EXISTING and aspiring entrepreneurs inthe Northern Cape will get the opportunityto present their skills and to come up withnew initiatives and innovative ideas tobenefit the aluminium sector.The Aluminium Benificiation Initiative

(ABI) held an information session with fivelocal entrepreneurs in Kathu on Thursday(05/03).The focus of the initiative is on busines-

ses already working in the aluminiumsector, looking to expand their currentoperations.This follows an economic development

initiative by BHP Billiton and Hulamin,along with the ABI to benefit the country’saluminium resources.The programme is supervised by the

executive development (USB-ED) pro-gramme of the University of Stellenbosch(US), which forms part of the university’sBusiness School.The aim is to identify, develop and

support entrepreneurs and guide them tobuild sustainable businesses that are ableto utilise about 100 tons of aluminium eachper annum.According to De Wet Schoeman, the

director of the Centre for Applied Entrepre-neurship at USB-ED, small to mediumbusinesses are the leading job-creators inthe Northern Cape, the country and theworld.He said that entrepreneurs should

recognise the opportunities around them,and use them to further and expand theircurrent businesses.“You as SMMEs must aim at becoming

suppliers to bigger companies, and sobenefit from an existing market.”He went on to say that too much of the

country makes use of international importsinstead of developing innovative ways ofusing the available resources in SouthAfrica.“The ABI is supported by big companies

that wish to inspire big dreams in localSMMEs. Aluminium is the wave of the

future and entrepreneurs must make use ofits benefits.”Doris Viljoen, the project leader of the

ABI, said that the Northern Cape is anuntapped resource when it came to SMME

development.“Here in Kathu, entrepreneurs have a

unique opportunity to expand their busi-nesses.“It is up to you as bussiness men and

PROF. TYRONE PRETORIUS, ’n oud-leer-ling van die Hoërskool Carlton van Heer-den in Upington, is pas aangestel as diesewende rektor en vise-kanselier van dieUniversiteit van die Wes-Kaap (UWK).Voor dit was hy visieprinsipaal by die

Universiteit van Pretoria (UP). Pretoriushet in 1975 aan Carlton van Heerdengematrikuleer.Kgalema Motlante, oud-president, het sy

aanstelling as rektor as voordelig vir diehele land en nie net die universiteit nie,beskryf.Hy het tydens die inhuldiging gesê

Pretorius het die vermoë om die universi-teit na hoër hoogtes te lei en dat dieuniversiteit onder sy leiding institusionelekrag sal verskaf en uitbou.Kalahari Bulletin het by hom uitgevind

hoe sy jare in Upington hom gevorm het,om die akademiese hoogtes te bereik wathy tans behaal.Waar is jy gebore?Ek is in ’n klein Oos-Kaapse dorpie

genaamd Sterkspruit gebore.Watter laerskool het jy bygewoon?Ek was in heelwat laerskole, onder meer

die Laerskool Sterkspruit en die LaerskoolAlexander Sinton in Kaapstad.Watter onderwysers in Carlton van

Heerden het ’n blywende indruk op jougemaak?Al my onderwysers was toegewyd en was

uitstekende rolmodelle vir my. Drie staanegter uit. Dan Leukes, die hoof, mnr.Groenewald, die rekeningkunde-onderwyseren mnr. Mettler.Watter onderwyser of gemeenskapslid

het ’n groot invloed gehad op dieakademiese rigting wat jy ingeslaanhet?Die drie wat ek bo genoem het en ook

Jeff Thomas wat ’n groot rol gespeel hetdaarin om kerkfinansiering vir my te reël.Japie Bok was die hoof van die skool waarek as ongekwalifiseerde onderwyserskoolgehou het.Hy het altyd geglo ek is tot meer in staat

as om net as ongekwalifiseerde onderwyserskool te hou. En dan ook iemand wat onsalmal net geken het as oom Hokkie Surtie.Enige staaltjies uit jou skooldae wat

jy altyd sal onthou?Ek en ’n paar ander is net voor die

matriekeindeksamen tydelik geskors omdatons nie die regte oefenklere skool toegebring het nie. Ek het aangeneem dit is ’npermanente skorsing en het by die huisgesit heeltemal onbewus dat die ander seouers die hoof gaan spreek het en weer

