LUNDI 19 AOUT 2013 / MONDAY AUGUST 19, 2013 ABAKA 9 ABAKAE N G L I S H S E C T I O N MONDAY AUGUST 19, 2013 OTTAWA Isabel Bayrakdarian is one of Canadas most esteemed sopranos, and the esteem doesnt stop at our borders. She has performed far and wide and was even featured in the sound track to The Lord of the Rings. More recently she sang the starring role of Blanche in the Canadian Opera Companys production of Poulencs Dialogues des Carmelites. In fact, she has sung in almost every important musical center in the world. The program opened with Phillip Glasss Symphony No. 3, a reasonably engaging work that reflects some evo- lution from the simplistic formulae that characterized his music in the early days. But the evening really belonged to Bayrakdarian, the satin beauty, whose Contd on page 10 Bayrakdarian shimmers in sublime show By Edmond Y. Azadian An announcement was sent to the media about a lecture to be delivered on August 18 at the Congregation Bnai Israel in Tustin, Calif. A promi- nent scholar Richard Hovannisian has been invited as the lecturer. The context and the format are both interesting to the academic communi- ty as well as the general public. The lecture will follow a Kosher Armenian dinner and will deal with the similari- ties and differences between the Jewish and Armenian genocides. When the historiography of the Armenian Genocide was still in its infancy, Hovannisian became one of the early pioneers on the topic driving the issue not only to the Armenian audience, but to an international audi- ence. This latest undertaking is also directed at an audience whose sensi- tivity to the issue cannot be overesti- mated. Hovannisian is taking the Genocide discussion to the Jewish community, which is also traumatized and tormented with a catastrophic experience that befell Armenians early last century. Ever since the Jewish Holocaust, it has almost become a clich to state that had the perpetrators of the Armenian Genocide been punished, perhaps the Holocaust would have been avoided. But the cruel logic of history and politics is that human nature will not change and given the opportunity any dictator would become a Talaat, Hitler or Pol Pot. But by comparing the Armenian experience to the Jewish experience, some lessons could be learned by politicians, scholars and even by the nations affected and shaped by those historic events. There are similarities and differ- ences between the two cases. The sim- ilarities are within the realm of cause and effect. The Ittihadist leadership blamed Armenians as traitors to the Ottoman Empire, just like Hitler blamed the Jews for all the ills of German society and determined to bring the Final Solution to Jewish existence in Europe. The dissimilarities are much more pronounced since the Armenians were exterminated in their own native land while the Jews met the same fate in an alien land. As a result of the Genocide, the Armenians lost 75 percent of their population, along with their ancestral homeland of 3,000 years. The Jews received a homeland as a direct conse- quence of the Holocaust. The Balfour Declaration of 1917 to grant a home- land to the Jews did not become a reality until 1948, when the Jews took their destiny into their own hands and many European Jews sought to live lives as Israelis, not a fearful minority in Europe. The surviving Armenians lost their homes, houses of worship and all their belongings and at best, they were granted some charity in host coun- tries, while Israel became the benefi- ciary of the compensation owed to the victims of the Holocaust, despite the fact that it did not exist as a sovereign country during the Holocaust. Genocide scholars will certainly dig more similarities and differences in these to historic cases. But mutual education is necessary for both nations to understand each other and stand together as a bulwark against any future threat of ethnic cleansing. Many serious and righteous Jewish scholars, including Israel Charny, Yair Auron and others, maintain that the denial of the Armenian Genocide by the Israeli government erodes the moral foundations of the Holocaust itself. These Jewish scholars consider it a moral imperative for the Israeli gov- ernment to recognize the Armenian Genocide, over and above the political expediency of placating the Turks. The louder these righteous voices resonate, the better the chances are for recognition of the Armenian Genocide, which eventually will pave the way