PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: The history of Pocahontas Park

Pocahontas Park in Vero Beach has a 102-year history. Herman Zeuch arrived 1912 from Davenport, Iowa. He was owner and president of the Indian River Farms Company and designated the park on a 1913 plat map and named all streets and parks after Native Americans from the Midwest. In May 1914, a new feature was added to the park. An alligator pool had been constructed near the artesian well, which was located on the southwest corner. The gators were captured by F. Charles Gifford. This began a long history of animal stories. In 1920, the Indian River Farms Company deeded the park with restrictions to the City of Vero Beach. It had to spend at least $1,000 a year for upkeep and must always keep it a park. The city almost lost the deed because the local politicians wanted to build on the property. The citizens of Vero protested.

In 1924, Louis Dellerman offered the city his private zoo consisting of 50 alligators and two coons for $35. “A growing city like Vero should have a zoo,” he said. The city hired a man to take care of the animals. A few months later they constructed a wading pool and an alligator pool. A year later, two more animals were added. A Florida black bear named Alice was purchased

by Senator Campbell and a bobcat was captured by Jim Tippin. A bear pen was built and plans were made to find a mate. A lot of excitement happened when Susie the bear arrived, owned by Arthur Hill. Sadly, Susie died a month later possibly from eating too much human food. Different playgrounds came and went. Then came the Banshee and the Palomino… Stay tuned for more on that in the next issue.Pam Cooper is supervisor of the Archive Center & Genealogy Department at the Indian River County main library.

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the first Christmas song on the radio:

• As if his $10,000 check earlier this year wasn’t enough, best-selling author James Patterson is doing the Vero Beach Book Center another favor. He has a book-signing appearance scheduled for Sunday (Nov. 8), from 1 to 3 p.m. “James Patterson has been extremely supportive of independent book stores,” said owner Chad Leonard. “Last year he gave $1 million to indies across the nation.” Vero Beach Book Center is celebrating its 40th year in business this fall. So, what’s the story about Patterson’s $10,000 check? “We heard that he was giving out money, so I simply applied for it,” Leonard said. “He is extremely passionate about encouraging children to read, so he wanted to know what our store offered for children. Well, our entire second

floor is for children and we often bring authors to schools, run book fairs … “We had also just combined the stores from two buildings to one, so I think he appreciated the hard work and the expense involved in that process.” With the Internet and national chains dominating book sales these days, Vero Beach is fortunate to have an independent book store of this caliber. Patterson isn’t the only big name making a book-signing appearance here. For example, David Baldacci will be here on Dec. 2. I asked Leonard about his level of pride in the store’s 40th anniversary. His parents opened the store in 1975. “I’m 41, so I’ve grown up in this store. I don’t know life without it,” he said. “Just like many people in town, I can’t

imagine Vero Beach without the Book Center. I think I feel my highest level of pride when customers tell me or the staff how much they love our store and how important it is.”• As longtime readers know, I become a Republican in even-numbered years before the August primary. (Background: I’m a true NPA, but in Indian River County, you have to be registered as a Republican to have a meaningful vote in local elections.) In 2016, I’ll probably be a Republican for most of the year, as I want to vote in the March 15 Presidential Preference Primary. Before GOP loyalists bristle at my plan, please note that I opted to watch last week’s Republican presidential debate over Game 2 of the World Series.• Conde Nast Travel’s 2015 Readers Choice Awards are out, and Vero Beach Hotel & Spa is No. 4 on the list of the best hotels in Florida. When you think of all the top-of-the-line hotels in the state, whether in Miami, West Palm Beach or Orlando, being ranked No. 4 is very impressive.

• I’ve been writing columns for 30 years, but this will be the first time I’ve ever typed the word “ebullient.” I’m doing so only because Jenny Seemayer, who is the general manager of Regus, gave me a deer-in-the-headlights look when she used the word in a recent conversation. In case you’re wondering, she did not describe me as ebullient. Rather, she opted for “stoic.” Ouch!• What’s the longest stretch of road in Indian River County without a stoplight or caution light? I’m thinking it’s on 58th Avenue, between Oslo Road and 4th Street. • With the Christmas season approaching, I received a “naughty or nice?”-type call last week completely out of the blue. Pastor James Womack said he would like to treat me to breakfast. Um, OK. (To be continued. Just by coincidence, we’re meeting for breakfast on Election Day, so I’ll let you know how it goes!)

Meet me at Table 51

Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.

Bob Craig is a photo-posting machine on Facebook. As a result, his page called “I remember Vero Beach when …” has become a great place to keep up with the day-to-day changes in the city. Heard about a restaurant opening or closing? Chances are, he’ll have it. He’s been known to post as many as 25 photos a day from around Vero Beach. “Photography is a fun hobby,” said Bob, who has been a Realtor in Florida for more than 40 years. (He first obtained his real-estate license as a teen in Orlando.) He says the Facebook page – which was launched in 2012 and has more than 1,200 followers – is not meant to be a tool

for historical research. That’s because it has already exceeded Facebook’s limit of 5,000 photos – which means the oldest photos are constantly getting bounced from the site and replaced by new ones. “I put out current stuff,” he said. “The page is about everyday goings-on in Vero Beach.” In addition to year-round residents, seasonal

residents and newcomers to the area are welcome to become part of this online community. “Everybody can relate to these photos,” he said. Every so often, Bob mounts what he calls a “crusade” to improve the look of Vero Beach. U.S. 1 is regularly targeted. “There’s no excuse to look shameful,” he said. “There are abandoned buildings all over, and nothing is ever done about them. They’ve been eyesores for decades.” He wants the “shaming” photos to lead to positive change. “Vero Beach is my town,” he said. “I care about this place.”

Bob Craig

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

November temperature extremes in Vero Beach …

All-time high temperature in November: 92 (set on Nov. 2, 1992, and Nov. 5, 2002).

All-time low temperature in November: 31 (set on Nov. 25, 1970).
