- From human civilization, the universe, the wild to the sea, the record of life-and-death of exploration and expedition- Humanity’s noble endeavors and passion; recording the moment of phenomenal discovery

“National Geographic Photo Exhibition: WORLD OF MYSTERY” will showcase the explorers of unknown worlds, the mystery of civilization and nature, and the glory of discovery at M家, Daegu MBC’s exhibition hall, from Mar. 25th (Fri) to June 12th (Sun).

It has been three years since the last photo exhibition in 2013. Titled WORLD OF MYSTERY, this new exhibition showcases life-risking exploration and expeditions into civilizations, unknown worlds, the universe and the ocean, all documented through photos, videos and special exhibits.2013년에 이어 3년 만에 새롭게 선보이는 이번 전시는 <미지의 탐사 그리고 발견(WORLD OF MYSTERY)>이라는 부제로, 인류가 걸어온 문명과 오지, 우주와 해양에 이르기까지 시간과 장소에 상관없이 목숨을 건 탐험과 탐사에 관한 다양한 기록을 사진과 영상, 특별한 전시품들을 통해 공개한다.

While previous National Geographic exhibitions de-livered public messages on environment issues and stressed the importance of coexisting with nature, WORLD OF MYSTERY will be an intellectual and edu-cational exhibition, where you can see the mystery of nature and civilization and the long history of the world through these expeditions.

The exhibition consists of six sections. In Section 1, you can see the history of National Geographic, which has supported explorers and scientist from all over the world. In Sections 2-5, you can observe exploration and discoveries of ancient civilizations, the universe, the wild, and the water world. There is a Special Section, which is about the Deep Sea Challenger, which James Cameron, a National Geographic deep-sea explorer and film maker of ‘Titanic’ and ‘Avatar’, completed a solo-dive to the deepest part of the Mariana Trench.<내셔널 지오그래픽展 미지의 탐사 그리고 발견>은 총 5개의 관과 특별관으로 구성된다.

The exhibition displays more than photos; it includes a replica of the submarine which was specially produced for the Deep Sea Challenger, an actual submarine which Sylvia Earle, a marine biologist and National Geographic explorer-in-resi-dence with the nickname of “Her Deepness”, used for her deep-sea research, a camera which pho-tographers used in from 1920s to 1940s, a Hominin skull cast, and Olmec colossal heads.

Baccarat is the most popular game. At peak hours, all sixteen downstairs tables are filled with players, but even at the slowest times (the casino is open 24/7), you will always find at least one baccarat table open. The minimum bet is KRW10,000. To get you started, look for the KRW10,000 coupon in the Daegu Compass. To add to the fun, some of the baccarat tables are “squeezable,” meaning you can peak at the sides of the cards to increase the thrill. The casino also started hosting a monthly tourna-ment, usually on the last Sunday of every month (but check first to confirm the date), where the first prize can reach over ten million won. This tournament is hosted in the VIP room, a room with a beautiful in-terior and stellar service, normally reserved for the VIP high rollers.

Next in the table games are blackjack and roulette. While blackjack starts at KRW10,000, you can place a bet at the roulette table for as low as KRW2,500. The payouts are the same as any other casino, but the promotions offered by the Daegu Casino sweeten the deal: when you come in, the casino will give you a scratch-off ticket that may be good for KRW30,000 on top of a KRW30,000 bet at a table game. The casino also has a mileage point system whereby you get money back on your account ev-ery time you buy chips—regardless of whether you win or lose—which are redeemable anytime. New promotions are offered regularly, such as the “bring a friend” promotion (which gets you free vouchers and chips), so make sure you check everything out when you visit.

Page 12: APRIL 2016 THE DAEGU COMPASS

Then of course, there are the slot machines. There are a variety of machines, each with its own fun twist. You can play for as low as KRW10 for your chance to hit the jackpot, which can reach over ten million won.

For those who enjoy a game with a bit more skill and less luck, the poker room hosts a KRW1,000/KRW2,000 no limit Texas Hold’em cash game, as well as weekly Sunday tournaments (KRW50,000 buy-in). They also have special promotions, such as KRW 50,000 worth of free chips on top of your buy-in if you come between 2 and 2:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

If all of this still doesn’t have you convinced that you can have a great time without breaking the bank, the casino provides free drinks and free food for all players of any game. During the week, you can order tradition-al Korean food and other items from a menu for com-pletely free, and on the weekend, you can help yourself to the buffet. All you are spending is your bets—which can be quite low—for a chance of winning a lot of money.

To take advantage of all of the promotions, make sure you sign up for a membership card when you go there. It is free, and all you need is a valid picture ID (ARC or passport). To find out about all of these events and get more information about the promotions and games, check out the casino’s website (http://www.daegucasino.com/), or call 053-222-3355.

The casino is located in the Inter-Burgo Hotel. There are two Inter-Burgo Hotels in Daegu, so make sure you go to the one in Manchon-Dong. You can also get there by bus. Many buses will take you to the Mangu-Dong Park bus stop, which is a three-minute walk away from the hotel.

Whispers about a hidden gem started not long ago in the foodie community based in Daegu and it has been getting louder recently. A new restaurant located above the What BBQ restaurant has been turning heads and I was curious as to find out what all the fuss was about. Armed with an empty belly and a trusty sidekick/editor in chief, I eagerly sought out to see why everyone was raving about this place. (HEAVY SPOILER ALERT) I loved it and moments after leaving the restaurant was already plotting my return to further gorge myself!

The Rooftop already stands out from the rest of the restaurants on BBQ/Meat Alley due to it offering an alternative to the various BBQ places that occupy this area. Being located above What BBQ also makes it relatively easy to locate as well. A little background on the owner, Rose Kyunghwa Kim trained in Australia at Le Cordon Bleu and gained experience at other restau-rants for a few years before returning to Daegu and

opening her own place. The melding of European and Australian cuisine honestly gives The Rooftop a fresh-ness that other ‘European’ style restaurants should aspire to match.

