PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Several hundred from county could qualify for certificates
Recently, I was given the honor to award Joan O’Steen of Vero Beach her first Florida Pioneer state certificate at the meeting of the Indian River Genealogical Society. This is a high honor presented by the Florida State Genealogical Society and given to those who have spent hours and sometimes years of their time to document their Florida heritage prior to March 3, 1845. This date is when Florida became a state. There are other certificates, such as Settlers and Builders. This is for those who arrived after 1845 and before Dec. 31, 1900. Several hundred people from Indian River County could qualify. The Florida Pioneer county certificate is for an ancestor who arrived prior to the county formation date. Indian River County formed May 30, 1925. According to the records of the Archive Center, it appears we may well have over 1,000 descendants of families that can apply for that certificate. If you are from another Florida county, check on the date it was
formed and see if your ancestors were there. Two other certificates are for Researcher and Memorial. One very famous person who is qualified for a county certificate (Lake County) and a Settlers and Builders certificate is Walt Disney. His grandparents were Charles Call and Henrietta Gross and they arrived in 1887. They are buried at Paisley. His father, Elias Disney, married Flora Call at Acron, Lake County in 1888.
Personally, I think this is why Walt wanted to build Disney World in Florida – it was near his grandparents’ home and burial place. Many Indian River County families qualify for these certificates, but the application is not easy. The Florida state Genealogical Society believes in sound documentation and facts that prove relationship and residence. There is help available.

JUST WONDERING: Which local candidates have the biggest campaign war chests for 2016?
Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the new season of “Big Brother” to unfold:
• One well-known Vero Beach restaurant decided to close, and another is serious about expansion. Southern Comfort, which moved from State Road 60 to the Miracle Mile area a few years ago, closed last week with no notice. Meanwhile, C.J. Cannon’s is planning to take over another restaurant. Everything is in place except the all-important lease agreement. C.J. Cannon’s would keep its restaurant at the Vero Beach Regional Airport. Chuck Cannon declined to go on the record with the name of the restaurant being added. He said it’s out of the respect for the current owner. The new restaurant will be called Eggsby’s. Chuck showed me the Eggsby’s logo. Underneath the name, it says: “A breakfast specialty restaurant by C.J. Cannon’s.”
Assuming the lease is approved, which isn’t a given, Chuck believes Eggsby’s could open as early as August. Longtime residents may recall the Cannon family operating four restaurants simultaneously in the county. Chuck’s brother, Bruce, operated one, but he moved to Tennessee – where he’s now involved in four restaurants. Chuck’s mom, Pat Cannon, will turn 76 next month. She’s still actively involved in running C.J. Cannon’s.• United Against Poverty – formerly known as the Harvest Food and Outreach Center – hopes to move from the east side of U.S. 1 to the west side in the next couple of years. It has signed a purchase agreement for the former citrus processing facility that’s just east of the County Administration complex.

LEMMON DROPS: C.J. Cannon’s looking to add another restaurant
pd. pol. adv., pd. for and approved by Susan Adams, Republican, for County Commission, District 1
AUGUST 30thVOTE
The closing date for the purchase agreement is July 2017, according to Jamie Jackson, who is the nonprofit’s director of Institutional Advancement. The 42,000-square-foot building will allow the nonprofit to have all of its programs under one roof.• If you’ve driven down 74th Avenue recently, you’ve seen the big chunk of land being cleared at 16th Street. The nearly 5-acre site is going to be a 92-unit housing development called The Willows. As I told John McCoy, the county’s head of Current Development, it’s amazing how many housing units have been built west of 58th Avenue during the past 5 years. “Someday there will be a grocery store out there,” he said. I’m surprised there’s not one out there already.• Richard Gillmor, who is running for County Commission, is known for his distinctive campaign signs – the Sebastian City Council member actually makes the signs himself. There’s a “campaign” sign on Fleming Street in Sebastian that made me laugh – it’s a homemade sign that says,
“Not Gillmor.”• In this space last week, I said it’s time for the Vero Beach Police Department to have more of a presence on the Barber Bridge because people were driving 65 mph. Richard Cahoy shared a June 2 email he sent to the police chief with the same complaint. Gene Desposito says the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office needs to have more of a presence on U.S. 1 between Highland Drive and 4th Street. He described that area, especially since the widening of U.S. 1, as an “International Speedway” most mornings, with many drivers going 65 mph – and there’s not a patrol car to be found.• Oftentimes, when my wife and I arrive before 7:15 a.m. at C.J. Cannon’s, we can sit in a booth by the window. For some reason, every booth was taken last week – which is unusual for a weekday in June. I asked our server, Lauri Moreno, why it was so busy. “I don’t know,” she said, “but I like it!”

Meet me at Table 51
Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what is a regular feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.
Bill Douglass and I have a lot in common. We both have deep roots in the Midwest. We worked in the newspaper industry for several years. When we were in our 50s, we started our own businesses. (Bill’s venture is WSI Digital Marketing.) There is a great difference between us, however. “I like complexity,” he said in reference to career stops where he rolled up his sleeves and went to work on turnaround projects. In contrast, I like simplicity. Bill, 63, said he became disenchanted with Corporate America because “the game had changed.” As a kid, Bill says he used to play “office.” He had a desk in
his house set up with things you might see in a cubicle in a corporate setting. That’s to say, he didn’t see himself leaving Corporate America … but he’s glad he did. “It was a real blessing,” he said. He bought a WSI franchise in 2009 when digital marketing was just “a toddler of an industry.” (WSI stands for “We Simplify the Internet.”) So, what is WSI’s mission?
“We harness the power of the Internet to help our clients grow their business,” he said. I asked him to explain the mission in, um, simpler terms. “We help bring more traffic to their website,” he said. “More traffic to the website equals more sales. Period.” Bill created a tourism website for the Indian River County Chamber of Commerce. The website (VisitIndianRiverCounty.com) was launched in late May. “It was a complicated project,” he said. Right up his alley.

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.
According to the 2010 Census, there were 60,176 occupied homes in Indian River County. Of those, the number of houses with three or more generations living under one roof was 1,775. Additionally, the number of homes with at least one person age 60-plus was 32,178.
