Intelligent Energy Distribution for Düsseldorf Subway Line

The city of Düsseldorf will use eaton technology

to implement the low-voltage main power dis-

tribution systems including intelligent energy

monitoring required for the expansion of its city

rail network. Over the next two years, five new

stations will gradually be completed in the inner

city and a new subway line added to the existing

network. In all, eaton will supply eight low-volt-

age power distribution systems for the stations

of the so-called Wehrhahn line, and these will

primarily be designed for underground but also

partly for above ground installation.

“For the city of Düsseldorf, energy efficiency

and sustainability were decisive factors in the

development of the project,” explained Chris-

toph Schink, the eaton power distribution sales

engineer who is handling the project. “The town

planners were therefore not only looking for a

solution that has been tried and tested in un-

derground rail applications over many years, but

also for an intelligent system that allowed the

effective monitoring and evaluation of energy

consumption and the switching of all loads. We

are delighted that we were able to offer a suit-

able concept using our technologies.”

eaton’s solution is based on the modular Ci

mounting cabinet system, that is particularly

ideal for harsh and climatically demanding envi-

ronments involving extreme temperatures (-40

°C to +80 °C). The Ci insulated enclosures have

been designed for fully insulated mounting and

are type tested to IeC 60439-1. each low-volt-

age power distribution system will be designed

with protection class 2 and IP 65 protection, and

for a maximum rated operational current Ie of

1,600 A. nZM circuit-breakers will be provided

with an integrated motor operator for simple

switching from the control center between the

mains supply and rail electricity.

are linked together using eaton’s innovative

SmartWire-DT connection and communication

system. As this not only allows data exchange

but also provides the power supply to the con-

nected components, the current consumption

of the individual loads can be logged and evalu-

ated without any difficulty. The XMC module

makes the relevant measuring data available for

calculating energy consumption (phase and n

conductor currents, rms voltages, active, reac-

tive and apparent power output, power factor).

The brains of the system are implemented in the

XV200 HMI/PLC which serves as the PLC, visu-

alization device and operator unit. It evaluates

the information and can monitor the operating

states of escalators, ticket machines and station

lighting systems. Functions can be activated or

shut down selectively in the event of an emer-

gency or in order to optimize consumption.

The building shells of the tunnel section and

the stations are currently under construction.

However, the installation of the first low-voltage

power distribution system at the Graf-Adolf-

Platz station is already planned for the middle

of the year. The gradual expansion and integra-

tion of the stations with eaton technology shall

be completed by the scheduled commissioning

of the Wehrhahn line in 2015.

Series of programmable DC

power supplies.

Complementing the Z+200,

Z+400 and Z+800 ranges, these

600W programmable power

supplies offer the same superior

features and carry a 5-year

warranty. Addressing the need

for high quality bench-top

power supplies for the R&D

environment, the new range shares the same dimensions as the

other Z+ ranges and thus offers high power density. The range is

also suited for ATE and OEM 2U rack mounted or integrated

applications such as Test & Measurement, Semiconductor Burn-in,

Component Test, Laser Diode, Heater Supplies, RF Amplifiers and

Electromagnets. Models in this series are available with output

voltages up to 100Vdc and output currents up to 60A. The Z+600

units can operate in either constant current or constant voltage

modes and accept a universal (85-265Vac) input. Higher power

systems can be achieved by connecting up to 6 identical units in

parallel with active current sharing. To increase the output voltage

or to provide a bipolar output, up to 2 units may be connected in

DIN-RAIL TERMINAL BLOCK SYSTEMFor Zone 2 hazardous areas

equipment applications: For

many years, X-COM S has been

used wherever time-saving

system wiring is required.

Approval for use in Zone 2 Ex

area expands the range of

applications for WAGO's pluggable S DIN-rail terminal block

system. All X-COM S Carrier Terminal Blocks and Female Plugs,

which are approved for Ex applications, are identified by the item

number suffix ".../0999-0953". With a maximum wire size of 2.5

mm² (AWG 14), they are designed for a nominal current of 20 A.

Compared to standard X-COM S components, the shorter locking

lever, which is factory-mounted on the female plug, makes

accidental disconnection even more difficult. Removing the female

plugs is only possible using an operating tool, providing additional

safety particularly for sensitive applications in hazardous areas.

X-COM S for Ex applications will be available in 1- to 15-pole

configurations in gray, blue and green-yellow. Each Ex module is

subjected to a high voltage test during the manufacturing process.

The modular design provides many possibilities to create custom

female plug assemblies. Connectors can be prepared regardless of

the final installation requirements and pre-assembled groups can

be tested prior to installation. Groups having the same number of

poles can be mechanically coded, preventing any mismating.

HARMONIC FILTERSFor 690 V systems

offering of solutions for the

improvement of power quality. The

active harmonic filters ECOsine

Active are now also available for

3-phase TN and IT 500 - 690 V

power grids. The filters provide the

system with an opposing corrective

current immediately, compensating

harmonics, phase shift and

load-unbalance at the same time.

They dynamically adapt to changing

grid and load situations, providing

an optimum compensation

performance at all times. The new

active filters for three phase networks on the level of 690 V/50 Hz

or 600 V/60 Hz are often used in heavy industry, chemical industry,

mining or oil exploration. The new active filters with the

designation FN 3420-200-690-3 can be programmed to the specific

needs of the application and provide up to 200 A of corrective

current. If more is needed, up to 10 units can be paralleled at the

same set of current transformers. State-of-the-art power electronics

with 3-level technology are at the core of the new filters, helping

to significantly reduce power loss. The 690 V active harmonic filters

come in sturdy IP54 rated cabinets. A UL-approved version (FN

3420-200-690-3-UL) is currently in preparation.

