VIER mense, onder wie n tweejari-

ge seuntjie, is Maandagoggend in n

    grusame ongeluk naby Kathu dood

toe die bestuurder met hul swart

BMW 325i teen n ho spoed oor n

T-aansluiting gery het en die motor

in die veld beland het waar dit

    gerol het.

THE police would like to issue a warning

that dam drownings are not unfamiliar and

parents are warned to make sure that their

children are safe and are under adult

    supervision.

During the summer the temperatures in

the Northern Cape soar to extreme levels

and children go to dams to cool off. It has

been noted that children are rarely supervi-

sed by an adult and often get in trouble

when swimming. This results in them

    drowning.

We appeal to parents to be vigilant in

    taking precautionary measures by safeguar-

    ding their children against drowning.

Always keep the gates to the swimming pool

locked; it is important that swimming pools

be enclosed or covered with safety nets.

Parents must know where their children are

at all times and should never give permis-

sion to their children to swim in dams that

    are not safe and unsupervised.

People are cautioned to refrain from

swimming while they are under the

influence of liquor as many past drownings

occurred while people were under the

    influence of intoxicating substances. The

police are appealing to the public to take

heed of these warnings so as to prevent the

loss of lives which can be avoided.

    TOE Hannelie van

    Graan (38) op 8

    Augustus in n

    ambulansongeluk op

    die pad tussen

    Kuruman en Danil-

    skuil dood is, was sy

    die derde lid van die

    Bester-familie wat in

    drie weke gesterf het.

    Van Graan het erge

    komplikasies gehad

    nadat sy die hele

    week griep gehad het.

    Hulle kon die betrokke

dag nie n dokter kry nie

en het die plaaslike hospitaal besoek, wat

    haar teen ontwatering behandel het.

Sy is na die Mediclinic Kathu verwys

waar sy ook behandel en gestabiliseer is,

maar is weens haar toestand toe na

    Kimberley verwys. n Ambulans van

Kuruman het haar vervoer toe die ambu-

lans ongeveer 10 km buite Kuruman op die

Danilskuilpad die pad verlaat en teen n

    afdraande af is.

    sou binnekort haar kwalifikasie ontvang.

Sy het op 2 Augustus 38 jaar oud geword.

Die begrafnis is verlede Vrydag uit die

    NG kerk in Postmasburg gehou.

se man, Hennie Pretorius (45), is op 2

    kies jou.

Geen wonder nie dit is n beeld

van die Kerk wat die Bybel self

    gebruik. Die hele evangelie van

Johannes sien die kerk as n ge-

EFESIRS 2:19: Julle is dus nie

meer ver van God af nie, nie

    bywoners nie, maar medeburgers

van die gelowiges en lede van die

    huisgesin van God.

Daar is mos n sding jy kan

jou vriende kies, maar nie jou

    familie nie. Familie wees gebeur

as deel van die lewe met jou. Dit

    is deel van verhoudings en

    verhoudings bly altyd uitdagende

    dinge.

    Ons kan nie daarsonder lewe

nie, maar soms wens ons ons kan

op daardie dae wanneer jy en

    jou eggenoot baklei, die kinders

minder gaaf teenoor jou is, jou

    medewerkers jou wantrou en selfs

die mense in die winkel waarin jy

    koop, onvriendelik is, lyk die

    moontlikhede van n kluisenaar se

    lewe ewe skielik aanloklik.

    Daardie eerste verhoudings met

gesinslede is anders as al die

    ander verhoudings wat n mens

ooit sal h. Saam skep dit ons

    eerste tuiste, ons huis.

Ek dink soms God het die gesin

geskep as n oefenplek om ons

voor te berei om in ander instan-

sies te kan funksioneer. Die gesin

is die een plek waar jy geen

keuse het nie; jy word daarin

gebore en die gevolg is ons is

    Ongelukke

    wek kommer

    PADSTERFTES en ongelukke is al

die afgelope paar jaar n groot bron

van kommer vir inwoners van die

    Noord-Kaap.

Maandag is vier mense in n

    ongeluk oorlede. Daar was sewe

mense in die motor. Die ander drie

    passasiers het net ligte beserings

    opgedoen.

