Good friends are hard to come by so make sure you let them know from time to time how much they mean to you.

This is a sad month for the Compass. We are losing two very important people who have helped shape the Compass into what it is. Jimi Cusick and Rebecca Sanchez. Jimi started out with us from the very beginning. He contributed great photoshop how-to articles and eventually became our senior editor. He brought positive energy and a great personality. DAEGU PHOTO BIENNALE

Photography is now at the forefront of the international contemporary fine arts, offering new visions as a sig-nificant cultural medium. The City of Daegu is well-suited with its tradition of fine art photography, history,

and regional benefits and has since 2006 hosted the Daegu Photo Biennale with the aim of fostering Daegu as the center of photography in Asia. The Daegu Photo Biennale is a leading global photography festival that will help cultivate new generations of artistic cultures by fostering the local fine arts and enterprises associated with them.

Past Achievements and Future DirectionThe 3rd Daegu Photo Biennale in 2010 was recognized as the second best festival, according to the assessment of government-funded visual arts, that is, Biennales and exhibitions.

2012 Daegu Photo Biennale will endeavor to uphold its reputation for excellence by exhibit-ing select quality artwork by photographers who appreciate the new, as well as the mainstream discourses in international contemporary photog-raphy.

DAEGU PHOTO BIENNALE

‘Photographic!’

The 4th Daegu Photo Biennale presents a broad spectrum of contemporary photography in the 21st Century, and is entitled, "Photographic!" This year's exhibition aims to rethink the role and authenticity of photography per se and to highlight the pluralism of photography in various cultures as a visual language that affects other forms of art.

If the invention of photography in the 19th Century was about the surmounting of technological barri-ers, then photography in the 21st Century calls for overcoming the limitations of the concept that defines photography. In short, it is about dismantling the bar-rier between the notion of “photography as art” or “art as viewed through photography.”

Photography refers to the attention to something ‘Photographic’ which is free from any theoretical defi-nition. The exhibition title hints at the shift in focus to the experimental spirit of artists who are boldly challenging the limitations of conventional media and exploring new frontiers.

BOSEONG TEA FIELDS

Boseong Tea FieldsSpring is in the air. What better

way to spend “a weekend with the girls” than exploring the beau-tiful valley of Boseong’s Green Tea Fields; which is located on the south west coast of the Korean peninsula. It was established in 1957 with rolling hills reach-ing heights of 350 meters. The temperate climate of this region is ideal for green tea cultivation. To-day, Boseong accounts for 40% of Korea’s total green tea production. 봄이 완연하다. 한국의 남서쪽 해안에 위치한 보성 녹차밭의 아름다운 계곡을 탐험하는 것, 여자친구와 주말을 보내기 위해 이보다 더 좋은 방법이 있을까. 이곳은 1957년에 높이 350m의 완만한 언덕에 조성되었다. 이 지역의 온화한 기후는 녹차 재배에 이상적이다. 오늘날 보성 녹차 생산량은 한국에서 총 생산량의 40%를 차지한다.

We started our journey early that

morning leaving from Daegu. And after 5 hours and 2 buses later, we arrived at the tea fields on that sunny Saturday afternoon. We were all excited for what we would see. This place was like an emerald green blanket cascading over the hillsides, but it also gave you a sense of calm and peace. We saw a lot of young couples and families, too. Boseong was like an ongoing party and everyone was invited with kids running around happily

gulping every drop of their green tea ice cream as it slowly melted down their chins. So, of course we had to sample the ice cream, too. We sat under the shade eating the cool soft ice cream with each bite bursting with green tea flavor. After we devoured our ice cream, we slowly began our hike through a rocky trail shaded by large cedar trees whose branches fanned out like an umbrella shading us from the sun. We made our way through the wooden entrance that stood erect next to a stream that flowed alongside the hillside.

우리는 아침 일찍 대구를 떠났다. 5시간 동안 버스를 두 번 타고 화창한 토요일 오후, 우리는 보성 녹차 밭에 도착했다. 우리는 앞으로 보게 될 것에 대한 기대에 신났다. 이곳은 언덕 위에서 쏟아지는 에메랄드빛 담요 같았다. 또한 그 광경은 당신에게 차분하고 평화로운 느낌을 줄 것이다. 우리는 많은 커플과 가족도 보았다. 보성에는 마치 축제가 열리고 있는 것 같았다. 아이

들은 천천히 녹아 흐르는 녹차 아이스크림을 행복하게 먹으며 주변을 뛰어다니며 놀았다. 마치 이곳에 축제가 열려 모든 이들이 초대 받은 것처럼. 물론 우리도 아이스크림을 맛보았다. 우리는 한입 베어 먹을 때마다 녹차 향이 퍼지는 시원하고 부드러운 맛을 느끼며 그늘 아래에 쉬었다. 아이스크림을 먹은 후, 우산처럼 펼쳐진 큰 향나무 가로수가 만들어준 그늘진 길을 천천히 걸었다. 우리는 언덕 경사면을 따라 흐르는 시내 뒤에 수직으로 서 있는 나무문에 들어섰다.

As we stood at the base of the hill, we saw what looked like thou-sands upon thousands of rows of green tea bushes. Each row care-fully spaced out just enough for you to walk through and capture great pictures with the greenery as your backdrop. Boseong has been

used as the setting for many mov-ies and TV miniseries in Korea.

언덕 기슭에 서있을 때, 우리는 수천 줄 위에 또 다른 수천 줄의 나무들이 있는 광경을 보았다. 각 줄은 당신이 걸을 수 있을 만큼의 공간이 있으며 푸름을 배경 삼아 좋은 사진을 얻을 수 있다. 보성 녹차 밭은 한국에서 많은 영화와 미니시리즈에 나왔다.

We gradually made our way up the wooden staircase with each step clicking away with our cameras. You would have thought it was New York fashion week the way we posed in front of every bush, tree, bench, or whatever back-ground we could find. Flowers were adorned everywhere as if a wedding were taking place that day. They say, “a picture can say a thousand words.” Well, the

pictures we took that day only said one word…breathtaking.

우리는 사진을 한장 한장 찍으며 나무 계단을 천천히 올라갔다. 나무, 의자 어떤 배경 앞에서 포즈를 취하든 그 풍경이 뉴욕 패션 위크와 같다고 여길지도 모른다. 마치 그날 결혼식이 열린 것처럼 가는 곳마다 꽃이 반겼다. 한 장의 사진이 천 마디의 말을 한다. 사진은 한 마디로 숨이 멎을 것만 같다.

