What was intended to be a mass pro-test action of 3 000 people turned in-to a damp squib last week Friday

when less than 100 Joe Slovo Park residentstook to the streets.

Those who did turn up did their best tovoice their concerns about a lack of housingin the township.

A few bad apples did, however, manage todisrupt law and order in the morning whenthey threatened others from going to workand burnt tyres in the streets.

This resulted in Freedom and DemocracyRoad as well as Printers Way being closedfor a while.

Besides the few who were forbidden to goto work, the worst knock-on effect was traf-fic along Koeberg Road and RacecourseRoad.

The legal march started at 10:00 and pro-ceeded along Koeberg until the singing anddancing minority turned left into Race-course towards the City Council Adminis-trative Block opposite Paddocks ShoppingCentre.

management was also stationed in Milner-ton from the early morning.

Local police spokesperson W/O DaphneO’Reilly confirmed with TygerBurger thatthere were no injuries reported and that theday proceeded relatively peacefully.

During the march the protesters held post-ers aloft to clarify some of their qualms –“We demand better housing” and “Red cardfor Joy”.

The “Joy” that protesters were referringto is ward councillor Joy McCarthy who hasbeen trying her best to maintain peace in JoeSlovo Park and regularly responds to resi-

dents’ growing complaints in the area.When she was asked how she feels about

the poster directed at her she responded: “Itdisappoints me, knowing what I’m trying todo for the community and that I will still con-tinue doing for the community. I take itwhere it comes from – it’s election time, it’ssilly season.”

Considering the number of ANC T-shirtson show during the protest it is hardly sur-prising that McCarthy says the protest wasmostly electioneering.

She says the issue of housing has been along-standing problem.

“It’s a catch-22 really. Some have occupiedevery square inch of available land. Landthat is intended for mixed-use development.So we can’t build as long as they are occupy-ing the land.”

Mixed­useThe City of Cape Town already has two in-

terdicts against the illegal occupiers, but todate they still don’t budge.

The mixed-use development plan is tobuild three-storey flats of which the residen-tial top two floors are located above commer-cial.

The protest action, originally intended tobe 3 000-strong, decreased to 1 000 when theapplication was lodged with the city.

The broader community didn’t know whatto expect after the Du Noon protests lastyear, when thousands of people marcheddown Koeberg Road.

McCarthy, who keeps her ear to theground, knew the recent protest would bemore manageable.

“The community of Joe Slovo are a lot qui-eter and a lot calmer than the community ofDu Noon. I spoke to community leaders af-terwards and it is clear that most residentsare fed up with this nonsense. Some say thatothers can march, as long as they are al-lowed to go to work,” she concludes.

A parrot had to be given oxygen on Sundaywhen two veldt fires broke out in TableView.Thiswas just one of thememorable scenes

as firefighters, ably assisted by the localneighbourhood watch, combated the fires.With the temperature soaring and the

wind howling, the risk of the fires causingmayhem was a real threat, but good team-work ensured that both were extinguishedby 23:00.The first broke out just behind Checkers

Sandown and the second in the vlei nearGillRoad.The latter happened just behind McPher-

son’s Restaurant and the adjacent nursery

and it was herewhere the parrotwas treatedfor smoke inhalation.Says Table View Neighbourhood Watch

(TVNW) spokesperson, Gemma Redeling-huys: “Apparently the parrot was coughing.Don’t askmewhat a coughing parrot soundslike!”She continues: “The first fire was brought

under control due to a swift response fromthe Fire & Rescue Teams, however the firein the vlei spread quickly and presentedmore of a challenge. Our members’ swift ac-tion in assisting the police on scene to closeroads leading to the vlei and directing traf-fic, made a huge impact on the success of theday.”Many of TVNW’s remarkable Face-book friends heeded the call for donations ofwater or food and the 200 firefighterscouldn’t ask for more.

“It was an incredible response,” confirmsRedelinghuys.“We have asked for donationsbefore with a fire last year, but it was noth-ing like this. After we fed 200 firefighters wesent three bakkie-loads of food to Silver-stream, where they had to go fight anotherfire.”Members also helped bandage the hands

of firefighters who received cuts while try-ing to hack through the dense vlei.She continues: “There were multiple

houses that were threatened but a quick re-sponse from residents after a call to douseroofs and gardens, assisted in keeping theflames at bay. Fire and Rescue Servicesasked TVNW to remind residents to pleaseremember to cleanout their gutters of debrisas even just a few sparks can set debrisalight.”

Last week was one to forget for poacherswhen a large abalone bust in Atlantis wasfollowed by another in Melkbosstrand.

