Slow down the Siberian Express, I want to get off! This picture depicts my happy little family, bundled

up in layers because we have spent most of this wicked winter cheering on our daughter’s first ski race season as part of the Holiday Race Team. We have lived and breathed frosty air on the Northern Michigan winter mountain tour. Weekends full of family skiing at Crystal Mountain, and races over at Mt. Holiday, Schuss Mountain, Nub’s Nob and the grand finale at Boyne Highlands, with every week spending more days and nights practicing back at Mt. Holiday. It’s been a great way to motivate my family out of the usual grizzly bear hibernation, while also experiencing family bonding, friendships new and old and amazing team spirit. BUT …

I have to admit here and now, I’m tired of bowls of chili and am majorly hot chocolate-ed out. I’m ready to retire my thermals, peel off the 50 shades of layers, claim back my bare fingers and toes, ditch the ChapStick, say goodbye once and for all to dry skin and actually feel my cold-numbed face again! Bring on the bronzer, the eezy-breezy wear and unleash the strappy sandals. I do declare I have a major case of Spring Fever.

I know, I know, even when the calendar claims that it is officially Spring, I know this doesn’t mean it has actually arrived. But the Sun will rise earlier, giving us longer days and the feeling of Spring. Here’s a fact: Spring fever is within us—it’s a true state of body and mind. The spring in your step is an actual surge for an increased craving of physical energy. Really! During the Spring months to come, our bodies are triggered and literally “woken up” by the increased daylight we take in. Our melatonin levels begin to drop, lightening our sluggish moods and the need for as much sleep. By nature alone, we have a need and desire to be outside and more active, and the prolonged sun gives us vitamin D.

So even if the weather doesn’t necessarily comply, the good news is your body is ready for Spring! Woo-hoo. And if you’re lucky enough to have a real Spring Break planned to warmer climates, Lucky YOU. It’s the only way to survive a winter here; I’m slow to catch on, just

figuring out that little secret after 5 years.

Baylife Spring Fever will hopefully pop off these pages and inspire you, too, starting with the glorious blossoms of color on the cover by photographer Jim Sorbie and a few of his favorite photos he was happy to share with us of flowers in bloom and nature abounding. Spring’s longer days give way to getting out and about, and a car ride that finds you in the quaint little town of Harbor Springs isn’t complete without the tradition of dining on the water at The Pier Restaurant. (Dining at The Pier Restaurant has been popular since the days before Prohibition. Who knew?)

If you are still not feeling that Spring Fling jolt, you need to wake up with a cup of Jack! We have ventured into the caffeinated world of Jack Davis, “Roaster Jack,” the coffee master behind the formerly named Great Northern Roasting Company. A few custom caffeine sips in his unique coffee Tasting Room will guarantee major spring in your step. Maybe he should rename his coffee “Jumping Jack”?

As we peel back those many layers, Style Editor Kristy Kurjan highlights some Spring Break Style to show a little skin in all the right places. And speaking of travelling, this brings us to our feature that welcomes us inside the magnificent home of Karen and Brett Able, the couple that has been lucky enough to experience living all around the world, only to decide that Paradise Found is right on a little piece of heaven that sits on beautiful Long Lake where they just built their Forever Home.

So even though while we were in production snow days were the norm, frigid below zero temps ruled and the wind chill roared outside, we hope you will enjoy our little Fling with Spring. Because no matter how wicked the Winter, Spring will come eventually! Remember, despite the forecast, Live Like It’s Spring!

Oh What A Night! It’s not every day you get to celebrate a 100 year old birthday, so the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce partied it up January 23rd a little more than usual at their annual gala held at the Grand Traverse Resort. On hand were business people from all around the community. The highlight of the evening was the special honor, 2014 Distinguished Service Award given to Susie Janis for her dedication, commitment and compassion for her years of charity work in the region.