As we continued onward, we saw adjummas (elder Korean women) hard at work harvesting the green tea leaves from the bushes. Green tea leaves are divided into catego-ries based on when the leaves are picked depending on the season and weather conditions. The first leaves picked in season are called

ujeon, the second is called gogu, followed by sejak and jungak. Ujeon is considered the highest quality amongst the types of green tea and is the most fragrant.

우리는 앞으로 계속 지나가서 녹차잎을 열심히 수확하는 사람들을 보았다. 녹차잎은 수확된 계절과 날씨 조건에 따라 분류한다. 그 계절에 처음 딴 잎을 우전이라 부르고, 두 번째로 딴 잎은 곡우, 그 다음은 세작과 중작이다. 우전은 녹차잎 종류 중에서 가장 질이 좋고 향기가 가장 많다.

We continued our hike until we reached the top of the hill. The hike through the fields takes around one to two hours, depend-ing upon how often you stop for pictures and to admire the view. And what a view it was. The sight from the top of the hill was incred-ible. I would describe it as looking at a painting created by Mother Nature. The landscape was a cross between Monet’s The Water Lily Pond (1899) and a Bob Ross painting, with each tree showing a different shade of the rainbow. After taking a few moments to enjoy the view, we began making our way down the hill.

우리는 언덕 정상에 도달할 때까지 계속 걸었다. 들판을 가로지르는 하이킹은 당신이 사진 찍기 위해 얼마나 멈추고 경치를 즐기는가에 따라 한 두 시간 정도 걸린다. 얼마나 아름다운 풍경인지. 언덕 위에서의 광경은 믿을 수 없을 정도로 아름다웠다. 나는 이 광경을 자연의 어머니가 창조한 그림이라고 표현하고 싶다. 그 풍경화는 무지개의 다른 명암을 보여주는 나무를 그린 밥 로스 그림과 모네의 '수련 연못'이 교차한다. 우리는 잠깐 풍경을 감상한 후에, 언덕을 내려가기 시작했다.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way towards the gift store and the coffee shop. When traveling, there is always a gift store right before you leave. Of course, most of the trinkets sold there were green tea related, from the various types of green teas, chocolates, cookies, and tea sets available for purchase. Naturally, most of us walked away with some sort of souvenir. I, myself, walked away with green tea chocolates and cookies. I figured the teachers at my school would enjoy them. This trip was awesome in every sense of the word. With not only the exotic scenery of slanted slopes of green tea fields, but also the taste and scent, and the place has many unique attractions.

날이 저물어 갈 때, 우리는 기념품 가게와 커피숍으로 갔다. 여행할 때 기념품 가게는 항상 당신이 떠나기 직전에 있다. 물론 대부분 녹차와 관련된 값싼 장신구를 파는데, 다양한 종류의 녹차와 초콜릿, 쿠키, 그리고 차 세트를 살 수 있다. 자연스럽게도 우리 대부분이 몇 개의 기념품을 쥐고 돌아갔다. 나는 녹차 초콜릿과 쿠키를 구입했다. 나는 우

리 학교 선생님들이 그것들을 좋아하는걸 알게 됐다. 이번 여행은 표현할 수 있는 모든 말을 동원해서 최고였다. 녹차밭의 기울어진 비탈의 이국적인 풍경뿐만 아니라 맛과 향기와 함께 그 곳은 매우 특별한 매력을 가지고 있다.

After a nice day exploring the tea fields, we decided to head to Yulpo Beach where we stayed for the night. Yulpo Beach is just a 10 minute bus ride from the tea plantation, making for a conveneint place to stop by while in the area. It’s a small fishing town that gets heavy foot traffic from tourists visiting the nearby tea fields. We stayed at a reasonably priced minbak (guest house). Our rooms were on the top floor; which provided an awesome view of the beach. There’s not a lot to do in Yulpo with respect to touristy activities, but there is a nice sauna to visit. The sauna is reason-ably priced and incredibly well located. It was just a short walk from our minbak. They have green tea and ice water baths. The walls are tub-to-ceiling glass, so you can steam away while staring out at the receding tide. It’s very relaxing. Not too far from the sauna was a shipyard of boats lined alongside the shelled filled beach.

녹차밭을 돌아본 그 날 이후에 우리는 그날 밤을 보내기 위해 율포해변으로 가기로 결정했다. 율포해변은 녹차밭에서 버스 타고 10분 정도 거리에 있는데, 근처에서 머물기 편한 곳이다. 이곳은 녹차밭에 온 여행객들의 방문이 잦은 작은 어촌 마을이다. 우리는 꽤 괜찮은 가격의 민박에 묵었다. 우리 방은 제일 위층에 있어서 환상적인 해변 경치를 볼 수 있었다. 율포에는 여행객이 할 만한 게 많지 않다. 그러나 들려 볼 만한 좋은 사우나가 하나 있다. 그 사우나는 가격이 꽤 합리적이고 믿기 어려울 정도로 좋은 곳에 있다. 숙소에서 조금만 걸으면 되었다. 탕에서부터 천장까지 유리로 되어 있어서 썰물을 바라보면서 사우나를 즐길 수 있다. 아주 늘어지고 좋다. 사우나에서 멀리 떨어지지 않은 곳에 조개껍질로 뒤덮힌 해변을 따라 조선소가 있었다.

This area looked like a ghost town for boats with each one displaying stresses of the sea. We contin-ued our quiet walk along the shoreline. Seashells blanketed the sand like an open oyster bar. The soothing calm of the morning was serene as we made our way back. Our weekend exploration was coming to an end. We patiently waited on the bus

to take us back to Daegu. Boseong was like reading your favorite book, each page revealing magnificent wonder that captured your imagination to where you didn’t want to put the book down.

이곳은 바다의 긴장감을 보여주는 배들을 위한 귀신마을처럼 보인다. 우리는 계속 조용한 해안가를 따라 걸었다. 조개껍데기들은 굴 요리 음식점처럼 모래를 뒤덮었다. 우리는 돌아갈 때 아침에 가진 마음을 진정시켜 평안했다. 주말 여행은 끝을 향하고 있었다. 대구로 가기 위해 인내심을 가지고 버스를 기다렸다. 보성은 책을 내려 놓기 싫을 정도로 각각의 페이지가 당신의 상상력을 사로잡아, 그 경이로움을 드러내는 멋진 책을 읽는 것과 같다.

