the current head of the family had the building restored in 2008, it was opened

The Fujioka family which have served as the head of the village since the Edo

the Edo through Meiji period. From the construction of the walls to the girders,

all of the residences expose the prosperity of the Fujioka family. The spare room

Today, Takayama is the only place that still produces chasen in Japan.

Although Takayama is most well-known for its chasen production, the

neighbourhood also developed an expertise in the making of other bamboo

items, such as tea tools and knitting needles. Some of these products are

exhibited and can be purchased at the museum.

Every Sunday (except in December and on the first Sunday of January) from

The Naka family residence is a moat residence on the north bank of the Yamato river, in

the Yamato region. Surrounded by moats on two of its sides and a bamboo grove, the

residence preserves the style of a typical Heijo estate. The Naka clan, which used to call

themselves the Adachi clan, have been living on this land since the Muromachi period.

During the warring states period, they played an active role as samurais for the Tsutsui

Clan before later taking on agriculture and becoming big landowners. This is why the house

mixes architectural characteristics of both samurai and agricultural residences. It is

speculated that the main room was built in 1659 while it is written that the more recent

tatami room was build in the second year of Anei (1773).

There are many interesting things about this residence, such as the largest hearth in

Japan, the steam bath (from the Edo period and unusual for a residential house), the

oldest umeboshi in Japan, as well as the privately owned Buddha statue room and temple

kitchen.