Small Business, Big CelebrationIt’s that time once again for the race to begin of who will be this year’s Small Business Celebration Winner. Last year, top honors went to Oryana. The chamber’s celebration is entering its eleventh year, and the goal is to recognize, embrace and reward what our region is rich with, small businesses. The program begins with a nomination process. From there, a panel of judges selects the top 10 businesses to be recognized. The process ends with the prestigious Hagerty Small Business of the Year Award. Good luck to all. The newly remodeled Warehouse MRKT on Hall Street is a swanky looking place these days. The building owned by Dan and Meridith Falconer has been under construction for what seems like forever, but it is finally taking shape. With its walls of gleaming glass and a chic industrial finish, you could easily think you’ve stepped into a major city block. And one of the most anticipated store openings inside is Dan and Meridith’s own store, named Wood + Cloth and opening any day now. Meridith tells us, “We will offer an array of home goods, furniture, apparel, gifts and unique food items. We also have a selection of Found items we will be selling. We can't wait to be part of the Warehouse MRKT community and are looking forward to celebrating our opening.”

More Floor SpaceFloor Covering Brokers (FCB) are expanding their square footage, branching out with a new second location in Acme. You may have caught the teaser sign, “Guess Who’s Coming?” as you drove by on US 31 N. If you’re a savvy consumer, the familiar colors in the sign divulged a big clue. The store is slated to open in early March and will act as a showroom, flooring design center, and a venue for homeowners, architects and builders to work with FCB employees on selection, measuring, and installation of quality flooring. And we’re sure the fabulous singing voice of spokesperson Miriam Pico will fill the building, too. “The expansion is very exciting,” says Dennis Lauterbach, FCB owner. “It will allow us to increase our footprint and better service Northern Michigan customers.”

What’s All the Puff About?If you have been wondering what all the “Puff” is about on the side of Nolan’s Tobacco on Front Street, Traverse City is now home to Northern Michigan’s only Cigar Bar! Owned by Mike Nolan, Nolan’s Tobacco has been a mainstay for years and home to cigar aficionados near and far, but now their love of experiencing a fine cigar can be accompanied with their favorite adult beverage. A party without cake is really just a meeting – Julia Child

Roadie CuisineBoyne City Morel’s Bistro owner Brett Cuper is making a comeback in Charlevoix this Spring with a new restaurant named Roadhouse 757, in the former Giuseppe's Italian Grille site at 757 Petoskey Ave. After a fire destroyed his wildly popular Morel’s, this will be a welcome homecoming for Foodie Lovers who have missed Brett’s award-winning culinary creations. Here is what Brett shared with us. (Warning: Don’t read this when you’re hungry.) “This is my version of a Texas Style roadhouse. We will be featuring a couple of different steaks: Grilled flank steak with a maple ancho glaze and a blackened top sirloin with a molasses steak sauce (it is the same prep as our rib eye was at Morel's Bistro). We will also have John Cross whitefish and salmon done two ways (mustard seed encrusted and a hoisin BBQ). Maybe my favorite thing will be my blackened pork tenderloin served with a bourbon BBQ, also our jalapeno corn bread with maple butter and our signature app. from Morel's (award winner) When Pigs Fly—a pork shank deep fried and coated with our homemade peach ancho BBQ sauce. For those of you not on the doctor-ordered medication, here’s the lowdown! House specials are breakfast remedy cures like no other in town. Take Chicken and Waffles, for example: Confit-fried chicken, sweet potato waffles, slab-cut bacon and bourbon maple syrup. Or how about Stuffed Brioche French Toast with caramelized pears, goat cheese mousse, cinnamon bacon and bourbon maple syrup? Or Malted Red Velvet Belgian Waffle with strawberry-whipped cream cheese and white chocolate syrup. The menu is unique, inventive and delicious to boot! secret recipe:POPPYCOCK’S HARVEST CHICKEN

Candied red onions-2 cups red onions julienned2/3 cup sugar2/3 cup red wine vinegar

Cook all ingredients in a sauce pot on medium heat until most of the liquid has evaporated and the onions take on a bright pink color. Cool and refrigerate until needed.

Farro salad-1 sweet potato peeled and diced1 parsnip peeled and diced1/2 onion peeled and julienne sliced1/2 bulb fennel cored and julienne sliced1 ½ cups farro uncooked4 cups waterHandful of arugula2oz goat cheese crumbled

Combine the water and farro in a medium saucepan. Add 2 teaspoons of salt. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until the farro is tender, about 30 minutes. Drain well, and then transfer to a large bowl to cool.

