TIA-568-C define Cat 5e, Cat 6, Cat 6a

Emphasize that in order to “certify”, one must have a estándar. And
estándares are only estándares because a great number de people in
the Industria accept y abide by them.
Another reason to emphasize the importance de estándares es the
fact that some users would like the tester to make all its testing
decisions based on just the vendor y model number de the cabling to
be tested. The TIA (Telecommunications Industry Association)
estándares we will discuss differentiate between different enlace
types con different pass/fail criteria. There are several
estándares y we support a large variety de them in the DSP Series
testers.

In order to understand which test Parámetros should be tested or
the reason para a certain selection de Parámetros we can revisit
the model that was underlying the rendimiento especificaciones para
Cat 5.
In all de the older red aplicaciones -- we can now call them legacy
systems -- the underlying transmisión model made the assumption
that all wire pairs were to be used in one direction (half duplex).
Typically only two wire pairs were needed to establish a
connection. The graphic in this slides shows that each wire pair es
used in one direction. This model applies to Ethernet (10BASE-T or
100BASE-T), Token Ring, ATM 155 y just about everything else that
may now be obsolete. If we speak about a full duplex Ethernet
switch we indicate that the switch can receive y transmit at the
same time but the physical layer y the use de the cable pairs
remains as indicated in this slide.

This slide shows the impact de diafonía when more than 1 señal in
the cable es transmitted in the same direction y at the same
time.
1000Base-T uses four pairs transmitting simultaneously in either
direction, but para now lets use this simplified diagram using two
pairs to illustrate FEXT or Far End Cross Talk
señal 1 y señal 2 travel from the Estación to the LAN Hub. señal 2
couples into señal 1’s wire pair along the length de the enlace, y
causes noise at it’s receiver. (Likewise, señal 1 couples into the
wire-pair de señal 2.)
At the LAN Hub para señal 1 receiver, the desired señal es the
attenuated output from the Estación. The undesired señal es the
diafonía coming from señal 2 wire pair. This es diafonía introduced
from the FAR END or Far End Cross Talk.
Again, using the telephone call analogy, if you have ever heard
another conversation on the line, you have experienced cross
talk.
con 100Base-T, this es not a concern as only two pairs are used.
One sending one way, one sending in the other direction.
*
Efecto de los 3 pares perturbadores = Power Sum
Power Sum ELFEXT
*
ELFEXT es simply the difference between the FEXT señal y the
attenuated señal at the receiver. ELFEXT es simply how much the
FEXT señal es present compared to the attenuated señal.
ELFEXT = FEXT - Atenuación y es an indicator de the señal to noise
ratio a 100Base-T receiver can expect.
ELFEXT es like ACR:
ACR = NEXT - Atenuación y was an indicator de the señal to noise
ratio a 100Base-T receiver could expect.
Generally, the requisitos related to FEXT will be stated in terms
de ELFEXT.
ELFEXT stands para “Equal Level Far End diafonía”. The words “Equal
Level” are used to indicate that all FEXT señales are to be
considered con the same Atenuación. No matter where a diafonía
contribution occurs in the enlace, it es always attenuated by
roughly the same amount.
*
Recibe
Transmite
*
Full duplex transmisión es “bi-directional” similar to a typical
telephone conversation. You y the other party can speak at once,
yet hear each other’s words. This es due to a circuit in the
telephone called a “hybrid” that reduces the volume de your own
voice by canceling the señal it knows es being sent from your
microphone. However, if there es a problem on the line y your voice
bounces back, the volume de your return voice es not reduced y you
may not clearly hear what the other party es saying.
This es called a “reflection” y es caused by an impedance mismatch
along the way. The further away the mismatch, the longer the period
de the delay in your voice being heard.
These reflections caused by impedance mismatches are only a concern
con full-duplex transmisión.

