2.In Khan’s YardScaffolds, ladders, and some decorative materials make the place topsy-turvy.At least ten Russian craftsmen are busy decorating. The finished part of the palace clearly shows that it has been turned into Russian style.

3.In Khan's PalaceA portrait of Genghis Khan.In front of the seat of Khan, the queen and the prince is gazing at each other face to face.More than ten maids are looking at the mother and son without say-ing anything. The prince threw himself into the queen’s arms:” Eej (mother), I am not going to Petersburg! ”The queen clutches the prince’s robe with a cramp, looking numb. The prince entreats again: “ Mother, I am not going anywhere! ” The queen shakes her head stiffly. The prince asked in despair: “ Why must we go? ”The teeth of the queen bite her shaking underlip with blood coming out from it slowly.

4. Military Band, Royal Carriage and Royal Guards are Oncoming. Some Mongolian herdsmen stand in the grass, looking at this troop which rides on in majesty.

5.In the Newly-built Camp of Ubashi Khan A huge tent of middle troops is set up in as many as ten yurts. Some Mongolian soldiers are still using ropes to stabilize the footings. The huge tent waves from left to right to the rhythm of the ropes being pulled.

Page 2: The Last Mongolian Army

Around the tent, stand some fully-armed and argus-eyed Mongolian soldiers nearby.

6.In the TentEmpty, with grass over knees uncleared. A ray of light shone on the portrait of Genghis Khan which is hung in the front. The portrait swings with the tent, as the light moves on Genghis Khan’s face from left to right.Ubashi Khan looks up at the portrait in the grass quietly, sitting cross-legged.Lama Zarsan sits aside, reciting the sutra silently while finger-ing the beads.Ubashi Khan’s shoulders start twitching.Lama Zarsan begins to run his beads at fast-speed, with his prayers speeding up. Ubashi Khan chokes and asks the master ruefully: “ Master, how can we end up like this?” Being silent, Lama Zarsan slowers his fingering the beads.Ubashi Khan: “ Master, master please! Answer me!” Lama Zarsan’s words are profound that it feels like these words are from the ancient times: “Nature changes, sun comes up and goes down, moon is not always at its full.”Ubashi Khan: “Could it be said that our ancestor — Genghis Khan’s greatness can’t be brought back?Is there any chance for us to have a hero like him? ”,Lama Zarsan : “ What goes up, must come down; what comes down, looks for peace. Lust is never limited. By obeying the will of God,the natural law, you can be a real hero.”

7. Outside the TentBosaler the company commander comes by riding a horse, jumping down and heading for the tent in hurry. A few warriors draw their side swords in a sudden to stop him from rushing in.Soon, a badly wounded battalion commander staggers along with a few injured soldiers. Seeing the brave coming back from the battle field, all the war-riors salute them with their swords up.Warrior A: “ Welcome back, heroes, who fight for our honor! “The commander arrogantly pushes the warriors aside and tries to go into the tent. However, after the salute, many swords lie across his chest. The commander is so pissed off that he draws his sword. So did his warriors. The imperial warriors are also not holding back, arraying around the commander. The sword falls from the commander’s hand for he is so exhausted that his body shakes before he falls down. His followers all put their swords back in sheaths and surrounded him.Bosaler is absolutely shocked at what he saw.

8. In the TentUbashi Khan: “Genghis Khan, our ancestor, carries swords and arrows and gunpowder, stepping on the unbounded lands. Many people were plunged in misery and suffering. Is that obeying the ‘natural law’? ”Lama Zarsan : “ Let people know how big the world is, so they can communicate and trade; hero follows the rules of nature to suc-ceed, so nature flourishes by right of him.”Ubashi Khan: “How great was our ancestor Genghis Khan and how pa-thetic we are now! Is the integration of the world that leads us to fragmentation, a natural law? ”Lama Zarsan : “ The rules of heaven are heartless.”Ubashi Khan: “ The rules…the rules of heaven? The only thing we can do, is to obey?”Lama Zarsan : “ Yes.”Ubashi Khan: “ What is the law that we should obey today? ”Lama Zarsan : “ Survive and seek peace, seek peace to get safe.”Ubashi Khan: “ Master, what you meant…was that, by achieving this pathetic purpose, a hero can also be made? ”Lama Zarsan : “ Understand the law and obey it, then be a hero! ”Ubashi Khan turns around, with a worn and resolute look.Their gazes meet.Ubashi Khan puts his palms together and bows: “ Master, give me some time to understand! ”Lama Zarsan lifts his hands, the two parts of the beads are pulled parallel. Lama Zarsan : “Khan, insight is understanding.”

9.Outside the TentThe followers support the commander with their hands, fill him with a leather bag of milk.Ubashi Khan walks out of the tent slowly. All the warriors step aside to make a path for him, half kneeling with their heads down. Ubashi Khan then walks quickly towards the commander and squats. He sadly stares at him without saying a word. The commander looks at him in deep sorrow as Ubashi Khan’s face covered with tears: “Khan, the war isn’t over! Nothing has ever changed, again, all of our Mongolian soldiers died first! ”Ubashi Khan runs his eyes over the survivals, standing up slowly. He tells the guards around him: “ They need to get some rest. Put out their fear with the best wine! ”Bosaler meanwhile kneels in front of Ubashi: “ Khan, the ambas-sadors of Catherine the great have arrived!” The commander struggles to get rid of the hands that support him, throwing himself on Khan’s feet: “ We must stop dying unworthy for them! We people are the strongest warriors in the entire world! Every time, we sink into the toughest situation, exchanging those turks’ lives with ours! There is not even a last man standing! Khan,

Page 4: The Last Mongolian Army

we didn’t bring shame. Is those greedy conquerors, they won’t give us a chance! ”Ubashi Khan can’t bear to look at him directly. He raises his head with his eyes closed.10.Outside the CampA squad of Cossacks is rushing towards the camp. They meet Ubashi and his cavalry head-on. The Mongolian warriors encircle the whole Cossack immediately. The leader of the Russian cavaliers shout out: “ Mongolians are cowards! You slipped away with the war not being ended! According to her majesty the queen’s law, your heads should all be cut off!”Ubashi Khan’s face turns ghastly black with rage, and simultane-ously, his gaze may frighten the life out of someone. The leader seems scared: “ Are…are you Ubashi? What I meant was…um…many cowards hide in your troop, and they must be taken away to get their punishment from our queen!” Ubashi Khan draws his sword from the sheath of his waist all of a sudden. All the warriors pulls out their swords and pushes their horses to pounce on the Cossacks.A short battle.A machete is raised above the leader’s head, and about to go down. Ubashi Khan yells out: “ Keep him alive!”