Place parsnips and sweet potatoes on an oiled baking tray and roast at 400 until tender.

Sautee onion and fennel in a medium saucepan with butter until caramelized.

Chicken Confit-6 chicken legs with thighs3 quarts of duck fat (or lard)SaltPepperHerbs de Provence

Pat chicken dry. Season with salt, pepper and herbs de Provence. Put in a 4- or 5-qt. Dutch oven. Cover and chill at least 12 hours and up to 18.

Preheat oven to 200°. Add duck fat to chicken; warm on stovetop over lowest heat, covered, until fat is melted, about 20 minutes. It should completely cover chicken; if it doesn't, add more. Bake until meat is very tender when pierced, at least 8 hours and up to 12.

Once cooked remove chicken from fat. The fat can be chilled and stored for future use.

When ready to serve-Heat cooked chicken on a baking tray at 400 until hot and the skin starts to crisp and brown.15-20 minutes

Combine roasted sweet potatoes, parsnip, onion, fennel and cooked farro in a buttered sauce pot and bring up to temp. Once hot add arugula and goat cheese.

Top farro salad with chicken, candied onions and drizzle with rosemary infused olive oil.

producers. Hard Cider, not your child’s apple juice, is produced in numerous styles utilizing different apple varieties with varying styles. Very popular in the UK and other Northern European countries, the delicious flavors of cider can range from relatively sweet to bone dry. Usually slightly effervescent, most ciders are relatively clear and slightly straw colored to the eye with some of the more traditionally produced products being a bit cloudy. One of my favorite local ciders is the “Crabster” from Tandem Ciders; crisp, tart and dry to the bone. There is a flavor profile for almost everyone’s palate, so if you are traveling around Northern Michigan, you owe yourself the favor of stopping in at producers such as Tandem Cider, Black Star Farms, Left Foot Charley and I am sure I am missing a few. In the first place, I never took on any project with the idea that there would be an award attached to it. Reward, yes, in the sense that when "the group" of us are finished there is a great feeling of accomplishment. I have found that one receives so much more by giving; it's a pure, simple and honest fact!

WHAT DOES “SERVICE” MEAN TO YOU? To have the opportunity to serve in one's community is a gift within itself. It's there where you get a clearer picture of what our community is truly about. Just having the opportunity to work alongside with other members of this great area is a gift. The "picture" of what Traverse City is becomes so much clearer; its people, its people, its people....and may I add, it's FABULOUS PEOPLE!

WHAT EXPERTISE DO YOU BRING TO THE NEW YMCA? I have been with the YMCA since 1996. I have held numerous positions along the way. When I started I was in child care and aquatics, swim team, sports, teen programming, camp, membership, fundraising, executive director, vice president, and Senior Vice President. I have worked for small YMCA’s with an annual budget of $3 million to budgets of more than $40 million.

WHY ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT YOUR JOB? I love being part of the YMCA Movement. We are here to help nurture the potential of kids through our programs, to help the community stay healthy, and be a destination place for building relationships, small Y communities, and building key collaborations within our community.

YOU RECENTLY MOVED FROM TAMPA, FLORIDA TO NORTHERN MICHIGAN. HOW HAS THE TRANSITION BEEN? COLD – I am originally from Green Bay, Wisconsin and spent most of my life in the Midwest, it is good to be home. The transition has been great. This YMCA has such a caring and passionate staff, as well as a very committed board of managers. Everyone involved is excited about the possibilities that can happen with this new Y.

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO NORTHERN MICHIGAN? Personally, being closer to home, Midwest. Professionally, I have always wanted to get some large Y experience and come back to a community that valued and invested in the YMCA. I place where the YMCA could help be a leader in Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY? My wife Megan and I have 3 beautiful children…..Twin 6 year olds Cade and Myah and our 2 year old Adalyn. We are very excited to meet new people and connect our family to this community.

Locals and Visitors alike look forward to keeping this tradition alive year after year at the elegant Stafford’s Pier Restaurant in Harbor Springs, the only true place to dine on the sparkling shores we are lucky to call home.

