Hey Division 6, I hope everyone’s enjoying their summer! Summer is a well-earned break from school and it’s the perfect time to hang out with friends and family, or make a few extra bucks at that job you’ve always wanted. Summer is also the perfect time to get out and volunteer so make some plans with your fellow Key Clubbers and change the world! If you haven’t already heard, this year’s International Convention took place in Orlando, Florida earlier this month. I had the honor of attending the convention and it was one of the greatest trips I’ve ever been on! If you want to read all the details check out the ICON article later on in the newsletter. I would like to congratulate the hard-working secretaries and presidents of the division for submitting their Election Report Forms on time! Although the division did a great job with their ERFs, Monthly Report Form submissions have been low. MRFs should be

Governor’s Greeting

Governor Daniel

Hello New York District Key Clubbers,

This is Governor Daniel Ivan Lin and I hope you are all having an amazing summer. Just a few weeks ago, I had the honor of representing the New York District with more than fifty other Key Clubbers at this year’s International Convention. The experience was nothing short of great as we celebrated the merits of our organization and all that we have accomplished in a service year. With the election of our new international board, I would like to congratulate Jack Vielhauer in his election as international trustee. If you haven’t done so already, please subscribe to the district mailing list. You can do so through the district website. There’s more to come.

Yours in the Spirit of Service, District Governor Daniel Ivan Lin

Secretary’s Greeting

Secretary Amber

Hey New York District Key Club, The New York District has just come back from having a great and memorable time in Orlando, Florida for the 2012 International Convention. It was not only a memorable experience, but also an acknowledging experience as I brought back so many wonderful ideas to share with all of you. I will soon be releasing a video on the ICON experience within next month. With that said, I have a few reminders for everyone, especially club secretaries. All election report forms are due on August 5th, 2012. Please speak to your Lieutenant Governor about this or contact me. Also, all monthly report forms are due the seventh of each month. Please do not forget to submit those; Key Club does continue during the summer. I have recently released a newsletter for secretaries, welcomed to be read by all Key Clubbers. It is called “The Secretarial Periodical” Please refer to this link: http://tinyurl.com/c2bhmbm. Secretaries should be on a lookout to be invited to a Google email group based on their election report form so if you don’t want to miss this out, don’t forget to submit them. Don’t forget to be on the lookout for new minutes and videos! Hope you are all having a wonderful summer.

Yours in the spirit of purity and service, Amber Lee

Bulletin Editor’s Greeting

Editor Holy

Hello New York District Key Clubbers,

I am your District Editor Holy Cheong and I am thrilled to say this summer has hit off to a good start! Although I would like to be bombarded with emails of service spotlights and articles I am glad to say I received several for the summer issue of The Empire Key. Be prepared fellow Key Clubbers! This newsletter may knock off your socks.

Keep in mind that service spotlights are very important. They give key clubbers the chance to tell everyone what they have done to help their community and we want to acknowledge and thank them for their hard work. With that said, please send me service spotlights! Not only will they be published in the newsletter but they will also be posted on the District website.

Yours in the Spirit of Service, District Bulletin Editor Holy Cheong

International Convention

At this year’s International Convention, New York District Key Club toured the many Disney Parks found in Orlando. We visited Epcott, MGM Studios, Animal Kingdom, and Magic Kingdom; each park more magical than the next! My favorite part of the trip was the “behind the scenes tour” of Animal Kingdom. New York was the only District to go on this tour and we saw how the park operates day-to-day. With the help of a tour guide, we saw the buildings where the animals go at night and where the staff prepares the food for the many different species found in the park.. We learned about some of the steps Disney has taken in order to become a “green” company and of course, we went on all the rides. Seeing as I’m a rollercoaster fanatic, Expedition Everest was my favorite rides in Animal Kingdom; so much so that I rode it twice!

This year’s International Convention wasn’t all about Disney. There were informative workshops, a long House of Delegates Session, and the election of the 2012-2013 International Board. At the House of Delegates, two representatives from each club vote on proposed amendments to the Key Club International Bylaws. Delegates also vote for the positions of International President, International Vice President, and the 13 International Trustees.

