The Naka family residence is a moat residence on the north bank of the Yamato river, in
the Yamato region. Surrounded by moats on two of its sides and a bamboo grove, the
residence preserves the style of a typical Heijo estate. The Naka clan, which used to call
themselves the Adachi clan, have been living on this land since the Muromachi period.
During the warring states period, they played an active role as samurais for the Tsutsui
Clan before later taking on agriculture and becoming big landowners. This is why the house
mixes architectural characteristics of both samurai and agricultural residences. It is
speculated that the main room was built in 1659 while it is written that the more recent
tatami room was build in the second year of Anei (1773).
There are many interesting things about this residence, such as the largest hearth in
Japan, the steam bath (from the Edo period and unusual for a residential house), the
oldest umeboshi in Japan, as well as the privately owned Buddha statue room and temple
kitchen.