As Spring once again approaches, the sleepy little town of Harbor Springs slowly comes back to life, and with it, so does The Pier Restaurant. The popular dining staple has been a waterfront landmark since before the Prohibition days. In fact, the original structure was only the Chart Room. The Pointer Room was added in about 1970 (the year Stafford’s Hospitality acquired the restaurant) and was a huge project extending the property out over the water with 75-foot pilings. The Pointer Room is why the restaurant quite literally sits on the water.

Inside the Pointer room, all is the height of elegance. Wall-to-wall windows elongate the dazzling water view, and just across the way is the aristocratic Harbor Point. This is a rare bird’s-eye peek at Harbor Point that can only be seen from the water of the legendary homes owned by a privileged few. the Harbor Point Association’s original water taxi. The Pointer, which ran between Harbor Point and the Village of Harbor Springs, is celebrating its 80th anniversary. To commend this milestone The Pointer has been restored in all its glory and will be launched into the pristine waters again, returning to The Pier this summer!

The ambiance here is delightful, overlooking the crystal blue water. As Spring blooms, more boats will slowly meander in. The nautical theme is all around you, from shiny wooden canoes up on high to spectacular gold-framed and water-themed oil paintings that beautifully adorn the walls. Executive Chef Britt Beaumont is your personal guide, tempting your palate and tickling your taste buds. He truly loves the creative outlet of his craft. Mystery to the World—the Hows behind it, its Great Secret, and that there is as much Art as there is Science.” Since Jack

has studied coffee for years (his college roommate in Montana was a son of a coffee roaster), and for the last 14 years has been making a pretty decent living roasting and packaging the black liquid gold we all shamelessly worship, beginning every waking day with it, he must know his stuff, right?

Legend has it that way back in the 9th century an Ethiopian goat herder discovered coffee by accident when he noticed how crazy the beans were making his goats. This fact is not the BIG secret that he speaks of, but ever since coffee has held a long and impressive place in history almost as rich as its most virile, robust beans. Coffee’s intoxicating and magnetic allure keeps us always wanting more.

But let’s get back to Jack! A Traverse City Native, he ventured out to Montana, returning home in 2001 with his new wife, Sarah. He is actually a welder by trade, but he had been bitten hard by the caffeine bug and figured there are always jobs for welders if Coffee doesn’t work out! The couple bought a house, and Jack sold his truck to finish the garage.

Like many great entrepreneur success stories, this one was “brewed” in a garage. For training, Jack flew in the guy who sold him his roaster equipment. This Coffee Guru Extraordinaire told him, “Rethink all the things that got you into this.” He sounds as wise as Mr. Miyagi from “The Karate Kid.” Jack realized that everything he had learned thus far had been other people’s shortcuts and bad habits. He committed to relearn everything.

So in the garage the magic beans and the master plan began to take shape. Each hand-prepared batch started with superior, imported and weighed green beans that were poured onto the drum roaster on hot, rotating paddles. Time and temperature are critical. After a quenching cool-down process, the beans were re-weighed for moisture loss! Jack manually bagged the roasted beans by hand for 10 years, with a scoop donated to him by the guy he bought the scale from. He also self-distributed around the area for years, and you have probably seen Jack at Oryana, Tom’s or a local restaurant or coffee shop that proudly serves Jack’s Cool Beans! Some of his best sellers are French Roast, Cannonball Espresso and Black and Tan.

local company with a global reach because everything we do is tied to agriculture,” says Jack. “I am very proud of the fact that we are still here.”

Along with Jack’s new branding message, he also launched the first Coffee Tasting Room in Michigan, inspired by the wine model at their East Silver Lake Road building. (They finally had to expand out of the garage in 2005.) The idea for a coffee tasting room came along when a few random people kept showing up asking if they could buy coffee there. What a simple concept! On-site, they will build you a custom cup of coffee around your likes! It is a specific art. We watched them create and were visually amazed by the science and mesmerized by the aromas.