11.In Front of Khan's PalaceMilitary band strike with soothing drumbeat. On the footboard of the royal carriage, stands an ambassador of queen Catherine, who is dressed in tight army uniform, and has an air of superiority. She looks surly reserved. Behind the carriage, goes the royal guards in a square array.Ubashi Khan sits on the horse loftily. Behind him is the Mongolian army in loose battle array. The horses’ hooves of the royal guards are as steady as rock. The Mongolian’s horses clip all along. The Captain of the royal guards: “ Ubashi Khan, please get down from you horse, and be in readiness for the holy ambassador of her majesty the queen!”The captain of the Mongolian warriors: “ The ambassador of the queen, please step out of the carriage to accept Ubashi Khan’s re-quest of presence.”The situation becomes absurd. The ambassador’s facial expression changes as she is surprised just then. Now she seems to be hesitating.Ubashi Khan is calm as water, with his eyes looking into the dis-tance, as though he is immersed deeply in imagination. The envoy moves her feet, walks down the wooden ladder from the carriage, bowing with one of her hands across her chest.Ubashi Khan jumps off the horse, hangs his sword on the saddle and comes to the ambassador. The ambassador holds the letter in both her hands: “ It is in the command of you highness that…”

Page 5: The Last Mongolian Army

Ubashi Khan interrupts her: “ Are you a woman?”Those rude words makes the ambassador embarrassed.Ubashi Khan smiles slightly: “ I am not sure…Let me just treat you as a man for now! ”The pretty envoy is irritated with her face turning red in anger. Ubashi Khan gestures his warriors to let them bring the leader of Cossacks before the envoy.A warrior who rides a horse carries the leader with his arm down. The poor headman strikes out the air, and shouts: “ Let go of me! I am a loyal warrior of her highness! I can’t bear your savage-like assault!” The Mongolian warrior throws down the leader. Just as he was about to hit the ground, a bright machete split the body. The ambassador yells, stepping back. The royal guards draw their swords at the same time. The captain of the Mongolian warriors says loudly: “ This man, in-sulted Ubashi Khan and his warriors. This is the punishment he de-serves! ”The ambassador cools herself down. She then cast her deadly look at Ubashi Khan.Ubashi Khan is calm as usual, treating everything indifferently. The ambassador surly hates his heartlessness. She takes off her hat and throws it to the guard behind her.Her golden hair falls perfectly. Then she peers at Ubashi Khan with arrogance. There is slight tenderness in Ubashi Khan’s eyes as he is con-fronting this beautiful woman.A delicate hand reaches out in front of Ubashi Khan: “ I am the niece of Queen Catherine—Princess Bosnia, Nataliya Nikolaevna. ” A faint smile crossed Ubashi Khan’s face. He lifts up her hand and kissed it.

12.The Audience hall of Khan’s palaceA rackety and magnificent banquet.A few beauties are dancing the cheerful and broad-hearted Mongo-lian dance.Whole roast lambs, different containers with wine, mountains of fruit and fried food, milchigs are placed on the long table in the front of the hall. Well-dressed Mongolian maidservants shuttle between the tables. Under the portrait of Genghis Khan, Ubashi Khan and his queen sit there. The prince and Princess Bosnia are seated on two sides of the table closest to Ubahsi Khan.Ubashi Khan observes the people in different camps quietly, as if being able to understand how the royal guards and the Mongolian nobles indulge in such fine wine and food. The queen is trying to restrain herself from being too sad.The prince glares at the princess and holds the hilt of his side sword with his slightly shaking hand.Princess Bosnia mildly looks at the nervous prince. She is ponder-ing over what the prince is made of.

Page 6: The Last Mongolian Army

Constantine the master of ceremony walks forward and bows in front of Ubashi Khan. Then he turns around and says: “ The warriors of her majesty the queen, my honorable guests, I now announce you that her highness, the queen with holy spirit, had already conferred Earl Ivan Ely Iggy on Prince Asarai. Also, under the name of the Madonna, Prince Asarai shall be baptized and regarded as the god-son of her highness, in order to show respect for the queen. I suggest that Prince Asarai….I’m sorry…Earl Ivan Ely Iggy should propose a toast to the ambassador of the queen, our honorable Princess Bosnia!”The royal guards begins to cheer: “Ypa ( hurray) !”A few Mongolian noblemen stampede. However, they shyly quiet them-selves down when seeing most of the others stay calm. Prince Asarai looks at Ubashi Khan for further movements.Ubashi smiles, as if he wants him to decide it himself.Prince Asarai comes to the table and fills his bowl with kumiss, and then fills another with strong white liquor. A maidservant holds a tray and comes to the prince and the princess.Princess Bosnia rises to her feet with astonishment, reaching out her right arm to the cold and arrogant prince.Prince Asarai shakes his head when seeing her arm, picks up that bowl with kumiss. The maidservant holds the bowl with white wine and gives it to the princess.Princess Bosnia hesitates to get the bowl. The strong scent of white wine makes her knit her eyebrows.Prince Asarai holds the bowl with both his hands: “Me, Prince Asarai of Turehot. You, Princess Bosnia. According to the eti-quette of Mongolia, if we drink up this bowl of wine in our hands, we become friends!”Princess Bosnia comically says: “Wow, you’re eloquent!”Prince Asarai: “We Mongolians need friends,so, we learn the manners of welcoming our guests when we’re born!”Princess Bosnia says sincerely: “ You are a clever man, Holy Marry blesses you!”Prince Asarai: “ My father told me, it is always reliable to depend on yourself!”The princess admires him by nodding her head.Prince Asarai swigs down the wine.“ Hang on! ” Princess Bosnia starts to realize that the his wine is different from hers, “ Prince Asarai, are we drinking the same wine? I found the color different!” Prince Asarai: “ Different people, different wine.”Prince Bosnia: “ I want yours.”Prince Asarai: “ You have the chance before you take the bowl. Now it’s too late to avoid drinking it!”“What if I don’t?” She asks.Prince Asarai says: “ Refusing to drink the wine we offered means you are unwilling to be our friend!”The royal guards seem to be angry, ready for action.