When entering The Rooftop for the first time, I smelt a lovely aroma of both flowers and herbs before I was sat at a table. Rose was very welcoming as a host and seemed very keen for any input/feedback to help im-prove even further (always a good sign!). The restau-rant had a light, open and welcoming continental feel inside that reminded me of bistros from back home. We had the choice of sitting indoors or outside on the roof-top. Sadly it was too cold for that when we visited, but with spring getting warmer and summer on the horizon I can see that spot becoming very popular in the future.

Page 15: APRIL 2016 THE DAEGU COMPASS

-continued on p16-

Upon receiving our menus, I was impressed by their presentation and focus on doing certain dishes, show-ing the importance of quality over quantity. The menu also included wine/beer pitchers and even some more expensive wines for anyone looking to impress that special someone on a date. We ordered a variety of dishes including salads, pasta, sirloin steak, fish and chips, mac n cheese and each had a glass of red san-gria.

The sangria isn’t something I see in many bars/restau-rants in Daegu. The flavor was fresh and light, so it didn’t overpower the flavor of any of our dishes.

For our salads we shared a Greek salad and a Chicken Caesar salad between us. After taking one bite I no-ticed how crisp and fresh the ingredients tasted. The Greek salad was quite zesty and if you find yourself in need of a Feta boost this will be right up your alley. My personal favorite was the Chicken Caesar salad, it had juicy slices of chicken breast with a light amount of honey mustard on them and it didn’t clash with the Caesar sauce at all. Add in the crunchy croutons and you have a lovely salad. In fact you could easily order the Chicken Caesar salad as your main dish. My part-ner in crime also enjoyed the Ricotta Cheese salad that included plenty of high-quality cheese and a little bit of pasta underneath.

Now for our mains; one theme carried through all of our dishes, flavors complimenting each other. The first main that we devoured was the Sirloin Steak (cooked medium), it came with a red wine sauce that had cream sauce poured on top of it. These flavors blended well together with the cream sauce being a real highlight. The dish also came with a light and fluffy mash, as well as moreish fried carrot ribbons.

The next dish was of significant importance to me, an Englishman who is fanatical about his Fish and Chips. I have been disappointed by many places in Korea that have served me awful imitations, but thank goodness Rose knows exactly what she’s doing! The fish is not Cod or Haddock, but is a great alternative. There are 3 pieces of fish with a light and crispy batter, so sharing is an option…..if you want to. The tartar sauce is also lovely.

Our final main dish was a new item to the menu, the Spaghetti Meatball. On this plate there is one giant mixed beef/pork meatball with cheddar and mozzarella stuffed inside. The meatball was moist and juicy with the melted cheese inside enhancing the flavor even further. My mouth actually watered after cutting the meatball in half. The sauce with this meal was a spicy tomato sauce with a decent amount of heat, but noth-ing overwhelming.

To add to our gluttony we also tried a side dish of macaroni and cheese that was plentiful and had a nice homemade feel to it. In fact I would say a lot of the por-tion sizes are quite generous.

To sum up my experience, I think that The Rooftop is a phenomenal dining experience and with the support of the community we should do all we can to keep this little gem going……In fact, why are you still reading this? Put this down and go there now! Before it gets fully booked up!

If it is your first time to Korea, or maybe even your first time out of the country, you know it can be intimidating to land in a new place. And if you are here to take advantage of the medical services that Daegu provides, it may be even more nerve-racking. Any appointments relating to our health can be stressful to begin with and now, you are also in a foreign country with a foreign language. Even the simplest of things like, “how will you get to the appointment?” may be something that causes some anxiety. The Daegu Medical Tourism group understands this, and they are offering a service to help check one of these difficult parts off your list.

The Daegu Medical Tourism group, in conjunction with the Daegu Metropolitan City, is offering the first medical tourism taxi service in Korea. All foreigners are invited to use this service regardless of destination or purpose. Although mainly being promoted for medical tourists, all are welcome to use these taxis. Sometimes it can be daunting or confusing to use a taxi due to language barrier or other issues. For example, finding or booking a taxi early in the morning. Maybe you may feel deterred from calling a cab because you are not confident in your Korean speaking skills. This service will eliminate such difficulties.

On February 17th of this year, the Daegu Metropolitan government had an appointment ceremony to help launch the “Daegu Medical Tourism Taxi” with the drivers of this taxi service. There are a number of benefits to these taxis. You can book a taxi any time you would like, regardless of time or day. Each of these drivers has special qualifications. They have had a clean driving record—no accidents—for ten years, and have been driving for at least 30 years. In addition, the drivers of these cabs can speak basic level of certain languages like English and Japanese. Daegu City Hall also offers regular English classes for them to take. If you are still concerned about the language barrier, you can request an interpreter to join as well. They offer Japanese, Chinese, and English. These interpreters are selected from a pool in the medical tourism committee and are happy to help you get around.

Currently there are six large-sized taxis, about the size of a van. There will also be 27 normal car-sized taxis in the future. I had the pleasure of riding in one of these taxis and there are a number of advantages to them. When I first got to the taxi, the driver was waiting outside to greet me and help me into the cab. He was friendly and could understand some English which was helpful. When I got in, I thought I had entered a kind of limousine. They are quite spacious—you can fit all your luggage easily. The seats are bigger and more comfortable than a regular taxi and can accommodate a total of ten passengers. My seat was so comfortable.

