It is just two more weeks to go until the sec-ond annual 5km Volkswagen Fun Run of-fers participants the chance to run throughthe Volkswagen factory.Volkswagen Group South Africa’s (VWSA)

PeoplePavilionwill host its second fun run onSaturday, 21 May. Last year’s inaugural raceattracted nearly 1 000 runners including the2016 Hannover Marathon winner and RioOlympics medal hopeful, Lusapho April who

lion investment into this facility is certainlypaying off and is giving our employees world-class biokinetics care, affordable gym as wellas a place tomeet and socialise,” said ThomasSchaefer, Chairman and Managing Directorof Volkswagen Group South Africa.The entry fee for the race is R20 per person

An irate resident of Uitenhage threatensto drive all the unattended cattle roamingthe suburbs and highway to the Metro’smunicipal offices.

Explaining his intention, Dave McCle-land from the Garden Town Initiativesaid, fatal accidents involving unattendedcattle are on the increase.

“It is like an invasion to ratepayers en-vironments. Who pays for the accidental

damage and loss of expensive shrubberythat these animals are causing in thetown?” asked McCleland.

“No notice seems to be taken of the com-plaints registered. How can one bakkieand a trailer handle all the roaming ani-mals in just about the whole Metro.

“I decided to organise a posse and drivethe loose cattle through town and takethem down to the municipal buildingsduring peak hours and see what they haveto say … any takers folks … the more themerrier,” said McCleland.

Every entrant running in Saturday’s SPARWomen’s Challenge will bring a dream toprovide around-the-clock care for terminal-ly ill children one step closer to reality.

One of the event’s two beneficiaries,Northwood Children’s Hospice (NCH) inMount Croix, was founded in 2010 to providesupport, care and information for their littlepatients and their families.

“We see the care that we give as a ‘kiss inthe pocket’ for children to carry as long asthey need it,” said centre director andfounder Maureen Lamb.

It currently is a day centre, but are fund-raising tirelessly to expand the operation in-to a full-time one, with a team of medical pro-fessionals on hand to offer both medicalskills and palliative care.

She said proceeds from the Women’s Chal-lenge would contribute to the centre’s BrickChallenge, which drives fundraising for thebuilding of three patient wings needed forthe little patients who need to stay and restonsite.

“The gifts we receive from the work we docannot be measured in human terms. How-

ever, the love and expressions of support wereceive from the community always leaves uswith warmth in our hearts.”

The Association for Persons with PhysicalDisabilities (APD) in Nelson Mandela Bay isthe second beneficiary. SPAR Eastern Capemarketing director Abri Swart said they wereproud to be associated with worthy causessuch as NCH and APD.

“We like the fact that our participants feela sense of accomplishment in knowing thatthe race has assisted us in giving back to thecommunity.”

Kayla, van die Moeggesukkel-nedersetting,het verlede week op Woensdag vermis geraaktoe haar ma haar gevra het om vir haar baba-boetie ’n doek by ’n nabygeleë winkel te gaankoop. Haar lyk is Sondagaand in ’n opslaan-huis aan die rand van Moeggesukkel gekry.

“Die polisie het aan ons gesê die vermeende

“Die ‘plek’ is ongesond. Dit is al die hoe-veelste moord wat die afgelope tyd hier ge-pleeg is,” het Jonathan Kuka (23), ’n inwonervan Moeggesukkel, gesê.

Nog ’n inwoner, Denzel Matthews (22), hetgesê hy voel baie sleg oor Kayla se dood. “Onsalmal het haar geken. Sy het dit nie verdiennie. Ek is ook bitter ontevrede oor die mis-daad wat so hoogty vier in dié plakkers-kamp.”

By die laerskool in Rosedale, Uitenhage,waar Kayla ’n gr. 6-leerling was, het leerlingeDinsdagoggend gehoor van haar dood.

Larry de la Harpe, hoof van DalrosePrimêre Skool, het gesê hulle is diep bedroefoor Kayla se “onnodige” dood.

“Ons is kwaad en gegrief. Sy was ’n onskul-dige kind en haar hele lewe het voor haar gelê.Sy het dit nie verdien nie. Ons gaan sekermaak dat die hele skool berading ontvang,”het De la Harpe gesê.

Kayla se klasonderwyser, Vernon Miles,het haar as ’n stil en teruggetrokke kind be-stempel.

“Ek het nog [verlede] Dinsdag van haar ’nvoorbeeld gemaak in die klas en gevra of dieander nie maar soos sy kan wees nie. Haardood is ’n groot skok. Ek het nie woorde nie,”het ’n hartseer Miles gesê.

Die leerder van HTS Daniel Pienaar het inDesember die Kowie Riviermyl geswem en ‘nvierde posisie in sy ouderdomsgroep behaal.Daarna het hy die Spar Riviermyl (vir die vierdekeer) geswem en ’n algehele 27ste plek behaal.

Met sy deelname aan die Bell Bouy oopwater-swem was hy die jongste deelnemer en enigsteswemmer van Uitenhage. Marais het hier vierdegekom in die ouderdomsgroep waarin hy geswemhet.

Marais het onlangs aan die Nasionale Oop-waterkampioenskappe in Grabouw deelgeneem.Sy tyd van 45 minute was gemaklik binne diekwalifiserende tyd, maar hy was teleurgesteldaangesien hy die afstand verlede jaar 2 minutevinniger voltooi het.

Daniel Pienaar is nietemin trots op Marais,aangesien meeste van die deelnemers se tyestadiger was. Die dam se watervlak was aansien-lik laer as in 2015 en motorbote het ook die waterredelik onstuimig gelaat. (-Heilie Combrinck)

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’sfuel-efficient “Eco-Car” – which has been de-signed to travel nearly 300km on just one litreof fuel, was on display at the recently held-Knysna Motor Show.

NMMU’s display, themed “advanced mobil-ity”, showcased the Eco-Car – the fruits of aglobal student project linked with Shell’s Eco-Marathon events – as well as the projects thatfall under the national uYilo e-Mobility Tech-nology Innovation Programme, which is host-ed by NMMU.

The Eco-Car project, driven by Mechanical,Electrical Engineering and Mechatronics stu-dents, last year saw the five-member team de-signing and manufacturing a fully carboncomposite prototype vehicle, which partici-pated in the African leg of the Shell Eco-Mara-thon, in Pretoria in October.

“The objective of the Eco-Car project is tochallenge students to manufacture an ultra-lightweight car to maximise fuel efficiency

and determine how far the vehicle can travelon a litre of fuel,” said NMMU MechanicalEngineering lecturer Clive Hands.

A huge feather in the team’s cap, was aninvitation to the flagship Shell Eco-Marathonevent in London in June this year.

However Hands said the team had not yetbeen able to raise the R600 000 it would needto get there.

Should they participate, they will competein the prototype class (geared for perform-ance, rather than passenger comfort) wherea conventional petrol engine has been modi-fied to accept a programmable fuel injectionunit to minimize fuel usage.

“The Eco-Car is also fitted with speciallydesigned Michelin tyres with a rolling resist-ance 10 times better than conventional tyr-es,” said Hands.

The Shell Eco-Marathon is an establishedevent worldwide with competitions in theAmericas, Asia, Europe and Africa.
