Message from the Director

Dear Friends,

Warm Greetings to the entire Vidya & Child family – staff & vendors, volunteers & partners, donors

& associates and all our well-wishers.

I am pleased to place before you an overview of Vidya & Child’s growth and achievements of the

past year through this Annual Report for 2014 - 2015.

All through our journey of 17 years, we have endeavoured to make a difference in the lives of all

those we have been associated with - our community, the children, the staff, our vendors, donors

and associates. Taking successive small steps, we have stayed together and worked together

towards a common cause, drawing support, encouragement and synergy from each other.

The children are the reason for our existence, and their growth as responsible individuals of the

community, the country, and the world at large, is our collective responsibility. It is with this thought

and belief that we have been working and would continue our work for years to come.

Vidya & Child has grown over the years facing many challenges, making renewed efforts, and

learning from our successes and shortcomings. Our children, their highs and lows, have all been

ours to embrace and to learn from.

Today, we cater to over 1600 children across 1000 families spread across 6 communities,

supported by a staff of over 130 dedicated people. We also have amongst us some children who

have completed Class XII and have chosen to work with Vidya & Child while pursuing part-time

graduation courses. Over 60 children have completed Class XII and are continuing graduation and

higher studies across different streams ranging from Engineering, Hotel Management and

Architecture to Retail and Business Administration. Many are pursuing professional or vocational

courses along with part-time jobs, while supporting their families financially.

-3-

Page 4: V&c annual report 2014 15

Message from the Director….contd. A child’s choice of a full-time or a part-time course or job is dependent on various factors (some of

them beyond our scope to address). What gives us comfort is the fact that all children are pursuing

what they really wanted to do and have taken informed decisions, keeping in mind their commitment

towards their families. Despite various pressures, they have neither given up nor got swayed, but

have firmly held on to their values.

For a child to complete education and acquire a skill in a chosen field, a minimum of 12-15 years of

perseverance is imperative. This requires commitment from all stakeholders – Vidya & Child,

parents, donors, friends, and well-wishers. This support is essential for a child to avail the benefits of

the education system that exists today. There are children who have been with us for almost 12 to

14 years and we have been fortunate to have seen them through their formative years. Through

this process, we have learnt and continue to learn with every batch passing out of Vidya & Child.

The major area of focus in the year 2014-15 has been the strengthening of the organization further

across three broad areas - consolidation of internal processes of all Vidya & Child programmes;

building capacities across the organization, and building a connect with all employees and staff

towards a common vision and the organizational goal.

The year also saw us addressing and brainstorming Vidya & Child’s role in education in the

government space, keeping in mind our tie-up with our partner Tech Mahindra Foundation. Under

this PPP (Public-Private Partnership) model, we are working with an East Delhi Municipal

Corporation School – Bal Balika Pratibha Vidyalaya, A Block, Dilshad Garden, New Delhi - to

improve upon the quality of education imparted to children through academic and community

interventions.

Team Vidya & Child is ever so grateful to all those who have believed in us and in our work. It is this

belief that gives us the renewed vigour and motivation to carry on with our work.

Warm regards, Supriya Akhaury

OUR JOURNEY

BACKGROUND & GROWTH With its inception seventeen years ago in 1998, Vidya & Child embarked upon its journey with five-year

old Tumpa as the first child. Today, she is a confident girl pursuing graduation in Fine Arts from New

Delhi. Vidya & Child remains committed to diligently follow a process-driven, child-centric approach,

bringing about numerous success stories from amongst underprivileged children belonging to the

marginalised sections of the society.

Our children are pursuing varied courses like CA; Engineering from NIT ( Trichy and Rourkela ); Hotel

Management; Event Management, Business Administration; Cosmetology from VLCC Institute; 3D

Animation; GNIIT from NIIT, Architecture and many more. We also have amongst us several children

who are pursuing their chosen fields along with a job in order to support their families. In addition to

academic achievers, some children have also trained to become excellent tabla players and Kathak

dancers through our Arts & Performing Arts Programme.

With the aim of making a difference in the lives of underprivileged children, Vidya & Child continues to

support children who belong to socio-economically marginalized sections of the society. Majority of them

have parents who are illiterate/semi-literate and work as domestic servants, industrial workers, rickshaw-

pullers, street vendors, plumbers and carpenters.

It has been our constant endeavour to provide education, encouragement and unstinting support to more

and more such sections of the society. Today, we work across 6 different communities through our

various centres, with a staff of over 130 people reaching out to more than 1600 children and working

tirelessly towards providing a creative learning environment for the holistic development of the children.

It was a moment of honour for Vidya & Child when we received further recognition and appreciation

through the Arise Lab School Project which commenced in 2013-14. Under this project, we are working

with an EDMC (East Delhi Municipal Corporation) School in technical partnership with Tech Mahindra

Foundation. As part of the PPP model, Vidya & Child feels privileged to replicate its work in the

Government School and reach out to about 200 children belonging to the underprivileged communities

of Dilshad Garden, Tahirpur, Nandnagri, Seemapuri etc. in East Delhi.

Vidya & Child believes in working from

within the community. All our project centers

are located in the basti or village from where

we work. This helps us stay connected with

the people we work for— the children, their

parents and their families as well as their

neighborhood.

