Introduction to Mount Fuji
It’s to prepare you …
… to introduce Mount Fuji
… and Japan in general.
Notice that I’m stealing images!
Stealing is bad!!
But this is education-related on Powerpoint
Nobody cares!
Images on the WEBSITE …
… are all open-source …
Hokusai Katsushika ( 葛飾北斎 )
Hokusai died in 1849
So it’s legal stealing!
If you think I’m doing something illegal …
… let me know.
I’m doing my best to remain legal!

The images are just illustrations – you don’t have to memorize anything.
But these old “open source” images are the best, anyway!
At least … I think so.
Utagawa Hiroshige died in1858.

Influenced “Art Nouveau”
Art Nouveau
Nineteenth century cool Japan
But DON’T memorize details about the art!
Unless it’s mentioned in the text
Legal stealing!
Mostly, the pictures are just to make the site look nicer.
And for emphasis
No need to memorize anything
We will use pictures in the quizzes
Just comprehension and speaking practice
Nothing to memorize!!
Test
• For the test…• Focus on text• Information in quizzes• Information in embedded listening• Information in embedded videos
Pair Quizzes
• We’ll probably do some pair quizzes in class• Speaking practice• Take your time• Do the quizzes carefully• Work together• Communicate
Goal of the course
• YOU should be able to introduce Mount Fuji• And talk generally about other tourist
attractions• So we’re trying to give you some practice• It’s NOT just me talking• What do I know?• I’m just a legal stealer!!
The Test is in July
• So don’t panic!!• There’s plenty of time• Take it easy• Pay attention in class and you’ll probably do
well
So … why introduce Mount Fuji?
Tourism
People are not stopping at Asakusa
Tourist attraction
People want the REAL symbol of Japan
More tourists are coming from Tokyo
They want to get up close to the mountain
Maybe climb the mountain
I’m not recommending it
Personally …
Not a pleasant experience
And it causes environmental damage!
Maybe only Special People …
Should be ALLOWED to climb it
After all … it’s a SACRED mountain
The history of keeping Mount Fuji happy
Big Shrines
Little shrines
Perhaps we should keep the mountain happy
We’ll be thinking about that
Better from a distance
Why climb it?
Beautiful shrouded in mist or cloud
Beautiful from a distance
Beautiful from a distance
Beautiful from any angle
Not beautiful UP CLOSE
Maybe you will be lucky
Get a nice view from the top
I haven’t had very good views from the top
Cloud magnet
So I’m not recommending the climb
But people ARE coming
In great numbers
Not this!
Not this!
Not this!
Not this!
Not this!
Not this!
It’s this!
So lots more tourists these days
More opportunities for intercultural communication
Intercultural communication
Direct link to my next class!!!
LOTS more foreigners coming here
Just outside my house
Tourism brings in money
And progress
And we are a UNIVERSITY!
We MUST be …
very very very very serious
About our responsibilities
What are our responsibilities?
• To have good information• And to be able to express it
So…
• We are going to study the important, relevant information
• And we are going to practice our communication skills in related ways
• And we are going to try to be • Very• Very• Very• serious
• Anyway• Let’s do our best
携帯 tasks
• Students of English:• Speak only English!
• Students of Japanese:• Speak Japanese where appropriate
For example …
• Student A:• 日本の偉大な象徴、富士山は静岡県と山梨県境に位置する。• Japanese students: Say this IN ENGLISH to
your partner:• Mount Fuji, the great symbol of Japan, is
situated on the border of Shizuoka and Yamanashi Prefectures.
Fill in the gap:
• Student A:• 日本の偉大な象徴、富士山は静岡県と山梨県境に位置する。• Student B has this:• Mount Fuji, the great …………… of Japan, is
situated on the border of Shizuoka and Yamanashi Prefectures.
• So B should be able to fill in “symbol” and get the answer right.
Students of Japanese:
• Student A:• 日本の偉大な象徴、富士山は静岡県と山梨県境に位置する。• Either make it a reading or speaking task:• Do your best:• Mount Fuji, the great …………… of Japan, is situated on
the border of Shizuoka and Yamanashi Prefectures.• So B should be able to fill in “symbol” and get the
answer right.
For example:
• Student B:• 日本の最高峰で、標高 3,776 メートルである。• Student A:• It is the highest …………… in Japan, standing as high
as 3,776 meters.• Peak
• Some questions have hints: ignore it if it’s too easy.
Picture questions: Spot the difference
Is the picture EXACTLY the same
These can be challenging
And I’m trying to trick you!!
Do your best to give details to eachother
Students of English, speak English
Students of Japanese, speak Japanese
Games can be a very useful learning tool
• But paradoxicallly, ….• … you have to be …• … very serious!
Verbal spot the difference• For example:• A• これはペンです。• This is a pen
• B• これは鉛筆です。• This is a pencil
• NOT the same
• Students of English, speak English• Student of Japanese, speak Japanese
Vocabulary
• 位置する• Situated
• 県境• Prefectural boundary (border of the
prefecture)
• 噴火• Eruption
• 火山• volcano
• 神社• Shrine
• お寺• Temple
• 海抜• Above sea level
• 標高• Altitude
• 誇り• Pride (glory)• Boasts
• 体積• Volume
• 周囲• Circumference• … around
• 面積• Area
• 平方メートル• Square meters

Some questions like this:
• A: This ….. a ………• B: ……. is ….. pen
• Say it in English• Fill in the spaces
Local and Global
• What does it mean?• Nothing really
• Just LOCAL has some Japanese
• Do both LOCAL and GLOBAL
Students of English, speak English
• Some global questions might be better for students of Japanese:
• This is a pen• Say it in Japanese, if you’re a student of
Japanese!• English otherwise.
Anyway, do your best
• Don’t take it TOO seriously• Take it seriously enough to have fun
