Each exam is developed by a commit- tee of college and university faculty and AP teachers, ensuring that AP exams are aligned with the same high standards expected by college faculty at some of the nation’s liberal arts and research institutions. More than 3,800 colleges and univer- sities annually receive AP scores. Most four-year colleges in the United States provide credit and/or advanced place- ment for qualifying exam scores. Research consistently shows that AP students who score a 3 or higher on AP Exams (based on a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest) typically expe- rience greater academic success in col- lege and have higher college graduation rates than students who do not partici- pate in AP. The College Board is a non-for-profit membership association whose mission is to connect students to college success and opportunity. Founded in 1900, the College Board is composed of more than 5,700 schools, colleges, universi- ties and other educational organizations. Each year, the College Board serves seven million students and their parents, 23,000 high schools and 3,800 colleges through major programs and services in college readiness, college admission, guidance, assessment, financial aid and enrollment. FISH of Wantagh honored at luncheonFederation of Organizations hosted a

Senior Volunteer RecognitionLuncheon last month at the CrestHollow Country Club.

The event, which was attended byover 500 guests, served to honor seniorvolunteer organizations on LongIsland. FISH of Wantagh was selectedto represent the Nassau County RetiredSenior Volunteer Program, one of fourorganizations honored for providingvolunteer services to their communi-ties.

Sally Lubell, director of FISH(Friends in Safe Hands), was one offour featured speakers at the occasion. She spoke of the mission of FISH whichis to provide safe, reliable and friendlydoor-to-door transportation for elderly

residents of Wantagh and Bellmore tomedical appointments and for othervital errands. She pointed out that FISHof Wantagh is a completely volunteeroperation, run out of members’ homeswith transportation provided by volun-teer drivers using their own cars.

FISH services approximately 90 eld-erly neighbors, provides around 850round trips per year and relies on 50-60volunteers from Wantagh, Bellmoreand surrounding communities includ-ing Massapequa, Merrick, Seaford,Levittown and East Meadow.

FISH of Wantagh has been in exis-tence for 42 years. Mrs. Lubell told theaudience that FISH was founded inApril of 1970 by a group of Wantaghresidents. “They were following the

trend of a global FISH movementwhich had begun in the early ’60s. Theidea was to remedy a general socialmalaise of the time by bringing backold-fashioned neighborliness and car-ing,” she explained.

Although at one time there may havebeen nearly 32 independent FISH chap-ters on Long Island, today almost allexcept for the Wantagh chapter havedisappeared. Mrs. Lubell noted that“we have come to focus exclusively onthe plight of senior neighbors who livein a cloud of worry about ‘how to getthere.’ Whatever it is, wherever – ‘get-ting there’ is the problem.”

Over time, the volunteer roster ofFISH has dwindled significantly. As theoriginal volunteers aged and retired, the

number of FISH volunteers has fallenfrom as many as 100 to less than 60.FISH of Wantagh finds itself short onboth drivers and phone coordinators.

Any residents of Wantagh, Bellmoreor surrounding towns who would liketo volunteer are encouraged to leave anumber for callback with the FISHanswering service: 861-6032. As Sallysays, “If you can give one day a monthor even as little as an hour, we welcomeyour participation.”

FISH of Wantagh is a nonsectariancommunity organization partially fund-ed by the Nassau County Office for theAging through the New York StateOffice for the Aging. Supplementalinsurance is provided and drivers arereimbursed for mileage.

“TRAINED" CHORUS: The Wantagh Museum on grounds that showcase the com-munity's original Long Island Rail Road Station (dating back to 1885) and a LIRRrailroad car used in 1912, among preserved memorabilia, was the venue for aLong Island Harmonizers outdoor concert, free to the public last week. The localchorus members are part of the Barbershop Harmony Society.

An ounce of prevention...Next Tuesday is National Night Out, when

communities across the country gather for funand to get to know their law enforcement friendsbetter.

Around here, the Nassau County and Freeportpolice, together with other community organiza-tions, are hosting a Night Out at Cow MeadowPark in Freeport, starting at 6 p.m.

Gangs and teen violence can be prevented. Anounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Police and their communities always need toknow and work with each other. As they say, “Ifyou see something, say something.”

And one way is for police to visit classroomsand become known and trusted friends of thekids. Another is to organize sports events for kidsand teens to help them use their energy in posi-tive ways, and learn teamwork skills that willserve them in whatever jobs they choose. Whereyoung people have hope of a good future, the lureof crime is less strong. Our police are doing thesethings and more to help build the character oflaw-abiding citizens.

Neighborhood watch groups could alwaysbenefit from more young members, just like theauxiliary police and junior firefighters. And theseyoung members can develop skills that couldhelp with their future careers. For example, morethan one young ambulance volunteer has becomea medical doctor.

National Night Out highlights the importanceof community policing, work that goes on everyday of the year.

Cedar Creek Park to get bike rental?Building upon his Fit Nassau initia-

tive to help residents live a healthylifestyle, Nassau County ExecutiveEdward P. Mangano issued a Requestfor Proposals (RFP) last week seekingthe establishment of two bicyclerental concessions at Cedar CreekPark in Seaford and Eisenhower Parkin East Meadow.

“Recreational cycling has becomeincreasingly more popular as it pro-vides everyone with an opportunity toenjoy the outdoors while taking part ina healthy activity. Bike riding offershealthy and family-friendly fun,” saidCounty Executive Mangano.

“We are committed to providingresidents and visitors with a wide

range of recreational activities in ourparks, and biking along NassauCounty’s paths and trailways is agreat way to enhance the experience.”

Nassau County is requesting pro-posals from all individuals and firmsthat have interest in managing andoperating rental stations to providebicycles as well as the repair and saleof bicycle equipment accessories atthe two county parks. The successfulbidder may also suggest additionallocations in the Nassau County parkssystem. Prospective vendors musthave a history of community involve-ment as well as extensive experiencein the bicycle rental business.

Cedar Creek Park is adjacent to a

4.5 mile paved bike path that runsalong the Wantagh State Parkwaybefore ending at Ocean Parkway. Thestate Department of Transportationhas planned an additional 4.5 milebike path to connect Ocean Parkwaybetween the Wantagh Parkways andCaptree State Park in the Town ofBabylon.

Eisenhower Park, at 930 acres, isone of the largest public spaces in theNew York metropolitan area – largerthan Central Park. It has approximate-ly 20 miles of paved bike paths.