    Volgens statistieke wat deur

ER24 uitgereik is, word baie van

    die ongelukke aan die misbruik

    van alkohol toegeskryf.

    Die ander redes vir ongelukke

    wissel van nalatige bestuur en

mense wat aan die slaap raak tot

mense wat ongeduldig raak en dan

    ander voertuie onverskillig

    verbysteek.

Die afgelope paar maande het n

    voertuig naby Danilskuil met twee

insittendes gerol nadat dit n bees

getref het. Albei mense is op die

    toneel oorlede.

    Naby Kuruman was twee voer-

tuie in n botsing reg van voor

betrokke n man is oorlede en vyf

    ander mense het verskeie ligte

    beserings opgedoen. Nog n

passasier was n die ongeluk in n

    kritieke toestand, maar het oorleef.

Op die pad van Kuruman na

Hotazel is een man oorlede en n

ander een erg beseer nadat twee

    vragmotors en n kleiner voertuig

    gebots het.

    Grondpaaie in die Noord-Kaap is

oor die algemeen in n baie slegte

toestand daar is f te veel los

sand op die paaie, f slaggate.

Diere en vee wat oor die paaie

loop, bring ook gevaar vir motorbe-

    stuurders mee.

voortgegaan. Want daar is mos nog

baie tyd. So salig het ons aange-

    is mos lank.

    Nou moet genoem word, omdat

ek en my man relatief vermoeiende

beroepe het en ons nog probeer om

ons driejarige sonder te veel skade

groot te maak, vergeet ons soms

    onbedoelende van hoe die regte

    wreld werk.

Die week voor die Groot Trek

(hoewel die nuwe huis eintlik net

2 km van die ou huis af is) begin

    die massiewe werklikheid van die

    omstandighede ons aan die hart

    vat.

    Nou moet dinge begin gebeur.

Ons moet pro-aktief raak. Maar toe

raak dit naweek en ons besluit om

    eerder die Maandag pro-aktief te

raak. Min wetende die einde van n

maand is die tyd wanneer almal

wat gaan trek, trek. En almal het

bokse nodig. En omtrent almal was

meer pro-aktief as ons en het klaar

die meeste van Kathu se bokse

    opgeraap.

Twee dae voor die tyd onthou my

man van die waentjie en danksy

onverdiende genade van Bo kry hy

gelukkig een gerel. So sit ons die

    my boeke toegeken totdat my

    pragmatiese man noem die breek-

goed sal eintlik meer baat n

    beskermende boks vind.

Die dag van die trek staan ons

voor die son op. Dit was nie

moeilik nie, want die lug was vol

swaar renwolke. Met een oog op

    die onheilspellende wolke begin ons

    soos besetenes die waentjie pak.

Daar is n rede hoekom mense s

trek is nie vir sissies nie. Deur

die loop van die dag is verskeie

    kere kleurryke uitdrukkings

    n PAAR maande gelede het

    die Kuruman-buurtwag nog

    in sy babaskoene gestaan en

    die gemeenskap van

    Kuruman is versoek om

    hulle by die buurtwag aan

te sluit misdaad in Kuruman het geweldig

    toegeneem.

Daar was geen ander oplossing nie as dat

die inwoners van Kuruman self inspring en

    misdaadvoorkoming toepas.

Nou het die buurtwag blitsvinnig van baba

na grootmens gegroei die tienerstadium is

    sommer heeltemal uitgesluit.

Daar is nou meer as 200 lede met radios in

hul voertuie wat verskeie sektore in Kuru-

man patrolleer. Baie suksesse is reeds met

hul nagpatrollies behaal, maar daar kan nog

meer gedoen word indien elke huisgesin n

    radio aanskaf.

gekeer. Die afgelope naweek is gesteelde

artikels weer in die veld gevind.

After the need was identified to accom-

    modate more local children, Mashedi

contacted the GDF in 2012 for financial

    assistance.

The organisation funded the project and

helped to establish the Ya Yona Daycare

    Centre as it is today.

    It accommodates approximatley 180

    children daily.

    It employs nine full-time teaching

THE Assmang Khumani Iron Ore Mine

held an appreciation ceremony for the

    members of its SocioEconomic Develop-

ment (SED) department. This was held on

14 August at the Kalahari Country Club.

    The SED department excelled in

reaching its yearly target by spending

94% of its annual budget allocated for

    community projects.