Page 21: APRIL 2016 THE DAEGU COMPASS

DAEGU COMPASS APRIL 2016 21

In fact, I would have taken a nap if it was a long ride—the driver said it was possible to go all the way to Incheon Airport if I wanted. There is also a TV inside for your entertainment and medical tour brochures to get more information. My driver mentioned that many passengers prefer this cab because it is so spacious and higher off the ground, making for a great view of the city when looking out the window. I certainly agree with that. You can easily see what’s happening outside from these seats, or close the curtains if you’d rather have some quiet. The driver was eager to answer any questions and help me out of the cab when leaving. Sometimes when taking a cab, it is hard to find a driver that you like. He said with this company, if you really like your driver, you can request to have the same one in the future. It was definitely not your average taxi experience and I look forward to using it again.

You may be thinking, “that sounds great, but what will it cost me?” The basic starting cost of using these taxis is only 4,000 won. After that, the price is the same with a regular cab. At night, they charge 20% more. In addition, if you are looking to travel a far distance, for example from another city or even Incheon Airport, you can do that. You will have a fixed rate instead of meter. It will be much more comfortable and convenient than other travel options, and the price doesn’t change based on the number of passengers.

Excited about this great opportunity? Here’s how to take advantage of all these taxis have to offer. You can call the Daegu Medical Tourism Promotion Committee at (053-253-1564) to get more information or request a taxi. Happy travel!

It’s been a long week, you’re tired, and you just want to relax. Sometimes YouTube just won’t cut it. Sometimes a day at the spa is the only thing that will get your body back to its ole self. Don’t worry, CocoRico has got your back—literally and figuratively.

Owned and operated by Alice Jeon, Doctor of Health Education and Beauty Therapist, this salon has every-thing you are looking for when it comes to your beauty care needs. Anything from nails and eyelashes, to tan-ning, waxing, skin and body services, CocoRico will do it all. And with 12 years of experience in the field, Alice Jun knows what she’s doing.

Walking into CocoRico, I didn’t know what to expect. Many people agree, entering a place for the first time where you will have something done to your body can be a little nerve-racking. You may not be able to com-municate well enough about what and how you would like something done. This can be difficult alone, not to mention the added language barrier living in Korea. I was instantly put at ease when Ms. Jeon greeted me in English and invited me over for a quick consultation. She poured me some tea and discussed my health and health habits and what I would like to achieve from the visit. She made me feel completely comfortable which was a fantastic way to start the visit.

I decided on a facial massage and it was an excellent experience. The room I was brought to was dark with soothing music in the background and a heated, com-fortable table to lay on. This helped me to fully relax as sometimes places have cold rooms or uncomfortable beds making it more difficult to ease muscles. The smell of the oils added to the relaxing nature of the room. The duration of the facial was one hour long complete with essential oils, a deep cleansing mask, and an upper body massage. It was extremely rejuve-nating and I felt like a new person when it was over.

With my fresh face and tingling skin, I sat down again with Ms. Jeon to discuss the experience. She ex-plained to me what each part of the process was and

how it was helpful to my skin in particular. She used everything from different oils, creams, fruit acid to re-move dead skin, sulfur to reduce inflammation and pre-vent bacteria, collagen extract, vitamin C, an ice mold consisting of tea tree oil, lavender, and chamomile, among other products. She was careful to only use products that would be safe for my skin and sensitivity, as each person’s skin is different. I truly appreciated this attention to detail.

Ms. Jeon has great knowledge in skin care and is also a professor. She keeps up to date in caring for skin and uses top products from countries like France and Swit-zerland. She pays close attention to how foreigners in particular would like certain services done. For exam-ple, she offers a Swedish style massage versus a more deep-tissue massage if you would like, although you can elect to have either type. As stated before, she can speak English very well. In addition to this, Ms. Jeon also has a complete guide in English that explains all aspects of beauty care. How to prepare before coming in, what to expect during, how to take care for your body after, and home care advice. If you are someone new to these kinds of services, or simply want to have

a better understanding of how to take care of your skin, this is the place to come.

CocoRico’s main location opened in Suseong-gu in 2010 but since then branches have opened down-town, in Sangin, and in Yulha. You should make a reservation ahead of time to help ensure a quality experience. If you drive a car, there is free parking available to customers. I don’t often visit salons due to cost, but I can guarantee that this is money and time well-spent. The experience from start to finish was wonderful and Ms. Jeon does a superb job of making her clients feel valued and at ease. So hurry up and get relaxing!

Hannah Shelter lies up a winding road near Palgong-san. A first time visitor could easily miss it if they aren’t listening for the dogs barking. More than 300 dogs call Hannah Shelter home, and Aunt Hannah never turns an animal away.

Over two years ago, a gas explosion destroyed the original shelter, killing half the dogs and destroying their supplies. With the help of both Korean and foreign volunteers, they cobbled together the shelter that ex-ists today.2년하고도 조금 더 된 그 때, 가스 폭발 사고가 일어나 원래의 보호소가 없어졌다.

Foreigners may be surprised upon visiting. These are not like the shelters in North America or Europe. It is a field in the middle of farmland, with a couple of sheds

and tarps available for shelter. Some of the dogs are chained to old dog houses, or broken down cars. There is no veterinary help to spay or neuter the dogs, so the population continues to grow. This also means that heartworm, parasites, and other diseases are left un-treated. Many dogs fail to thrive in this environment.

Unfortunately, the shelter does not have much assis-tance. It is run by two older Korean woman-one of which is Aunt Hannah. They do their best to feed and care for the dogs. Rarely do they have the chance to leave the shelter. It is their life. The shelter receives no government support, and the shelter must rely on the kindness of others.

Page 27: APRIL 2016 THE DAEGU COMPASS

While the conditions are not optimal, the dogs are loving. Every time volunteers visit, they want to be held, pet, or walked. Many of these dogs are former pets that were sadly relinquished. The dogs miss human attention, and are happy to have a few quiet minutes sitting in a lap.