Explain the tighter test limits in Cat 6 con respect to Cat
5e.
Addendum 5
Cat 6
Cabling Requirements for 10GBASE-T
The signal-to-noise budget analysis is complex and consists of two
types of disturbances:
‘In-channel’ disturbances – Initially set to ISO/IEC 11801
Class E limits extended to 500 MHz
(Class E/Cat 6 defined from 1 to 250 MHz)
Certify with the DTX-1800 “as is”
‘Between-Channel’ disturbances for Crosstalk referred to as “Alien
Crosstalk”
Requires the DTX-10GKIT accessory package
Certify with the DTX-1800, DTX-10GKIT and a PC (laptop)
*
The cabling requirements for 10GBASE-T are based on Signal-To-Noise
Ratio (SNR) considerations:
Obviously the lower the insertion loss, the better the SNR
is.
It is possible to “echo” cancel the reflections from internal
parameters NEXT (40 dB), FEXT (25 dB), and return loss (55 dB)
using digital signal processing techniques.
It is NOT possible to cancel the external noise from other channels
in close proximity, since the signals are uncorrelated to the
signals in a particular disturbed channel.
As a result the overall SNR of a 10GBASE-T transmission system is
dominated by the external (alien NEXT and FEXT) noise.
*
Combined affects of all 3 disturbing pairs = Power Sum
In-Channel: 7 Noise Sources - Disturbances
Combined NEXT disturbance from 3 wire-pairs: PSNEXT
Return Loss on same wire-pair
Combined FEXT disturbance from 3 wire-pairs: PSELFEXT
*
ELFEXT is simply the difference between the FEXT signal and the
attenuated signal at the receiver. ELFEXT indicates how much FEXT
disturbance is present compared to the attenuated signal.
ELFEXT = FEXT - attenuation and is an indicator of the signal to
noise ratio a 100BASE-T receiver can expect.
ELFEXT is like ACR:
ACR = NEXT - attenuation and was an indicator of the signal to
noise ratio a 100Base-T receiver could expect.
Generally, the requirements related to FEXT will be stated in terms
of ELFEXT.
ELFEXT stands for “Equal Level Far End Crosstalk”. The words “Equal
Level” are used to indicate that all FEXT signals are to be
considered with the same attenuation. No matter where a crosstalk
contribution occurs in the link, it is always attenuated by roughly
the same amount.
*
Testing the “In-Channel” Cabling Parameters
Really, nothing new for DTX-1800:
Test the installed links as you always have tested them
But with the appropriate test standard

ISO/IEC) must be applied.
Victim Link
*
This slide needs a few words of explanation. It refers back to the
note in slide #4 where we mention that 10GBASE-T must operate with
FEXT cancellation. Cancellation is not really the proper term, it
is a power back-off mechanism in the 10GBASE-T standard that
compensates for a situation that would make the transmission
impossible. This slide demonstrates that transmission would be
impossible if two adjacent cables with very different lengths
arrive next to each other going into the patch panel at one end of
the link.
The signal in the longer link has undergone a significant amount of
attenuation when it joins the shorter link in the bundle. The
signal of the shorter link at that point of joining is still
“fresh’ and in full strength. The effect of the FEXT coupling on
the longer link by the shorter one is therefore overpowering. The
AFEXT at the receiver end of the longer link would totally over
power the desired signal and transmission would fail. Therefore,
the transmitter at the right-hand side of the shorter link must
power back based on the signal strength measured by the receiver at
the other side. This is a part of the link initialization routine
in 10GBASE-T. If a receiver detects a very strong signal indicating
that the link is short, it will send a command back to the
transmitter to “throttle back” until the signal level falls within
acceptable limits. This prevents the FEXT coming form a shorter
link like the one in the figure to totally overpower the
transmission on a adjacent longer link.

The most Genérico model de the end-to-end enlace allows para two
conexiones near either end de the instalado enlace. This allow para
a cross-connect patch panel in the telecommunication room (Floor
distributor) y para a “Consolidation point” or MUTO near the work
area.
Many enlace implementations only use one connection in the Telecom
Room; the connecting arrangements in this case es called
“interconnect” rather than cross-connect. The configuración that
incluye a CP has become very popular con the deployment de modular
office walls (“cubicle farms”)y flexible office space arrangements.
The use de a CP connection provides flexibility when the modular
furniture (or “cubicles”) are to be rearranged. The cabling only
needs to be dismantled y then reinstalado to the CP rather than
having to be reinstalado or rerouted from the Telecom Room.
The maximum length de this end-to-end enlace es 100 m while the
maximum length de the horizontal cable (excluding the latiguillos
at either end) es 90 m.
*
La Medida de Canal
Latiguillo de equipa-miento
*
Let’s begin by reviewing the enlace definitions existing in cabling
estándares.
The first enlace model es called the Canal. The Canal (which used
to be called the “User’s enlace” at one point in time) es the
end-to-end enlace which connects a red station (PC, Estación,
printer, server, etc.) to the red (Hub, MAU, or wiring
concentrator). This, de course, es the enlace that the end-user es
interested in on an ongoing basis.

