Sinking to the top

It’s a sunny morning in the Florida Keys. Agirl named Mehgan Heaney-Grier is sitting

in a small boat. There are fourother boats. Inthese boats areMehgan’s crew, spectators andthe press.Mehgan practisesa breathingtechnique calledhyperventilation. When she isready, she goesinto the water. Then she startssinking. Down toover 100 feetbeneath thesurface. She usesno equipment tohelp her.

Sounds crazy,doesn’t it? Not to

Mehgan. She freedives or trains almost

every day of her life! Freediving is sinkinginto water as far down as you can, and thencoming back to the surface in only onebreath. Mehgan’s first-ever freedivingrecord in the US was 155 feet. She cameback to the surface in 1 minute and 38seconds. Then, a year later, she made it allthe way to 165 feet!

So, what does it feel like to be so deepunderwater? Does it hurt? Is it scary? Orexciting? Or both? Mehgan has the answers. She says freediving is very different fromsports like soccer and basketball. For thesesports you need energy and adrenaline ifyou want to be good. For freediving youhave to stay very calm and relaxed.

When Mehgan is preparing to set a record, she trains very hard. She trains six days aweek, for four to six hours each day!Mehgan is not afraid of being so farunderwater. She likes the feeling that shecan go down there and escape fromeverything. ‘It’s like time stands still downthere and you feel weightless even thoughyou’re sinking really fast. It’s cool!’

1 Persoonlijke voornaamwoorden

I am Karen. (ik)You are Dave. (jij/u)He is my brother. (hij)She is my best friend. (zij)It is my dog. (het)We are Harold and Jessica. (wij)You are Mrs Halley and Mr Tiffy. (jullie)They are my parents. (zij)

Let op: I wordt altijd met een hoofdlettergeschreven, ook al staat het niet aan hetbegin van de zin.

2 De present simple

I like watching TV.You love comics.He likes tea.She loves rugby.It hates milk.We like playing football.You love cats.They hate reading.

I study a lot.She studies a lot.

I play in a team.She plays in a team.I buy a diving suit.He buys a diving suit.

In de present simple (tegenwoordige tijd)komt er bij he, she en it een -s achter hetwerkwoord. Dit geldt ook voor namen vanéén persoon. Lucy = she, dus Lucy loves rugby.

Als een werkwoord eindigt op -y, krijgt datwerkwoord -ies bij he, she en it.

Maar als er voor de -y een a, e, o of u staat, komt er bij he, she en it gewoon een -s achterhet werkwoord.

3 De present simple van to be

I am fond of reading. You are interested in skiing.He/she is into computer games. It is great fun.We are fond of shopping. You are into diving. They are fond of mountain climbing.

Het werkwoord to be betekent ‘zijn’. In hetNederlands verandert ‘zijn’ steeds weer vanvorm als je het over een andere persoon hebt(ik ben, jij bent, hij is, wij zijn). Bij to begebeurt dat ook.

Verkorte vormen van to be

I’m fond of reading. You’re interested in skiing.He/she’s into computer games. It’s great fun. We’re fond of shopping. You’re into diving. They’re fond of mountain climbing.

Je kunt de vormen van to be ook afkorten.Deze verkorte vormen worden vaak in spreek-taal gebruikt, maar je mag ze ook schrijven.

4 Ontkenningen met to be

I am not fond of reading. You are not interested in skiing.He/she is not into computer games. It is not great fun.We are not fond of shopping. You are not into diving. They are not fond of mountain climbing.

I’m not fond of reading.You’re not / You aren’t interested in skiing.He/she’s not / He/she isn’t into computer games.It’s not / It isn’t great fun.We’re not / We aren’t fond of shopping.You’re not / You aren’t into diving.They’re not / They aren’t fond of mountain

climbing.

Bored? Try something new!

Are you bored with all the usual sports, such asfootball, formula 1 or snooker? Then try somethingnew! There are plenty of exciting sports all aroundthe world, such as...

1 This outdoor activity is something for you if youlike danger and ironing. It’s especially popular inGermany. You take an iron and board (if possible)to a remote location and iron a few items oflaundry. This can involve ironing on amountainside, or taking an iron skiing, snowboarding or canoeing.

2 If you go to Randwick, England, you can see thissport. It’s all pretty simple: all contestants cometogether at the top of a steep hill and then try tochase and catch a 25 pound bouncing cheese. It’salso pretty dangerous: the hill is so steep thatyou’re likely to break a few bones while runningdown.

3 The Japanese have a very strange sense of humouras you can see in Hirado every year. Two babiesunder one year of age are put on stage facing eachother. Then a chosen man starts the competitionby screaming as loud as he can in front of thebabies’ faces. The first baby to start crying isdeclared the winner.

4 If you like throwing food, you should visit theSpanish town of Bunyol. Every year in August125,000 kilos of ripe tomatoes are brought to thetown on large wagons. On the signal, masses ofpeople start flinging and slinging tomatoes at eachother. After the event, which lasts for about twohours, water tanks are brought in to hose the townand everyone in it down.

5 Every year in May thousands of people bring theirfrogs to Angels Camp, California USA, for thiscompetition. All frogs must be at least four incheslong from nose to tail, and the winner is the frogthat can jump the furthest in three hops. Once atthe start, the ‘frog-jockeys’ are not allowed totouch their frogs until they have completed thethree jumps. The frog that performs best, wins noless than $ 5,000 for its jockey.