The shelter also welcomes charitable contribu-tions. Any day of the week, the shelter is open for donation drop offs. Every weekend, volunteers are welcome to come play, walk, and socialize the

dogs. Many animal lovers have donated food and blan-kets, but the shelter is always open to more generosity. Toys, treats, medication, blankets, and jackets for the dogs are much appreciated!

Don’t forget about the women who sacrifice their time and energy to care for the abandoned dogs of Daegu. The students and professors of Keimyung University sent a generous package, which included dried fruits and teas for Aunt Hannah last November. These little gestures mean the world to them.

Better still, if you are in a position to provide a loving home to the right dog, please stop by the shelter. Just remember, a dog is a lifetime commitment. They will enrich your lives if you are willing to invest in them.

All animal lovers are encouraged to come up to Han-nah Shelter and volunteer. It is such a great feeling to provide these dogs with some much needed affection. If you have any questions, please contact Hannah Shelter through our Facebook page. We look forward to seeing you there!

a NET pErSpECTIVE You may recall that I wrote an article discussing com-mon misconceptions about teaching English in Korea (http://wp.me/p5Ltkx-w). Now, I’d like to turn my focus to communication. Fostering effective communication at your school can make or break your experience. I have spoken with many teachers (Korean and foreign) and some administrators about the issues they’ve faced. I’d like to take a moment to share some of their stories – this article is from the NET perspective.

-6 months after starting at my first school I was told by my main coteacher that two others were unhappy with my classes. They never mentioned anything to me and pushed it all on my main coteachers, who felt ultra-awkward about it all.-첫번째 학교에서 일을 시작한 지 6개월 이후에, 담당선생님으로부터 다른 두 동료 선생님들이 제 수업에 불만족스러워 한다고 이야기를 들었습니다. This is an all-too-likely situation. Saving face is a HUGE deal in Korea (and plenty of other places) and direct confrontation is not common. Many coworkers may feel uncomfortable bringing any issues to you and may put off speaking with you until it is too late for you to do anything about it. Be aware that this may happen. I do recommend you sit down with each of your coworkers and explain that you really want to grow as a teacher and that you welcome any and all feedback, but don’t expect it to happen, especially as some people may view asking for help as a weakness.

Page 31: APRIL 2016 THE DAEGU COMPASS

DAEGU COMPASS APRIL 2016 31

-My second year there, I had a different main coteach-er who was so afraid of talking to the foreigner for more than 2 minutes that she would often just say yes to whatever I asked from her.-한국생활 2년차에 다른 담당 선생님을 만나게 되었습니다.

This happens to many NETs. Keep in mind that many teachers (at least in elementary schools) did NOT major in English. Many of them have not had any spe-cialized training in English and it may be their first time teaching the subject at all (much less with a native speaker). This is a very delicate time and you must approach this situation with the utmost sensitivity. You may get extremely frustrated (especially if they choose to teach the entire English class in Korean), but you want to help them get more comfortable with you, not scare them away from any future interactions.

-My first day with one of my classes when I first ar-rived in Korea, I had students write down questions they wanted to ask me. One of my students wrote down a handful of scribbles. When I showed the paper to my students sitting near the front and asked who wrote it, they pointed to the student. It turned out she had a mental disability. I didn’t learn this until after my class when my coteacher came up to me and said she’s retarded. Two things wrong with this, the continued use of this word over the years when I’ve corrected a number of teachers and not being told in advance of students that have mental or learning disabilities.-한국에 처음 도착해서 첫 날 수업했던 반 중에, 학생들에게 제게 하고 싶은 질문을 적어보라고 시켰습니다.

This is also a very common occurrence with all age groups. I can say that teachers are getting more spe-cialized training to work with students who are differ-ently-abled, but there is still an atmosphere of ignore what you don’t understand or what is too difficult to manage. There isn’t a lot you can do about this other than to prepare yourself to work with students on the autism spectrum, who have ADHD, learning disabilities and/or psychological issues - you may not get any help from your coteacher. You obviously won’t be an expert, but it may help you understand some of the basics.

From my brief experience, here are the three big-gest pieces of advice I can offer:

1.Meet with your co-teachers EARLY (discuss roles, responsibilities, strengths, weaknesses, classroom management, etc.).1.

2.If you have any questions or issues, make time to speak with your coteacher or main coteacher. When you have the talk, be courteous and respect-ful and work together to find a resolution. I had some issues with one of my coteachers and was very thankful that we took a walk together, dis-cussed what happened (and what went wrong), and made plans to avoid any issues in the future.2.

3.BE FLEXIBLE - Korean workplaces do NOT func-tion like they do in your home country. Also, your coteachers are NOT native speakers. It will take some time to get used to the work culture and to figure out the best way to communicate with your coworkers. It will happen, you just need to be open to the experience and not let the frustrations bog you down.3.

Please keep in mind that there is no way to completely avoid miscommunication at the workplace (at home OR abroad), but it is important to do your very best to com-municate honestly and respectfully.(고국에서든, 한국에서든) 직장에서 의사소통이 잘 되지 않는 경우를 완전히 피할 수 있는 방법은 없다는 것을 명심하세요. I plan to write 1-2 follow-up pieces, continuing the dis-cussion – both from the NET and Korean Teacher/Admin-istrator perspective. If you have a story you would like share, please contact me at [email protected].