*
The third model used para evaluating the instalado sistema de
cableado es called the Enlace Permanente .
The Enlace Permanente contains up to 90 m de horizontal cable con
possible a consolidation point near the work area end. The Enlace
Permanente es terminated con a telecommunication wall roseta at on
one end y the patch panel termination on the other end. This enlace
incluye the building infraestructura portion (from patch panel in
the wiring closet to wall rosetas in the work areas) para which a
cable installer es typically held responsible. The test limits para
this enlace differ from the basic enlace in that the effect de the
patch cables con which the tester es connected to the enlace es to
be excluded from the Medidas.
*
Enlace Perm. Compatible
*
The reason to emphasize the Enlace Permanente model para testing es
the fact that the tester patch cable or tester interface cable can
y will make an undesirable contribution to the Medida resultados as
we will explain in this presentation. Special precautions in test
Equipamiento design y test algorithms must be implemented.
Furthermore, the basic idea y major benefit de this test evaluation
es that after the “Enlace Permanente ” meets the specified
requisitos the user can add “good” latiguillos y be guaranteed that
the end-to-end enlace will meet the Canal specs. “Good latiguillos”
means latiguillos that pass the category rendimiento
especificaciones as outlined in the TIA Estándares.
*

*
The definition de the Enlace Permanente es NOT ideal as far as
taking all variability totally out de test resultados. As already
stated, the mated connection at the patch panel y at the
telecommunication wall roseta in the work area are included in the
Enlace Permanente model. The Enlace Permanente es bound by these
mated conexiones as indicated in the schematic representation in
the slide. Furthermore since these conexiones are placed as the
first element at the beginning de the Medida, their influence on
the test resultados es huge!
When testing an instalación, the unknown or the elements to be
tested include the rendimiento de the jacks at beginning y end, the
quality de the termination at these jacks y the quality de the
total Enlace Permanente . Since the end-jack es the unknown, the
plug at the end de the tester interface cable must be the
“estándar” to judge the rendimiento de the jack as it will in the
Canal interface con a good patch cable.
That es the reason Fluke Networks developed a “centered” Cat 6 plug
(Personality Module) para the Enlace Permanente test.
*

*
This plug has not been constructed as older personality modules
were con the end de a patch cable. The plug wire-pair termination
de a latiguillo delivers too much variability in NEXT as well as
pérdida de retorno; furthermore, the manufacturing process to
terminate these wires onto the personality’s circuit board
introduces more variability.
Instead, the PM06 es implemented on a circuit board con very
carefully designed traces that in the productoion process yield
very stable NEXT y pérdida de retorno rendimiento from unit to
unit.

Here we show the test configuracións para the Canal (which es the
end-to-end enlace configuración), the old-fashioned basic enlace, y
the Enlace Permanente (which has existed para a long time in
international estándares, y recently has been adopted para all new
TIA estándares).
The Canal configuración may include an opciónal consolidation point
(CP) as well as a cross-connect (C1/C2) or four possible
conexiones.
The basic enlace es very basic indeed: only the conectores at the
two ends de the instalado cable are allowed in the basic enlace,
but the point de Medida starts near the field tester y ends near
the field tester remote unit at the other end de the enlace.
Therefore, the cable in the basic enlace Adaptador es part de what
es measured y reported. When you change the basic enlace Adaptador,
you may get a different result, which es perfectly legal.
*
Alien NEXT (ANEXT) Measurement
Requires a synchronization communication module in the Main and
Remote test units.
Channel under test
*
This slide shows the principle of an alien NEXT measurement between
two channels.
The synchronization between the field tester main and remote units
in this configuration is provided by a plug-in module that fits
into the field tester units. These synchronization modules are to
be connected by a regular Category 5e or Category 6 link. In the
case of the ANEXT measurement as shown in this slide a patch cord
is the obvious choice to establish the synch connection.
Note that the end of the links-under-test need to be terminated
with a special plug that provides 100 Ohm termination on each wire
pair (differential termination) with a 50 Ohm connection to common
to avoid reflections from the far end.
To be completely correct for a channel measurement, the far-end
should show the system patch cords in place with a termination jack
at the end of the patch cords.
Note that using a golden patch cords to go around and make channel
measurements violates the spirit and intent of the standards.
Either measure the performance of the permanent link model
(excludes the effect of the connection between tester and
link-under-test) or use the actual system patch cords that will be
used during network operation.

