Novemberben Máltáról…

Dear Friends,

Last week our class, the Junior 6, went on an outing to Valletta, the Capital city of Malta.

Page 4: Socrates – Comenius 1 Nemzetközi Iskolai Együttműködések 2008/2009

In Valletta, we visited St.John’s Co-Cathedral.

The ceiling of the Cathedral is covered by many beautiful

paintings by Mattia Preti. At the cathedral we saw many

other famous paintings amongst which the famous

beheading of St.John by Caravaggio. Caravaggio

painted this painting during his stay in Malta when he

was on the run from the Italian authorities.

During our visit to Valletta, we also visited the Malta

Experience. This is the History of Malta retold in a filmed

documentary. The Malta Experience is housed at the

Sacra Infermeria. This building was used by the Knights

of St.John as the hospital of the Order. The Sacra

Infermeria is found infront of the sea in the south of

Valletta. To get there we walked down all Merchants’

Street, where the daily market takes place.

We really enjoyed ourselves during this outing and we also learnt a lot about the history of our little island.Next time, we will tell you about our next outing.

The 100-Year-Old Christmas Tree

Motto:

“Oh, Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree,

of all the trees most lovely.”

A very old fir-tree was cut down and brought to the Big Square of the city to be decorated and guard the city at Christmas time.

A team of workers, a big crane, as well as a large lorry were needed to cut down the huge fir-tree and carry it from the forest to the city centre.

Page 7: Socrates – Comenius 1 Nemzetközi Iskolai Együttműködések 2008/2009

The fir-tree is 20 meters tall and its trunk is 65 centimeters thick.

The experts studied the rings in the tree trunk and calculated the age of the fir-tree:

100 years!

It is standing in the Big Square, waiting to be adorned and brightened by hundreds of lights to the joy of the children!

You can see it live at:

We are looking forward to hearing from you!

Best wishes,

Your Romanian partners

Januári e-mail Lengyelországból,

January News from Poland

In January we had a very nice event at school prepared by our pupils and teachers. Pupils sang the most beautiful Polish Christmas carols for parents, grandparents and friends. During this unusual concert we collected money for charity. We all wanted to help children in the orphanage in our city.

Romániából, January, 2009Hello Dear Partners, January is a special month for us, as on the 15th, year after year, we celebrate the birthday of Romania’s national poet, Mihai Eminescu. You may remember that we have mentioned him among the most famous Romanian personalities of the past. So, we had a special moment when the pupils recited poems written by Eminescu, sang songs composed on his lyrics and watched a movie about his life.

Page 13: Socrates – Comenius 1 Nemzetközi Iskolai Együttműködések 2008/2009

Eminescu’s poems have been translated in more than 60 languages and the pupils recited some of his poems in English, German and French. The most “daring” have also tried to translate one of his poems into English and then compare it with another version translated by an expert. In this way they realized that it is important to understand the poetical meanings as well as to have a deep knowledge of the English language.

Hope you enjoy our pictures!

Best wishes,

The Comenius Team from Romania

Magyarországról… NEWS FROM HUNGARY

The Dakar Rally (or simply "The Dakar"; formerly known as "The Paris-Dakar" or "Paris to Dakar Rally") is an annual rally raid type of off-road automobile race, organised by the Amaury Sport Organisation. Most events since the inception in 1978 were from Paris in France to Dakar in Senegal, but due to political instability in Africa, the 2009 Dakar Rally was run in South America, the first time the race took place outside of Europe and Africa. The race is open to amateur and professional entries. Amateurs typically make up about eighty percent of the participants. Despite its name it is an off-road endurance race, called a rally-raid rather than a conventional rally — the terrain the competitors traverse is much tougher and the vehicles used are true off-road vehicles rather than the modified sedans used in rallies.

Page 15: Socrates – Comenius 1 Nemzetközi Iskolai Együttműködések 2008/2009

Most of the competitive special sections are off-road, crossing dunes, mud, camel grass, rocks and erg among others. The distances of each stage covered vary from short distances up to 800–900 kilometres (500–560 mi) per day.

Hungary entered six teams.

We had one biker in the race, János Dési, riding a KTM.

There were three car teams: the Balázs Szalay – László Bunkóczy duo (Opel Antra), László Palik – Gábor Darázs team (Nissan Navarra) and the László Liszi – József Fenesi pair (Mitsubishi Pajero).

We entered two truck teams with Zsolt Darázsi, Bea Bahor, Róbert Kis (MAN) on the one, and Zoltán Szaller, László Pocsik, Tibot Csitári (MAN) on the other.

Of the car teams the Szalay – Bunkóczy and the Palik – Darázsi duos stood the best chance of achieving high rankings.

Page 16: Socrates – Comenius 1 Nemzetközi Iskolai Együttműködések 2008/2009

The latter team drove a factory model, so they had a better chance of avoiding mechanical failure.

If the car of the Szalay – Bunkóczy duo had broken, then the Darázsi – Bahor – Kis truck team would have helped them to fix it.

The first Hungarians to finish the race were the Palik team qualifying 21st in the overall standings.

Not only did we learn a lot about environmental issues but also we made new friends from another country, we played games with them and had the opportunity to see the sights in Athens!
