Kathmandu Guest House
‘Adventure starts from the Himalaya, the Himalaya starts from Nepal.Nepal starts from Kathmandu,
Kathmandu starts from Thamel andThamel starts from the Kathmandu Guest House.’
Travellers know that the frenetic pace of a crowded city like Kathmandu needs an escape. The Kathmandu Guest House, a converted Rana dynasty mansion with fragrant gardens and
airy corridors, has provided the peaceful refuge of choice since 1968.
Since the days of being the first hotel in Thamel, the packed tourist district ofKathmandu, it’s become something of an institution. It’s close to everywhere
and its gate is a central meeting point.
As a guidebook put it, ‘Kathmandu Guest House actsas a magnet for mountaineers, pop stars, actors and eccentric characters.’
Whether you’re returning from the mountains or arriving from the airport, come and relax atthe KGH Dream Garden restaurant, order a cup of fine Italian coffee or a chilled Beer.
Escape for a moment in the historic surroundings of Kathmandu’s most loved guesthouse.
2 OUR STORY
VÁJRÁ & MÁNDÁLÁ
The world’s largest bronze Vajra - 7 feet 2 inches
‘Vajra’ in Sanskrit or ‘Dorje’ in Tibetan means both ‘Thunderbolt’ and ‘Diamond’. In the spiritual context the Vajra is used as an important instrument in
Buddhist and Hindu rituals.
The tenets of Hinduism and Buddhism are to foster peace and compassion through the embodiment of truth, refracted and reflected through the perfect
purity of the diamond. The thunderbolt represents pure awareness and wisdom. This wisdom is a powerful tool that destroys both evil and ignorance.
The Vajra is the crowning symbol of the KGH Group Logo.
Inaugurated by: Reinhold Messner (29 December, 2018)
“An Aerial View of the World”
A typical Mandala is composed of a number of superimposed concentric circles, squares and occasionally triangles. Depicted at the outermost edge is a wheel of flames,
representing the basic elements of the world: Earth, Water, Fire and Wind.
Thus, the mandala simultaneously depicts both the universe and the individual and hence serves as a medium for the union of the cosmos and the self.

Possibly the most popular of all snacks is the sandwich. It dates back
to 100BC, where nuts, apples, spices and wine were sandwiched
between two Matzohs (unleavened bread). The name itself was
derived from John Montague, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, an aristocrat
and notorious gambler. To save leaving the gambling table he
ordered his servant to ‘put meat between two pieces of bread.’
His gambling friends quickly ordered, ‘..the same as Sandwich.’
Hence the name.
Today there are numerous versions of the sandwich, and many forms
of snacks - some of which you are invited to sample in
The Dream Garden.

The Babylonians used oil and vinegar for dressing greens nearly 2000 years ago. Ancient Egyptians added spices, and the Romans doused their greens with salt. The name
salad is derived from the Latin ‘sal’ - meaning salt.
The French, great lovers of fine food, introduced Mayonnaise 200 years ago.

THE lIFE AND TIMES OF ARNIKO
Arniko, the Michelangelo of Nepal. It is claimed that no other Indo-Asian has shown such greatness as Arniko, in the fields of
architecture, design, sculpturing or art. His works and teachings have spread across all of S.E. Asia. Yet in his country of origin,
Nepal, he is virtually unknown.
Born in 1244, by the age of 3 he showed knowledge of architecture, indicating that he was a reincarnation. He quickly
advanced to building his own conceived stupas. When the Mongol leader Kublai Khan, in 1260, ordered a golden stupa
to consolidate his victory over his brother, he sought a building with a ‘soul’ - as well as one to mark his total sovereignty.
Nepalese architecture and building skills were advanced, and the Khan’s spiritual guru, Phags-Pa, leader of the Sakya sect,
sought 100 builders from Nepal. King Jaybhimdev Malla could only send 80, and all of them feared the power of the Khan.
So the young Arniko, 17, offered to lead them. They reached Lhasa, building stupas along the way. There he impressed
Phags-Pa, who ordained him a monk. He built 9 Buddhist temples, two Confucian shrines plus many stupas. The Khan
commissioned him to build the White Dagoba, which took ten years (1279-1288) and incorporated ‘Buddhist architecture
with its philosophy and symbolism’ . This resulted in it becoming one of the Khan’s symbols of power and legal authority.
Arniko was honored as Duke of Liang, and received Ministerial rank. He renounced the priesthood, married a Nepali,
plus took two Mongolian and seven Chinese wives. He died in 1306, at the age of 62.
Beijing: The White Dagoba (stupa) built by Arniko. A landmark today, at the Miao Ying Temple.
20 FLAVORS OF CHINA
HOW KATHMANDU WAS FORMED
Manjusri, ‘Gentle Glory’, is the oldest and most significant Bodhisattva in Buddhism - symbolizing ‘transcendent wisdom’.
Manjusri flew across the Himalaya, from his earthly abode in China, the summit of Mount Wutaishan. He reached the Kathmandu Valley, where
he found a vast lake with a beautiful giant lotus at its center.
With his flaming sword he cut a deep gorge in the surrounding foothills, allowing the lake waters to flood out. From this single act the valley became a vast fertile plain, soon to be inhabited
by both man and animals alike.
Where the lotus settled you may discover the inspiring Swayambhunath Stupa - Monkey Temple.
Why Arniko and Manjusri in a menu?
Arniko walked across the Himalaya from Nepal and took his knowledge and skills to China, while Manjusri flew to Nepal and gave us the
Kathmandu Valley. Culture is a two-way flow, and food is a part of culture.
So too with Flavors of China - a mixture of many ingredients, textures, smells and tastes.
We hope you enjoy our kitchen, and our Menu with a difference.