Page 7: The Last Mongolian Army

Princess Bosnia asks: “ What if I let someone else replace me?”Prince Asarai answers: “A friend can not be replaced!”Princess Bosnia: “ Do you really want to be friends with me?”Prince Asarai: “As long as you are a friend, I am.”Princess Bosnia: “ Ok, then I will do!” Constantine: “ Your Highness!”She swallows it with her pretty blue eyes wide-open. Prince Asarai turns around and walks back to his seat.Ubashi Khan burst into laughter: “ Good! For the princess’ briskness, I will drink for company!” Princess Bosnia claps her hands animatedly because of the effect of the wine.

13.The HaremThe queen holds the prince tightly in her arms. “My son, you did great! You did great…” She says with her eyes filled with tears. The prince asks: “Mother, can I be a hero?”At this moment Ubashi Khan walks in and answers: “ Yes my son, you will. And your mission now, is to bear everything in a strange place like a hero!”Prince Asarai: “ Father, bearing makes a hero?” Ubashi Khan: “ Yes, the one who bears everything is a hero.”The queen’s body shakes. Prince Asarai struggles to free himself from his mom, standing in front of the Khan: “Father, I will never disappoint you!”

14.A garden in Slavonic style A statue of Mary nursing the baby Jesus, paintings of Russian Or-thodox on the wall, dazzling tulips…Ubashi Khan looks about and says: “This is not the kind of garden I love. From now on, I will live in a camp on the grass!” The queen whispers: “You can’t stomach all these?”Ubashi Khan: “ Right! They treated me as a heathen. But I will never believe in what they believe!” The expression on the queen’s face warns the Khan. “ My queen, are you…tempting me to speak like you?” The queen drops to her knees: “ Khan, I beg you, a child should never bear the things that a hero can’t!”Ubashi Khan smiles grimly: “ A hero? Are you jeering at me in your heart?”The queen: “ Khan, I just want you to figure a way out. Our son, is neither that “ Earl Ivan Ely Iggy”, nor the godson of the queen. He’s …he’s just a hostage!”

15.The sky seems low at dusk. Ubashi Khan rides slowly with some warriors along the Volga River.

16.Outside the Abakov mansionTwo royal guarding warriors stand with a musket in each of their hand.

Page 8: The Last Mongolian Army

Ubahsi Khan takes a look at the guards near the gate for a moment, looking deep thought. Just about he is to leave, the butler of the Abakov family—Segoule runs out in haste: “Khan! Khan! Wait a mo-ment!” Ubashi Khan stops and turns around.Segoule kneels down in front of the horse: “ My honorable Khan, you can’t just pass by without entering!” Ubashi Khan: “ There is a special guest in the house.”Segoule: “The ambassador came to visit my master.”Ubashi Khan: “Correct! She should be paying visit right now. After all, your family is the first to abandon the Buddha and believe in God.” Segoule: “ At least, I am still a Buddhist.” Ubashi Khan: “That I will remember. You are probably a piece of gold in the sand. ”Segoule: “ For the sake of the queen, my honorable Khan, please, come in. Oh no, I will ask my master to come to welcome you. ”Ubashi Khan: “ No need!” Cracking his whip, Ubashi Khan leaves with his warriors.

17.In the living room of Abakov’s mansionThe fine Russian feast is ongoing.Abakov: “Khan left? ”Segoule: “Yes, he knew you have guests here,so…”Princess Bosnia: “ Khan left because of me? I will go and ask him to come!”

18.Outside the gatePrincess Bosnia gazes at the dust faraway, as if losing something. Princess Bosnia mutters: “Is his arrogance intelligence, or stupid-ity? ”Constantine smiles full of mischief: “My dear Princess, the arro-gance of a man who thinks wrongly about his present situation, is definitely no intelligence. ”

19.In the interior hall of the government office of King BatuDecorated in the color of gold and jade but with an air of kitsch. The silver plates carry some European and Mongolian food. The match seems a little odd.The white-bearded Batu is learning to use knife and fork with his mind fully focused.Ubashi Khan considers this way of eating troublesome and puts those aside. Then, he reaches for the Mongolian knife which is in the hand of his warrior, and pares the meat by holding it in his hands. Afterwards, he takes up the lucid goblet to drink. The oil stain and the handprint with small fragments of meat is left on the glass goblet. Batu frowns when seeing this.Ubashi Khan: “Uncle, Turehot is at the point of survival. For our hundreds of thousands of people, I hope for your help. ”

