PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Fellsmere housewife made history 100 years ago
In Indian River County, the women’s right to vote started earlier than in any other place in Florida and possibly the Southeast. Below are a few of the early women pioneers who made a difference. One hundred years ago (June 17, 1915), a Fellsmere housewife, Mrs. Zena Mathews Dreier, became the first woman to vote. She was born in Illinois and married William L. Dreier, a graduate of the Kansas City School of Law. The Dreiers moved to Fellsmere in 1912; he was a salesman for the Fellsmere Farms Company. Patrick Vans Agnew, husband of Marian Fell, wrote the charter for the city of Fellsmere and included the women’s right to vote. The charter was passed by the state Legislature without a problem. In some newspapers, it was printed “senators are wondering what will be the result of this unthoughted action.” The right to vote was denied to women in all other Florida cities.
In the 1920 Presidential election, the first in which all women could vote, Indian River County had 535 registered voters and 192 of them were women. The Vero League of Women Voters was formed June 1921 and Mrs. Irene (A.W.) Young was the first chairperson. One month later, Roseland formed a league. The goal was to get the whole county to have a league in each town. Their first agenda was related to
health quarantine and general sanitation. In 1922, the newspaper headlines read “Woman Elected on Fair Board.” Mrs. Anabel (W.H.) Tallis of Fellsmere was elected a director. In 1928, Mrs. Sibyl G. Hearne had the distinction of being the first woman to run for office in Indian River County. In the race for Supervisor of Registration, she lost by 17 votes (842 to 825).

The Top 5 most
prescribed medications
at the Indian River
County Jail:
1) Trileptal (antipsychotic) – 6.25%
2) Antibiotics – 6%
3) Lisinopril (hypertension) – 5.75%
4) Celexa (antidepressant) – 4.25%
5) Risperdal (antipsychotic) – 3.5%
NOTE: The percentage represents
number of inmates housed who were

would mean 25 inmates are taking
said medication.
What about over-the-counter medicine, such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen? Approximately 50 percent of the inmates are taking one or both.
As of last month, 27 out of 400 inmates were taking Tums.

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the field of Republican presidential candidates to reach 20:
• While never a lightning rod like Fellsmere, the proposed I-95 exit at Oslo Road often was used as a “scare tactic” by those opposed to growth in Indian River County. The exit would be a big step toward us becoming “another South Florida.” Or so I kept hearing back in 2007, my first year at the Press Journal. Well, come 2022 (or thereabouts), the exit should be a reality. It has been approved by all of the necessary governmental agencies. Phil Matson, the director of the county’s Metropolitan Planning Organization, doesn’t see the exit turning Oslo Road into another State Road 60. Rather, he described it as a convenience for existing residents and businesses in the area – that is, they won’t have to backtrack to get to I-95. “I think it’s going to be more like (the I-95 exit at)
County Road 512,” Matson said. “It’s a wonderful thing for Sebastian residents.” Sebastian is the biggest city in the county, and there’s plenty of room for growth in the Oslo Road area. Still, Matson doesn’t see a spike in population in south county as a result of the exit. “I don’t think there’s going to be a major densification,” he said. Of course, he offered the standard “crystal ball” disclaimer. To me, the Oslo Road exit will provide more of a “balance” to the county. It’s going to be a great addition.• Steve Fugate’s two-year, zig-zag walk across the lower 48 states to raise awareness of suicide will come to an end this week. Fugate, now 68, has logged more than 10,000 miles on this journey – it’s his eighth such walk spurred by his son’s suicide in 1999.

At 2 p.m. on Saturday (June 20), friends will gather at A.W. Young Park – located on 21st Street on the east side of Indian River Boulevard – for a “welcome home” celebration for Fugate. The public is invited to attend.• Attention, elderly drivers: You may want to head to the Vero Beach Community Center on Wednesday (June 17, 9 a.m. to noon) for the “Safety is Golden Mobility Fair.” It’s an event designed for drivers over the age of 65. I’m hoping there’s a session about driving in the left lane.• Not that anyone who was out and about in recent months is surprised, but the 2014-15 tourist season officially ranks among the best ever in these parts. Look no further than the county’s 4 percent “tourist tax” at hotels, which generated a record $733,990. It’s amazing how a mere 4 percent tax – which hotel guests probably don’t even notice – can add up like that. There’s no downside to this type of tax.• I’ve never put much stock in hurricane forecasts, but
I certainly hope the one for 2015 – “zero to 2” major hurricanes – is accurate. The Lemmons have lived here since late ’06, and there’s never been a time when we’ve considered putting up our hurricane shutters. Knock on wood. • Did you know there’s a new media entity in the county? It’s called Buzz TV … and it’s only on the Internet (VeroBuzzTV.com). A group of former TV 10 employees – including Marcia Littlejohn, Jeff Voegele, Alex Zulueta and Holly Smith – started the new venture on May 1. “It’s the future of television,” Voegele said. “Broadcast television is dying.” Unlike TV 10, Buzz TV does not have geographic boundaries (because it’s Internet-based) and is not regulated by the Federal Communications Commission. Voegele recently interviewed me, and it’ll be available the VeroBuzzTV.com website this week. Check it out, won’t you?

Meet me at Table 51
Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.
I’ve been meeting Paul Bristol for coffee every two or three months for about seven years now. It’s always an enjoyable conversation because we cover a wide range of topics. We’d probably get together more often if he didn’t travel so much. Paul and his wife of nearly 46 years, Kaylynn, get more use out of their passports than anyone I know. They’ve been to 26 countries during the past five years. “I look at my passport and just can’t believe it,” Paul said. Name a country and, chances are, he has been there or it’s on his radar. What’s the most impressive thing he’s seen in his travels?
The pyramids of Giza in Egypt top his list, followed by the Taj Mahal in India. When asked about an attraction that did not live up to expectations, he did not hesitate. (Care to guess? Hint: It’s in Italy.) “The Leaning Tower of Pisa,” he said. Paul takes pride in getting great deals on trips. He searches the Internet and sometimes pays a fraction of what others on the same cruise pay.
“You don’t have to be a millionaire to travel – we always do budget tours,” he said. “I get almost as much satisfaction with the planning as with the trip.” The Bristols have called Vero Beach home for eight years. “Vero is a real community with real people and a real history,” he said. “It’s not some made-up town carved out of farmland like The Villages and Tradition.” No wonder Paul, 68, is loving retirement. “The best 14 years of my life,” he said.

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.
395. “Don’t Look Back”(1978) BostonMemory: One of those songs I instantly associate with college. Ah, good times.394. “Through the Years”(1982) Kenny RogersMemory: A popular song on DVDs that celebrate a person’s life or a long marriage ... for good reason.393. “Hand in My Pocket”(1995) Alanis MorissetteMemory: What a gifted songwriter. She does a great job of “painting a picture” with her lyrics.
In 2010, Indian River County’s population was 138,028.