    According to Princess Thwala of

    executive stakeholder relations at African

Rainbow Minerals, the efforts of this

    department shows that the Assmang

Khumani Mine is committed to helping

the community in which it operates.

Your efforts at SED contribute to the

    general improvement of South African

lives. You are the ones that help those

without the means to help themselves.

    David Selemo, Assmang Khumani

    Mines senior general manager, thanked

the department for continued efforts to

ensure positive change in the community.

What we do as a mine is not always

just about mining rocks. We give back to

    the community. The SED departments

heart is in the right place, because you

    are a community builder.

    Tumelo Dilotsotlhe, manager of socio

    economic development at Assmang

Khumani, said Assmang Khumani was a

    system of departments supporting each

other in order to maintain a successful

    operation.

    One department functioning and

meeting a target depends on the success

of the business as a whole. This translates

to communities benefitting from our SED

projects and shows that Assmang Khuma-

ni is truly a responsible corporate

    citizen.

    The SED department members were

treated to a meal and received apprecia-

tion gifts from the Assmang Khumani

    Mine management.

ON 13 August the Assmang Khumani Mine

held a community skills training certificate

ceremony for the students who graduated

    from the respective programmes.

    Assmang Khumani Mines Socio-economic

    Development (SED) department, in partner-

ship with the South African Institute for

    Entrepreneurship, Tsebo Enterprise Deve-

    lopment and 4Phil, sponsored multi-discipli-

nary work skills programmes for the

    students.

    Several local students received Seta-accre-

dited certificates in a variety of disciplines.

Elrinda Rost was the programme director

for the event and congratulated the students

    on their commitment and achievements.

    Tumelo Dilotsotlhe, Assmang Khumanis

    SED manager, welcomed the private

institutions who participated in the training

    as well as the recipients.

This day wouldnt be a success without

you, the graduates. Thank you for recogni-

sing the need to invest in yourself. You, the

    certificate recipients, help Assmang Khuma-

ni to be a responsible corporate citizen.

This investment in skills is necessary

    because all infrastructure needs qualified

    people to maintain it.

She also mentioned how impressed she

was to see that the majority of the gradua-

tes was women. Dilotsotlhe encouraged the

graduates to not allow challenges to

become failures, but to rather make failures

    mere challenges to overcome.

    Sixty-three graduates received certificates

for the successful completion of the Best

    training programme. Best stands for

    Business Expenses Savings Training. The

    programmes objectives provided business

    skills training to prospective entrepreneurs,

    business idea generation, basic financial

    management and business planning.

Hilton Appollis, a Best graduate, gave an

overview of the success of the training.

The Portable Skills training was provided

    THE Gamagara Municipality is committed

to change in Mapoteng near Kathu.

    The municipality, along with several

volunteers and the staff of a supermarket,

picked up rubbish and cut grass in and

    around Ward 5 in Mapoteng.

    The whole Gamagara municipal council,

    including the mayor, municipal manager,

    administrative and general workers,

    participated in the effort.

    According to the Gamagara Municipali-

    tys communication officer, Kamogelo

Semamai, Mapoteng has became one of the

fastest growing townships in South Africa.

This has resulted in a high level of

illegal dumping as well as uncontrollable

    refuse thrown everywhere by consumers.

    The Gamagara council, through the

    Department of Community Services, has

resolved to restore the old glory of being

one of the cleanest towns in the Northern

Cape as well as South Africa.

All towns in Gamagara will be targeted

from Mapoteng. The council will move to

other towns in the Gamagara district, at

    the same time conducting consumer

education to teach people that everybody

must keep his or her refuse in the yard

up until the collection day by the munici-

pality. Restrictions for littering will also

    be erected.

The mayor of the Gamagara Municipali-

ty, co Dineo Moyo, said that the Gamaga-

ra Municipality is taking the lead in the

    cleanliness of the township.

The community must now do their bit

to keep the area clean because the

    municipalitys efforts are ultimately for

    you as a community.

At the event the supermarket donated

several bags of mealie-meal, sugar and

rice to the Mapoteng soup kitchen.