terug was by die skool.Gelukkig het een van my onderwysers

my gekontak en, soos hulle sê, is die resgeskiedenis.Wat het jy ná skool gedoen wat tot jou

aanstelling as rektor gelei het?Ek was ’n meterleser in King William’s

Town. Daarna het ek vir ’n paar jaar asongekwalifiseerde onderwyser skoolgehou.Ek was baie lief vir skoolhou en het

besef ek sal nooit ’n heeltydse pos kry asek nie verder studeer nie. Dit het mygenoodsaak om my vir ’n graad in te skryfom my onderwyskwalifikasie te kry.Is daar enige motiverende gedagte wat

jy met die huidige leerlinge van Carltonvan Heerden wil deel?Ek was nog altyd baie trots daarop dat

ek kan sê Carlton van Heerden is my almamater.Die skool het landwyd ’n uitstekende

reputasie en het al verskeie uitstekendepresteerders opgelewer. Maar die skoolverskaf net die grondslag; dis soos ’npadteken. Dit wys die rigting aan en blyagter om rigting aan ander ook te bied. Dithang van elke leerling van dié skool af omdie rigting te volg en hul drome te bewaar-heid. Onderwys verskaf hoop en ek isvoorwaar geseën omdat dit aan my ’ntoekoms verskaf het.Tydens sy inhuldiging as rektor het

Pretorius gesê: “Ons moet ons hele hoëron-derwys-stelsel verbeter sodat geen studentof akademikus kan voel dat tweede besteooit goed genoeg is.”

eie maar min werd. Ja, dit isvanselfsprekend.Jy kan baie min daarmee

verrig, maar ’n paar van hullemaak ’n verskil Z baie van hullemaak ’n groot verskil.As jy baie 10 c-stukke het, kan

jy doen net wat jy wil.En ja, daardie paar sente is nou

wel min werd, maar kort jy nieook partykeer ’n bietjie geld as jyby die kasregister staan nie? Dankom jy agter hoe groot verskilkan een 10 c maak – 10 c te minis 10 c te min.As jy dit nie by jou het nie, het

jy dit nie.Dit is dus nogal ’n goeie

DIÉ pragtige sonsondergangtoneel is ná onlangse reën by Rooisand in Kathu geneem. Hoewel dit hierdiesomer nie so baie gereën het soos verlede jaar nie, is elke druppel wat in die droë Kalahari val, kosbaar.

Net voor diebemarkingskonferensie was ’n span leidendeChinese wynkopers hier, spesiaal ingevliegom die kelder en sy produkte te besigtig metdie idee om Orange River Cellars se wyne inChina te laat vloei.

IN a recent accident, a bakkie of a securitycompany collided with a tree in FrikkieMeyer Street, Kathu. The bakkie wasallegedly speeding down the road, when thedriver lost control and collided with a treeon the road median on 5 March.The Kathu police and Aerocare Kathu

responded to the accident.There were three occupants in the

bakkie. The driver sustained a broken leg,while one passenger sustained backinjuries. The other passenger sustainedonly light injuries. The patients weretransported to the Kathu Private Hospital.Drivers are warned to obey the traffic

laws and not to speed.

HIER is die resep vir ’n besonderse enmóét-maak outydse melktert.Wenke: Hou alles koud terwyl jy die

deeg maak. Werk vinnig en liggies om diedeeg koel te hou (’n dakwaaier of lugver-sorging help hiermee). Gebruik die regtehoeveelheid yswater, anders sal die deegklewerig wees en die resultaat taai enharderig. Gebruik ’n baie skerp mes omdie deeg te sny, anders kneus dit en saldit nie lagies vorm nie.

