Since freshman year, High School has primarily been my world. I can still remember how, as we drove down the street, my mom would point at the high school and say, One day, thats where youre going to be going. High school seemed distant and foreign; it was a veritable end-of-the-rainbow that I can only conceptualize. And now, Im entering my last year at the place, and I dont know what to think or feel.

When I moved to San Gabriel Valley in third grade, I saw fourth graders, who were in the next school up, as being big, mature, venerable beings. Upon becoming a fourth grader myself, I noticed I still felt small and stupid compared to those sixth graders who seemed to run the school playground. Even as I graduated into each level of apparent maturity, I found myself juxtaposing myself yet again with people a few years older and feeling smaller for it. As I got older, I would be disappointed that I remained the same, immature and stupid kid I always was.

Freshman year of high school was no different. The section leaders of each instrument section in band were indistinguishable from adults in my eyes. Their look, their playing abilities, and their overall presence were those of superiors.

Will I actually be one of them in just a few years?

The thought boggled my mind. I had three sect ion leaders-- a l l seniors-- and each of them were, in their own way, intimidating. One of them was massive. Not in height, but in build. His biceps

were as big as my head and he looked like he could snap any freshmans neck in a second with his pinky finger. One of the other seniors was energetic and down to earth. Although his musical skills werent as sharp as the other two, he had a fun personality that made him easy to look up to. The third senior was simply admirable. He was laid back, casual, and led by example rather than by giving orders. He was far better than all of us at playing music, but he also had many cool non-music demonstrations for us. He would grip a vertical pole with his hands and through some seemingly inhuman force, hold himself up perpendicular to the pole, like a ag. Once more, the rainbow seemed to shoot off into the distance.

I am now a senior and an assistant section leader, yet I still feel like a freshman at times. The new freshmen have no reason to look up to me, as far as I can see. Im lazy and I have little self control. I dont lead by example but with words. I still blow up and verbally attack people just as fiercely and cruelly as I did when I was younger. I still do not feel like a Senior; I simply have seniority over others.

Despite approaching the last year at the place, I never really reached the place my mother pointed out as we drove by. Her ngers never pointed towards the buildings themselves, but an idea, the idea of maturity, of self-control and self-reliance. Of being someone younger kids can look up to while seeing the actual me, not a mere phantom of maturity.

The phantom of maturity that Ive been seeing ever since I was in third grade.

Its a long rainbow, but I`m still young.