    THE Kathu police, in

    partnership with the

    Kathu traffic depart-

    ment and the provin-

    cial traffic depart-

    ment, held a stop-and-

    search operation at

    the Kathu High School

    on 11 August.

The main purpose of the operation was

    to catch traffic offenders.

A total of 92 vehicles were stopped.

Altogether 18 fines were issued of

which nine were issued to children

driving without a valid drivers lic-

    ence.

    Driving without a valid drivers

THE Northern Cape Department of Trans-

port, Safety and Liaison hosted a Domestic

    Violence Act outreach programme and

workshop with stakeholders at the Kathu

    Police Station on 14 August.

The police and the Community Policing

    Forum (CPF) members from Kathu,

Olifantshoek, Deben and Dingleton, as well

as Famsa Kathu, attended the workshop.

The deputy director of the Department of

Transport, Safety and Liaison in the

    Northern Cape, Dipuo Anthony, explained

the purpose of the workshop. The work-

shop is aimed at raising awareness of the

Domestic Violence Act and what it entails

for members of the community and the

    South African Police Service (SAPS).

According to Anthony, the police cannot

fight domestic violence alone. The police

must enter into partnerships with the

    Departments of Education and Social

    Development, as well as municipalities,

NGOs, businesses, mines and the communi-

    ty.

    These stakeholders must strengthen their

relationships in order to prevent the

current wave of domestic violence in South

    Africa.

Henry Claasen, assistant director of the

    Department of Transport, Safety and

Liaison in the Northern Cape, explained

what the Domestic Violence Acts practical

implications for the SAPS and the commu-

    nity would entail.

Lt Col Cecilia Kgobe delivered the vote

of thanks to everyone who attended the

    event.

    After the workshop, the stakeholders

went to the Mapoteng township near Kathu

in order to explain to the community what

their rights under the Domestic Violence

    Act were.

    Workshop raises awareness

SEVERAL members of the Department of

Transport, Safety and Liaison attended the do-

    mestic violenceworkshop held at theKathuPo-

lice Station. From the left are Henry Claasen

    Project:

    I WOULD like to thank

    the Kathu Village Mall as

    well as Jetmart Kathu for

    all the goods they sponso-

    red for the charity event

held on 9 August at the

    Permonkie Village outside

    Kuruman.

KATHU has a new Nandos franchise with a mouth-

watering menu and friendly personnel ready to serve.

Nandos opened their doors to the public on Thurs-

    day 14 August, at 17:30.

Tessa Aquadro is the owner of Nandos Kathu and

she and her staff are all about customer service and

    satisfaction.

Aquadro lives in Kimberley, but visits Kathu

regularly to make sure the business runs smoothly.

She says there is good growth in the Northern Cape,

especially in and around Kathu, and that is why she

chose to open a Nandos in Kathu.

Nandos also has an art initiative where they give

local South African artists a chance to showcase their

work in all Nandos franchises in South Africa and

    abroad.

Nandos is a family-orientated brand and its menu

has a wide variety to suit everybodys taste. Even

though Nandos are famous for their flame-grilled

peri-peri chicken, they also cater to those who prefer

something with less of a burn.

Their lemon and herb and tangy tomato-flavoured

chicken are just as popular and available on their

    menu.

The Nandos Kathu restaurant seats 70 patrons

inside, has a drive-thru facility and also serves

take-aways for those in a hurry.

Their business hours are from 09:00 to 21:00 on

Sundays until Thursdays as well as on public holi-

days. On Fridays and Saturdays they open at 09:00

    and stay open until 22:00.

The store managers, Terrance Puiri and Desmond

Gasekomen, are just as passionate about their role at

    Nandos Kathu.

Puiri said the customers satisfaction in their food

and their service is paramount in the success of the

    business.

Nandos famous peri-peri comes from the Birds Eye

chilli. The chilli is mixed with a handful of herbs, a

squeeze of lemon and a touch of garlic. The combina-

tion is a true Portuguese taste sensation.

Even though the Nandos own peri-peri recipe is a

closely guarded secret, their traditional Portuguese

hospitality, friendship and simple family are some-

thing that they would happily share with their

    customers.