In Atlantis the local police and the Cityof Cape Town’s Metro police joined forcesand saw just over 18 500 abalone confiscatedwhile in Melkbosstrand the local neigh-bourhood watch saw to it that 1 174 were re-covered.

Metro police chief Wayne le Roux elabo-rates on the first incident that happenedlast week Tuesday: “The police received atip-off about an abalone processing plant inAtlantis. We assisted them in searching thepremises – a noodle factory in Neil HareRoad. On searching a back room they foundan abalone drying facility.”

The officers confiscated abalone with anestimated value ofR1,6million andarrestedfive suspects.

“Wewould like to commend themembersof the public who assist us in the fightagainst crime. Many of our breakthroughsare the result of tip-offs fromconcerned citi-zens. Abalone poaching is a big problem inSouth Africa and its link with the drugtrade is alsowell-documented,which iswhythis operation is so significant,” he con-cludes.

That sameevening the anti-poachingunit(APU) in Melkbosstrand and the ProtectedSpecies Detection K-9 unit came across fivepoachers who were diving for abalone.

Neighbourhood Watch chairperson, An-dré van der Merwe, elaborates: “The APUmembers saw five suspected poachers go-ing into the water.

“Just a couple of hours later they cameout and hid the poached abalone in thedunes.

“They left the abalone there for someoneto come pick it up, but we contacted the lo-cal police who then confiscated it.”

Noarrestsweremade, butVanderMerwesays one of the most important ways of

fighting this crime is to ensure the abalonewasn’t collected.

“First prize is, of course, if we can stoppoachers from entering the water, sinceonce abalone have been removed it is virtu-ally impossible to rehabilitate these. Abalo-ne are very sensitive animals,” he contin-ues.

The APU uses various techniques and hi-tech equipment tokeeppoaching in theareadown to a minimum.

“Ek het in die destydse Tiervlei groot-geword, wat vandag Parowvalleiis, so ek is ’n ou Bellvilliet,” sê Let-

tie Visser, die nuwe hoof van Ramot.Ramot is ’n behandelingsentrum vir ver-

slaafdes in Oosterzee, Parow.Na haar skoolopleiding het Visser ’n mees-

tersgraad in maatskaplike werk aan die Uni-versiteit Stellenbosch behaal. Sedert 1978het sy in Bellville gewerk. “Dis nou buitendie afgelope vier en ’n half jaar, wat ek diehoof van die kinderhuis op Robertson was,”sê sy.

“Van die kinderhuis na Ramot was ’n reu-se-sprong,” sê sy. Visser is die eerste vrouli-ke hoof in die 50 jaar van dié gerekende sen-trum se bestaan.

In haar 35 jaar lange loopbaan het sy ’nbreë spektrum van maatskaplike werk ge-doen. Sy het lank vir Famsa gewerk en hetonder meer ook hofondersoeke vir die staatgedoen.

“Ek is verskriklik opgewonde oor my nu-we werk. Dit is ’n oulike personeel en passie-volle mense,” sê sy.

Ramot het begin as ’n sentrum vir die re-habilitasie van alkoholmisbruik, maar metdie jare heen het dit begin werk met mensewat ook ander verslawings het. Daarom, sêsy, is dit ’n plek wat voortdurend veranderen uitdagings bied.

Ramot is onlangs gelisensieer as ’n nie-akute hospitaaleenheid met 10 beddens virdetoksifikasie.

“Dit is duur om hierdie sentrum te bedryf.

Ons moet ’n span professionele mense hêwat kan toetree as dit nodig is, maar onswerk met mediese fondse en kry ook ’nstaatsubsidie om ongeveer 100 staatspa-siënte per jaar te behandel,” sê sy.

“Een van die groot uitdagings is dié pa-siënte wat nie kwalifiseer vir staatsubsi-dies nie en ook nie mediese fondse het nie.Vir hulle is daar bandsubsidie, waar hullegedeeltelik gesubsidieer kan word.”

“Een van Ramot se oogmerke in 2014 isom mense met verslawingsprobleme werk-lik te bemagtig op die pad na herstel.

“’n Stigma kleef steeds aan die siekte vanverslawing. Tog is begrip en geld nodig ommense nie net veilig te laat onttrek vanmiddels nie, maar ook toe te rus met dienodige lewensvaardighede wat hulle sal te-rugplaas in hul gesinne en werksplekke,ten einde ’n voordelige en bemagtigde uit-koms te bewerkstellig vir almal.

“Ramot is ook deurgaans besorg oor syoudpasiënte en wil hernude aandag wy aandie nasorg van hierdie individue en hul ge-sinne. Georganiseerde staproetes, asookdie gewilde nasorgaande op Donderdae,word weer eens beplan om onderlinge on-dersteuning te bevorder in die stryd om so-berheid te handhaaf.”

