Abstract
An Objection to the Argument of the Composition of the Awakening of Faith in Mahayana within the
Dilun School
Seok, Gil-Am
It is not easy to make clear the relation between the Awakening of Faith in
Mahayana (abridged into the Awakening below) and the other sutras and shastras
translated by Bodhiruci and Ratnamati in the Dilun school. However, according to
some results from recent philological approaches in Japanese academia, the terms
and styles of sentences in their translation show many cases of comparability
beyond similarity. This appears to evidence very strongly the writing of the
Awakening by Bodhiruci or someone, near to him, belonging to the northern
school of the Dilun, dissolving the previous argument of its writing by the
southern school of Dilun.
Nevertheless, the doctrinal discrepancies between the Awakening of Faith in
Mahayana and the Dilun school make it uncomfortable for us to agree with the
above observation. Here, the writer examines the cases of contrast, unlike the
previous researches focused upon the cases of similarity, between the Awakening
of Faith in Mahayana and the Dilun school.
First of all, unlike the accepted theory that the theories of consciousness are
different between the southern and the northern school of the Dilun, the theory of
consciousness in the southern school turns out to be rather based upon the sutras
and shastras translated by Bodhiruci who is the originator of the northern school.
According to this result, the passages of the Awakening asserted previously to be
similar to the corresponding passages of the texts translated by Bodhiruci turns
out not to be so, but to be attempts to exclude any possibility of doctrinal
misinterpretation in those corresponding passages. In addition, unlike The

Awakening's strong intention to comprehend the Mahayana, the texts of the
school of the Dilun have no such intention, whose clearness also shows the
doctrinal gap between them.
Therefore, the terminological accordance between the Awakening and the Dilun
school does not lead necessarily into their doctrinal accordance, which requires
more comprehensive comparative analysis of their doctrines, including Sanskrit
Yogacara texts.