Page 9: The Last Mongolian Army

Batu: “My dear nephew, are you trying to bring your uncle troubles? When you are happy, you look for worries. Just like those Arabs, sprinkling those weird seasonings on the delicious lamb?Ubashi Khan: “Uncle! My father charged me with the duty of finding a new home for my people. I will not give up fighting for his last words! ”Batu: “Right, your father have been hesitating his whole life, he refused to make obeisance to the Russian emperor, also he was not able to make his army strong. I conquered the lands and almost lost my own life in the ravine of Transcaucasia. Finally, I made it and attained peace. But he, he left his ridiculous wills to his son? Are we going to walk the same dangerous path of his because of his last words?”Ubashi Khan: “Uncle, it is true, that you are living a good life. But take a look at my people, there are soldiers dying in every single household every single year! How long will this last?” Batu: “ Oh, nephew, since the age of Genghis Khan, it has been the duty for a Mongolian soldier to die on the battle field! You don’t have to waste your time on such unachievable dream!”Ubashi Khan: “ Yes, we can’t build up another invincible empire. But I believe that, we Mongolians still have the power to win back a land of peace of our own.” “A land of peace?”Batu has his eyes wide open before bursting into laughter, “My nephew! You are more childish than your father! Do you know anything about childish? Childish equals to foolish!”The guard captain of Ubashi Khan— Selengjab suddenly pulls out the sword and points it at Batu: “You madcap, how dare you humiliate our Khan!”Batu is so scared that both his knife and fork drop on the table. “Selengjab! You, you want my nephew to bear the crime of killing his uncle?” Selengjab: “You must apologize for what you said to Khan. Other-wise, I will cut off your head with my machete!”Batu stares goggle-eyed at Khan. “Neph…My Khan, I,I didn’t mean to insult you! I just wanted to tell the truth!” Ubashi Khan stands up, throwing the cloth that cleans his hands on the table: “My poor uncle, please forget what we said today. As long as no one else knows, you are safe!”

21.In the interior hall of the government office of King BatuBatu has not yet recovered from the shock.Bayar, who is dressed in Russian clothes comes to his father Batu with his body lowered: “ Dad, I heard what Khan said. What is he gonna do? ”Batu does not say a word.Bayar: “Dad, Khan is planing on something stupid. The ambassador is still here, should we just…?”Batu fells Bayar with a blow: “You little bastard! Never mention it again or I will cut your ears!” He is extremely irritated.

22.Near Volga RiverUnder the moonlight, the river glints. Ubashi Khan stands still, deep in thought. Bosaler the steward of the palace comes and whispers: “Khan, the imperial edict of the assembly is ready. ”Ubashi Khan: “It is not the right time.” Bosaler: “Khan, we are running out of time! Our prince is being sent away!”Ubashi Khan: “Then…he shall leave.” Bosaler: “But…the queen, she…”Ubashi Khan: “What about the queen?”Bosaler: “A maid says, she lost her sleep for some days. Though she seems alright, she’s likely to…” Ubashi Khan: “To get mad, right? Ok, serve her well!” Bosaler: “Khan, maybe, she needs you the most at this point.”Ubashi Khan: “After a short period of silence. “ I want to see the master. ”Bosaler takes out his pocket watch and says: “Is it too late,Khan?”Ubashi Khan: “No, he’s always been waiting for my questions. ”

23.On the other side of the riverPrincess Bosnia is wandering in the moonlight on her horse, under the protection of a dozen of royal guards.Princess Bosnia: “It’s weird. He’s arrogant, but he makes people wonder. He’s sycophantic, but troublesome.”Constantine tentatively asks her: “ My honorable princess, aren’t you being fond of that Mongolian way of arrogance and rudeness?”Princess Bosnia smiles in silence. She points at a golden roof building with her whip.Princess Bosnia: “ Constantine, what is that house for? The one stands alone.”Constantine: “That is the Mongolian church. They believe in a god called Buddha.”Princess Bosnia: “What’s the difference between our God and theirs?”Constantine: “Totally different. Because of the doctrine of Bud-dhism, they repel collective action but advocate self-comprehen-sion of kindness and forgiveness.”Princess Bosnia: “I don’t understand. Avoid common action and be-lieve in kindness and forgiveness? How can these things forge such brave, strong and battlewise nation!” Constantine: “ My princess, this is an unresolved mystery.”Princess Bosnia“I would like to go into the house. ”Constantine smiles: “Princess, their churches are for men so no woman is allowed to enter. Especially at such quiet night.”Princess Bosnia giggles: “ Now I know, the best weapon to conquer them is woman, am I right?”Constantine looks uncertain: “ My princess, I am thinking…What you said must come from the most brilliant mind.”

Page 11: The Last Mongolian Army

24.Possession of Court Ubashi Khan: “Master, maybe I was overhasty.”Lama Zarsan : “ The instinct of the father will hand down to his son. You don’t have to blame yourself too much, as long as you know.”Ubashi Khan: “There is fog blocking my eyes, I can hardly see where the land of peace is.” The rolling beads.Lama Zarsan : “Khan,I , this old lama, will be leaving tomorrow.”Ubashi Khan is shocked: “Where are you going master? Why don’t you let me know even just a little about it? Such sudden departure, you will take my soul away!” Lama Zarsan: “Where your mind is stored, where your soul lays. Khan, now that you’ve already known your mission, no one will ever take your soul away. ”Ubashi Khan: “Will you be back one day?”Lama Zarsan: “ Coming is leaving, vice versa. Khan, without leav-ing, how can there be coming?”Ubashi Khan: “Master, where do I find a guide if you're not here?”Lama Zarsan: “Being afraid of nothing is the real wisdom, as well as being afraid of everything. Khan, you will do it well.”