Boseong definitely lived up to its reputation of being a remarkable place to visit. Although we hesitated to leave, Boseong is a place we’ll never forget.

보성은 확실히 방문하기 훌륭한 장소라는 명성에 부응했다. 우리가 떠나길 망설일 만큼 보성은 결코 잊을 수 없는 곳이다.

DAEGU CITY TOUR

The Daegu City Tour is one of the best ways to explore

the city. It is very convenient with a tourism center located at the Dongdaegu train station. Not only can a person buy a ticket from the center, but they can also find helpful information about the city, such as the Daegu Food Tour. One helpful hint; do not take this tour during a holiday, because several museums and tourist attractions will be closed. Each tour is 5,000 won for adults and occurs from 10:00-17:00. On this tour, there are two convenient buses, either a regular bus or a double-decker bus. Regardless of the type of bus you choose, both have comfortable seats with air conditioning and tour guides. The city tour consists of different activity schedules which include a theme, a regular tour, and a Mt. Palgongsan course. The theme tour consists of different themes depending on the season. For instance, ceramics making, shooting, picking strawberries and the tea ceremony are just some of the choices. The regular tour consists of traveling to major tourist attractions in Daegu such as, Yongyeonsa Temple, Otgol village, and Hwawon Resort. The regular course takes people to dif-ferent areas in Daegu with a major focus on: the Downtown area, Dasa area, Hwawon area, Siji and Gachang areas and Mt. Biseulsan area. The Mt. Palgongsan tour course explores the tourist attrac-tions around the mountain.

wish to visit and can decide the time limit. The tour mainly consists of bus stops along a tour route with pick-up and drop-off times. So, people can easily navigate the tour. On the Mt. Palgongsan tour, it is helpful to wear good hiking shoes, if Gatbawi Stone Buddha is a desired sight.

This Buddha statue sits on a high mountain and is about a two hour hike, according to the city bus tour guide. If hiking is not your thing, there are still other wonderful at-tractions. Donghwasa Temple is a beautiful attraction. It was a tem-ple built during the Silla Dynasty with picturesque architecture and

scenery. Another good attraction is Palgongsan Donghwa Facilities Complex. These streets are filled with a variety of restaurants offer-ing local dishes like bibimbab and Korean beef or pork dishes. Addi-tionally, you can either hike or ride the Palgong sky line to the top of the mountain. On the hike, there are several temples along the way. However, the sky line is conve-nient and provides a good overall view of the city. On the top of the mountain, there is a restaurant and “Love Road.” It is pretty romantic, if you are bringing a special person with you. Moving right along, the tour also has a safety theme park with lots of fun, safety activities. It provides good education and practice for preparation of life emergencies, accidents, and natu-ral disasters. On the Palgongsan course, the hot spring hotel is the

Here’s an idea for a great day out in Daegu; Herb Hillz! It’s

the county’s largest eco-friendly theme park. Nestled at the base of the wonderful Mount Apsan, this adventure park will delight thrill seekers and nature enthusiasts alike.

나들이하기에 좋은 대구의 명소 '허브힐즈'를 소개하려 한다. 이곳은 대구에서 가장 친환경적인 테마파크이다. 앞산 자락에 위치한 테마파크는 스릴을 찾는 사람이나 자연을 좋아하는 사람을 만족시켜줄 것이다.

Basic entrance costs a respectable 7,000 won and this will allow you to roam the vast grounds. How-ever, for a little extra won, you can buy a full range of add-ons. Each season there are special events from sledding in winter, to herb picking in summer. The park is divided into several key areas each with its own unique and often pe-culiar charm which makes walking the grounds a delight in itself.

Coming through the main gates, the first area to your right is the

modest theme park. It’s nothing too extravagant in comparison to the nearby E-world, however, it does have the standard Viking ship, bumper cars and water balls. (In essence, huge inflated balls in a pool of water which essentially al-lows you to roll around inside of it and play in the water pool without getting wet)

As you climb further up the hill you will encounter the steaming waterfall. This water feature is particularly impressive and well worth a look. The upper area becomes completely engulfed in a smoky mist which seemingly rises from the slow moving waterfall. Magic you may say, if you some-how fail to notice the less than well disguised smoke machines. This particular space is a nice area to relax and has plenty of seating options where you can enjoy the frogs, fish and pelican bird statues – delightful.

Further up is the must see ‘Romantic Hill’. It would seem difficult to believe that anyone in-habiting this country longer than a few hours would not have noticed that Koreans are big into couple activities. Perhaps, nauseatingly so for the less romantically inclined! From couple wear to couple padlocks to couple phone charms - expect to see ample affectionate couples taking copious amounts of couple photographs. It’s an interesting place to saunter round and the mellow-dramatic opera music playing in the background completes the bizarrely enjoyable experience.

A little off to the side of Romantic Hill is Monkey Mountain. And it is exactly what it’s name implies, a mound with statues of monkeys and apes. Each sculpture repre-sents a different character, some famous and some not so much. The collection is very random with superwoman and superman ape statues amongst a range of others. It is intriguing to observe at the very least.

One of the most noteworthy features has to be the nature ad-venture area. For an extra 12,000 won you can embark on an eco friendly, high adrenaline, action packed escapade through the tree tops, Tarzan style. With a range of trails for visitors to enjoy, some of the activities include rock wall climbing, zip-lining, rope crossing and a range of themed swinging passages, all geared at sensation-ally transporting you through the forest area. There are a variety of routes to suit your individual abil-ity. This will also go some way to dictating how long the course will take as some ‘fly’ through it while others may be a little more cau-tious whilst elevated several me-ters in the air. Before beginning, all safety aspects will be explained through demonstrations which, give or take a few minor details, transcend the language barrier.

But what would a visit to Herb Hillz be without sampling some of the herbs? The huge gardens allow you the opportunity to pick and sample some interesting plants. Also available are classes which will teach you more about cooking the aforementioned herbs in different dishes. If you’re not much into picking herbs, there are a number of small shops that sell a good variety that you can purchase to take home. The site also incorporates the Kim Taehee Green Tea Gardens which is the only green tea field of its kind in the area.

If you enjoy traditional meals like bibimbap then it is definitely worth trying here as it is infused with the locally grown herbs giv-ing it an alternative edge.