Visser sê sy sal in die toekoms graag wilsien dat Ramot-personeel help met oplei-ding. “Ramot het ’n lang geskiedenis vanalkoholmisbruik. Ons sit met baie kundig-heid hier. Ons personeel is belese en ervarena baie jare hier. Pasiënte benut die behan-deling en ons kry goeie terugvoer.”

Middelmisbruik is oral, sê sy. “Daar isnie ’n huishouding, familie of vriende-

kring wat nie in ’n mindere of meerdere matedeur verslawing geraak word nie en ek dinkdit word erger. Die eise van die lewe is niemaklik nie.

The “who”, “where” and “when” iseasy.The challenge is the “how”, but it

can be achieved if one heard the “why”.With the support of Spice4Life.co.za, the

founder of a Non-Profit Organisation(NPO), Tembile Nyoka, is creatingwaves ofchange in Du Noon.More and more people in Du Noon are

knocking on the door of Nculundu Acade-my of Learning and asking Nyoka for com-puter literacy training.With a few donated computers and heaps

of motivation, he uses the local communitycentre as his temporary base and teachesabout 60 people to market themselves on-line.But how can he do this with antique com-

puters, an erratic venue, severely limitedfunding and a day job?Both Nyoka and his biggest supporter,

CEO of Spice4Life.co.za, Michelle Kore-vaar, have an unwavering belief in hisNPO.They also have the “why” to see it blos-

som.Heelaborates: “I grewupwithout parents

aroundme, so I had to be my father andmymother from an early stage. Now to see peo-ple standing at the robots and trying to getjobs is difficult. Someof themare starving...So I thought to myself what could I do tochange the lives of others...?”While Korevaar listens to his story tears

well up in her eyes.She explains: “I also had a time inmy life

where I was on my knees. And it grows em-pathy. There are people who care, but theyjust don’t know how to make a difference.Being quiet is in fact being a victim. It’s likesaying to the world that we don’t have a so-lution.“Having been in that space, rolling up

and being silent doesn’t make any sense toanybody. We all have a voice and we mustdo what we can right now!”If good deeds could feed off words alone,

then Nyoka and Korevaar’s statementswould see the whole of Du Noon on the in-ternet in no time.Unfortunately there will be perils along

the way.Nyoka first came to the conclusion that

he had to help people around him in 2011,but getting his NPO registered just aftersome of his possessions were repossessedby the banks when he lost his job madethings almost impossible.He moved to Johannesburg to get his

NPO started and after he returned a hand-ful of computers were sponsored to him bya well-wisher.He got permission to use the community

centre in DuNoon, but before long the harddrives of seven computerswere stolen. Thisleft him with just four.Nyoka, having studied to become a tech-

nician, fixed these computers himself, butto datenoneof themhasan internet connec-tion.This essentially means he takes learners

to internet cafes and pays for their skills ac-quisition by the hour.He asked a basic fee of R50 permonth last

year, but the learners could not pay, so nowNyoka does it for free.When this expense is added to the money

it cost for him to become qualified to starttheNPOandsetting it up, thebiggerpictureis clearer.The Metro paramedic Nyoka is running

at a tremendous loss just in order to helpa few around him.Korevaar elaborates a bit on her compa-

AproposedMyCiTi feeder bus system inEdgemead andBothasig is beingmodi-fied and finalised for approval soon.

This is according to Brett Herron, mayoralcommittee member of transport.“A feeder system is a smaller public trans-

port vehicle collecting passengers in a spe-cific area and transporting them to a collec-tion point from where they interchange tolarger vehicles on dedicated lanes, referredto as a trunk bus services or the passengerrail system,” explains James Vos, chairper-son of the subcouncil, whohas beenmotivat-ing such a system in this area.According toVos, engineers are busywith

journey runs on the proposed feeder bus inroutes in Edgemead and Bothasig to stream-line this proposal.“Work on the construction of the support

infrastructure will begin later this year,once the main MyCiTi bus routes into Cen-tury City and Montague Gardens are com-pleted. The service should commence opera-tion by November 2015,” says Herron.

TrunkIn addition to the Edgemead and Bothasig

routes, the committee is planning a route toserve theRichwood andBurgundyEstate ar-ea. Trunk routes to the CBD and Table Vieware also being planned.A broad network of routes that will con-

nect Bothasig and Edgemeadwith other are-

with the construction of Bus Rapid Transit(BRT) stations at Century City will providethe same level of traffic relief to the Bos-mansdam Road and Montague Drive inter-section based on a conservative modal shiftof 10 %. The study was done by transport de-partment officials anddeemed tobeaccurateand acceptable in terms of its recommenda-tions subject to certain conditions,” he says.The study also recommends improve-

“Wait.” This is what Nico Loubser says hewas told by the secretary of the TygerbergAnimal Hospital (TAH) in Bellville whenhe brought in his sick dog to their consul-tancy late last year.