hoW To SaVE $22,000 IN oNE yEar

Yes, you read that number right. And yes, that is how much we saved PER PERSON. I’ll spell it out one more time to avoid any confusion. We saved $22,000 US dollars EACH during one year of teaching in South Korea… Just over $44,000 between the two of us. And we could have saved more if we traveled less and didn’t eat so much. But hey, no regrets here!If you’re considering teaching English in South Korea, you already know the money is good. The promise of a free plane ticket and rent-free apartment are benefits enough to move across the world. Add to that a decent salary and a relatively low cost of living, and you have a surefire way to save a ton of money, right?Wrong. If you come to Korea expecting to double your bank ac-count but have no real budgeting plan, you won’t save any money. We watched many people arrive in Korea with dollar signs in their eyes, but halfway through the year they looked at their bank account only to realize they had saved hardly any money. But we’ve also had friends completely pay off their debt, or save up enough money to travel long-term. And we are pretty proud of the little “nest” we built in just one year that’s allowing us to travel the world and pay off student loans. PLEASE READ: We are not sharing this information to be boastful, but instead to answer the many questions we have received about how we afford to travel. Additionally, we hope this information is helpful to others who choose to teach English in South Korea with the goal of earning mon-ey along the way. We believe that with discipline, anyone can reach their saving goals. So how did we do it? How can you save $22,000 teaching in South Korea too? Keep reading for a breakdown of just

how much life in Korea will cost you, and how much you should expect to save. Then read on for some exclusive tips that helped us save money in South Korea, and we’ll even reward you with a FREE DOWNLOAD of the exact same spreadsheet that helped us stick to our budget. Are you ready? Okay, here we go...

how much will you earn teaching English in South Korea? We’ve had countless emails and Facebook messages from old friends and new readers all wondering the same thing… How can we afford to travel? We have lots of tips we’ll be sharing soon, but one of the biggest ways we were able to save money was by teaching in South Korea. So how much, exactly, did we earn? And how much were we able to save?Drumroll, please… Here come the numbers everyone is excited about. We have them all broken them down for you.(Please note: All figures are for ONE PERSON during ONE YEAR as an EPIK English teacher.)

Salary: 2,400,000 won per month ($2,143 USD*)Your salary, as with many things in Korea, depends on many things. EPIK salaries start at 2,200,000 won per month, but many teachers take home more. Your salary can be influenced by factors such as: previous teaching ex-perience, level of degree in university, number of schools you teach at, and location of your placement. Furthermore, teachers will receive a raise in salary for each year they renew their contract. So if you plan to stay in Korea a while, you can really roll in the dough!I had two years of previous teaching experience, and Ben taught at more than one school plus he has his Master’s degree, so each of us earned more than the starting salary.*The salary listed above is the average of both Ben’s and my salaries. Depending on your qualifications, your salary may be slightly higher or lower.further breakdown:previous Teaching Experience: If you have 2 or more years teaching experience, your starting salary will be 2,500,000 won per month. Note that you will need written proof, and your experience will need to meet certain requirements.Multiple Schools: Most of the EPIK teachers we know taught at more than one school. While this may seem over-whelming at first, it is actually a good thing! That’s right, you’ll earn an additional 100,000 won (about $89 USD*) per month. And if you are at more than 2 schools, you’ll rack up 150,000 won each month.rural placement: If you are placed in a rural region, you

Page 35: APRIL 2016 THE DAEGU COMPASS

DAEGU COMPASS APRIL 2016 35

will receive a stipend of 100,000 won per month. This is often necessary, as travel from the more remote towns can add up.

Entry allowance: 1-time payment of 300,000 won ($268 USD*)This is kind of a “get you started” bonus that you’ll receive as soon as you get to your city. Tip: It might be tempting to spend it all at once furnishing your apartment with cute coffee mugs and throw pillows, but try to only get the essentials – a few pots and pans, toilet paper, and all that fun stuff – and pocket the rest. If you’re lucky, the previous teacher will have left some items behind, so take advantage of that.Take a look at our South Korea packing list so that you are prepared when you arrive and don’t have to purchase too much to get on your feet.

flight allowance To and from Korea: Two 1-time payments of 1,300,000 won = 2,600,000 won total ($2,321 USD*)Your school pays for your way to and from Korea. Your en-try flight allowance will be paid to you in your first month’s pay, and your exit flight allowance will be given to you on your last month’s pay.

Tip: Stalk your flights and get the cheapest one possible. Your school will give you the same amount regardless of how much you pay for your flight. For example, our return flights to the US were just $430 (we booked our August flights in January), but we still received nearly $1,160 USD from our schools.

Severance: 1-time payment of 2,400,000 won or equivalent of 1-month’s salary ($2,143 USD*)If you successfully complete your 1-year contract, you will be given an additional month’s salary. So it’s like 13 months of pay for 12 months of work. Wahoo!

pension: 1-time payment of 2,600,000 won ($2,321 USD*) A portion of your monthly salary is deposited into the Korean National Pension system, and the government will match what you put in. You’ll receive this money about one month after you complete your contract.Note: Unfortunately, South African citizens are not eligible for this payment as this time.

Page 36: APRIL 2016 THE DAEGU COMPASS

http://www.daegucompass.com36 Teaching English in South Korea?

Extra IncomeThere are chances for you to earn extra income during the year if you choose. We only took advantage of a couple such opportunities, but certainly could have found more. Note: The following payments are for one person. Weekend English Camps: 1-time payment of 800,000 won ($714 USD*) Every year there are opportunities to do weekend, winter, or summer English camps. Ask your school or get in con-tact with you regional EPIK coordinator and request to be considered these extra money-making gigs.

EpIK life Video Contest Winner: 1-time payment of 500,000 won ($446 USD*) Each year, EPIK holds a competition for videos that show-case what life is like teaching in Korea. I submitted my video, and guess what?! I was selected as the grand prize winner! The reward? A cool 500,000 won. Try out your video editing skills, even if you are a novice like me... you might just surprise yourself! And keep a lookout for other contests hosted by EPIK throughout the year.

