PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Trying to solve mystery of burial plot in Fellsmere (Part 2)

Previously, we learned that Thomas Benton Kelly may be an imposter buried in the Fellsmere cemetery. His age does not correspond with historical events and records. The 1912 Fellsmere newspaper article states that he “knows all about the old Forty-niners, for he was in California during that exciting period.” We know that is impossible if he was born in 1851. Mr. Kelly is looking suspicious. It became apparent many men across the United States falsely claimed to be on the USS Monitor. The U.S. Naval Institute checked their records and they were not able to locate Kelly. Next records to check are cemetery, probate, land, death, marriage and descendants. There has to be a mistake somewhere. At Ancestry.com, descendants of Kelly posted a family tree. Not surprisingly, they too came to a dead end. One family member found a possible connection to David Franklin Stark of Highland County,

Ohio. The family moved to McLean County, Illinois, where Stark joined the Army in May 1875. Stark deserted in August 1875. After that date he disappeared. The first time Thomas Benton Kelly appears in the records was when he married in Ozark County, Missouri in 1887. Years later, Ben R. Kelly, the great grandson of Thomas Kelly inherited a Family Bible. It revealed Kelly was born in 1851 in Ohio and he had a

brother called John and his father was a Stark. DNA tests later proved that the descendants of Thomas Benton Kelly were genetically related to members of the Stark family. The trail of evidence that Ben Kelly followed is an amazing story in itself. Arriving in Fellsmere in 1912, Thomas Benton Kelly may have found another place to hide, but 100 years later, I believe he has been discovered.

Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for Peyton Manning’s last hurrah:

• Bill and Mary Pettigrew knew I was outside my comfort zone. It’s not that I’m uncomfortable around guns – it had more to do with not knowing anything about skeet shooting. They gave me a tour of Indian River Shooting Sports (also known as the Indian River Trap and Skeet Club), and I learned there’s more on 82nd Avenue besides sand mines. What an impressive facility. It’s operated by Mick and Emma Howells. Mick is a former sporting-clay world champion. Bill and Mary Pettigrew wanted to give me a tour of the 26-acre facility because they want to spread the word about it – in particular, they’re hoping seasonal visitors will discover it. Right now, there are about 90 members. “The man (Mick) has worked tirelessly to make

improvements,” Bill said. Bill and Mary are great ambassadors for shooting sports. Bill surprised me when he said he and Mary don’t hunt. “We don’t kill anything,” he said. Their hobby is shooting at clay targets. “There are no fixed targets here,” he said. “Everything here is a moving target.” A few years ago, Mary didn’t have any interest in shotgun shooting. But a woman let her borrow a shotgun at a shooting range, and Mary was hooked. “It’s addictive,” she said. The year’s biggest event at Indian River Shooting Sports, located at 5925 82nd Ave., is the Caribbean Classic. The event, expected to draw 200 competitors from around the

world, is scheduled from Feb. 11-16.• If you’ve read my column through the years, you know I become a registered Republican every other year so I can have a meaningful vote in the August primary. The rest of the time, I’m an NPA (No Party Affiliation). Well, because I’m fascinated by the race for the Republican nomination for president, and the role Donald Trump is playing in it, I decided to become a registered Republican earlier than normal this year. Florida’s Presidential Preference Primary is scheduled for March 15. Thanks to Cathy Boyle, an election specialist at the Supervisor of Elections office, for making the switch so painless.• “A Chorus Line” is now No. 6 on Riverside Theatre’s list of all-time most popular plays. The play ended its three-week run on Jan. 24. Look for Riverside’s all-time Top 15 list on Page 3 sometime this month.• A text from Rosie Livings: “It took you 201 countdown

songs to make it to one I like – ‘Wichita Lineman’!!”• A follow-up to last week’s column on the volunteer at the Used Book Depot who found $380 in a book that had been donated: Thanks to the efforts of volunteer Verity Minahan, the money was returned to JoAnn Joule. (There’s a photo of the women on LemmonLines.com.) JoAnn’s husband, Bill, died in May. JoAnn’s daughter-in-law is Cindy Carson, who owns Dragonfly Designs. In going through Bill’s books, Cindy had the opportunity to take the book with the $380 inside, “Alexander the Great’s Art of Strategy: Lessons from the Great Empire Builder,” but passed. It was on top of a big stack.• This week’s “Good Sport Award” goes to Bevelon Theriault for allowing me to take a photo of her while underneath a hair dryer at Cuts ‘N Such Hair Salon. I had to take it – she was reading a certain newsletter. The photo is on the Lemmon Lines page on Facebook – it’s a good one!• Super Bowl prediction: Denver 27, Carolina 24.

Meet me at Table 51

Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.

The exclamation point has been there from the beginning. Gardenfest!, now in its 15th year, has proven worthy of the mark usually used for sentence-ending punctuation. (Jeb!, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to reflect the personality of presidential candidate Jeb Bush.) Usually held the same weekend as the Super Bowl, which is the case this year, Gardenfest! draws about 20,000 people to Riverside Park in Vero Beach. Barbara Russell has been a co-chair of Gardenfest! – the signature event of the Garden Club of Indian River County – for the last 14 years. She says preparation for the event

starts in the summer. She travels the state looking for vendors who would be a good fit. There will be about 90 vendors at this year’s event. “We have tried to stay green,” Barbara said during our conversation at C.J. Cannon’s. That is, no vendors sell clothes, jewelry, oils or crafts. Saturday is the big day at Gardenfest! Attendance

is typically twice that of Sunday. “Saturday morning are the ‘real’ gardeners,” she said. “Saturday morning, at 9, they’re standing at the gate.” A pop quiz for gardeners from Barbara: “Do you know the secret of growing an orchid? Leave it alone.” Barbara says the Garden Club usually adds a few members following Gardenfest! The club currently has about 220 members. It has been around for 87 years. If you’re interested in becoming a member, call 772-567-4602.
