There was a 4– 5 month timeline for completing all her courses. There were specific assignment deadlines.

She also realized that her parents did not know the materials so she needed to learn it all by herself.

Bridey had to create a plan of study and then do it on her own. She has shown she could teach herself when needed.

If she now has a bad teacher, she simply goes back to IU mode and thinks about how to teach herself the content

Studying while sailing gave me the chance to explore the world outside my comfort zone, while I remained a student.

I am proud that I learned how to organize my time and be in charge of my education. My teachers at IU encouraged me to contact them when needed and they bent a lot of their rules to talk to me outside their office hours to fit better with when I was in port.

My social life changed drastically. My sisters and I became closer and a really great evening was sitting on the tramp on the front of the boat watching the sun going down over the ocean, hoping to see the elusive ‘‘green flash’’ as the sun dips down below the horizon.

I think this new world of open access provides for students some exciting and unprecedented opportunities for learning. It also presents new dangers

new dangers:The online learning equivalent of sending our kids into a wilderness with no map or compass. We have to be willing to provide the maps and the compass so that when they get out into this new open world of instant access, they will have guideposts, warning signs, and even a moral compass to keep them on a productive path

1. Students: working adults2. 10 thousand (2004), 15 thousand (2006), more

than 20 thousand (2007)3. the diverse backgrounds of adult learners

Dr. Mike Offerman, Vice Chairman and Former President of Capella University:What really surprises me and keeps me engaged in adult higher education are the wonderful stories of personal achievement and overcoming of considerable obstacles by adult learners who are able to finally achieve their dreams

K-12, and higher education3. Use cable television4. Reach people in rural and remote area5. Change of delivery learning system: cable channel from

to internet protocol infrastructure

Glenn R. Jones, the Owner of Jones International University:‘‘Let us take notice of our environment. It is time now to fuse our knowledge society electronic tools with our great teaching institutions and information repositories. It is time to create a world that is, like Athens was, a great school, a world vibrant with interest and excitement about education, a world where educational opportunity is visible to all and hope is alive, a world that sees the wilderness of information as our new frontier”

Ray Schroeder, Director of Technology-Enhanced Learning at UIS :a consortium of other mostly regional comprehensive universities to follow the path of the UIS online program

Dr. Sanjaya Mishra from the IGNOU distance education program :I think the University will get to 2 million students by 2010. Normally the addition every year is about 100 thousand. Interestingly, our system does not work in the normal class based way. Mostly the students receive printed learning materials, attend counselling/tutorial sessions (optional, but typically with about 30 students), do assignments, participate in teleconferences and sit in the final examinations. So, in a cohort, the registration of students ranges from 50 to 50,000 depending on programmes.

• What happens when a country adds 73 million more Internet users in just a year?

• What happens to entertainment and leisure activities, commerce, government, and community services?

• What happens when such numbers enter the realm of education?

The Los Angeles Times :‘‘FreeRice.com is one of the most ingenious websites of 2007. In the best spirit of the Internet, it offers education, entertainment and a way to change the world— all for free.’’

A person could learn new words while helping feed people somewhere else on this planet

Page 28: E Learning And Blended Learning Timbul

1. The movement has spread across the planet2. Represent a mere 10 percent of the enrollments in higher

education and much less than that in K– 12 education3. Foster student knowledge sharing and increased

awareness of other peoples and cultures4. Electronic mentors and coaches can be brought in where

needed5. Learners gain new skills needed in this globalized economy

as well as a sense of personal control and ownership over their own learning

6. Acquire new skills that help them be more knowledgeable and productive citizens

Page 29: E Learning And Blended Learning Timbul

1. Many educators and trainers remain quite reluctant to adopt online learning

2. Limited budgets for such changes3. Lack of time or recognition for use of online technology4. Limited management support they have for such changes5. No denying that few were trained for the new job duties of an

online instructor6. Online courses are often lacking in interactivity and

engagement7. In a word, much like traditional classroom-based instruction, it

is boring8. There are deep concerns9. The pockets of resistance, noted earlier, indeed are warranted