25.Inside the interior room of Khan's PalaceThe queen looks depressed and haggard. There is that murderous look in her eyes: “This is the only way to keep my son here! ”Bosaler: “Your highness, I…I’m afraid…”Th queen: “You used to be my father’s slave. Who do you think it was that helped you to get your position? !”Bosaler drops to his knees: “Your highness…”

26.In Princess Bosnia’s bedroom of field headquartersThe princess seems excited, writing with her quill as she is dressed in a nightgown. Sometimes, she stands up and walks around. Voiceover: “…Your majesty the queen, inspired by you, I realized that there is that greed of a conqueror in me, which leads me to live up to your expectations! ….If…Ubashi Khan is not a mighty lion that can help you gnaw the countries of the world, he, at least is a violent tempered horse that carries some conquerors’ de-sire. For such horse, you may need to protect his wild nature. Once he lost his dauntlessness, all he can do will be pulling the ploughs on the land you conquered as if tamed. But, you, the great Queen Catherine, you are never in need of a docile horse…”

27.OutdoorConstantine is hovering. Finally, he makes up his mind to knock the door.

28.Indoor“Tap-tap.” Princess Bosnia smiles, reaching for the door.

Page 12: The Last Mongolian Army

Constantine kneels down with one knee and kisses her hand: “My beloved Princess, your servant Constantine Alexey Norwich, is al-ways ready to serve you!” The princess pulls away her hand and smiles again: “My respectable Constantine Alexey Norwich, I am immersed in the excitement of writing to our sacred queen. So, don’t destroy such mood. ”Constantine stands up with disappointment: “Your highness, I always understand you!” Princess Bosnia watches him go. The door is closed from the out-side.

29.Outside the residence of the protocol officerFirst rays of the morning sun appears. Bosaler looks around, knocking the door in haste. A cold sword is lying on his neck. Bosaler trembles as his legs lose balance. The royal guard lifts him from the ground.Constantine walks out of the door. Putting his hands on the frightened Bosaler, he shakes his head: “There are cowards even among Mongolians! Perhaps I have to rewrite the Mongolian history of conquering, and add some special analyses in it.”The royal guard: “Constantine Alexey Norwich, how will you execute him? It is obvious that scaring him will not lead to death.”Constantine: “Bing him in!”

30.Inside the roomBosaler stutters: “My..my master is Duke Abakov…our queen’s father, he…he is also a loyal man of her majesty the queen.”Constantine: “I was invited to the feast yesterday, did he say any-thing that matters?” Bosaler sensed the mildness in Constantine’s words, realizing what to say. “My master…is a pious believer of the Eastern Orthodox. He hates the pagans. The home of the pagans here is right in that temple. I…I’ve been watching that old lama. Ubashi Khan was talk-ing to him yesterday for quite a long time.”Constantine: “You call this…information? ”Bosaler: “No, I meant there maybe a strong connection between the old lama and Ubashi’s scheme. For the efflorescence of the Eastern Orthodox, that lama must be…” Constantine: “A sudden movement! Boom! God will never know!Bosaler: “Yes.” Constantine thinks about it for while. “Finally, you said something useful !”

31.In the room of the royal guardThe guard is looking into the mirror, dressing up his suit: “Con-stantine, should Princess Bosnia be informed?” Constantine replies: “Well, I guess no one here would get our princess involved in such dirty business. This place is filled with danger.”

Page 13: The Last Mongolian Army

32.In the campHundreds of Mongolian warriors are ready to go. Ubashi Khan walks out of the tent, fully armed.A chiliarch goes forward: “Khan, those menacing soldiers are head-ing for the temple! ”Khan vaults into the saddle, pulling his sword out and shouting: “Come with me! If lama is hurt, we will cut their princess into pieces!”

33.Outside the campOn the saddles of the horses, sit hundred of warriors with their machete swinging. They rush out the camp like a tide, and run deeply into the grassland. The dust blocks out the first glow before sun comes up…

34.In the templeA ray of morning light thrusts out through the clouds and shines on the golden-masked statue of Sakyamuni. The strong strikes on the door can’t even interrupt his inner peace and calm.

35. Near the gate of the templeA row of royal guards aims at the door with their guns. All of a sudden, they fire a volley of shots into the temple at the same time. The sawdust flies in the air.The royal guards kick the door open and are about to enter. Constantine yells: “Wait!” Following the frightened gaze of Constantine’s, they see many horses coming from somewhere far. The ground seems to be shaking.

36. The swords reflect the sunlight. The crew of horses come to-ward the glow of sun horizontally.

37. Near the gate of the templeConstantine and his fellows are surrounded, having not even a hairline crack to escape. Ubashi Khan stares at Constantine cold-bloodedly. The muscles of Constantine’s face tremble. There is still some smoke coming out of their muzzles.Hooves move restlessly…Machetes gleam.Constantine calms himself down and goes out of the circle which protects him. He puts his one hand on his chest and bows. Constantine: “My…reverent Khan, perhaps you received the same mes-sage. This place, must be protected.Ubashi Khan does not say a word with his eyes closed. The Hooves come closer to the shrinking troop of royal guards. The shooters’ arms are shaking. Constantine suddenly shouts out: “Oh, you crafty Mongolians! It was you who set the trap! We did not intend to enrage you!” Ubashi Khan looks at him sharply: “What—did you say?” Constantine waves his hands with fury: “Using tricks to frame us, Khan, this is not what you should do!”

Ubashi’s gaze skips him and stays on the spire of the temple. He speaks with low voice: “Go and take a look, see if our master is alright.” A few warriors jump off, stabbing the machete into the dirt.

