    SPECIAL ABILITIES

    Flight (Su) An arcanaloth can magically fly at a speed of

    60 feet with good maneuverability. This is in all otherrespects similar to a flyspell cast by an 18th-levelcaster. If dispelled, the arcanaloth can resume this effecas free action on its next turn.

    Item Mastery (Ex) Arcanaloths are masters of magicalitems and can use any spell completion item as if it hadthat spell on his spell list.

    Partial Immunity to Spells (Ex) Arcanaloths arecompletely immune to mind-affecting spells and effects.

    Poison (Ex) Injury, Fortitude DC 22, initial damage 1d6Strength, secondary damage 2d6 Strength. The saveDC is Constitution-based.

    Summon Yugoloths (Sp) Once per day an arcanaloth canattempt to summon 1-2 nycaloths or 1 shadoloth with a70% chance of success. This ability is the equivalent ofan 8th-level spell.

    Tongues (Su) Arcanaloths are under the continuous effectof a tongues spell (caster level 18th).

    True Seeing (Su) Arcanaloths have a continuous trueseeingability, as the spell (caster level 18th).

    Arcanaloths are the arcane masters of yugoloth society,possessing powers rivaling that of any mortal wizard and,sometimes, even those of the Archfiends.

    STRATEGIES AND TACTICS

    Arcanaloths are supremely intelligent. They always haveseveral backup plans incase their current one fails. Theydisplay a general disdain for melee combat and they preferto stand back and destroy their enemies with potent rangedspells. This disdain carries over even to spells that requirethem to get into melee range to use.

    Arcanaloths are rarely encountered alone, they are usuallyencountered with a troupe of lackies (mezzoloths,canoloths, skereloths, and sometimes a piscoloth or two)that they use to keep their foes busy while they sit backand casually unleash their destructive arcane armament.

    SAMPLE ENCOUNTER

    An arcanaloth is usually encountered with a group offlunkies, usually mezzoloths, canoloths, and piscoloths,although sometimes they bring along a shadoloth foradded protection, though not even the arcanaloths fullytrust those duplicitous fiends.

    Maasimilor the Mad (EL 21): An arcanaloth known as

    Maasimilor the Mad (arcanaloth wizard 2) has been sighteddoing excavations in Phlegethon, the third layer ofPandemonium. Called 'the Mad' because of his violentswings between raging anger and a cold, emotionlessfaade, Maasimilor is searching for some unknown powersealed deep within the rock of Pandemonium. Hisentourage, which includes a piscoloth, 4 mezzoloths, ashadoloth and a dozen dominated slaves, is anxious to ridthemselves of the raging arcanaloth, who they assume hasbeen driven mad due to his prolonged absence from theirhome plane of Gehenna. They wish to return to Gehennabut they cannot until Maasimilor succeeds on his missionof finding whatever it is he is searching for, unless a group

    of hapless PC's manage to murder him. In this case, theshadoloth approaches the PC's under the guise of anescaped worker. The yugoloths stay out of the fight untilMaasimilor falls, at which point they attempt to slaughterthe weakened PC's

    ECOLOGY

    Arcanaloths can be either male or female (whichever suitstheir fancy), though how they reproduce is unknown. Sometieflings and half-fiends trace their lineages back toarcanaloth ancestors, but most arcanaloths chuckle at theidea. Sinful perversions of the flesh are considered a waste

    of time and recourses to most arcanaloths and manysimply refuse to accept the idea that one of their orderwould couple with something so 'base' as a mortal.

    Environment: Arcanaloths are native to the Bleak Eternityof Gehenna. They draw their power from the fiendishfurnaces that blaze within the hearts of the volcanoes andthus rarely leave the plane unless they are on explicitorders from a superior.

    Typical Physical Characteristics: Arcanaloths typicallystand about 5 to 6 feet tall and weigh about 140 to 170pounds. Their fur is usually brown, black, or silvery white.

    Alignment: Arcanaloths are steeped in lies and betrayal.They are always neutral evil.

    SOCIETY

    Arcanaloths are the brokers and dealers of the yugolothrace. They bargain with both the baatezu and tanar'ri,hoping to play them against each other or, at the veryleast, force them to one up the others offer. They are veryreceptive to bribes that help improve their own personalwealth and power.

    Arcanaloths dwell within the Tower of the Arcanalothswhich rises from the ash-covered slopes of Chamada, oneof the mountainous, volcanic layers of Gehenna There thearcanaloths studiously record the history of their race uponthe hanging, flayed skins of petitioners, broker deals, andparticipate in daily sessions of betrayal, manipulation, andgeneral maliciousness.

    TYPICAL TREASURE

    Arcanaloths prefer treasure that helps to grant them poweror wealth. Magical trinkets, obscure spell scrolls, and anyitems that help protect them are treasured above all others

    Arcanaloths usually scribe their spells into large tomesfashioned from a combination of mortal, demonic, andinfernal flesh fused together into one gruesome whole. Thespellbooks are written in such obtuse and confusingmanners that deciphering them is even more difficult thannormal. Add 5 to the DC to decipher an arcanaloth'sspellbook. An arcanaloth's spellbook could have access toany spell within the Player's Handbook, though arcanalothsprefer spells that control, hinder, or otherwise obfuscate

    over flashier, boom-boom spells (though arcanalothsunderstand that these spells are very important too).

    YUGOLOTH QUALITIES

    Immunity to acid and poison. Resistance to cold 10, electricity 10, and fire 10.Summon Yugoloths (Sp): Yugoloths share the ability tosummon others of their kind (the success chance and typeof yugoloth summoned are noted in each monsterdescription). Telepathy

    Except where otherwise noted, yugoloths speak Abyssal,Celestial, Infernal, and their own secret tongue.