Not surprisingly, those wise words of the Zen Coffee Guru way back in 2001 shaped Jack’s life for the better. Some other words to live by in Jack’s World: Coffee can always be better. Take your product more seriously than yourself. Carry water for the master! On non-Coffee days (I’m sure he still drinks it?), Jack is proud dad to Gracie (11), Judd (6) and Max (5). And just in case you were wondering … if Coffee still doesn’t work out, Jack would be playing with Street Rod Cars! (Flying high on Caffeine, no doubt.)

Kat, who is also gifted in music and plays the flute, says her artistic talent started to bloom in 6th grade, “I took it too seriously, though, and by 9th grade I was more naturally inspired.” Her art teacher, Amy Harper, encouraged Kat to submit an entry that earned her the scholarship. The piece was a concentration that focused on the contrast of geometric shapes between the City and the Earth. “I like abstract. I really want a future in movies, in illustration and animation,” she explains. It looks like she is off to a terrific start. Congratulations and good luck, Kat.

MEET THE PHOTOGRAPHER

Jim SorbieMy first fascination with photography began oddly enough, in church. As a young boy attending church every Sunday was the rule, and our church had an inspirational photograph on the cover of the weekly bulletin. Each Sunday I’d marvel at the photos (which were big on sunrise/sunset photos) and think about creating my own images

I dabbled a bit in photography while working downstate, but moving to Leelanau County and my wife’s retirement gift of a digital 35mm SLR provided the impetus to learn more and capture the beauty of the local sights. Most of my photos are taken here in the county or on road trips with my wife, Gerri. We built our house in Empire in 2000 and moved here permanently in 2006. The woods, barns, lakes, sunrises and sunsets of Leelanau County provide ample opportunity to capture wonderful images, Northern Michigan can make any photographer look good. Leelanau County gave me an appropriate pallet and the new camera was the tool.

Growing up along the shores of Lake St Clair gave me a love of sailing and the Great Lakes, so a fair number of my photographs are on or around these lakes. We have our own boat, so trips to Canada’s North Channel area of Georgian Bay provide plenty of photo opportunities. Involvement with Traverse City’s Traverse Area Community Sailing provides even more opportunities for great photos of kids in boats!

I recently renewed my pilot’s license and have begun to enjoy the sights of this great state from the air. I hope to try to combine those interests and see what images I can capture from a bird’s eye view of Northern Michigan.

Organizing:The Mud RoomAs Spring time approaches (on this 0 degree day we have to believe), we all begin to think of organizing and updating areas of our home to refresh it along with the new season. A room of the home that has become much larger in size and focus is the Homeowner Entry or as often called the Mud Room.

With growing families and the stuff that travels in and out of the door with us each day, the need to come through the door and have an area to drop all of those things is vital. This also gives us a spot to find them tomorrow. A place we can rely on them to be….

From a design stand point, boot benches and drop zones are 2 of the biggest priorities most homeowners ask for. When designed properly, the boot bench can act as a place to sit as well as easy storage for jackets, scarves, hats, gloves and certainly boots. We typically tile this area and have in some applications, installed in floor drains with heated floors to help get rid of the melting snow that is brought in.

Secondly, a drop zone or an area to set your keys, hand bag and mobile devices is on the top of the list. These are often small 24-36” wide counter spaces that might incorporate a drawer to store charging devices, notepad and paper and such. It is set in a place that is accessible from the active parts of the house (kitchen or laundry), but serves to prevent the kitchen counter from getting cluttered with these items.

So, when the temperatures start to rise and the birds start to sing, look at your entry into your home and see if a boot bench or drop zone could lend some organization and freshen up your space.

The phrase “Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans” couldn’t be more true for Brett and Karen Able. Brett even retired for a whole five days before taking a job in China. Karen says that she and Brett, Indiana natives, are “simple Midwest, who didn’t have that Wanderlust.” But right out of college Brett started to work for Dow Corning in Midland, and the world just opened up. Their family’s journey is documented

on a canvas made as a gift from their two grown children; it proudly hangs on the wall in their newly built custom home.