39.Near the gate of the templeThe commander rushes out of the temple, pulling out his machete from the dirt and pointing it at Constantine: “Where is our master! ”Constantine shakes: “Trap, it is totally a trap!” He says. The horses get vehement. Those glinting machetes are swung above the warriors’ heads. The captain of the royal guards waves his gun and shouts: “Back up! Back up! Or I will shoot!”Mongolian warriors are waiting for Ubashi Khan’s command. The horses’ hooves start to move restlessly again as if getting ready for the order of the horse under Ubashi Khan…

He stares at a few royal guards who look relaxed and complacent: “You offended the holy Buddha. You must pay the price!” Princess Bosnia: “What do you want?”Ubashi Khan looks up and refuses to answer. The commander: “You should cut off one of your arms as a warning!” Princess Bosnia: “Khan, this is a punishment of extreme brutality!”The commander says as he pokes his machete into the earth: “You de-cide it yourself! Mongolians from Turehot never bargain!”Machete quivers near Constantine’s feet.He steps back astonished: “No…no!” He throws his helpless look to the captain of the royal guards. The captain puts his gun back. Then he yells: “For the sacred her majesty the queen, for the noble princess, I will do it!”He hurls himself forward and pulls the machete out from the ground. The prince is still copping…He suddenly stops——in front of him stands Lama Zarsan .Prince Asarai: “Master!”Lama Zarsan hands him a small box made of sheepskin: “Prince, I’m leaving, this is for you.” Prince Asarai supports his body with the machete stabbed into the ground to kneel down with one knee, taking over this small box. Lama Zarsan puts his hand on the prince’s head and then chants and prays for a little while. He raised him from his knees: “Prince, there are a few things I brought from Tibet in this box. They maybe needed when you leave your father.”Prince Asarai: “No! Master, my mother told me that, I don’t have to leave my father anymore!”Lama Zarsan shakes his head: “Prince, you have no choice, neither do your father. You must go to that strange place.”“Why?” He is shocked.Lama Zarsan: “Because you are the prince of Turehot, you lost the right to decide when you’re born.”Prince Asarai’s voice shakes: “Master! I want to be a hero!”.Lama Zarsan: “Get rid of the fear in you, you are the son of the hero of Turehot!” Tears fill his eyes: “Master, I believe you just like my father did!”

If you don’t, I will!” Bosaler drops to his knees. “Your highness, it’s not possible to get pass Khan! What are we gonna do after this?” He cries. The queen takes out a gun from beneath the table and yells hoarsely: “I don’t care about the future! Now, I want my son to stay! Stand up and follow me!”Bosaler shakes while picking himself up.As gate of the palace is open, Prince Asarai stands in the back-light.Bosaler: “Prince?”Prince Asarai points at Bosaler with his machete. “Ask my machete before hurting the master!”The queen cries: “Son, I am doing this for you! Only his death can irritate your father! Then you can stay with me!”Prince Asarai: “No, I can’t betray my father!”The queen asks with tears falling: “Son, are you willing to be their hostage!”Prince Asarai: “Mother, a prince of Turehot, can only choose to be a hero!”The queen’s whole body shakes, throwing away the gun in her hand. She stretches her arms out and cries: “Mongke Tengri! Why is my son cursed at such a young age!” Bosaler drops to his knees near the prince. “Prince, do you know that your mother suffered so much!”Prince Asarai puts his machete into the sheath and walks towards the queen with tears rolling in his eyes. The queen yells: “Get away! Ubashi Khan asks indifferently: “Who is the one that’s behind you?”Bosaler: “Your highness, please send me to Mongke Tengri!”Ubashi Khan pushes a bowl of wine: “Let him go.” A warrior brings it to him.Bosaler drinks with his mouth on the edge of the bowl, struggling to spurt a brume of wine over the fire. “By Mongke Tengri, my poor queen! I’m leaving one step ahead!” Ubashi Khan stands up and walks into the tent.A few warriors shoulder Bosaler and take him to the bonfire…

Page 17: The Last Mongolian Army

45.In the tentThe queen is staring blankly at nothing.Ubashi Khan furiously drops the bowl with milk tea on the table when he is just about to sip. The milk tea splashes. The queen: “They should have burnt me too!”Khan lowered his pitch and speaks raucously: “You do not deserve to be a queen! The good fortune of hundreds of thousands of people was merely destroyed by your selfishness, do you know that! ”The queen takes off her crown and starts to unbutton her gown.Ubashi Khan’s face is dark with rage. The queen stands up and throws her gown away: “I will abdicate and go to St.Petersburg with my son!”Ubashi Khan draws his sword from his waist all of a sudden. The queen walks out of the place, seeming as if that she doesn’t even care. The sword falls as the table with tea-things was cut in half.

46.Outside the tentRed light is on the white underclothes of the queen like it’s red-dened by blood.Osbar runs out of the crowd of nobles, half-kneels and looks up: “Queen?” The queen looks straightly at nothing: “You are the brother of Khan, so you are the first to know. I am no longer the queen of Turehot!”Osbar shouted with rage: “What? How can Khan treat you like this? I’ll go and ask him!”The queen doesn’t care. She walks to a warrior on horse. The warrior is fluttered and jumps off the horse. He kneels before her.The queen takes the halter and mounts on the horse. She rides the horse, and when passing a bonfire, she takes off her bracelet and throws it into the flame, riding off at full speed.

47.In the tentOsbar glares at Ubashi Khan in anger.Ubashi Khan says: “Osbar, you respect her, but was it for your own selfish reason? Does she deserve to be the mother of the country?”Osbar pulls out his sword and points it at Ubashi Khan. “My Khan brother, no matter how many excuses you have, you must promise me, that you will never get her abdicated!”Ubashi Khan is indifferently unmoved to his sword. Ubashi Khan shouted in a low voice: “Guards.”Two warriors rush in and take Osbar’s machete. Osbar is pressed down to the ground.Osbar struggles to make a sound: “Brother, you ashamed the kind queen. Come on! Punish me too!” Khan says: “Get him out of here!”Two warriors march Osbar across the tent.

