bored at a party you’re more likely to hover around the food table or seek out the serving platter. A good conversation can distract you from the food. Avoid standing right beside the food table or bar while you’re talking.

• Consider your drinks, they can add to the calorie count very quickly. Try diluting your alcoholic drinks, such as a spritzer (½ wine, ½ soda). If you prefer spirits, try a diet mixer. Lite beers are lower in calories and alcohol. Remember soft drinks, juices, punches, tonic water and flavoured mineral water can all have similar calories to alcoholic drinks.•Be aware of how much you are actually

drinking. Alternate alcoholic drinks with glasses of water and non-alcoholic choices. • Keep Active. Join in the Christmas backyard cricket game or go for a walk with friends or relatives. Remember you’re aiming for 30 minutes of physical activity each day. • If your regular exercise class stops over the Christmas break, plan other types of exercise - organise your friends and put a date in your diary.

If you do really overdo the festive foods or drinks, take a deep breath and start the next day afresh with healthy foods and some exercise. No fasting - just sensible eating. Remember, a few parties don’t make you overweight, it’s what you do all the other days of the year which count.

Be aware of how much you are actually drinking

Healthy snacks are always popular

After a carefully crafted marketing campaign, and 1 well attended open home, this fantastic property attracted multiple offers and was SOLD successfully. A few words from our happy vendor: “We first dealt with Mike around 4 years ago when purchasing the property that we have since just sold. The way in which Mike conducted himself at that time showed to us that honesty & integrity were important to him and left us, as buyers, feeling very comfortable. When it came time for us to sell we wanted our prospective buyers to have the same experience as we knew that this would play a big part in leading to a great result. Mike ended up achieving an excellent result for us in the sale of our property, again making the experience very comfortable and showing the honesty & integrity which lead us to Mike Pero Rolleston in the first place. We have recommended Mike to others and would not hesitate in continuing to do this.” With so many Rolleston homes on the market, there is plenty for buyers to choose from so it’s great to know that we are continuing to get great results. If you are thinking about a property move, call Mike Goatley to find out what we do differently and how we can get a great result for you too.

Just as any other room in your home requires planning, so do outdoor spaces. We look at a few areas that bear some careful consideration to achieve a functional, stylish and relaxing backyard retreat this summer.

Von

Outdoor rooms have their own unique challenges. As well as giving thought to architectural style, colour palettes, traffic flow, spatial

requirements and comfort, it’s important to factor in shelter from the elements and privacy from the next-door neighbours.

Important things to consider if you are reinventing your outdoor area from scratch or embarking on a big project are orientation and layout. Exposure to sun and protection from the wind, proximity to the house, pool, and views, and consideration for the kinds of activities to accommodate cooking, dining, entertaining, lounging, and sun bathing, are

also essential elements to think about. If you’re contemplating tackling a large-

scale project or even if your outdoor area could benefit from some bespoke elements, employ a landscape architect and an interior designer (many of whom have experience designing outdoor areas). Many have the ability to successfully design and manufacture custom-made furniture to suit your specific needs or have access to discounted products that will save you money.By bringing in the professionals, you can rely on their extensive knowledge and experience to design a functional and beautiful space you will love entertaining and relaxing in.

Consider access between indoor preparation areas to outdoor dining areas for optimal practicality. Ideally your outdoor area should be easily accessible from the house, with food preparation areas located near your indoor kitchen to reduce trips back and forth.

If this is not a viable option you may want to think about designing a dedicated area outdoors to a combined cooking and dining area.

Heating is an additional benefit, which will enable you to enjoy your outdoor areas in comfort for longer. Investigate the variety of options on the market that best

suits your requirements and current set up.

Integrate an awning or sun sails to patios adjoining the house or a sturdy multi-directional umbrella for shade over dining and lounge areas.

Gazebos and pergolas are stand-alone structures at the bottom of the garden or beside the pool are a good way to provide respite from the sun and wind.

Always work together with your designer or builder to ensure the style of any stand-alone structure is in keeping with the architecture of your home for a cohesive look.

