PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: A look at the life of Ernest Barnwell

Indian River County loves baseball and Ernest Barnwell was a devoted participant. At the age of 8, he arrived here in 1918 from Titusville. He was a black man whose lineage can be traced back to 1820s Virginia, 1860s South Carolina and Florida. He played on his school’s baseball team. Ernest was a right-handed pitcher and known to have a great curve and fastball. He pitched in more than 200 games for several Negro pro and semi-pro teams in the 1930s and 1940s including the Ethiopian Clowns, Miami Clowns, Miami Giants, West Indies Royals and Vero Beach Hornets. The Ethiopian Clowns traveled across the county performing comedic antics using wigs, grass skirts and clown suits. He received $60 a month and worked two days a week. Barnwell made a decision to return home to his family because he needed to make more money. He was versatile in all jobs. The people of Vero Beach knew him well because

he worked on many community projects. He helped to lay out the streets on north Beachland Boulevard. He worked on the sewers, farms of Winter Beach, and golf courses. One of his favorite people was Merrill Barber, for whom he worked when the Barbers owned a drug store. He had his own landscaping business and had many clients in Vero Beach. Another talent was his booming singing voice. He frequently performed at choir programs,

funerals and church events. His brother Clifford was the first black man from the county killed in World War II. Ernest’s only son Ernest, Jr was wounded in the Korean War. Ernest is listed in “The Biographical Encyclopedia of The Negro Baseball Leagues” by James A. Riley. He died 1996 and is buried in the Gifford Cemetery.Pam Cooper is supervisor of the Archive Center & Genealogy Department at the Indian River County main library.

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the return of “The Good Wife”:

• Adult males my age and older tend to be dismissive of bullying. They figure they made it through junior high and high school unscathed, so students today should be able to navigate their way as well. The dismissive types are seriously out of touch with bullying in today’s society. I mean, two 15-year-old boys were charged last week with carrying guns onto the campus of Vero Beach High School’s Freshman Learning Center. According to the Press Journal, attorney Bob Stone said his clients have been victims of ongoing bullying. The boys feared there was going to be a shooting at a school bus stop. Sadly, it’s probably going to take a dramatic event – such as a school shooting – to convince skeptical adults that bullying is at a much different level now. Guns are now in

the equation, whereas it used to be only fists. Kudos to the Suncoast Mental Health Center for arranging for a second “Bullying Stops Here” community event. It’s scheduled for Oct. 15, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Sebastian River Middle School. (The first one was held January 2014 in Vero Beach.) “It’s open to anyone who wants to learn more about this issue,” said Art Ciasca, CEO of Suncoast Mental Health Center.• The Melody Inn is no more, making it the second downtown Vero Beach restaurant to close during the past month. Margaret Burri, owner of The Melody Inn, says she sold the restaurant to Stephane and Loretta Becht, who hope to reopen it in October as Bistro Fourchette.

As I told Margaret, I’m going to miss the pickled beets at The Melody Inn. (And, generally speaking, I hate beets! That’s how good they were.)• One of the people mentioned in last week’s column was Jerrica Knowles. (Jerrica’s 3-year-old daughter, Alice, and Riley Stadler, 6, raised more than $900 for the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, which is dedicated to the fight against childhood cancer.) During our interview, I asked Jerrica the story behind her name. She said her parents named her after a surfer, but she didn’t know the surfer’s name. In a subsequent email exchange, Jerrica said she would ask her dad about the origin of her name. Her dad came through – the surfer’s name is Jericho Poppler. “They wanted it to sound more feminine, but they got the idea of it from her,” Jerrica said.• For years, morning talk-show host Rhett Palmer has been the self-proclaimed “Mayor of the Airwaves.” Now, out of nowhere, WTTB’s Bob Soos is mounting a challenge for the title.

Bob even set up a Facebook page for his campaign. Pilar Turner, a member of the Vero Beach City Council, has offered to help. She posted this on the “Bob for Mayor of the Airwaves” Facebook page: “I am an experienced sign-waver if your campaign needs volunteers. Call me.”• Barbara Letts made me smile last week during a distribution stop at Treasure Coast Jewelers & Music when she asked if there really is a Table 51 at Bob Evans – or if “Table 51” was wherever I happened to sit. She brought it up because she and her husband, David, ate breakfast there the day before. (As loyal readers know, “Meet me at Table 51” is a regular feature in this newsletter.) Yes, Virginia, and Barbara, there really is a Table 51!• With a week to go before (trumpets, please) Issue 52, I’m curious if any readers have kept every issue. The first person to show me all 51 issues, it’ll be my treat for lunch.

Meet me at Table 51

Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.

If you ever get stopped for a traffic violation by motorcycle-riding Jeff Saputo, a deputy with the Indian River County Sheriff ’s Office, you might want to avoid making excuses. He’s heard ’em all. “I like honest, truthful people,” he said. “I like people who take responsibility for their actions.” Not that he’s going to let you off with a warning. Then again, he might. Every situation is different, he says. Jeff writes about 10 tickets per day. (He works four 10-hour days each week, so that’s an average of one ticket per hour.) “Red-light tickets are my thing,” he said with a smile. He joked that the intersection of State Road 60 and 58th

Avenue put him “on the map.” Red-light tickets are often challenged in court because it’s a 4-point violation on your driving record and the fine is $246. Consequently, to prevent the ticket from being dismissed, he usually spends part of his workweek telling his side of the story in the courtroom. “People are in a hurry to go nowhere,” he said of the red-light violators.

What about speeders? He has written his share of speeding tickets during his 17 years with the Sheriff ’s Office. One of his most memorable stops was for someone driving 100 mph in a 45-mph zone. It was on 58th Avenue between S.R. 60 and Oslo Road. He recalled the fine being $1,200. The only texting-while-driving ticket he’s issued was for a woman driving 73 mph is a 45-mph zone. The driver told the deputy she was late for work and was texting the office.

Jeff Saputo

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

While Indian River County is no stranger to hurricanes, earthquakes are a rare occurrence. Earthquake activity here is 97 percent smaller than the overall U.S. average.

The last earthquake, magnitude 3.0 or greater, within 300 miles of Vero Beach happened on June 11, 2001. Prior to that, the last one was on Feb. 22, 1992.