    ROLENE STRAUSS, Miss South

Africa 2014, showed her support for

Casual Day. She recently visited a

casual day at a school for children

    with disabilities.

By lending her voice to these

    millions of South Africans who

participate in Casual Day she is

making a big impact on the lives of

persons with disabilities all over the

    country.

    A fourth-year medical student,

Strauss is passionate about health and

    women and really enjoyed interac-

ting with the children at the Alma

    School in Pretoria which provides

    education, physiotherapy, transport

and assistive devices to children with

    cerebral palsy, intellectual and

    physical disabilities.

    The theme is appropriately

    celebratory, says the project leader,

    Celester Vinassa.

We have been dressing casually for

the past two decades, but this year is

    a special occasion.

We thank all the celebrities who

have helped us raise awareness for

    our project, including every Miss

South Africa for the last 19 years. So

our message to you is to rustle up a

little razzle dazzle and dress up in the

official colour of the year, dazzle blue.

Casual Day is all about fantasy and

dressing up in things you can find

around the house. Be creative with

glitter, fabric, shiny paper or just

wear your sticker and a posh casual

    attitude, continued Vinassa.

Casual Day is celebrated on 5

September and it is South Africas

    most successful fundraising project

    for persons with disabilities. The

amount raised for last year has

    climbed to R24,8 million.

This years theme is Bring out the

  • 16 KALAHARI BULLETIN, DONDERDAG 21 AUGUSTUS 2014

THE two bi-elections in the municipal

districts of Nama Khoi and Khara Hais

have shown that the DA is a force to be

reckoned with and that there are voters

who believe in the party to ensure clean

    and governable municipalities.

The DA has won the bi-election in Ward

4 in Springbok with 62,99% against the

    37,01% of the ANC.

Rodney Kritzinger, who used to be the

    community operations manager in the

Namaqualand region, will now serve as

the DA councillor in the Nama Khoi

    Municipality.

The DA is very fortunate to have him

as a councillor in this municipal board as

Rodney has shown his strength and inputs

in the party the last couple of years.

He will now focus on transparent local

    governance within the municipality, as

well as empower the people of his ward.

Rodney was number 12 on the partys

provincial candidates list in the previous

    national elections, says Cliv Burger,

provincial media manager for the Nor-

    thern Cape.

Harold McGluwa, chairperson of the DA

in the Northern Cape and constituency

head of the Benede Oranje Region, says he

is happy with the outcome of the bi-elec-

tions in Ward 11 in Upington.

He is, however, worried about the

abuse of state resources by the ruling

    party.

As long as we have people, especially

    governmental officials, who intimidate

voters, we will never have free and fair

    elections.

Andrew Louw, leader of the DA, added

his voice to that of McGluwa saying he

    and Adv. Boitumelo Babuseng were

surrounded by government officials at the

breakfast table in the guest-house they

    stayed at.

It is time that these officials are named

    in public.

They should be held accounted for in

    their personal capacity for wasting

    taxpayers money.

Why are they ready to visit towns

where bi-elections are held, but when it

comes to service delivery and putting their

money where their mouths are, they are

    nowhere to be seen?

A DA councillor in Nama Khoi reported

that on the day of the bi-election roads

were being maintained and even rubbish

removed in the particular ward where the

    bi-election was held.

This cannot be by accident. It was

    planned to intimidate and influence

    voters.

    Departmental officials from Kimberley

get out of their official vehicles and get

involved in politicking at the voting

    stations.

This should not be allowed and the DA

will bring this before the Public Protector

    in order to be investigated.

However, we are satisfied with the

    outcome.

We are already working towards the

municipal elections in the Northern Cape

in 2016 to ensure that the party will lead

by example as can be seen once again in

the outcome of the bi-elections also held

yesterday in various towns and wards in

    the Western Cape, Louw said.

    Kerkorrel geskryf.

Di nuwe produksie gaan beslis groot

aftrek op die Gariep Kunstefees kry. Die

produksie se naam is Kramer, Krog en

    Kerkorrel.

ikone aansluit. Die produksie word as

komies en roerend beskryf bekend, maar

    heeltemal onbekend.

De Priester is op 29 Augustus om 20:00 in

die Eureka-teater te sien. Die kaartjies kos

    R100.