Skilferdeeg (genoeg vir twee terte):450 g (800 ml) koekmeel3 ml sout5 ml kremetart450 g yskoue botter± 250 ml yswater15 ml suurlemoensapSif die meel, sout en kremetart twee

keer saam. Deel die botter in kwarte.Rasper ’n kwart op ’n rasper se growwekant. Hou die res in die yskas, asook dierasper. Sny die gerasperde botter in diemeel in met twee messe. Sprinkel yswateren suurlemoensap eweredig oor die meel.Meng met ’n vurk tot ’n hanteerbare deeg.Knie en vou deeg op ’n koue oppervlaktotdat dit glad en elasties is. Kleinlugborreltjies moet net onder die opper-vlak sigbaar wees.Strooi meel baie liggies oor die deeg en

rol dit 6 mm dik uit. Hou dit sovermoontlik in ’n reghoekige vorm terwyl dituitgerol word. Lig dit ook van tyd tot tydop om seker te maak dit sit nie vas nie.Bedek twee derdes van die uitgerolde

deeg met nog ’n kwart gerasperde botter.Vou deeg in derdes om die deel watsonder botter is, tussen die dele metbotter te kry. Dit wil sê drie lae deeg mettwee lae botter afwisselend tussenin.Die buiterandjie moet goed vasgedruk

word om al die lug binne te hou. Begin bydie een kort ent van die lang deegreghoeken vou weer in derdes. Die buiterandword weer vasgedruk.Draai die deeg in ’n effens klam doek

toe sodat dit nie uitdroog nie. Laat koudword, maar nie hard nie. Rol weer 6 mm

dik uit. Herhaal die botter-inrasper-en-vou-storie met die volgende kwart van die botteren ’n laaste keer met die laaste kwart.Rol ’n laaste keer uit en vou in drie of vier

lae om ’n vierkant te vorm. Maak in ’n klamdoek toe en sit in die yskas vir ’n uur oftwee. Rol nou ’n laaste keer uit.

Uitvoer van die pan:Dit moet ’n outydse blikbord wees. Dit

gelei die hitte wonderlik en die deeg onderdie vulsel is nie pap nie.Sny die deeg 10 mm groter as die pan

(bord), want dit kan effens krimp. Voer diepan uit. Meet die rand van die tertpan ensny nog ’n strook om daarop te pas.Borsel ’n bietjie water op die strook (nie

tot teen die kante nie, anders rys dit niemooi nie) en plaas op die rand.Bestryk die boom met liggies geklitste

eierwit. Hou die tertbord in die yskas.

Die melktert-pap:(genoeg vir 1 melktert)42 g (75 ml) koekmeel50 ml mielieblom50 ml suiker1 ml sout125 ml melkPlaas al dié bestanddele in ’n middelslag-

mengbak en meng tot glad. Hou eenkant.2 eiergele25 ml suiker2 druppels “egg yellow”-kleursel4 druppels amandelgeursel1 groot doppie vanieljegeursel (7 ml)Plaas dié bestanddele in ’n kleiner meng-

bak en klits tot goed gemeng. Hou eenkant.2 eierwitte½ml kremetart25 ml suikerPlaas dié drie bestanddele in nog ’n

middelslag-bakkie en hou eenkant. Verhit dieoond tot 260 °C. Die oond-rak moet op dietweede vlak van onder wees.

Plaas die volgende in ’n kastrol:550 ml melk10 ml botter2 stukke pypkaneel

Sodra die oond warm is, verhit die melk,botter en kaneel tot kookpunt. Skakel dieplaat af. Voeg die warm melk by die meel-en-melkmengsel en roer tot glad.Gooi terug in die kastrol en plaas op plaat

wat afgeskakel is. Roer die melkmengsel indie kastrol totdat dit dik is – een tot tweekookborrels is nodig. Gooi melkmengsel uitdie kastrol terug in die mengbak.Verwyder kaneel. Roer die eiergeel-mengsel

by (iemand moes intussen vir jou dieeierwitmengsel geklits het tot nét styf; nie te

veel nie, want dan is dit droog.) Vou dieeierwitmengsel in. Gooi in jou uitgevoer-de pan, strooi fyn kaneel liggies oor,indien verkies, en bak in voorverhitteoond vir tien minute.Verlaag die temperatuur na 200 °C vir

nog tien minute.As dit te bruin word, plaas ’n stuk