Here’s how it goes. It starts in Fort Wayne to Midland, Elizabethtown, and Snowberry, Connecticut via Fairfax, Virginia. Then over to Brussels, back to Midland via Tokyo, throw in little Traverse City, a hop, skip and jump to Shanghai, then to the windy city of Chicago, Morristown and finally ending at Paradise Found: Long Lake!

That’s quite a wild ride. Where is their favorite place? “Probably Europe, because my kids were little and the family was all together,” says Karen, “But China was an adventure!”

So after years of exotic globetrotting, experiencing cultures, food, language, and worldly sights of which most can only imagine, the Northern Michigan allure in all its wonder stole their hearts. On the shores of beautiful Long Lake their new chapter unfolds as Karen and Brett chose to fulfill their lifelong dream by building their forever home right here.

“We knew we wanted water frontage,” says Karen, and when they found this little spot it just spoke to them. “It was 100 feet frontage with an original 1934 cottage. ‘It’s got possibilities,’ we said,” recalls Karen. They considered a remodel, but it made a lot more sense to just start completely from scratch. That’s when they enlisted the terrific husband-and-wife team of Mike and Robin Collings of MAC Custom Homes.

“I wanted to be included in all the decisions every step of the way,” Karen explains, “and sadly the neighbor next door passed away but it gave us the opportunity to live here onsite.” Karen and Brett spent 18 months living in excited anticipation. They finally moved in just in time for their family’s big Thanksgiving Dinner.

Karen is an interior designer who adores homes and architecture. While in the designing phases, she visited a friend who gushed she had to see a house in Kentucky with an open beam concept; Karen loved it and incorporated the look in their own house.

“We wanted a classic look that would be timeless, with big gathering rooms,”

says Karen. “A lot of built-ins too were on my wish list, and I had to have a fireplace—although I think we ended up with four! And being a retirement home, we wanted a complete first level.”

Rooms with a view of course where high on the list, too, including the kitchen stunningly designed by Angela and Mike Goodall of Kitchen Choreography. “I like to cook, but I wouldn’t say I’m a great cook,”

laughs Karen. But she does love her kitchen, with room enough for the entire family at the breakfast bar. The kitchen also boasts spectacular coiffured ceilings that add the highly dramatic “wow” factor. Karen says, “Mike and his team are amazing with the details. Any idea I had, they figured it out.”

Attention to detail is prevalent throughout the entire house. The carpentry and finishing touches are simply dazzling.

Downstairs opens up to a huge screen TV room with a sectional leather couch to fit around 50! (Maybe a little less.) There is a pool table framed by sliding doors that open to the lake, and the downstairs comes complete with its own gourmet kitchen area. Oh, and did I mention the Ables’ own private wine cellar area? “My daughter and son-in-law are the winos,” Karen jokingly says.

Delicate hues adorn the walls in shades of coastal blue and grey. Karen’s fun eye to detail includes eclectic wallpaper on many ceilings, recycled light fixtures, olive baskets and minnow buckets, and even a trough light over the pool table. There’s unexpected barn wood on the ceiling, creating a beachy feel, and faux painted finishes to look like driftwood. Porthole mirrors even hang on the walls in the guest bathroom.

The crown jewel of this stunning home may catch you by surprise. It’s not the grand piano that overlooks the water or their four season relaxing room, not the heated floor his-and-hers bathroom, not Brett’s safari-inspired office or even Karen’s beloved craft room—nope!

It’s the especially dedicated entire wing of the house named Camp Grandma! (Really, there is a sign on the wall complete with five adorable handprints!)

IIt even has its own Beach entrance. “I hope to train the kids,” says Grandma Karen. A nautical banister rope leads the way upstairs to the kids’ very own living room, den and huge bedroom with giant custom, nautical-themed bunk beds hand-built by Mike and his team.

Camp Grandma is lovingly decorated in reclaimed wood, a cuddly bear skin on the floor.Even the bathroom is throwback vintage kid camp, with a pebble floor and barn wood cabinet (filled with bug spray and sunscreen, I’m sure).

So you see, you can travel all around the world but home is always where your heart is. For Karen and Brett, this is captured by the simple sign in their living room: “All you need is Love and a Sunset.” We’ll add on Perfect Long Lake.