FlAvORS OF INDIA印度味道
India’s diverse climate, from deep tropical to alpine, plus religious and social influences, have created a variation of dishes unsurpassed. Vegetarianism was facilitated by Buddhism, plus the availability of fruits, grains and vegetables all year round. Mughal rule introduced rich sauces and kebabs. The Nizams perfected Biryani, which they claim to be the finest of all Indian dishes! Tibetan specialties seeped into the northern hills, while the British invaders introduced the potato and the Portuguese favored sea-dishes...
All this in a country blessed with a rich variety of spices.
We invite you to experience a Taste of India in The Dream Garden.
‘I dive deeply into the mixture of Indian spices. Their subtle flavors, exotic perfume and sensuous taste.’
- Thorstein Nokleby - World Traveler.

KGH HERITAGE WALK 55
Maitripur Mahabihar: A virtually hidden monastery behinda non-descript entrance. Spanning three floors it’s anelaborate building with a wonderful Newari style roof.
Bhagwati Shrine: Another virtually hidden shrine is locatedbetween several pashmina stores just before Thahiti Chowk. If the shrine is closed do walk up close as you still get a view of the colorful statue of Bhagwati behind it.
Thahiti Chowk: contains three interesting sites. • A two-roofed small shrine dedicated to an incarnation of Shiva with bold brass doors on the northern side of the square.• A well-preserved Ganesh Shrine just around the corner.• Legend says, the main 15th century Stupa was built by a Tibetan to hide his gold coins.
Musya Bahal: This is a 12th century monastery. The Chaitya at the center is probably much older and dates to the 7th century when the monastery was likely first founded. Take note of the red vermilion showing that this is living heritage, where daily offerings and religious rites take place.
Chhusya Bahal [The Secret Courtyard]: The roof struts over the main entrance depict four celestial Buddhas, while to the right are protective goddesses and to the left musicians and dancers. Historians query why these roof struts are characteristic of 13th century woodwork yet the temple dates a few centuries after this in 1640. There are rumors that struts from the Musya Bahal were used here during the renovation.
Kathesimbhu Stupa [Shigal]: is a smaller replica of the greatstupa of Swayambhunath also known as the Monkey Temple, built for people who were unable to visit Swayambhu. The domed chaitya is rumored to be from the 5th & 6th centuries. The stone chaitya around this courtyard are 20th century additions. Harati, the goddess of health has a temple in the corner & Drubgon Jangchup Choeling Monastery is here too.
56 KGH HERITAGE WALK
Gam Bahal: Traditional Newari Buddhist Monastery. One ofthe 18 main Bahals [Mahavihara] of the Acharya Guthi andDeacaguthi. It has been beautifully restored since the 2015 earthquake.
Bangemudha Square: The Narayan temple takes center stage along with Shiva shrines but the undiscovered attraction is a 6th century Buddha statue to the left. This statue is set into the steps of a shop but is very well looked after.
Wasya Dya contains ‘The Toothache God’ (a manifestation of Bhairab). Legend tells of when Wasya Dya first came to Kathmandu it was to watch the dances of goddess Nara Devi. Apparently he stayed so long he took root as a great tree. Today all that remains of this great tree is this piece of wood. Locals nail a coin to the wood as an offering to remove toothache.
Koti Mahadev Temple: This temple may seem like many others but take a look at the bricks. Each one is stamped with a Shiva Lingam making it the only one of it’s kind in the world. To the left around the side are statues of Ganesh and Bhairab. Opposite the compound is a small shrine to Ganesh.
Itum Bahal: The largest Buddhist Bahal in Kathmandu and one of the oldest still in existence in the world today. The first courtyard worth exploring is Saraswati Nani dedicated to the goddess Saraswati. The second courtyard is the Green Tara Nani.
Naradevi Temple: The Goddess was said to be a frequent eater of men but agreed to limit her eating when King Gunakamadeva asked her to live here. Some believers attribute Kathmandu’s earthquakes to Naradevi and the pact with King Gunakamadeva.