Detailed Instructions:
Switch to the Autotest function y press the Test button. Autotest
will run all de the tests required by the chosen estándar. The
Smart remote will automatically run the various tests from the far
end de the cable as required by the estándar. The figure shows all
de these tests Pass y are within required limits. If there were a
failure, a red “X” would be placed next to the específico test that
failed. By selecting a particular test y pressing Enter, you can
drill down to obtain more details about the test resultados. The
wire map can be viewed graphically, the length values can be seen y
a graphical plot de the required test Parámetros can be viewed
including the limit y actual measured values as a function de
frequency.
The headroom number es de particular interest. Remember that
estándares define a MINIMUM rendimiento requisito. A simple
pass/fail tells you very little about the quality de the enlace.
The headroom number shows how much better the enlace performs
compared to the estándar. The larger the number, the better the
rendimiento de the enlace.

Describe the capabilities de the DTX to allow transport de the test
data using a removal memory card.
The memory cards are reusable. Upon completion de a job or when the
card es full, the card can be easily removed from the test tool y
dropped off at (or mailed to) the office para processing de the
stored test data. The Fluke Networks LinkWare Software controls the
process de downloading test resultados from the memory card. The
memory card can be formatted – much like a floppy disk – to be
reused in the DTX.

Defining Cable ID Fields
In this Import Wizard dialog box you define which cable ID
characters were used to represent the elements in the cabling
instalación. The Import Wizard uses the characters in each ID to
place the record at the correct level in the database
structure.
Use the following delimiter to separate the cable ID fields
Choose this opción if the cable ID fields are separated by dashes,
slashes, periods, or any other delimiter (para Ejemplo C.A5.23).
Enter the delimiter in the box. If the IDs use more than one type
de delimiter, use the other opción.
After you enter the delimiter, use the Field Number boxes to define
which ID field represents which element in the instalación. You do
not need to define fields para all the elements listed.
Define location de the characters para each field in the cable
ID
Choose this opción if the cable ID fields are not separated by a
delimiter (para Ejemplo, CA523), or if the IDs use more than one
type de delimiter (para Ejemplo, C/A5-23).
Use the Position de First Character y Number de Characters boxes to
define the positions y lengths de cable ID fields. You do not need
to define fields para all the elements listed.
para Ejemplo, para the cable ID C/A5-23, where "C" es the room,
"A5" es the rack, y "23" es the patch, you would set the character
positions as follows:
Room C

Defectos NEXT y NEXT
Near End Cross Talk (NEXT)
Combinaciones plug/jack pobremente encajadas
Malos conectores
Mal cable
Pares divididos
*
*
fallos NEXT (conector, cable, TP/CP)
cableado
Las causas de RL incluyen:
La impedancia del latiguillo no es de 100
Destrenzado o dobladuras en el cable –
el trenzado original se debería mantener
Malos conectores
La impedancia del cable no es uniforme

Blue Cable - Multiple Failures: NEXT, pérdida de retorno
NOTE: It es critical that the students separate the wires as shown
to get a pérdida de retorno failure in addition to diafonía. If the
wires are too close to one another, you will get a wire map failure
(split pair diagnostics based upon excessive diafonía
Medida).
The goal de this exercise es to get a pérdida de retorno failure y
demonstrate how to read the HDTDR graph. Since the tester reports
failures in alphabetical order, the first typical failure will be
NEXT. After pressing the Fault Info button, the student will be
able to press the up arrow key y view the various failures.
Review the HDTDR plot y point out the following (left to
right):
A typical conector reflection. The small positive pulse
followed con an equal y opposite negative pulse shows
the transition at the connection point.
Excessive reflections halfway through the cable due to
impedance variation caused by the separated wires.
Another typical conector reflection.

(p.ej., dobleces, malas conexiones, malos empalmes)