for the US government to join the fray. It is no secret to anyone that the impediment to that recognition comes from the people of Abraham Foxman of the Anti-Defamation League and some pro-Israeli lobbyists in Washington. Whatever these schol- ars of high integrity believe and pro- fess, does not necessarily translate into political currency. Every time Turkeys Prime Minister Recep Erdogan makes a blunder by accusing Israel of committing geno- cide against the Palestinian people, rumors circulate and actual parliamen- tary hearings are held in Israeli parlia- ment in preparation of the Jewish States recognition of the Armenian Genocide. Those inconsequential rumors evaporate and the hearings are discon- tinued, as soon as Ankara signals a conciliatory note. The most outrageous incident took place when Israeli President Shimon Peres visited Ankara and announced that the murder of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire did not amount to genocide. That was a political compli- ment presented to his Turkish hosts with the blood of 1.5 million Armenian martyrs. However, history is full of ironies. Not too much later, Mr. Contd on page 10 A Kosher Lecture at a Kosher Armenian Dinner The Library of Alexandria wins the Calouste Gulbenkian Prize The Library of Alexandria, one of the most prestigious centres of knowledge worldwide, and its director Ismail Serageldin are the winners of the 2013 Calouste Gulbenkian Prize, which amounts to 250,000. Los Angeles, July 11, 2013 - The class of 2013 of TCA Arshag Dickranian School traveled to Armenia on a two week excursion from June 17th till July 1st, after their graduation ceremony. The group was accompanied by English depart- ment chairperson Mr. Ricardo Rocha, the schools long time executive secretary Mrs. Arpy Mazloumian and her daughter Astghik, herself an alumna of the school, and several parents. The following is an account of Mr. Rochas experiences as a non-Armenian par- ticipant in the excursion: It is my distinct pleasure to report that the 2013 Senior Trip to Armenia was an overwhelming success and I had an extraordinary cultural, social and educational experience. Hambik Tours did an excellent job with all of the excursions and restaurant arrangements to: Garni, the incredible Christian Monastery of Geghard, Ashtarak, Saghmosavank, the burial site of Mesrop Mashots, and Amberd on the slopes of Mt. Aragats. Tours continued to the Etchmiadzin Cathedral, Sardarapat and Khor Virap Monastery, where Saint Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned. Next, we visited Artsakh, where our stay at Armenia Hotel was also very well organized. In Artsakh, excursions to Gandzasar and Shushi followed, and my favorite `expedition to Tatev Monastery - a 9th century Armenian monastery located in the village of Tatev in the Province on Syunik in Southern Armenia, which stands on a plateau on the edge of the deep gorge of the Vorotan River. Back in Armenia, the trip continued with tours to Gyumri (Mrs. Mazloumians hometown), Vanadzor and Spitak - the city that was the epicenter of the 1988 earthquake. Tsaghkadzor and Sevan- including a full view of Sevanavank from the top of the mountain of the peninsula- were gorgeous. We then visited Dilijan and Hagharstin Monastery. At Lake Sevan, Astghik and I accompanied some of the boys on a jet skiing excursion. Our final day included an optional tour to the Cathedral of Saint Gregory the Illuminator, a visit to the Ponchikanots and free time for packing. Throughout the trip, I was especially surprised by and pleased by the safety and security of Armenia. Absolute peace and beauty are understatements to describe not just the beautiful country, but also the harmony with which Armenia greeted all of us. The modernity, class and gallantry of the people, the ruins and the spirit of Armenia mesmerized all of us. My impression of everyone on the trip - adults and students alike - was of extreme gratitude for this once in a lifetime experience and opportunity. Visiting Armenia is a traditional activity for graduating students at TCA Arshag Dickranian School. The purpose of the trip is to give the students the opportunity to acquaint themselves with their homeland and strengthen their bond to their Armenian identity. 