Total Income: 38,000,000 won ($33,929 USD*)This number is the total earnings of salary, entry allow-ance, flight allowances, severance and pension, as well as some additional money we earned.*All conversions use the average rate of 1,120 won = $1 USD (throughout August 2014 to August 2015)

how much will life in Korea cost?Okay, now that you know how much each of us earned over the course of the year, let’s talk expenses. How much did we spend exactly? Well lucky for you, we kept track of every single won!(All expenses below are monthly averages for ONE PER-SON)

housing: 0 won per month ($0 USD*)One of the biggest perks about teaching in Korea is that your school will pay your housing cost! See what a typical home looks like in a video tour of our Korean apartment.

Internet: 0 won per month ($0 USD*)Internet is also typically provided by your school.

bills: Electric, Gas, phone, and School lunches – 143,000 won per month ($128 USD*)Electric and gas: This cost will vary per month depending on how you use A/C, ondol floor heating (which we barely touched because it took 4 hours to heat our apartment), and your stove. We generally paid more in the hot summer months because we used our air conditioning. Gas and electric fluxuated from 20,000 won to 80,000 won, but the average was about 40,000 won per month ($36 USD*).phone: We both had phone plans through Olleh that each cost 38,000 won per month ($34 USD*).Tip #1: We rarely used minutes on our phone, and would have preferred to have a cheaper plan that had fewer min-utes. We learned that once you sign a contract it is very difficult to change until the contract’s end date.Tip #2: DO NOT sign up for a phone contract through The Arrival Store. Their plans are much more expensive than you will find elsewhere. Our advice is to wait until you move to your assigned city and go with your co-teacher to find a plan that works for you. And yes, you will be just fine without data during orientation!lunch: You will pay for lunches at school that you eat right alongside your students and co-teachers. Each school charges a different price and there’s not any negotiation. Unless you are a vegetarian, we highly recommend eating

Page 37: APRIL 2016 THE DAEGU COMPASS

DAEGU COMPASS APRIL 2016 37

your school’s lunch. It can be seen as disrespectful if you opt out. Plus, it’s much simpler than preparing your own lunch every day and is a way to try different Korean foods. The cost varied depending on the number of school days in the month, but the average cost was about 65,000 won per month ($58 USD*).

food: 175,000 won per month ($156 USD*)We cooked many of our own meals at home and some-times went out to eat with friends.Tip: To save money and time, we typically bought produce at a local supermarket and cooked one big meal on Sunday night. It usually lasted until the weekend when we often times ate out with friends.

Transportation: 40,000 won per month ($36 USD*)Korea is fairly cheap to travel around. This category in-cludes local bus and metro fees, taxis, and short trips to neighboring cities.Tip: Avoid taxis as much as possible, and get to know your town’s bus route instead. Many cities in Korea have a phone app with a map and timetables. The city bus may take a bit longer, but is far less expensive.

Entertainment: 95,000 won per month ($85 USD*)Living in Korea is tons of fun! We bundled entrance fees, movie tickets, fancy dinners, coffee dates, bingsu cravings, karaoke, nights out at bars, and any alcohol purchases into our entertainments expenses.Tip: Tons of coffee shops line just about every street in Korea, and it’s tempting to go several times a week. Try to limit yourself or brew your coffee at home, because a cup o’ joe is not cheap in this country.

Travel within Korea: 170,000 won per month ($152 USD*)We traveled a ton. We actually went through our calendar as found that we traveled 67% of the weekends we lived in Korea. That’s 35 weekends! (Yeah, Ben is an Excel nerd!) From bare-hand fishing in Pyeong Chang, exploring sunny Busan, nights out in Seoul, and reveling in the island beau-ty of Jeju, we saw a lot of the country.

Travel outside of Korea: total of 3,472,000 won ($3,100 USD*)While living in Korea, we visited 3 other countries. We trav-eled on a budget, though we had some vacation splurges here and there. You can check out the detailed budget breakdowns for each of our trips to thePhilippines, Japan, and Indonesia.

Note: International flights to these destinations are includ-ed in this category and totaled $1,094 USD.

Miscellaneous: 50,000 won per month ($45 USD*)There will always be those expenses that you just can’t plan for, such as random school activity fees or a co-work-er’s wedding gift. We also had some purchases that don’t fit into any other category like clothes, home supplies and presents.

flights to and from Korea: 1-time payment of 1,545,600 won ($1380 USD*)Our flights TO Korea (in August) were $950 USD, and our flights BACK HOME to the US (in August) were $430 USD.Note: If you are going through EPIK, you likely won’t have much time to research flights before purchasing, and like us, you’ll end up paying a little more than you should. The $1,300 flight allowance is generous though, and hopefully your ticket will be less than that. For your return flight, start researching 10 months before you plan on leaving for the best deals. In January, we found a flight from Seoul to Min-neapolis for $430 total which we just couldn’t pass up!

Student loans: $0...sorta...What about student loans? Maybe you’re lucky and don’t have any debt from attending university (in which case, I’m super jealous!). But if you’re like us, and have lots of student loans to pay, don’t forget to include your monthly payment in your budget. We worked really hard to save enough money at our jobs back at home to cover our loan payments for the entire year. That is why our loan pay-ments are not included in this calculation.

Total Expenses for the year: 13,093,600 won ($11,691 USD*)This number includes monthly bills, food, transportation, entertainment, travel within Korea, travel outside of Korea, miscellaneous cost and flights to and from Korea.

bottom line: Total Profit for the Year (38,000,000 won) minus Total Ex-penses (13,093,600 won) = 24,906,400 won...that’s equivalent to roughly $22,238 USD PER PERSON!!!*All conversions use the average rate of 1,120 won = $1 USD (throughout August 2014 to August 2015)

rEaD MorE!!! Now that you have all the numbers, con-tinue reading for some exclusive tips and tricks that helped us save $22,000 in one year!