The 2012 International Convention was an event I’m never going to forget! I not only learned about how to be a better Lieutenant Governor, but I also learned about new service opportunities and charities. ICON is something everyone should experience and I hope to see some more Division 6 members at next year’s ICON is Washington DC!

My ICON Experience

IPP Jasmine Blennau

Hey Division 6! Attending ICON 2012 this year was an experience that made me see Key Club, and service in general, in a totally new and invigorated way.

The NYDKC Tour was incredible because before ICON actually started, Key Clubbers from all over New York got a chance to travel and bond as a district! Although some of us were already acquainted with each other from LTC, there were many new friends to make. From early morning breakfasts in the suite to midnight curfews we were always together. The NYDKC Tour allowed LTG Paul, IP Governor Domenick, and I to spend time with Key Clubbers from the city, upstate, and all over Long Island.

Because ICON was held at Disney this year, the NYDKC Tour was exploring the Disney parks! We went on the Tower of Terror, Rockin Roller Coaster, and even the scary Dinosaur ride… The memories we made and the pictures we brought home were worth everything. <3

When International Convention started we met Key Clubbers from all over the world! I was so surprised at how many kids were actually there. Key Club is SO HUGE, and that is why I think it’s important to have our Key Clubbers see the way International works. ICON is like LTC but on a whole new level. There were workshops about really cool organizations like Save the Rain and Hershey Track and Field Games. These workshops were to get the word out about new service and fundraising ideas. ICON is also where Key Clubbers vote for International Officers and about the KCI bylaws.

So many things happen on the International level and if you want to be a part of something bigger than yourself, something wondrously influential in our world, I strongly encourage you to really give the K-Family a chance. If I could go back I would have become more involved in Key Club sooner.

Key Club International Convention will change the way you see your district, your division, your club, and yourself. If you are young and you want to see LTC or ICON for yourself please talk to your advisors and Kiwanians about it. They want to help you, and they want you to attend he many Key Club conventions. I owe this ICON to Levittown Kiwanis because they have always had my back. The Kiwanians will always have our backs, so please don’t be afraid to ask them for help.

I love you all like you wouldn’t believe. Good luck this school year and keep D6 the strongest, closest division there is. If you ever need anything feel free to contact me at Stonybrook Circle K !

Yours in friendship and service,

Jasmine Blennau IPP Division Avenue

LTC 2013

LTG Paul De Santis

Although it’s many months away, the 2013 Leadership Training Conference is something you should start thinking about! I would like for at least a few members from each club to attend LTC and represent our Division. LTC is a great opportunity to meet Key Clubbers from all around the mighty New York District and to learn how to be a better member or officer.

LTC 2013 will be held at the Holiday Inn in Albany (205 Wolf Road, Albany, NY 12205) from March 22- March 24. The cost for students will be $270, the cost for adults will be $310, and the price for a single room for adults will be $500 (single rooms for adults will be scarce).

LTC is much cheaper than International Convention, but it’s just as fun, so members, officers, and faculty advisors are all encouraged to attend. See you there!

Camp Old Navy

Hey everyone! My name is Jade Blennau and I’m the Vice President of Division Avenue Key Club.

On July 18th, four Key Clubbers from Division Six participated in the annual "Camp Old Navy" event in Levittown. This day of "Camp" included training by Levittown Old Navy's

Service and Training Manager Stacey Engebrethson. Stacy brought the Key Clubbers through an average working day at Old Navy. LTG Paul DeSantis, Division Avenue Key Club IPP Jasmine Blennau, East Meadow High School VP Anusha Syed, and I all had a great time.

All participants worked closely with the Old Navy staff, learning necessary customer

communication and store organization skills. The experience included fun filled competitions such as a "Flip Flop Race", and a "Shopping Contest". The races brought out the Key

Clubbers' competitive nature while also learning managerial skills needed to be a part of the well trained Old Navy staff. This year’s "Camp Old Navy" was said to be one of the best in years! The event's wonderful success also included a $250 Grant to Division Six Key Club! LTG

Paul has chosen to donate the money to Kiwanis International's Eliminate Project.
