PERSISTENT PRAYER To the best of our knowledge, the authors of the New Testament did not spend much time in each other’s company following the Resurrection. They took their charge to go to the nations and spread the Good News seriously. Paul and Luke are an exception to this, having travelled together on missionary jour-neys. It is no accident, then, that perseverance in prayer is a favorite theme of both authors. Luke’s Gospel (which speaks most frequently about Jesus’ own prayer), Acts, and the Pauline Letters all exhort us to unceasing prayer. Paul’s personality was certainly tenacious; he most likely would have admired the persistent widow in today’s Gospel passage. The purpose of these passages is not to make us think—as infants and toddlers do—that if we keep asking or yelling or crying we will eventually get our way. No, the point is that when true disciples believe in something, we will persist in following that belief whether it is convenient or not, even when we come up against seemingly insurmount-able obstacles. ORACIÓN PERSISTENTE Hasta donde sabemos, los autores del Nuevo Testamento no pasaron mucho tiempo juntos después de la Resurrección. Tomaron muy en serio la orden de ir a las naciones y espar-cir la Buena Nueva. Pablo y Lucas son una excepción pues viajaron juntos en jornadas misioneras. No es accidental, entonces, que la perseverancia en la oración sea un tema favorito de ambos autores. El Evangelio de san Lucas (que

habla más frecuentemente sobre la oración de Jesús), los Hechos de los Apóstoles y las cartas de san Pablo, todas nos exhortan a rezar incesantemente. La personalidad de Pablo era ciertamente tenaz; muy posible-mente él habría admirado la persistencia de la viuda en el pasaje del Evangelio de hoy. El propósito de estos pasajes no es hacernos pensar –como hacen los bebés y los niños pequeñitos– que si per-sistimos en gritar y llorar, eventualmente conseguiremos lo que queremos. No, el punto es que cuando los verdaderos discípulos creemos en algo, persistimos y seguimos creyéndolo sea conve-niente o inconveniente, aún cuando nos tropecemos con obstáculos aparentemente insuperables. 2 November – All Souls Day Novena & Masses

Our parish will begin its All Souls Novena, a series of 9 con-

secutive Masses beginning with the 8:00 AM Daily Mass on All Souls Day (Saturday, 2 November) and continuing at the

5:00 PM Anticipated Mass of Sunday on Saturday evening, at all the Sunday Masses (8:00 AM, 10:00 AM, 1:00 PM,

3:00 PM – Mass in Polish, and 7:00 PM), and the 8:00 AM

Daily Mass on Monday and Tuesday, 4 and 5 November.

You may enroll deceased loved ones in the Novena by

using the Novena envelope (available in the mailed packets or on the table in the vestibule) to list their names and in-

clude your donation. Envelopes need to be turned in by the

8:00 AM Mass on Saturday, 2 November.

In addition, on Saturday, 2 November, there will be di-

ocesan celebrations of Memorial Masses at the two Catholic Cemeteries here in Tucson. Both Masses will begin at 8:00

AM; one at Our Lady of the Desert Cemetery (2151 S. Avenida Los Reyes), the other at Holy Hope Cemetery

(3555 N. Oracle Road). Refreshments will be available after

the Masses.

Feast of All Saints & All Souls Day: in our parish and diocese

Nuestra parroquia empezará la Novena de los Fieles Difuntos, una serie de 9 Misas consecutivas en la Misa de las 8:00 AM de la mañana del Día de los Fieles Difuntos (sábado, el 2 de noviembre) y continuará con la Misa anticipada del domingo a las 5:00 PM ; el domingo, todas las Misas de 8:00 AM, 10:00 AM, 1:00 PM, 3:00 PM (Misa en Polaco) y 7:00 PM; y la Misa diaria a las 8:00 AM del lunes 4 y martes 5 de noviembre.

Communion Ministers for the Sick & Homebound

When considering the Healing Ministry of Jesus, our parish has a large responsibility. Within our boundaries are Tucson Medical Center, numerous Nursing Homes and private Adult Care Facilities as well as many homebound persons. Being able to provide access to Communion on a regular basis is a big challenge. To meet this challenge, we rely on the gener-osity of parishioners to give some time to brining communion to the sick. Currently, we need to develop this ministry with new ministers. If you would be willing to be an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion (EMHC) for the sick and home-bound, please contact Br. Jorge Monterroso, O.Carm. at the Parish Office (795-1633 ext 116; jmonterroso@stcyril.com).

Para Villa María: cobijas para las piernas, pañales para adultos y cojines decorativos.

Favor de traer las cosas a Misa a partir del próximo fin de semana y colocar las de bebé en el corralito y las de adulto en el canasto.

Next weekend is the last weekend of our an-nual collection of baby items for Reachout Women’s Center and senior adult items forVilla Maria Care Center.

Items needed include: receiving blan-kets, baby gowns, disposable baby dia-pers (all sizes), baby bottles, sleepers, washcloths & towels.

Items for the nursing home include: lap blankets, adult diapers and small decorative pillows.

Please bring items to Mass and place the items for infants in the playpen and items for adults in the basket.

A CHANGE IN OUR PROCEDURES

Because of recent problems with public use of our facilities, the church will be locked except during Masses or other ser-

vices. The outside Blessed Sacrament Chapel door will be unlocked, but the inside door to the church will also be locked.

This allows opportunity for prayer in a sacred place and avoids

having the entire church open to the public.

Market on the Move Needs Volunteers

the month, beginning in November and continuing

through May, from 8:00 to 11:00 AM. Our new parish coordinator, Chris Christopher, is seeking volunteers.