After completing the first steps into the highly addictive (read: expensive) world of scuba diving, you can start to specialize. Keep in mind that the areas of interest and specialization vary greatly. Divers can tailor their studies to learn everything about the sciences of the underwater environment or they can specialize in the skills that will allow them to go further than most divers, using different equipment to meet certain needs. One thing that happens to most divers is that they start to become conscience about the environment (if they weren’t before), so while not every diver can name every known species of nudibranch by their scientific name, many of them will know the common name for many of the fish they see. Any diver worthy of working gear will be angered by irresponsible people destroying coral or harassing any other marine life. Any diver worthy of working gear

Once you have chosen to continue your education in scuba diving, you can elect to stay with the same agency or change agencies; the non-professional levels have fairly good reci-procity. PADI calls the next full step the Advanced Open Wa-ter (AOW) and SSI’s calls theirs the Advanced Adventurer. This second step allows you to try different types of special-ties without doing a full course. These two courses consist of five dives, each having a different concentration/specialty for each dive. Both of these courses provides divers with the option of continuing to complete the full specialty.

Page 39: APRIL 2016 THE DAEGU COMPASS

DAEGU COMPASS APRIL 2016 39

The PADI AOW certification extends your dive limits from 18m to 30m, which can open many more dive sites avail-able around the world. You are able to begin and com-plete your AOW directly after finishing your Open Water Diver certification. I personally would recommend trying to negotiate a deal to complete both AOW and Enriched Air Diver together, as this can be highly beneficial when doing deeper repetitive dives.PADI의 AOW 자격증은 잠수의 한계를18m에서 30m로 늘려준다.

After becoming an advanced diver, your education pipe-line can span upwards working towards the professional level, or outwards, collecting different specialty ratings and working towards the level of Master Scuba Diver (which only means that you have paid for five specialties).

-continued on p40-

Page 40: APRIL 2016 THE DAEGU COMPASS

http://www.daegucompass.com40 So You Want To Learn How To Scuba Dive Part 2

Working towards the professional level, you will begin to have concern for other divers, rather than just yourself and your buddy. You will need to complete an Emergency First Responder course either with a scuba diving agency or with another recognized group like the Red Cross. Once that is complete you can move on to what PADI calls a Rescue Diver. A Rescue Diver is still not at the professional level of diving, but is able to be effective in the event that something goes wrong with certain situations in the environment sur-rounding scuba diving.

Once you finish your Rescue Diver, which is highly recom-mended, as even dive professionals get into trouble some-times or have a delayed response, you might look for your next certification (Divemaster). Perhaps you want to stay out of the professional diving world and pursue specialties and a Master Scuba Diver certification. Or, maybe you are done with certifications at this point in diving and just want to dive to enjoy the sport and gain more experience. No matter how you might feel about certifications, the fact is that an Advanced Open Water Diver with 500 dives versus a Dive-master with 60 dives is probably going to be a better diver, although some people never learn to improve.

There is one more path and a much more expensive one, Technical Diving. Technical Diving opens up a great deal more that you can do while underwater. While recreational scuba diving limits are 40m, (it is very safe to complete dives to this depth using compressed air (21% O2, 79% N)), technical diving extends the range to much deeper depths and for much longer. Technical divers often carry 3 or more tanks of various gases, ranging from pure O2 to hypoxic mixes (with helium blended in to lower the feeling of being drunk (nitrogen narcosis)).

Currently the world recorder holder for the deepest scuba dive is Ahmed Gabr, who completed a 332.35m dive with a 12-minute decent time and 15-hour accent time. This type of scuba diving becomes very specific and scientific. You have to understand why things happen, to the best of our

current knowledge, in order to solve problems underwater; there might not be anyone who can help you and going straight to the surface isn’t always a good option.

There is a plethora of decisions to make when it comes to diving; from where you want to go to what do you want to see. Tailor your diving education to your interests, because while having 50 different certifications might sound like a good idea, it may not be necessary to do the type of diving you really want.

“During the three weeks I spent wandering through post-card perfect scenes of bustling markets, glittering pagodas and faded British hill stations I found it hard to believe I was traveling through a country that has one of the worst records for human rights abuse in the world. To me, this is the most staggering thing about Burma: that the oppres-sion of an entire nation of some 50 million people can be completely hidden from view.”Emma Larkin, Finding George Orwell in Burma

The changes I witnessed in Korea between 1973, when I arrived there as a Peace Corps Volunteer, and1988, when I returned for the Summer Olympics, were nothing less than astounding. Myanmar may be on an even faster track.

The magic that is Myanmar is easily accessible from South Korea and the rest of Northern Asia. You can jumpstart your trip with a flight from Inchon or Busan. We flew to Bangkok and then went on to Mandalay. It’s from that city, or the capital, Yangon, where most people launch their Myanmar adventures. Capture the essence of Myanmar before Starbucks arrives. Here are 11 surprising things about the country formerly known as Burma:여기 이전에 버마라고 알려진 나라에 대해 놀라운 사실 11가지가 있다.

1. The infamous dictatorship here is, for all practical purposes, invisible to routine travelers. Other than a few propaganda paperbacks on our night stand in one hotel, the military government’s presence to tourists has largely receded into the background. To be sure, everyone here

Page 43: APRIL 2016 THE DAEGU COMPASS

DAEGU COMPASS APRIL 2016 43

knows people who have served in prison. Myanmar and North Korea share common histories of cruelty and op-pression. But with the recent open elections, Myanmar’s military leaders have apparently decided to take a new path. The air here is filled with a cautious optimism.1.

2. International tourism and business is evident every-where here and is already taking off. Planes are filled with the likes of LNG deal-makers and NGO staffers. Tourists abound from Germany, Italy, France, other parts of Europe and the U.S. From Asia, Koreans and Japanese arrive in large groups. Building cranes dot the skyline, especially in Yangon, where several KFC’s recently opened. 2.