10 ABAKA LUNDI 19 AOUT 2013 / MONDAY AUGUST 19, 2013 Los Angeles, July 25, 2013 TCA Arshag Dickranian School held its 32nd Commencement Ceremony for its 12th, 8th, and 5th grade levels in an air of celebration on Friday, June 14, 2013 at the Walter and Laurel Karabian Hall. The final evening of the schools 2012-2013 academic year was well attended by honored guests, parents, alumni and friends, amongst The Rev. Fr. Manoug Markarian, school bene- factors Mrs. Cindy Norian, Mrs. Laural Karabian and Mr. Hmayak Baltaian, who had come along with Board Members to celebrate the proud achievements of the graduating stu- dents. The program began with the proces- sional of the 12th, 8th, and 5th grade graduates, attired in their caps and gowns, marching into the hall to take their assigned seats, among the cheers and applause of their proud parents, which was followed by the school choirs rendition of the US, Armenian and school anthems. Ms. Armenuhi Shaklian (Class of 2005), acted as the MC and talked about her experiences as an alumna, shedding light onto the opportunities lying ahead of each and every graduate from Arshag Dickranian School. Ms. Shaklian then invited Principal Maral Yeranossian to present the awards to outstanding students from 5th, 8th and 12th grades, who had excelled in their studies and related activities. Then the Class of 2013 walked across the stage to receive their high school diplomas from the Principal, Board Chairman Mr. George K. Mandossian, Mrs. Norian and Mrs. Karabian. Next, Neurophysiologist Dr. Nazely Ashikian (Class of 1999) was invited to deliver her keynote address. After greeting the graduates and attendants, Dr. Ashikian talked about her experiences as a stu- dent pursuing her dream of attaining the medical profession, whereupon ending her remarks by reminding the students of the importance of the basic education they had received at ADS and urging them to stay focused and determined in their goals. Mr. Parsegh Kartalian, vice chair- man of the board of trustees, then delivered his remarks and stressed upon the importance of maintaining the Armenian identity. Next, Principal Maral Yeranossian delivered her message to the students, expressing how much she enjoyed working with them throughout the years, first as their counselor and then as their principal. She congratulated students and wished them good luck in their future endeavors. The program was concluded with the closing prayers of Fr. Manoug Markarian who, prior to delivering his benediction, read the congratulatory message by His Eminence Archbi- shop Hovnan Derderian, Primate of the Armenian Church Western Diocese. After the recessional, students, teachers, parents and guests all min- gled in the hall and courtyard for cof- fee and treats, exchanging well wishes and photo taking. No, that doesnt say it all: Her voice is one of the most engaging and congenial in the world today. Her first offering, Ravels Kaddisch, demonstrated, to this listener at least, that no matter how happy a memory you may cherish of a singer of Bayrakdarians quality, memory cant compare to the experience of hearing her live. Next she offered two gorgeous songs by the 18th-century Armenian minstrel Sayat Nova, but the real highlight of the evening was a set of songs by Serouj Kradjian to texts by the 13th-century female troubadour, Ysabelle. They are in Arabic, Hebrew, Occitan and English. Although the music has a certain eastern Mediterranean flavour, it is also vigorously contemporary. Bayrakdaryan, con- ductor Anne Manson and the orchestra delivered a passionate and irresistible account of the score. A Kosher Lecture... Contd from page 9 Erdogan faced Mr. Peres in Davos, Switzerland and walked away from a dispute shouting in the Israeli presi- dents face that his country was com- mitting genocide against Palestinians. The Armenian victims insulted by Mr. Peres were vindicated inadvertently by the Turkish leader. Mr. Foxman and his ilk maintain that holding the Armenian Genocide or any other mass murder on the level of the Holocaust will chip away the political capital of the Holocaust. However, unless the Jewish Holocaust and the genocides perpetrated against Armenians, Cambodians and Rwandans, among an unfortunately long list, are treated as integral dimen- sions of the universal pain, they will be devalued as moral and historical cases. We are certain that Prof. Richard Hovannisian will drive the point to his Jewish audience, as have other Genocide scholars, including Vahakn Dadrian, Taner Akam, Robert Melson and others have done. In the meantime, we hope Professor Hovannisian will enjoy his well- deserved Kosher Armenian Dinner.