Amiga, Nico’s seven-year-old Rottweil-er, eventually died at the facility. Nico al-leges she died in the waiting room – whilethe secretary was busy making holidayplans over the phone.

“On Saturday (21 December) my lovingRottie, Amiga, died of bloat,” Nico said atthe time on Facebook.

He toldTygerBurger that he noticed howhis dog was panting heavily at around18:00, at which time he phoned the TAH. Hewas told to bring Amiga in immediately,Nico says.

“Joined by a friend we rushed her thereonly to be told that there were people be-fore us and paperwork to be done. Explain-ing that my dog was unable to walk, haddifficulty breathing and was dying, had noeffect on the receptionist,” he alleges.

“How on earth could she not realise Ami-ga was in serious trouble? Why else wouldit be necessary for two adults to carry adog?” Nico wanted to know.

“She even answered a call from herfriend, stopped everything she was busywith, and chatted about holiday celebra-tions. I respect the fact that other peoplewere there beforeme, but their animals didnot have life-threatening conditions,”Nicosays.

“After 30 minutes she told us: ‘Bring inthe Rottweiler.’ ”

Nico says Amiga’s condition weakenedin the waiting room.

“We begged the secretary to please calla vet. All I wanted at that stage was for mydog to be put to sleep. (The secretary) justsaid we must wait, because they only hadone vet on duty,” he said.

“I would have taken Amiga to anotherhospital. Tragically, Amiga died in thewaiting room, where she crawled under-neath a bench.”

John Adam, partner at the TAH Bel-lville, tells a different story: “We watchedthe CCTV footage.”

Adam said Nico walked about for a bitafter coming in with the dog, and then onlymade his way to An Rademan’s desk. Sheis the receptionist who was on duty.

“(Rademan) ...took the dog directly intothe consultancy, where the doctor on dutysaid the dog was busy dying,” Adam said.

“We only charged for the cremation, notthe consultation...”

Anofficial complainthasbeen sent to theVeterinary Council of South Africa, and af-ter the TAH Bellville’s response is re-turned to the complainant, a screeningcommittee will take over to investigate.

Edgemead band, Llevado, is hoping for bigthings this year.

Top on their to-do list are plans to recordtheir first album and music video, but theyalsowant to push themselves in the local fes-tival scene, with an eye on getting bookedto play as many festivals as possible.TygerBurger last spoke to theband in 2010,

when theyhad just changed their name fromEntrenched.

Since then, they have been hard at workperfecting their songwriting skills, workingon new material and their overall sound.

This is according to Justin Davie, theband’s frontman.

He is joined in the band by SheldonBredenkamp on drums, Noel Krieger onrhythm guitar and Christopher Wilson onbass.

The band was formed when Justin, Noeland Sheldon met in high school.

“We all actually took music in highschool,” Sheldon explains, adding: “But wedidn’t know what we played.”

“I think I only knew you played guitarwhen I saw you on stage for the first time,”he says, talking to Justin.

When the two discovered they played dif-

ferent instruments, they started jamming to-gether.

“Noel just decided he wanted to get in onthe action as well,” Sheldon goes on, addingthat they were later joined by Chris.

Deciding on a band name wasn’t as easyas forming the band. While they started asEntrenched, they were also called FindingHarm for a brief stint before deciding on Lle-vado, a Spanish word.

“Looking for a band name was reallyhard,” Justin says, adding: “We even askedour parents.”

“We were sitting around a table having afew beers with Sheldon’s mom and she wason the internet and she checked theword lle-vado,” he goes on.

Justin describes Llevado’s music as com-mercial rock, while Sheldon adds “light” asan adjective, although they have been com-pared with Matchbox 20 and John Meyer.

Llevadowill perform this Saturday (8 Feb-ruary), at the Sound Studio in Milnerton.“It’s a bring and braai, so it’s going to be le-kker chilled,” Justin says. Dit is weer tyd vir die MTBS! Dié groot-ste interskole-atletiekbyeenkoms indie land, geborg deurDie Burger, vind

Vrydag vir die 20ste keer in die Bellville-sta-dion plaas.Daar moet weer rekenskap gegee word

van weke en maande se harde oefening – open van die baan.Hierdie byeenkoms is ’n absolutemóét om