It also allows us to understand and

appreciate the hardships faced by these

families. Currently working with over 1600

children across 6 locations, we have

mainstreamed over 320 children and over

60 children have finished Class XII and are

pursuing higher studies and/or working.

The Gupta Siblings Versatile, hardworking and enthusiastic, the Gupta siblings are focused towards the path to education. Financial constraints, family issues and other obstacles have not deterred their endeavors. They belong to a small village in Uttar Pradesh. Head of the family, Shri Rajender Gupta, earns his livelihood by working as a Caddy at Noida Golf Course. His wife supplements the family income by working in agricultural fields in their native village. They have three sons and one daughter. With the help of academic and mentoring support received from Vidya & Child, the eldest child, Srichand went on to complete B.A. and now works as a Golf Coach in Pathways International School, Greater Noida. Younger to him, Devishankar, is currently pursuing Hotel Management from IHM, Lucknow. Ramashankar, the third sibling is studying in class XI with Commerce as his stream from Hope Hall Foundation School, Delhi and is part of our Foundation Programme. Their sister, Gauri, is pursuing Senior Secondary through the NIOS Support Programme of Vidya & Child. She is also enrolled in a Diploma in Beauty Culture from Lal Bahadur Shastri Training Institute, Noida . Under the Arts & Performing Arts Programme of Vidya & Child, both Devi Shankar and Ramashankar trained in Tabla and are today excellent Tabla players. The Prajapati Family

Prajapati siblings have exhibited tremendous commitment and hard work in pursuing their dreams. Overcoming numerous challenges along the way, they have set forth an example for others to follow. The family hails from village Chatterpura, Bansur district in Rajasthan. They are presently living in Harijan Basti, Sector 37, Noida in Uttar Pradesh. Head of the family, Shri Richpal Singh, runs a tea shop and a dhaba. His wife also assists him in the shop.

Eldest child, Sonu, is doing B.Sc. from IGNOU & is also pursing a Hardware & Networking Course from GNIIT. Younger to Sonu is Tina. Tina completed Class XII with above 85% and is in the final year of B.Com (Hons.) from Deshbandu College, Delhi. Youngest amongst their three children is Monu, who is a part of our Foundation Programme and is currently pursuing Class XI (Science Stream) from Hope Hall Foundation School. He has an interest in science subjects and completed Class X with an overall CGPA of 9. Monu is a keen writer and also actively participates in quiz competitions. He has several prizes to his credit in these activities. Under the Arts & Performing Arts Programme, he takes drawing classes in Vidya and Child and has turned out to become a good artist. He actively participates in painting and drawing events and has won several competitions over the

years. He has made designs and painted the classrooms of one of our centres under the Creative Project Showcase ’I Can’. He also enjoys playing badminton and football.

Monu Prajapati

A word from Mrs. Prajapati “Two of my children, Tina and Sonu have studied in Vidya & Child and my third child Monu is currently enrolled in the Foundation Programme of Vidya & Child. It has been a long and fruitful association with my daughter Tina doing her B. Com from Deshbandhu College and Sonu pursuing his graduation from GNIIT. Monu is in Class XI and wishes to be a doctor. Apart from his regular after school classes at Vidya & Child, they conduct mock tests to help him prepare for his board exams. He tells me that he understands better in Vidya & Child’s After School classes than his regular school classes. Had it not been for Vidya & Child, my children would have received no guidance outside of school as neither are we educated nor can we afford a tutor. The teachers at Vidya & Child often meet me and the only question they ask is, “How are the children doing?” This kind of personal involvement is what causes our bond to strengthen. What more does a parent want?”

talented people working shoulder to shoulder with

extremely experienced people, academicians, creative

professionals, people from corporate sector, people from

shoulders are flanked by young minds.

This diversity has helped us evolve as a team and made

us learn from and grow with each other.

It humbles us each day to see the belief that people have

shown in the vision and mission of the organization.

Many people have continued to be with Vidya & Child for

many years now. The Annual Meet every year celebrates

and felicitates those who have been with us for 1 year

and also those who have completed 5 , 10 and 15 years at

The concert began with the Classical Vocal Rendition- ‘Raag Yaman ka Safar,’ a jour-ney into the beautiful Raag Yaman through Vilambit Khayal, Bandish, Bandishi Thumri and concluded with the famous Sufi song ‘O Lal Meri Pat,’ that reverberated the hall with applauses. It was followed by the performance by junior most group with the song 'Lakkadi ki Kaathi', depicting childhood. To heighten the spirit of the children, Tapan Chakravarty, Retired IPS and Musician and Pandit Deepak Chatterjee, retired Senior Reader, Faculty of Music and Fine Arts, Delhi University, were present as the guest of honour. “I really enjoyed the performances by these kids. In this era where there are more takers for hip-hop and jazz, interest of these children in traditional music is commendable,” said Pandit Deepak Chatterjee. Tabla performance by children kept the audience spellbound. The major highlight of the concert was the performance by the musical band, Sing along India, by the children of Vidya and Child. Jyoti Sriram, who came to watch the concert with her aunt said, “The whole concert was extremely entertaining. This is a brilliant platform to encourage the students and I think the NGO is doing a great job by tapping their talent.