With the London Olympics drawing ever closer, there is no doubting the fact that

these next few months will be crucial for all the athletes competing. None more so than the World’s Fastest Man, Usain Bolt. I was lucky enough to pose a few questions to him in a recent interview and he seems fully focused on the task ahead.

Preparations are going well. The hard off season training has been completed and now we will speed up as we approach the start of the season. I never focus on one person as you could spend all your time watching one guy and someone else takes you by surprise. In my personal opinion, you are the greatest athlete of all time. You have mastered the 100 meters and 200 meter. JAPAN - KYOTO AND NARA HISTORIC TOUR

through traditional markets, chains of delicately folded paper cranes, and of course, some of the most polite locals you will ever meet, Japan is the perfect destination for a quick escape.

Nara is the perfect day trip. Take the train from Osaka in the morning, and wander with the sika deer in Nara Park. The deer were once consid-ered sacred, but are now protected as national treasures. The population is large, over a thousand in the area. Since it such a popular destination, the animals are friendly to people and curious. Deer crackers are sold around the city, but be warned, they will form a small mob once they realize you have some!

The temples and shrine are all well placed in Nara, so tourists can wander throughout the area and see everything in a day. Stop into tourist information located in the train station to get a map and start walking. The most memorable sight is Todaiji Temple. It was formerly the head of all provincial Buddhist temples in Japan, and its

historical significance makes it a must see. The main hall is the world’s largest wooden building, which it has to be given the enormous size of the 15m bronze Buddha it features. This statue was constructed in 751, and it took years of the country’s bronze production and half of the population at the time to create it. Don’t miss the chance to walk all of the way around the Buddha, to see the other artifacts being displayed and the hole cut into one of the pillars. The belief surrounding it says that anyone who crawls through it will reach enlightenment in their next lifetime.

To really see Japan, though, one must go to Kyoto. The city is full of significant sights, and could easily keep one occupied for days. Personally, I was on a tight schedule and had to make the most out of two full days in the city. The highlight of my trip was Fushimi Inari. To me, this is the height of Japan’s iconic sights; the bright orange gateways line the mountain paths and frequently open up to larger shrines. Because this shrine is traditionally for business and rice produc-tion, there are little fox statues scattered throughout the area, with keys representing those to the rice silo dangling from their mouths. The area is bursting with intricate statues, miniature gateways, and shrines that

will delight any photographer.

There is a trail situated on Inari Mountain, with a look out at the point, then a loop to continue the journey through the torii. Unlike many famous loca-tions in Kyoto, Fushimi Inari was relatively empty, with only a few dozen tourists walking through the trails. It is an opportunity for some quiet reflection in a beautiful setting. Bring comfortable shoes if you plan on doing the whole trail; there are plenty of places to stop and get a snack or some water.

In the evening, stop by Gion to catch a glimpse of a geisha, rushing off to an appointment. I arrived around 4:30 pm, and would suggest others do the same. Generally they stay on the smaller streets, as the tea houses and their homes are close together. I simply walked around reading the engraved wooden signs on each doorway - the more names, the more geishas lived in that house. You can easily find a doorway to discreetly wait nearby for their departure. I was lucky enough to see a dozen in one evening, mostly achieved by waiting in one place and a lot of patience. All of the time spent was well worth it though, to see the product of such ritual-

ized and traditional beauty. It truly is a glimpse into an elite society seeped with such attention to detail and meticulous preparation.

Overall, I loved Japan. With the ridiculously convenient location, I think everyone should make a point to stop over and see some of the country while living in Korea. Japanese people were friendly, welcoming, and generally spoke English well; it is a trip I would recommend even to the solo traveler. The ease of which a

tourist can navigate the areas is ideal, and the transportation is simple to use. Don’t miss an opportunity to experience such a fantastic culture first hand.

For a cheap and fast trip, I suggest flying Air Busan into Osaka. My flight was Monday to Friday and I paid 260,000 won roundtrip. From Daegu, grab a bus at Dongdaegu Station to Gimhae airport, it only takes an hour and fifteen minutes. I recommend staying at Hotel Aldebaran in Osaka - it is one of the few capsule hotels that allow women to stay and is under 1,000 yen a night (14,000 won)! Book online through hostelworld.com. Eat cheap

from the vending machines of ramen, English wasn’t often used, but Korean was! Sound out the hangul, buy a bowl and hand your ticket to the employee at the counter. For the sentimental types, try to get a stamp at each city’s tourist info and each tourist destination - each temple and castle has one for free that you can collect as tokens of your trip.

might be counting down, but Daegu’s heat isn’t. There’s still time to trim that figure and strut your stuff wherever the sand meets the ocean. Just stick by these diet tips to burn some major belly fat and get ready to flaunt your form all over Facebook.

Breakfast comes but once a day, and with a dip in blood sugar lev-els, you’re tummy’s crying, “Feed me!” Start things off with a bowl of cereal, yogurt (or skim milk), and your choice of fruit. Berries are best as they pack a lot of fiber and antioxidants. Or opt for oat-meal, but not the sugary Quaker Oat kind. Get the plain stuff and sweeten it up with fruit or natural honey.

If you’re into morning smooth-ies then good for you. Also try protein shakes. They’re not just for body builders. Protein powder is teeming with amino acids that stack muscle and burn fat. Be sure to mix with low-fat milk. Remember: the more calcium the better. Ca beats fat in every fight and sometimes prevents it from even forming.

Learn to like eggs unless your cholesterol levels are off the charts. Regular sized eggs pack only sixty calories per pop and contain vitamin B12 which helps metabolize fat. Who knew? LSU researchers did.

Got the midday munchies? Find some organic peanut butter that doesn’t have added sugar. The nia-cin in there will keep your diges-tive tubing in check, as well as halt annoying belly bloat. Avoid more than two tablespoons a day; PB is loaded with fat! Snack on some nuts instead. They’ll keep you slim and fill your stomach. Hold the salt though. We all know what sodium does to blood pressure. Almonds are a nice way to stave hunger pangs, but don’t get too carried away. More than twenty-four rings up unwanted calories.

When it comes to meat, go lean with turkey. The protein in there burns more calories than carbs or fat. Even leaner? Chow down on tuna and salmon. Not only do fish have protein, but the omega-3’s they carry regulate stress chemi-

cals that fatten abs. Speaking of protein, don’t forget beans. High in fiber, low in calories, they’re good for your heart because they lower LDL cholesterol which pre-vents heart disease. The more you eat, the more you—reduce blood sugar, obesity, and cancer. (Was that supposed to rhyme?).