Page 18: The Last Mongolian Army

The queen is organizing her clothes, putting them in a big wooden crate.Bicheeg is helping her silently.Alexander’s face is written with the word “anger”.Abakov stamps his foot and walks around: “Foolish, foolish! You ru-ined the renown of the family. Our reputation will nosedive among the nobles.”Bicheeg: “Abba, please don’t blame my sister, she also suffers.”Alexander sneers: “You are pretty suasive, huh? If Khan replaces the queen with you, we will have nothing to worry about!”Bicheeg is irritated: “Alexander, I know I like Khan, but that is my business!”Bicheeg walks out in anger.Alexander: “Sister, did you hear that? Bicheeg has some thoughts! If Khan would like to marry her, do you agree?”The queen acts as if she does not hear a thing. Looking at his son and daughters arguing, Abakov’s eyes goggle.

49.In the GardenBicheeg stands near a clove tree, splitting the flower petal by petal. Abakov walks to her and whispers with boldness: “Bicheeg, what your brother said is actually…kind of plausible. For our family”s repu-tation, I will go and see Khan!” Bicheeg turns around. Watching the fat body of her father, she wants to say something but she does not.

50.In the Tent of the CampAbakov smiles obsequiously: “Oh, my kind Khan, this is possibly a way! Nothing will ever change, I will ask the nobles not to make any more trouble, what do you think of this?”A bowl of milk tea is poured on his face.Abakov jumps up and runs out of the tent in hurry.

51.In Abakov’s Living room Abakov swears angrily while cleaning his face with a towel: “This madcap piece of shit! Can’t he remember who protected him?If it wasn't my whole family who believes in the Orthodox, the queen would dispatch her troops!”Alexander says with a sense of mystery. “Abba, don’t you worry, there is still a chance. Bicheeg is on her way by her own will.” Abakov was shocked and surprised: “Really?”

52.On the grass land along the riverbank, Bicheeg is galloping the horse.

53. In Khan's PalaceUbashi Khan and Princess Bosnia both sit with the positions of host and guest clearly shown.Constantine sends a map to Khan’s table: “My honorable Khan, this is where Prince Asarai lives in St.Petersburg.”

Page 19: The Last Mongolian Army

Ubashi Khan pushes the map away without even looking at it: “There is one more thing, the queen of Turehot, will follow the Prince.”Constantine is shocked. Staring at the princes with confusion, he does not know how to answer Khan.Princess Bosnia thinks for a while and smiles: “Well, this is prob-ably the best arrangement.”Ubashi Khan: “Fine then, this is it. Princess Bosnia, I have to go to the camp, so I shall not be eating with you during dinner.” Princess Bosnia runs her eyes over the fancy palace: “Khan, the great Khan’s palace is no better than a camp that shakes and crum-bles?”Ubashi Khan: “Yes, I like the smell of grass.” Ubashi Khan walks out without looking back.Princess Bosnia is taken back, staring at his figure as if think-ing about something.

54.In the CampBicheeg is on her knees quietly with anger.A clip-clop sound. Bicheeg shakes her body because of sudden in-tensity. She quickly picks up her wineskin, filling the cup with it. After swallowing it, she takes a breath to relieve.Ubashi Khan walks in and sits in the middle.Ubashi Khan: “Speak.”Bicheeg’s lips shake while tears coming out of her eyes.Ubashi Khan: “Tears are not allowed in my camp!”Bicheeg bites her lips: “Ok, I hide my tears!”However, she can’t help having them running across her face.Ubashi Khan’s tune turned a bit milder: “Fine, you are a woman, you are forgiven.”She indignantly sobs: “Khan, why would you humiliate me?”Ubashi Khan answers: “Oh?Bicheeg, I never humiliate a woman through my entire life!”Bicheeg continues: “You know that I love you, but why would you refuse?”Ubashi Khan looks up at that small patch of sky above the tent. “Bicheeg, maybe… what I rejected was Abakov’s family. Maybe..I don’t like a woman who does not wear Mongolian gown, and a woman who does not have that smell of grass on her, even more.”Bicheeg takes a sword on the table and stands up. The sharp edge of the knife slides on her dress. The parts of her fragmentized dress start falling…until her whole white body is exposed. The knife drops.Bicheeg says with crying-like voice: “Khan, you saw it, you saw what I can do for you! Am I going to be kicked out of your tent?”Ubashi Khan stands up quickly, hands her the gown that hangs on the wall: “This is your sister’s, put it on!”A satisfied smile appears on her face: “Is this your promise?”Ubashi Khan looks away.

Batu holds his whip tightly while bristling: “Bastard, he ashamed Mongolians!”Bayar runs in, knitting his eyebrows when looking at the pieces of statue.Batu gazes at him: “Hm?”Bayar says in low voice and hurry: “Abba, the living room is full of people. Some went to the woods.”Batu walks out in anger with whip in hands.Bayar squats down to carry the fragments in both hands. His face twisted as the pain tortures him:“Dotard, this is the masterpiece of the famous artist of St.Peters-burg!”

57.On the Clearing in the woodsA few torches burn in the hands of the warriors. The swaying fire shines on no less than ten fully armored guards, who look cold and heartless.Batu seems to be strong and manful as before, taking big strides to stand in the center.Batu: “You tell me!”Old nobleman A: “Sire, Khan is making Turehot a vassal of Russia. We do not agree!”Old nobleman B: “It is great humiliation for Mongloians to let the queen be the hostage!”Someone shouts out in the dark: “We do not want such a Khan!”People repeat what others say: “Yes, no way…Sire, please help this country!…”Batu: “Fine! You people here are all members of the assemblies of magnates.Tell me your what you are thinking!”Old nobleman A staggers and falls to his knees: “Batu Khan!”Batu steps back.Everyone kneels down: “Batu Khan!”Batu’s shaking arm goes up: “Did…did you plan this whole thing?”They continue: “Batu Khan!”The torches are lifted up high and the people are calling his name: “Batu Khan! Batu Khan!……”

58.In the Inner Chamber of Batu’s Official ResidenceBatu slumps down on the chair near the table with poor conscious-ness, looking a lot older than before.