3. ATM’s are now accessible nearly everywhere you might go as a tourist. Yes, you will run into “out of order”signs on some machines, but it is generally easy to get access to your funds. 3.

4. U.S. dollars are no longer required! It was routinely suggested that you need to bring clean, crisp unfolded US dollars when you travel to Myanmar. While it is always smart to have back-up currency, it is no longer obligatory. Yes, dollars are nice to have, but you can access and use the local currency everywhere.4.

5. Everyone in Myanmar is courteous and friendly. The rest of Asia (and the West) can learn a lot about courtesy and “service with a smile” from the people of Myanmar. One surprising and effective practice we found throughout the

Page 44: APRIL 2016 THE DAEGU COMPASS

http://www.daegucompass.com44 Myanmar

country was that nearly every waitperson repeated our order before handing it off to the kitchen.5. 6. Though sometimes intermittent and frustratingly slow, the Internet is available in most hotels and in many restaurants and other establishments. We found the best reception in hotel lobbies. It is also easy to buy mobile sim cards thanks to two large foreign service providers from Saudi and Norway. The national service provider, MPT, is partnering with Japan to deliver services.6.

7. Meals can be had anywhere for just a few bucks. The food, a wonderful mélange of native dishes, Chinese and Thai culinary delights, is consistently delicious and inex-pensive. One of our more expensive dinners (there were two of us) came to $19 (including tip). We had four (4) cocktails, shared a soup and had large plates of chicken fried rice, fresh vegetables in oyster sauce, and a mixed grille seafood plate. Oh yes, there was a shrimp appetizer too.7.

8. Myanmar is a Baptist country! Well, in a sense. Myan-mar is home to the world’s third largest Baptist population. That’s in addition to the ubiquitous stupas and Buddhist temples that dot the country--which is 89% Buddhist over-all.8.

9. Myanmar is about to go democratic. Well, fingers crossed on that one. But Noble Peace Prize recipient Aung San Suu Kyi is expected to lead the NLD (National League for Democracy) Party’s transition to power in April, 2016.

There is universal support and optimism here for her lead-ership. Recently, her party called for all citizens to go out and reduce the litter in their streets and communities. The next day millions of people heeded the call, including sol-diers who nominally opposed her party’s coming to power.9. 10. Many people in Myanmar have “double names.” One flight attendant’s name was Ei Ei Tun. Our guides’ names included Sai Sai and Min Min. One of our waitresses in the beach town of Ngapali was So So. Her service was, in fact, much better than her appellation would suggest. Tradition-ally, Myanmar people do not have surnames. The spelling of their first names tells others what day of the week they were born on. 10. 11. The books “Animal Farm” and “1984” were largely based on Burma. Dogs are everywhere in Myanmar. And in the countryside, one sees pigs in nearly every nook and cranny. Dogs and pigs. It’s not coincidental then that dogs and pigs took over the farm in George Orwell’s Animal Farm. Orwell, who served with the British Imperial Police Force in Burma in the 1920’s, found his life transformed by his experience there. While many people believe his fa-mous works 1984 and Animal Farm were about England or Russia, they were strongly influenced by his experiences in Burma. 11.

Pleasant surprises are plentiful in Myanmar, a nation with more than 50 million smiling people hoping to finally reap the benefits of their richly endowed country. Myanmar is at the crossroads of the new world, where the two most populous countries, China and India, meet. It’s a place with countless Buddhist temples and an array of ethnic tribes and racial groups that are as diverse as the spices and tastes one finds here. Countless too, are the reasons to find your way to Myanmar.

baraziBarazi brings Japanese flair to Daegu. Barazi specializes in great Japanese cuisine. The restaurant feels like a home away from home. The soothing atmosphere provides customers a chance to relax with a cup of tea or some warm saki! The owner of Barazi is also an expert florist and can help arrange all your floral needs. Check the Bangcheon Market Compass Map on p56 for directions.Open & Close: 12:00-24:00 Tel: 010-4505-3396 Add: 13-16, Dalgubeoldaeto446-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu

GajokGajok means 'family' in Korean. That's the feeling you get when you step inside this wonderful Korean restaurant. Now, before you start to get a mental picture of the food it serves, just know that most of the meat is from the thigh and not the actual foot. What??? Yes, Gajok serves pig's foot for dinner.. But it's not like you are eating the hoof of the pig. In Korea, the foot and leg seems to go hand in hand, so it is similar to eating drumsticks (chicken legs). Enjoy! Check the Bangcheon Market Compass Map on p56 for directions.Open & Close: 13:00-01:00 Tel: 053-252-1481 Add: 7-16, Dalgubeoldaeto446-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu

He was well loved by the younger generations at the time for his soulful vocals and contemplative lyrics which deeply reflected the transition of Korea in late 80s. The area is quite isolated, taking you away from the busy and hectic city life, and dropping you into a surrealistic wonderland of art wheretime seems to be still for a moment.

Think of this artsy street as the “Insa-dong” of Daegu. As you walk along, you’ll see art galleries, studios and antique shops. You can stop in shops to buy art or just to browse through the incredible work of local artists. While you can enjoy exhibitions throughout the year, this street is particularly busy every October with the Bongsan Art Festival. Another highlight of this area is the Bongsan Culture and Art Hall where you can catch some performances and small-scale exhibitions.

The late Kim Kwang-suk, a famous Korean folk sing-er-songwriter who was popular in the 1980s, is still admired by many Korean music lovers today. You can definitely feel the love for the late artist as you stroll down the 350 meter long street that was designed to remember and honor him. The walls of this street are plastered with murals of Kim and you can hear his mu-sic faintly playing as you stroll along. On the weekends, you can visit a flea market here and there are also sev-eral famous restaurants in the area such as Daehan News, Two Bbul, Pic&iq (picnic), Percent, Barazi, Ga-jok and Laura’s Mill.