Summer wouldn’t be complete without a refreshing salad. Greens that’ll keep you lean, like spinach and broccoli, are bursting with vi-tamin/minerals and fiber and have few calories. Try romaine, red leaf, or arugula for variety. Do sprinkle some Parmigiano-Reggiano on top. Parmesan’s been proven to ac-tivate the fat fighting hormones in your body, and because of its high protein and calcium count, “You’ll stay full longer,” says physician/chef/ nutritionist extraordinaire,

Walk the strip in Koh Tao, the smallest of Thailand’s

gulf coastal islands, and it won’t be long before spotting the local badge: a patch of gauze along an elbow or knee, adhered to the flesh with strips of medical tape. Underneath lies superficial wounds some refer to as the Koh Tao tattoo, injuries caused by mo-torbike accidents in a place Lonely Planet Guide implies as being the bike scam capital of Thailand.

It’s a side of the paradise story you don’t hear coming out of the Land of Smiles’ very often. The northernmost of the Samui Sister Islands, Koh Tao is home to frequent motorbike accidents, and mishaps can be blamed on obvi-ous factors that vacationers easily ignore or are simply oblivious to.

Main roads are poorly paved and often have dangerous, sweeping turns. Hills are steep and com-bative. And to see those elusive nuggets the island has locked in its isolated interior, some serious off-roading is required, which involves a treacherous mixture of hills, rocks, dirt—the basic recipe for disaster. The main cause for accidents, however, is a solid lack of riding experience.

When faced with challenging ter-rain, most tourists lack the proper experience to handle themselves. Getting patched up at a clinic is inexpensive, and luckily, medical centers are ubiquitous through-out Koh Tao. But even if all your bones are intact, the next phase of

a motorbike accident can be even more painful. Repair fees.

One couple admitted to lay-ing their scooter down after a rough U-turn in some gravel. After a stripped toenail and a few scratches on the bike’s sticker (yes, the sticker) the rental shop demanded 150 USD for repairs. Damage a bike where parts have to be shipped from the mainland, including most dirt bikes, replace-ment fees can be as high as 500 USD and up. “It’s business,” one rental shop owner professed in all seriousness. “You damage our bikes, you pay our price.”

Fair or not, tourists are bound to a contract that clearly states damaged bikes must return to the rental company for repairs and not an outside shop. Try and take your bike somewhere local and more often than not, you’ll get turned away. “I’m scared to do repairs,” a mechanic along Mae Haad Bay confessed. “They know me in this neighborhood. It affects their busi-ness and can become a legal issue.”

The bottom line is: be smart. Scooters are fine and dandy for cruising main streets only. Going off road, rent a dirt bike with a manual transmission, or put the

extra money down and get a four-wheeler for the day. By no means drink and drive or exceed a safe speed limit; there is no official speed limit in Koh Tao, making road transport even more hellish. And without any former motorbike experience, vacationing in the gulf in no way entitles someone to attempt riding without a license, especially on an island that doesn’t hand out helmets with their rentals.

Naturally, conspiracy theories have sprouted in places like Lonely Planet’s online blog, claim-ing rental companies in Koh Tao are loaning “rigged” bikes fixed for disaster, or that tourists are extremely overcharged for minimal dam-ages like scratches on panel stickers. Putting it in perspective, if there’s any suspicion regarding the condition of a motorbike, can’t the renter simply refuse the bike? The only real scam is when com-panies charge for damages like scratches that were already there. To counter this, take pictures before renting any bike. When it comes time to return the vehicle, there’s undisputable photographic proof. And let’s not forget how precious a passport is. Offer a photocopy upon renting. If the company doesn’t accept photocopies, find another one that will. That way, the option to hand over the keys and walk away from a company that insists pay-ment for pre-existing damages is still available.

Too many reports have been made by tourists taking motorbikes such as scooters onto terrain unsuitable for that vehicle, incurring damages, then claiming that the repair fees are scam worthy. In these cases, such tourists should expect to bite the bullet. Paying for sticker scratches is one thing, but damage any major component and the rental company factors all the days their bike will be unavailable for loaning while undergoing main-tenance. Why should rental owners give tourists a break when the tourists are the ones dropping their bikes out of sheer inexperience? Owners will negotiate, but don’t expect to find pushovers. Their businesses thrive on overcharging for repairs.

There’s nothing like a motorbike accident to sully your island experience, so ride safe and be wary. Avoid scams by holding onto your passport and photographing your rental beforehand. And try not to come home with one of Koh Tao’s infamous tattoos. That’s one scar no one wants to brag about.

dise and impulse buyer's nightmare, Seomun Market offers an utterly mind-bending assault on all the senses. It's brimming with clothing stalls galore, food stands as far as the eye can see, chat amongst friends, bartering amongst strangers and free wafts of pungent aromas that linger the air. Dating back to its 1669 open-ing during the Joseon Dynasty, this six district mishmash of 400 shops always provides adven-ture. Conveniently located on the Green Line at the “Seomun Market” stop exit 1, just past Banwoldang, this treasure chest is open for daily exploration from 9am-7pm excluding the 2nd and 4th Mondays of every month. With so many twists, turns and possibilities for your wallet, my advice to the uninitiated: come armed with a pocketbook full of won, an empty stomach and a list. At the top of my to-do's this trip, a mission to find the 700 won

wonder famous for her traditional Korean hotteok.

After a few hops, swift zigzags and some solid shoulder swipes, my friend and I had made it passed the street vendors and managed to stumble into the covered market area. Before I even spot her, I

register that sweet smell I don’t encounter often enough -- cin-namon. There she was, a woman centered between an antique shop, polo shirts and a textile store sitting at her bustling stand aside a large would-be hot plate serving the costumers that surrounded her. Mechanically yet thought-fully, she puts cinnamon, brown sugar, and other ingredients into each pastry ball while her sidekick flattens them out to cook. She greets my wide-eyed, grinning face with loving and sympathetic eyes as if she knows I searched her out amongst all the venders and hands over her masterpiece. Whether you bag it, cut it, or wolf it down, this double-layered pancake of syrupy goodness can’t cool down fast enough. The hoards of folk surrounding this happening stand noshing excitedly attest. So with my top mission com-plete, between a few choice curse words while trying to stuff my