Page 21: The Last Mongolian Army

Bayar comes to talk to him with evident enjoyment: “They acclaimed you Khan?” Batu murmurs: “This is planned in advance, I… I know. You are happy now?”Bayar appears merry: “Abba, you are with high reputation. They mean it!” Batu sneers: “I am old! They are targeted at you!”Bayer is becoming excited: “Abba, he is no better than me. I…I can also be a Khan!” Batu’s body starts to shake.Bayar asks anxiously: “Abba, are you good?”Batu points at a machete with jewelry decorations that hangs on the wall: “Bring..bring it to me.”Bayar takes the machete with excitement and kneels down in front of his father. His eyes are filled with the flame of expectation.Batu suddenly draws out the machete and then places it on his son’s neck.Bayar is scared: “A…Abba, what are you doing?”The edge of the knife cuts the surface of his skin where blood comes out.Bayar yells as the pain gets stronger: “Abba! Abba!”Batu: “Swear to Mongke Tengri, never betray him!”Bayar crys: “Abba, I swear, I will never betray Ubashi Khan!”The machete is away from his neck.Bayar picks up a white napkin to stop his blood. Bayar whimpers: “ Abba, you almost killed your own son!”Batu has his tears all over his face and touches his son’s head with his shanking hand: “Bayar, it is never easy to be a Khan, no fun will be found.”Bayar feels aggrieved: “Ok, then I will not be a Khan. But why would you do such a thing?”Batu:“Quickly, go secretly and tell Khan that those people are go-ing to rebel…”

59. In the light of night, Bayar climbs over the wall and falls hard from the top of it. After picking himself up, he runs with his hand on the neck, and staggers as if he is on cotton.

My sister is the queen, our families are closely connected!”Bayar gulps down his wine again: “Alright, I…I believe you!”

62.In the Inner Chamber of Abakov’s HouseBicheeg is combing and putting her makeup on in front of a mirror, keeping a ear to what his brother is saying. Abakov’s shivering hands help him dress himself up: “This will change our whole family’s destiny! I must go to see Princess Bosnia!”Alexander asks: “But…uh…what about Khan?”Abakov says: “Let me know what the princess says first. Coax Bayar, don’t let him leave.”Alexander takes a glance at Bicheeg: “That stupid passed out drunk.”Bicheeg’s body shakes. The comb slides down her hair all of a sud-den.Some long hairs clung to the comb in her shaking hand…

You are the su-pervisor of Turehot?”Then Princess Bosnia opens a leather case, taking a gilded paper out from it.After looking at it, Abakov takes a deep bow: “Dear special envoy of her majesty the queen, now I can rest my heart.” He walks backwards and leaves the place.

Page 23: The Last Mongolian Army

As he left, Constantine quickly gets back to the princess: “My no-ble princess, since when have you accepted the queen’s commission? How…am I not supposed to be the first to know?”Princess Bosnia smiles: “My beloved Constantine C Alexey Norwich, I sent my request the last time I wrote to the queen. And today, I am formally commissioned.” Constantine asks: “My princess, you’d rather stay here…a place full of heathens?”Princess Bosnia: “Isn’t it good? You should feel happy for me if I can tame a violent-tempered horse for our use!”Constantine is disappointed: “Oh, my princess, it is my job to take the prince under escort. I can not be around. That’s so much pain!”Princess Bosnia giggles: “My lovely Constantine, this is why I kept it from you!”

Page 24: The Last Mongolian Army

The warriors of the squad of guards stop him at the gate with their swords horizontally placed. The commander draws out his sword and chops the hitching post. The commander shouted by clenching his teeth: “Khan! The rebels are ready to take action! Are we waiting for them to come?”As the fires are set, the guards leave him a road.Ubashi Khan appears serious in front of the soldiers and generals. All the people are actively going forward and kneeling down with one knee: “Khan, give us the order!”Khan announced seriously: “All of you stay here, I am going my-self.”Khan gets on the horse.Everyone shouts: “No! We can’t let Khan be in danger yourself!”Ubashi Khan starts to laugh. Excitedly they go and pay respects to him: “Batu Khan, you are fi-nally here!” Batu pushes his son away. He struggles to stable his shaky body.Batu says with his shaky voice: “Do not call me Khan! There has al-ways been one Khan, him! My brothers that I trust the most, my children, he is right, we Mongolians shouldn't be fighting against our own people anymore! I am too old, that my legs are worn. I can’t lead you and fight with you anymore. So, let him lead all of us, and seek for the only peace that’s left!”There are still leaders calling “Batu Khan”.Batu stops them by waving his hands: “No more, I know, your calling “Khan” is all fake. Whom you really needed, is him!”He kneads his son’s shoulders with his fingers. Bayar crumples down onto the ground. Batu: “ Look, my poor son is so weak. Can he burden all these?I know, I know, you all want a puppet, to satisfy the greed of each family!” Bayar cries: “Let go of me! I just wanted to live a happy life, I never wanted to be a Khan!”Batu: “Mongke Tengri has given us the warning. The grasslands near Volga is no longer heaven! The lonely lion is being hunted by a strong hunter. What can we get from a dead lion? My brothers and children, think about it!” Old nobleman A’s machete in his hand hangs down.Others are starting to put their machetes back.A lead of the rebel army shoulders his way to the front by waving his machete and gets to Ubashi Khan: “Don’t listen to this old cow-ard’s bullshit! Our queen doubts that, she thinks that he is hatching an evil plan!”Princess Bosnia: “Constantine Alexy Norwich, it is very common for our queen to suspect a heathen. Still, I hope you don’t dramatize it.” Constantine: “You shouldn’t trust that sly Mongolian!”Princess Bosnia: “It is beyond argument that, according to Her Majesty the Queen’s orders, I should suspect him, but my job is to
