Celebrating 45 Years 2015

PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Library a great place for World War II research

Seventy years ago this month, World War II ended Aug. 14, 1945 (Aug. 15 in Japan.) Documents were finally signed aboard the deck of the American battleship USS Missouri on Sept. 2, 1945 officially ending the war. Florida participated as a training ground for the U.S. military, which resulted in 172 military installations in Florida. The Vero Beach Naval Air Station (NAS) was commissioned Nov. 24, 1942. There were more than 2,700 men and 300 Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) and women Marines. The people of Indian River County helped in a number of ways. There were “plane spotters,” Red Cross workers, “V-Home” participants, and they provided accommodations for the military men. There are landmarks throughout the county that represent, commemorate and celebrate the men and women who fought. For example: Memorial Island, Vero Beach

Regional Airport, Heritage Center, Ocean Grill (Club Mac), McKee Jungle Garden (now McKee Botanical), and the Four Chaplains war memorial in Sebastian. More details can be found in the vertical files of the Archive Center. The Press Journal is inviting people to bring in their photographs pre-1969 of places, people and events in Indian River County to the library. The event will take place Aug. 29 and 31. The library

is excited about showing for the first time hundreds of photographs of military men and women found in the PJ archives. Most have the names on them and we are asking the public if they know these men and women of the armed services. In addition, there will be some historical panels and displays about WW II in Indian River County. If anyone would like to do more research, visit our website: www.irclibrary.org/genealogy.

JUST WONDERING: What are the most popular books by the 2016 GOP presidential candidates?

The list below, provided by the Vero Beach Book Center, is in order of sales. However, some books are at a disadvantage because they are so new and haven’t had time to sell, and others are so old that peak time has faded.

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while tracking Danny’s path:

• The late Fred Finkelday changed the course of Frank Sosta’s life. Back in the 1980s, Finkelday – then the superintendent of schools in Hyde Park, N.Y. – owned a condo in Vista Gardens. While getting his hair cut at Frank’s barber shop in Hyde Park, Finkelday used to rave about Vero Beach. Finkelday gave Frank a tip about a possible business opportunity in Vero Beach – he might be able to buy the Royal Cut Barber Shop – and suggested Frank consider making the move to fast-growing Florida. Frank took a leap of faith and relocated here with his three kids. “I didn’t know a soul,” he said. After working at Royal Cut for a year, he was able to buy the business. “Just like Fred said I would,” he said.

Now look at him. His barber shop – located in the plaza just to the south of the entrance to McKee Botanical Garden on U.S. 1 – have come a long way. “Anybody who is anybody gets their hair cut here,” he said. You might say Frank is “politically connected.” He is vice chairman of the Indian River County Republican Party’s executive committee. What I love about Frank’s business is that his son, Michael, joined him a little more than a year ago. Frank, 67, is a second-generation barber, and Michael, 31, is carrying on the family tradition. (A photo of Frank and Michael can be found on LemmonLines.com.) Frank’s father was a barber for 63 years. Michael works full-time as a senior aircraft assembler at Piper and is at Royal Cut from about 4 to 7 p.m.

“I wanted something that no one could take away from me,” Michael said. “So, here I am. Third generation.” Michael says he loves his job at Piper, so he doesn’t see cutting hair as anything other than a part-time gig.• The Republican Club of Indian River County is hosting an “All-American Rally” Sept. 26 at the fairgrounds. The popular band Landsharks will be performing from 3 to 6 p.m. Organizers have reached out to all of the GOP presidential candidates and invited them to the event. So far, no one has accepted the invitation. Tom Lockwood, the longtime leader of the local Republican Party, said: “We would like to be optimistic. The reality is, the chances are slim – just because of our size.” Obviously, Donald Trump tops the wish list. Lockwood says it’s a long shot, but he hasn’t given up hope. “You never know,” Lockwood said. “He’s amazed me so far.”• I’m happy to report the sign at U.S. 1 and 12th Street now

includes ALL of the state championships (2006-15) won by Vero Beach High School’s girls lacrosse team.• Those who watched ABC’s “World News Tonight” last week (Aug. 19) had to be smiling with the way anchor David Muir closed out the newscast. After a report of the $4.5 million in gold coins found off our shores, Muir had these parting words: “I’m going to Vero Beach.”• In making a quick stop at the Indian River Mall last week, I crossed paths with longtime acquaintances Jane Young and Joseph Guay. I had no idea they meet every day at the mall and walk more than 2 miles. Since May 2013, Joseph has walked more than 1,630 miles inside the mall and Jane has logged more than 1,360 miles!• We hear it all the time – Vero is becoming more of a year-round community. Well, the aforementioned barber, Frank Sosta, definitely believes that is the case. “This is the busiest summer I’ve ever had,” he said.

Overlooked cinematic gems

As owner of a used DVD shop I occasionally find fairly obscure movies that turn out to be quite good. Here are three of them:• Below (2002, R, directed by David Twohy). In the midst of World War II, the submarine USS Tiger Shark surfaces to pick up the survivors of a British medical ship that had recently been torpedoed. Immediately forced to dive to avoid detection by a German U-boat, a cat-and-mouse game soon ensues. From that point on the movie plays out like a ghostly “Twilight Zone” episode, and features a twist ending that would make M. Night Shyamalan proud (or jealous). Stars Bruce Greenwood, Olivia Williams, and features an early appearance by Zach Galifrianakis.• October Sky (1999, PG, directed by Joe Johnston). Jake Gyllenhaal plays Homer Hickam in this movie based on a true story. Homer, growing up in a small coal-mining community, was destined to become a coal miner just

like his father. That is until that fateful day in 1957, when news of the Sputnik launch ignited within him a passion for building rockets. This heartwarming story of overcoming the odds will leave you with a smile on your face. Also stars Laura Dern and Chris Cooper.• Kenny (2006, PG-13, directed by Clayton Jacobson). Shane Jacobson plays Kenny, an enthusiastic Porta-loo serviceman, in this indie

Australian comedy. When Kenny is given the opportunity to attend the prestigious International Pumper and Cleaner Expo in Nashville, Tennessee (the Mecca of waste management), he jumps at the chance. Instantly likeable, Kenny becomes fast friends with everyone at the expo due to his unassuming charm. This fish-out-of-water comedy had me gasping for breath from laughing so hard. Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

365. “Nothing Compares 2 U”(1990) Sinead O’ConnorMemory: One of the most memorable music videos of all-time.

364. “The Lonely Bull”(1962) Herb Alpert & the Tijuana BrassMemory: I laugh about it now, but their “greatest hits” compilation was the second cassette I ever purchased!

363. “Right Back Where We Started From”(1976) Maxine NightingaleMemory: Another song drilled into my head by Chicago’s AM powerhouse, WLS.

According to Zillow.com, there are about 2,600 homes for sale in Indian River County.

Of those, about half are on the market for less than $200,000.

There are about 220 houses on the market for $1 million-plus.

Fun factsTop 500 countdown

All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.