face, my friend and I joke back and forth about wanting to find the infamous “live food” section. Even us--repeat offenders--had yet to come across it. So we decide to look. We go through the extensive outdoor apparel collection, hold our breath past fish gut central and then, it happens. I hear whimpers, then meows. I look to my right and there they are--caged puppies and kittens. I start to sweat but not go into full panic mode until I see the chickens and rabbits. We have entered into the “live food” section! I instantly imagine Toto and Thumper belly up on the din-ner table. In one swoop, I latch onto my friend, throw away my sweet

deliciousness and shuffle towards the nearest straightaway. We bee line for the hat section--I may have lost my appetite, but not my will to shop. In mid-dash we pass a prancing pug heading towards the “section.” I think, “Run away while you still have a chance!” I

instantly freeze and realize this is en-tirely inappropriate and silently shame myself. This farm girl knows what livestock is raised for and just because I may not fancy a bowl of Boshing-tang, I must be respectful towards another culture and their traditions. So after finishing my to-do list by barter-ing for funky festival gear, we slowly meander melan-cholically towards the exit past my favorite Kalgusku

stall, another famous market must try. Being judgmental left me fashionable, yet starving. Don’t let it happen to you.

WEEKEND GETAWAYA group of friends and I had a 3

day weekend. We wanted to go someplace that most of us hadn’t been before, and we wanted it to be fairly laid back and low key. My girlfriend suggested that we try Yeongdeok. Sure enough we found a wide variety of pensions available for reasonable weekend renting prices.

For those of you who don’t know Yeongduk is a smaller city just out-side of Pohang. You can take a bus from Daegu to Pohang to Yeongduk (about 3 hours), or you can arrange for private accommodations to take you directly there (about 2 hours).

When we arrived at the pension we were all pleasantly surprised. It was right on the ocean and included a small grocery store was just across the way. Each room was equipped with a bathroom, bedding, a refrigerator, a 2 burner stove, and a sink. Outside there was a patio, picnic tables, and a lovely view of the sea. If you want to bring your own food its completely ok, or its possible to arrange for the own-ers of the Pension to provide food for you, though this may require a Korean translator. We brought ourselves enough food for 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, and 2 dinners.

After all the logistical issues were sorted out it was time to have some fun in the sun. Each pension had a courtyard with a nice lawn that was perfect for suntanning, grilling, lounging, throwing a frisbee, playing cards, and most importantly, drinking. Bring your own music and you've got yourself a P-A-R-T-Y PARTY!

As far as prices went we found them to be quite rea-sonable. Two six-man pensions were 500,000 for the weekend, with a grill fee of 20,000 per usage (10,000

if you have your own charcoal). If you are interested in renting a private bus like we did, you should contact Daegu Compass and they will be more than happy to make that hap-pen for you. All in all it was a won-derful place to go for some much needed R and R. Below are a list of websites that will link you to some of the different pensions around the Yeongduk area.

SEONYUDO ISLAND - BEST SPOT IN KOREA

Last month I took a trip to Seonyudo Island, located

South West of South Korea. I have finally found the time to write about the trip. We can say simply, my Seonyudo Island trip was positively amazing. Saturday I awoke early in the morning (3.55 am) and jumped out of bed. I was about to start my journey to Jeonju, where I was planning to meet my friend and his neighbors and take a ferry towards Gunsan together. Finally, the weekend in nature was about to begin! I was super excited about this trip as there is never enough greenery

in Korea for my taste. Seonyudo is one island in a small cluster of islands which includes Munyedo and Jangjado. Some of the islands are connected by bridges, with a total population of about 500. Once I arrived in Jeonju, the rest of the long trip was simple and so enjoyable. My group of friends and I joined with another team from Seoul at the Gunsan ferry point in order to reach our destination. I was greeted with a view of the mountain as the ferry came closer to the Island. During the ferry ride, we enjoyed ourselves with dancing, music

and everything. We reached the island in the afternoon, and then we started to get around the island by walking as well as with hired vehicles. By far the best way to ex-plore Seonyudo is by bicycle, but the bicycle is little bit tough while crossing the next island by bridges, So, I would recommend renting bikes in the miniscule main town near the ferry dock. Once outside of town, you will ride past fishing villages, forested hills and hidden beaches. You might even see lo-cals cleaning their fishing nets for the next day’s catch.

지난달 나는 군산 부근에 위치한 선유도로 여행을 갔다. 마침내 여행에 대해 글 쓸 시간이 났다. 간단히 말하자면 선유도 여행은 경이로움 그 자체였다. 토요일 새벽 3시 55분에 일어나서 전주로 출발하며 나의 여행이 시작됐다. 전주에서 나는 친구와 그의 지인을 만나 함께 군산가는 배를 탔다. 나는 한국의 청정한 자연 속에서 주말을 보냈다. 나는 한국의 자연을 경험한 적이 거의 없기 때문에 이번 여행이 정말 흥분되었다. 선유도는 무녀도와 장자도를 포함하는 고군산군도에 있는 하나의 섬이다. 500여 명 주민이 살고 있고, 섬들이 육지와 다리로 연결되어 있다. 일단 전주에 도착하니, 나는 매우 즐거웠다. 친구들과 나는 서울에서 온 다른 팀들과 목적지인 군산 선착장에서 합류했다. 배가 선유도에 가까워짐에 따라 산 경치가 우리를 반겨주었다. 배를 타고 있는 동안 우리는 노래 부르고 춤추며 즐거운 시간을 보냈다. 오후, 섬에 도착하였고 우리는 걷거나 차를 타고 섬 주변을 돌아다녔다. 선유도를 여행하는 최고의 방법은 자전거를 타는 것이다. 하지만 자전거는 다리를 건너며 인근 섬으로 건너가는 동안에는 조금 힘들다. 그래서 선착장 부근 작은 마을에서 오토바이를 대여하는 것을 추천한다. 일단 마을을 벗어나면 여러분은 어촌 마을과 숲이 우거진 언덕, 그리고 알려지지 않은 해변을 달리게 될 것이다. 다음날 고기잡이를 위해 그물망을 정비하고 있는 지역주민을 볼 수도 있다.

