THE RESURRECTION OF THE DEAD
In the Apostles’ Creed we proclaim that we “believe in the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.” Today’s readings invite us to explore these beliefs. The passage from Second Maccabees makes it clear that belief in the resurrection of the dead was not born in Christianity, but in a time preceding Jesus’ coming. The martyred brothers proclaim their conviction that God will raise them to new life. No threat of death can bring them to break one of their religious laws. Death of their bodies is no death at all, compared to the spiritual death that would result from transgressing the law.
The silly riddle about marriage put to Jesus in the Gospel gives him an opportunity to speak of the “coming age,” when no one will be given in marriage, and no one will be liable to death. Jesus too stresses how ancient is this teaching, attributing this belief to Moses, who knew that God is the God of the living. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Cada domingo proclamamos: “Creemos en la comunión de los santos, el perdón de los pecados, la resurrección de la carne, y la vida eterna”. Las lecturas de hoy nos invitan a explorar estas creencias. El pasaje de 2 Macabeos deja claro que la creencia en la
resurrección de los muertos no se originó en el cristia-nismo sino antes de la venida de Jesús. Los hermanos mártires y la madre de ellos proclaman su convicción de que Dios los resucitará a una nueva vida. Ningún temor a la muerte puede hacerlos romper una de sus leyes religiosas. La muerte de sus cuerpos no es muerte en absoluto comparada con la muerte espiri-
tual que resultaría de la trasgresión de la ley. El tonto acertijo sobre el matrimonio que le presenta a Jesús en el Evangelio le da la oportunidad de hablar sobre “el mundo futuro”, cuando nadie se casará y nadie morirá. Medical Researchers looking for participants A parishioner is a member of the CATS Research Center at The Univer-sity of Arizona. He is on a team that is conducting a clinical trial open to any healthy adult 18 years and older.
This clinical trial, a part of cancer research, is a dose finding trial to determine the amount of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) that is fea-sible and well tolerated for a 90 day period.
There is no cost to participants, and com-pensation is included for study participation. If you are interested or have questions, please call 626-8000.

Have a say in where your taxes are spent Arizona’s Tax Credit system allows tax payers to direct their taxes in two key areas – in service of the working poor through the Arizona Charitable Tax Credit and to education through the Tuition Support Tax Credit.
Catholic Community Services is one agency that qualifies for the Charitable Tax Credit. In directing taxes ($400 maximum credit for mar-ried couples filing jointly; $200 for an individual filer) to this agency you receive a dollar-for-dollar credit that will reduce your Arizona state income tax. And you no longer need to item-ize deductions on your state return to claim the credit.
The Charitable Tax Credit is in addition to and completely separate from the tax credit that you can direct to the Catholic Tuition Support Organization (CTSO).

Communion Ministers for the Sick & Homebound
When considering the Healing Ministry of Jesus, our par-ish has a large responsibility. Within our boundaries are Tucson Medical Center, numerous Nursing Homes and private Adult Care Facilities as well as many homebound persons. Be-ing able to provide access to Communion on a regular basis is a big challenge. If you would be willing to be an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion (EMHC) for the sick and home-bound, please contact Br. Share-A-Lunch supports Casa Maria’s mission
For over 20 years, our parish has been involved with a very “behind the scenes” ministry called Share-A-Lunch. Parish-ioners have come together on the 3rd Sunday of the month, every month of the year to make sandwiches for Casa Maria – a refuge for the poor and homeless. This ministry is
funded by donations parishioners make in our Second Sunday Sharing when marking off Share-A-Lunch on the special collection envelope. If you would like to know more about Casa Maria, y o u c a n v i s i t t h e i r w e b s i t e (www.casamariatucson.org) or their bilingual blog (www.vocesdecasamaria.org). If you would

Movie Night
On Saturday, 23 November at 6:30 PM the Health and Wholeness Committee will follow up a successful health fair by presenting the documentary movie Forks Over Knives in Dougherty Hall.
It is a well known fact that the majority of Americans are overweight and diet is very important to our health. This documentary explores the power of eating nutritious foods to reduce chronic disease by increasing fruits and vegetables and cutting back on meats, especially processed meat, in our diet.
Join us after the 5:00 PM Mass to view the documentary and engage in a thoughtful discussion. The Health and Wholeness Committee will provide the popcorn! The event is free to all but we would gratefully accept donations to defray the cost of the film.

Coats for Kids Campaign
The 2013 campaign will benefit St. Cyril School students. Our Ave Maria Council will provide coats for 12 boys and the 4th Degree Knights of the Hughes Assembly at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish will provide coats for 12 girls.