Your guide to Show Homes & New Sectionsin the Selwyn District

[Edition datE]2

Christine Negus, New Home Consultant for Stonewood Homes has found that buyers often want answers to the

following questions. What does the price include?

Show homes are built to a certain specification so any variation to the standard design and fittings used will impact on the price charged with extras increasing the final price.

How long will the build take? This will be influenced by the building company’s workload, time taken in gaining Council consent and before that the time it takes to finalise the house plan where changes are made.

Can I make changes?Housing companies are generally flexible though this will depend on the company and many specify suppliers which may limit choice.

Christine also suggests that buyers consider and discuss two more points.

What is the best way to site the house on our section?Consider how maximum street appeal can be achieved while allowing for good useable exterior living areas. This may mean adjusting the placement of the house on the section so waste ground at the front is minimised taking account of building requirements.

What are the best value features that I should be putting into the house at the build stage?Features that often do not appear on the radar are higher rated and perimeter insulation, thermally broken windows, wider soffits on the North and West sides of the home to provide more protection from the sun and sufficient conveniently placed external taps, yet including these can have long-term impact on the budget while adding comfort or convenience.

QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN LOOKING

TO BUILDThere is so much to think about when building a new home and lots to learn along the way.

What’s the cost of the finishing touches? Those little extras like the granite bench top, free standing bath, bi-folds, wall-to-wall tiled bathroom and ensuite, and butler’s pantry that are not already included will push the price up so consider what you really do want and need.

Can we do a ‘turnkey’ option? Some people want a hands-off approach where everything is completed for them such as curtains hung and landscaping finished at which point they just pick up the key and move in.

What’s involved in the consenting process and why is it taking so long? Local Councils are charged with the task of ensuring that buildings in their area are up to standard so they can handle adverse weather conditions, will not endanger people and will be presentable. To ensure this, they require detailed plans be submitted for approval at which point a building permit will be issued. This vetting process can take time.

Don’t let your home disappear under the cloak of darkness when night falls. Be safe, add magical ambience and showcase architectural and landscaping features with practical and ambient lighting to enjoy your outdoor areas well after the sun sets.

After Dark

Vondom

Illuminate The LandscapeAdd drama by spotlighting a tree or other

focal point in your garden like a flower bed or water feature. Uplighting provided by spotlights accentuates the texture of tree trunks and creates a beautiful glow on foliage.

Inexpensive LED rope lighting creates a great uplighting effect when placed on the back of landscape bed edging. Roll out the tube lighting and pin it in place with landscape staples for a hidden glow. Make sure you position spotlights away from windows or your neighbours.

Wall-mount downlights cast a warm, gentle light on outdoor living spaces. Use them to enhance texture on stone walls. Plan ahead when incorporating a light into a wall, leaving access to wiring for maintenance or repairs.Dining At DuskEnjoy your deck after dark with well-planned lighting on your porch or deck. Set the scene with strings of fairy lights draped over a pergola or bundled into a ball beneath glass domes to make a luminous table feature. Hang tea lights in glass jars from tree branches to create a magical atmosphere whilst entertaining outdoors in the evening. Add an element of the unexpected with a light fixture that’s usually seen indoors, like a

chandelier, for example.Life AquaticThere’s nothing quite like a night-time dip in the pool. Add spotlights in and around your pool for safety. Add submerged lighting, using aquatic rated fixtures in ponds to create luminous light to enjoy fish and plants well after the sun goes down.Light The WayLead guests to the front door with adequate lighting to illuminate stairs or other potential hazards. The simplest and cheapest lighting option is solar-powered landscape lights which require no wiring, and therefore use no electricity. Simply place them in a sunny spot, and when dusk arrives, they automatically light up. A string of low-voltage LED lighting is the perfect solution for brightening a shady bend along a walkway. It’s a low-cost, easy DIY solution for illuminating a path.

Use motion-sensing lights to increase security at night. Install them in key spots like the garage and side doors where it’s useful to have light for short periods.