Note: Not all sites are included in the KGH Heritage Walk
KGH HERITAGE WALK 57
Yetakha Bahal: Aside from the pristine Stupa the windows &doorway here of the Bahal are beautiful examples of fineNewari woodcarving. View the main 12th century toranaabove the door and the five female figures.
Chamunda House: The entire doorway has a torana above it enclosed in metal rods with an ornate window above. This is Dya Chhen or “God’s House” referring to the Mother Goddess. It survived the 2015 earthquake.
Aakash Bhairav: King Yalambar of the Kirat Dynasty [800 B.C.] is said to be associated with this version of Bhairab. The temple itself is unusual due to this open second level. The temple was constructed by King Pratap Malla in 17th century.
Jana Bahal & Pottery Market: The temple is dedicated to Seto Machchendranath who is both Hindu & Buddhist, something that is very indicative of the original culture of Kathmandu valley. Machchendranath comes from the Sanskrit word for ‘fish.’ Machchendranath is the God of Rain. There is a an intresting, hidden pottery market behind the temple.
Asan Bazaar & Annapurna Ajima Temple In the centre ofthe bustling Ason bazaar there is an impressive looking temple dedicated to Annapurna, the Goddess of Bounty. The temple is also decorated with mirrors, lamps, plates, statues and elaborate toranas. Inside there is no deity. Instead there is a tantric silver vessel called a Kalash, which is the symbol of bounty, of giving.
Founder of KGH Group Karna Sakya’s birth house, Asan The humble beginnings of the KGH Group of Hotels and Resorts started here. Our founder, Karna Sakya, grew up in this house. The house still belongs to the family and religious functions are carried out here every year.
This old Rana palace had been bought by Siddhi Bahadur Sakya, who turned it into his family home. His sons turned 7 rooms into guest rooms, and tourism came to Kathmandu, led and fed by KGH.
Over 50 years the family have established seven hotels, employing over 650 staff, and serving thousands. Yet the Guest House is more than four walls. It is a symbol of the Nepali people, who after the two
devastating earthquakes of 2015 have risen from the ashes. The old palace was badly damaged, and instead of trying to repair it, it was demolished brick by brick, and trees and flowers took its place.
Yes, creating The Dream Garden, where you are sitting now.
Central to the garden is the Vajra and Mandala, symbols of both heavenly and earthly power. The Walk of Fame represents 50 years of hospitality, for here you find the names, etched in stone, of visitors who have contributed to the development of Nepal. Be they mountaineers like Reinhold Messner, Doug Scott, Chris
Bonington or Yui Chiro Muira (who skied down Everest). George Harrison was one of our earlier guests, inspiring The Beatles Diner. Off great distinction is Nepal’s own Madam Anuradha Koirala, who has saved over
17,000 women from trafficking.
Susan’s Collection is one of Nepal’s most distinguished art galleries housing an innovative collection from Nepal’s master craftsmen. There is an Artist’s Quartier, where you can rest and relax - and where art by some of
Nepal’s leading Paubha and Contemporary artists is highlighted. A lendng library, coffee shop, sun-beds, a hairdresser and spa plus a jeweler and gift shop are to be found. Two special points of interest: The Stone Cutter, who can cut designs to your design, and Beni Recycled Handicrafts, where women collect waste
materials and produce functional and fashionable products. Recycling at its best! Please see the Dream Garden Map, and explore.
David Durkan.KGH Ambassador, world traveler, and author of Penguins on Everest.
KGH REFlECTIONS Like thousands of hippies and pretend hippies I traveled through Europe, Turkey, Iran (before the Shah was deposed), Afghanistan (before the Russians invaded), Pakistan, India and ended up in the fabled city of Kathmandu. The Kathmandu Guest House was, like for so many travelers, my first stop. Here East met West - overlanders, hippies, trekkers, botanists, mountaineers, authors, explorers... - all stayed here.