Our first night we had a beautiful dinner, Tamil Nadu regional food brought by our friends and their family made us feel that we were in our own native atmosphere. The next morning, we started to travel around the island again, but this time with hired motorbikes. Luckily, I had a good partner for roaming around island on the motorbike. We covered three islands connected with bridges and had many enjoyable moments. In the afternoon, a part of our team had left the island for their next day duties. The rest of us planned to spend the second night on the island. As the sun set, we played beach ball and it was really awesome! Within a few minutes, we became systematic players and an audience from various countries gathered around us to watch. It was really exciting. Later, we enjoyed an amazing dinner with our team members and then ventured off to the beach again with fireworks in hand and

After two fantastic years, it’s time for me to leave Korea and my position at the magazine. I have truly enjoyed my time with the Compass and I appreciate hav-ing had the opportunity to work and party with all of you.

The constant turnover of talented, cre-ative people from all over the world has made my experience in Korea and with the magazine so much more special. The writers of the magazine have the free-dom to write about whatever gets them excited, and so much credit goes to all of our contributors who help fill every issue of the magazine with insightful, helpful, and entertaining pieces. I know I will miss Korea, my friends, and working with some of the most creative people I have ever met, but it’s time to move on and live somewhere that doesn’t allow me to drink until the sun comes up.

children. We had a very relaxing evening down by the water enjoying the stars and listening to music until we eventually wandered off to enjoy the night. Eventually, I made it to the end of a trail - a beautiful deck leading out into the sea. I walked to the very end of the deck and just soaked in the stars. Then, we took the ferry to return home the next afternoon. Some of the friendliest people that I have ever met were on the island of Seonyudo. While many would not speak much English; they are genuinely interested in you and will try to interact with you. If you are in South Korea and want to get away from the cities for a few days, I highly recommend a trip to Seonyudo Island. I should acknowledge Mr. Karthik SP & his family, Dr. Sankarganesh & his family for organizing the trip and the delicious South Indian food. As well as the other lovable team members for this joyful trip.

았다. 오후에는 우리 팀의 일부가 섬을 떠났다. 나머지 일행은 섬에서 둘째 날 밤을 보내기로 계획했다. 해가 질 무렵 우리는 비치볼을 했고, 그것은 정말 즐거웠다. 몇 분이 지나 우리는 꽤 조직적인 플레이를 했고, 그것을 보기 위해 우리 주변에 다양한 나라에서 온 구경꾼이 모여들었다. 비치볼은 정말 신났다. 이후에 우리는 팀원과 맛있는 저녁을 즐겼고, 다시 해변으로 가서 불꽃놀이를 했다. 침대로 들어가기 전까지 해변에서 별을 보며, 음악을 들으며 낭만적인 저녁을 보냈다. 바다로 뻗어가는 듯한 아름다운 부두의 끝까지 걸어가서 별 속으로 빠져들었다. 다음날 오후 우리는 집에 돌아오기 위해 배를 탔다. 선유도 사람들은 내가 만나본 가장 친절한 사람들이었다. 사람들이 영어를 잘 몰라도, 그들은 진실로 여러분에게 관심을 가지고 교류하고자 한다. 만약 여러분이 한국에 있으면서 며칠간 도시를 벗어나고 싶다면 나는 강력히 선유도 여행을 추천한다. 나는 즐거운 이번 여행을 같이 한 사랑스런 팀원들 뿐 만 아니라 맛있는 인도 음식과 여행을 계획한 카르티크 씨(Mr. Karthik SP) 가족과 상카르가네쉬 씨(Dr. Sankarganesh) 가족에게 감사의 뜻을 전한다.

Going to the dentist can be a nerve-racking experience.

The task gets even more daunting when you’re living in a foreign country. At least, that’s how I felt. I’ve lived in Daegu for just under 4 years, and I had always been too afraid of the dentist to try and find one here. However, in March, as much as I didn’t want to, I needed to go to the dentist. So, I started asking my friends for a reliable dental clinic that would provide the best care possible. My friend told me about a great clinic down-town with a dentist who studied at NYU and could therefore speak English. I was sold.

New York Dental Clinic is conveniently located downtown across the street from the Novotel Hotel. The interior of the clinic is tastefully decorated in a most modern fashion. There are windows lined along the walls of the clinic, letting in a lot of natural sunlight and offer-ing you a place to gaze out as you are getting your dental work done. The clinic is filled with state of the art equipment, and everything is neatly organized, sterilized and ready to go. Computers are found at each chair to help ensure that each and every person that tends to you will get an up-to-date summary of all your past visits, x-rays and procedures. This turned into just one of the ways New York Dental Clinic was able to help me feel more comfortable with my visit there.

One of my biggest concerns was how big the language barrier would be since I can hardly speak any Korean. However, upon meeting the staff, I realized that I did not need to worry about that. Everyone was pleasant and ensured that all of my questions were answered. They addressed my concerns and made me feel at ease. Before each step, they told me what was happening and what other options I had. My biggest concern was how painful everything would be. In the end, pain turned out to be a non-issue. Everything they did was virtually painless because of the adept staff.

After finishing everything, my fears were so al-leviated that I decided to go through with a more extensive procedure. I decided to have a crown bridge put in which would also include a tooth ex-traction and two root canals. My dentist, Hong-Sik, made sure that I was comfortable at home as well as during everything at the clinic. With each visit to the clinic (about 8 total), I gained more admiration and appreciation for the level of professionalism and care they were offering for an affordable price.

I would highly recommend this clinic to anyone. Throughout my entire recovery, the staff was on hand to make sure there were no complications. They went above and beyond their duties to guarantee that I would have a first-rate experi-ence while I was with them. So, the next time you have any problems, from a cavity to a broken tooth, know that you can always trust the friendly, professional staff at New York Dental Clinic!

THE YEOSU EXPO - A GLOBAL EFFORT

Well, after reading a really negative report recently in The Korea Times newspaper, I’m now feeling

like my little article here may be a little misguiding. However, I must continue on with my initial thoughts and disclose to you that if you’re looking for a little weekend getaway, I recommend the Yeosu Expo. Sure, you’re going to get mixed reviews for any event, even this one, possibly even in this composition.

I headed up early on Saturday morning. Thankfully I was riding shotgun in my friend’s car. However, if you don’t have a friend with a car who wants to go, there are buses that can get you there. From Daegu it’s about a four-hour drive. But, it’s not a hard drive. There are several rest stops along the way. Unfortu-nately, coffee shops don’t open early in Korea, so plan ahead :-/

It was around 10AM when we arrived. We were able to skip the lines because we had reserved our tickets online which is highly recommended if possible. While it’s on my mind, and we’re talking about

reservations, I’ll get this out now (lest I neglect later). You’re allowed to reserve two exhibits per day online. Figure out which exhibits you want to see and reserve them. That’ll save you a LOT of time. I’ll give you some recommendations a little later in this piece.

So, what in the world is the Yeosu Expo? Well, I’m glad you asked. Honestly, before I went, I had no idea. The Yeosu Expo is an international cooperative effort to discuss marine environmental conservation. I know what you’re thinking. Ok, no..I don’t. But, I can speculate. Nevertheless, basically, this is a worldwide effort to discuss what our international friends are doing to preserve our marine (ocean and sea) wildlife, etc. Now, before you judge, let me say that while it was certainly educational, it was also quite interesting. And, it was even more so interesting that I was travel-ling with a scientist!

So, a few details. Two days is recommended. Sure, you can get there early, check it out, and leave late..but you’re certain to miss a lot. Lodging can be kind of pricey, but think of all you’ll save if you’re not splurg-

Day one, check out the International Pavilion. You’ll see exhibits from a multitude of countries and their efforts to protect your earth. A couple that were really impressive to me were France and Singapore. But, there were so many to choose from, including: Russia, Spain, Turkey, Germany, Australia, Thailand, et al. But, they’re all located in one huge pavilion, so it’s easy to go from one to the next. Also, there are various restaurants and coffee shops located throughout, so if you need a little break, you’ll have opportunity. And, the International Pavilion features an impressive screen on the ceiling which is 218 meters wide and 30 meters long, 6,324 units of 60 inches TVs combined altogether.

On day two, check out the individual pavilions. We saw the Theme Pavilion, Samsung Pavilion, the Aquarium, the Robot Pavilion, and a few more. Be sure to go into the Sky Tower, as you’ll be able to view the entire expo from a sky-high, 360 degree angle. The Sky Tower is an old silo which has been converted to feature a 12 ton desalination tank on one side, observation deck on the other, and a pipe

organ that plays ‘the sound of the sea.’ Plus, they give you your very own Sky Tower coffee mug when you exit!

We ended the day at the Big-O Show (not what you may be thinking) is at least entertaining and worth staying for. It’s a huge ‘O’ that features a water screen with a laser light and fire show. During peak seasons, though, it gets incredibly crowded, so try to get there a few minutes early.

So, in summary: check it out! Be sure to visit the website to check on reserving your tickets, two main exhibits each day, and travel arrangements (http://eng.expo2012.kr). By the way, I stayed at Y Ocean Ho-tel, which is about a five minute walk. But, there are also a few pensions you can check on. One that I saw was Yeosu Pension. Sorry..didn’t get a number.

The actual ‘festival’ aspect of the expo may actually be over by the time this article is printed, but the expo itself will continue. That just means you may be able to skip long lines and get your Iced Americano within 30 minutes. That was not my experience. Neverthe-less, grab a group of friends who are ready for not only

an entertaining, but also an educational experience, and head off to the Yeosu Expo, for what I considered a great time.

Suseong Lake area offers a change of pace to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Suseong Lake also boasts an amusement park (Suseong Land) reminiscent of those carnivals you went to with your parents at the local fair ground. There’s something to be said when you are on the back of the seahorse with a safety bar that barely locks you in place as you float for a few brief seconds in mid-air before being plunged back down in your seat. Thrilling, exhilarating are just a few choice words to descrribe the experience.

Suseong Lake area is one of the classiest places in Daegu. A perfect date area. After taking your sweetheart out to a nice meal, I’d recommend Napoli, Ganga, La Bella Cucina or New York New York, take a stroll around Suseong Lake until you come upon the famous ‘duck boats’ and paddle your way into each other’s hearts. CAMP HENRY, South Korea – A group of 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command service-members and civilians departed the parking lot of the Evergreen Club on Camp Walker bound for cultural tour at Geoje Island, South Korea. The trip was spon-sored by a group of Korean nation-als who are longstanding members of the Good Neighbor Program and organized by the 19th ESC Community Relations office. The first stop was the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineer-ing Co., which is the second larg-est shipbuilder in the world and one of the "Big Three" shipbuilders of South Korea. “I didn’t know there was such a company that built ships here in Korea,” said Lt. Col. Rajesh Lobrecht, 19th ESC G-1 adjutant, who participated on tour with his three children.

After a 13-minute introductory video, the group boarded two DSME buses and took a driving tour of the company’s shipyard. The group was informed that DSME boasts the largest dry-dock in the world. “The shipyard tour

was really nice,” said Romar Ban-zon, son of Lt. Col Roy Banzon. “I’m trying to take engineering in college, so I’m interested in seeing them building these ships.”

Group members had the chance to look down from the observa-tion point to get a sense of the company size, which is comprised of 25,000 workers and earned 11.4 billion dollars in 2010.“I am amazed and awed at the operation here. The ships are big, and the equipment they use is incredible,” Lobrecht said.

After the visit to the shipyard, the group boarded the buses bound for their next destination – lunch at the Beef Rack. The Beef Rack is a restaurant where Soldiers and civilians were able to select their own meet and side dishes and then cook them on small grills at their table. “We tried the bulgogi, kimchi, spicy chicken and rice,” said Spc. Lisa Taylor, who went

on the tour with her husband and three kids. “We wanted to get out and see something different.”

The next stop of the tour was supposed to be Oedo Island, but due to high winds and rain, the tour guides made a quick adjustment and took the group to the village of Geoje where they toured the Kim Young-sam Presidential Archives and Exhibit Hall, which was named after the 14th President of South Korea. “I was a little disap-pointed that we couldn’t go to Oedo Island, but this is pretty nice. It allows us to get to learn a little more of Korean history,” Romar Banzon said.

The Exhibit Hall is housed in a modern two story stone building next to a traditional wood home that Kim Young Sam grew up in and featured a large assortment of artifacts from President Kim’s time in office that the group members got to inter-act with. The final stop for the Island tour was at the Geoje POW Camp, which opened its doors in 1951 to house Chinese and North Korean soldiers who were captured during the Korean War. “This place is more interesting than I expected,” said Dannielle Trevino, wife of James Trevino, 6th Signal Center.

The camp allowed Soldiers the opportunity to see firsthand a component of war that often goes unrecognized. The tour group was able to walk the grounds and see what life as a POW was like through exhibits illustrating fights, captures, sur-renders and insurrections. “It had a lot of original artifacts that depict the actual history of what went on here,” Trevino said.