AS-I M8 MODULESFor applications with limited space

where space is at a

premium. In addition, the

units have been equipped

with the ecolink connection

technology. The full potting

ensures particularly high shock and vibration resistance. The

Compact M8 modules require little space due to their small width

of only 30 mm. They are suited for applications in robotics,

handling technology and assembly technology. Due to their high

protection rating IP 67 / IP 68 they can be used in the field, i.e.

close to the process. There are no long distances between sensors /

actuators and the control cabinet. Installation on robotic arms is

also possible without any problems. The series is available with

tried-and-tested AS-i technology or as a passive variant with round

cable connection. The modules are installed via two fixing holes

each from the front or from the side. Using the ecolink technology,

mounting faults can be reliably avoided. The integrated mechanical

end stop protects the O-ring from destruction caused by

over-tightening. So, rapid and secure installation is possible

without a torque wrench. The new AS-i Compact M8 module can

always be reliably used even in narrow applications and under

harsh conditions.

a cross-member and ensure that the lifting

cable moves along the boom. these booms

are used horizontally or inclined at an angle

of up to 30 degrees depending on the opera-

tion and weight.

the company Spierings Kranen, established

in 1987, counts as an innovator and the

market leader in the area of mobile fold-

ing cranes throughout europe. the company

manufactures cranes in various sizes for oth-

er european countries in the northern bra-

bant town of oss. Depending on whether a

customer needs a mobile folding crane with

four, five, six or seven axles, the right solu-

tion is produced under the management of

boss, Leo Spierings. this creates cranes with

varying ranges and the authorised weights

for the trolleys correlate with their sizes.

the further the distance between the load

and the vertical cross-member, the higher

the tilting torque. this means that up to 1.7

tonnes can be hung on the trolleys with a

60 metre range and up to 18 tonnes if the

distance is shorter.

Industrial gas springs are important for

emergency stops and putting cranes in the

parking position

Great care is taken in production due to the

shear extent of the individual crane assign-

ments and because there are always high

demands on the statics and safety. However

well a mobile folding crane is constructed,

there is always a residual risk involved with

operation of moving crane parts. A particu-

larly focus is put on the cables that serve

as tools. After all, there is the risk of cables

breaking in time due to the heavy loads ap-

plied. An associated loss of power would

lead to the trolley running uncontrollably

if inclined. the heavy masses would in turn

lead to immense damages once they start

moving. Preventing this was, and still is, the

job of industrial gas springs.

Pre-loaded with guide pulleys, these extend

in an emergency pushing out a locking pin,

which then clicks into the crane boom strut

construction and therefore stops the trolley

with its full weight after a short distance.

Alongside this emergency stop function,

gas springs also play an important role in

keeping the crane in the parking position:

they ensure a secure hold for parts locked in

place thanks to the gas springs.

Design engineers usually associate industrial gas springs with machine elements that support the opening and closing of flaps, covers, lids or portholes and reduce the strength users need to apply. Triggering the metal pin does not require much strength in this application, but it helps to slow down tonne weight masses in an emergency. The use of gas springs on mobile folding cranes is impressive proof.

Due to the fact that the Spierings Kranen research and development

team under the management of Leo Spierings is orientated towards

the future and is always improving the current concepts, the gas

springs that were previously installed were put through their paces

a short time ago. Doedijns, as a consulting company, drew Spierings’

attention to the new industrial gas spring models from Ace, which

display much faster extension speeds than those from another pro-

vider used before.

Industrial gas springs not only slow down quicker

conversion of the gas springs in the mobile folding cranes and the

change of provider were agreed to after several tests, as the new ma-

chine elements were not only able to convince with their extension

forces and speeds. Another advantage was displayed by the fact that

they can be mounted in a variety of positions. A compelling argument;

especially when they are being attached subsequently on several mo-

bile folding cranes, like in this case. thanks to the advice given to

Doedijns, the best gas springs including the assembly points could

be quickly established. this is something that also facilitates integra-

tion. the model called GS-28-500-ee-1300 was therefore identified

from the large product range offered by Ace, the damping specialist,

located in rhineland. With a stroke of 500 mm, this gas spring with a

body diameter of 28 mm displays an extension force of 1,300 n. this

is enough to press the locking pin out quickly and safely. two smaller

gas springs from Ace were also attached. the two GS-19-50-AA-350n

type models achieve an extension force of 350 n, each with a 50 mm

stroke length. they do not serve as an emergency stopper or parking

device, but provide the counterpressure in the construction. Although

you can’t always be guaranteed to choose the trolley without a wob-

bly wheel at the supermarket, you can be sure that the trolley on a

mobile folding crane from Spierings Kranen always locks into place

when necessary.

Bucher Industries Looking to Acquire Jetter AGBucher Industries intends to make the shareholders of Jetter AG a voluntary, public takeover offer via a subsidiary for a

price of EUR 7.00 per share. Bucher Industries has held a stake in Jetter AG since 2005, most recently amount to about

30%. Bucher Industries is planning to strengthen the competence of Jetter AG in the area of automation solutions and to

expand its market share. The aim of the takeover offer is to acquire all of the shares in Jetter AG. The Supervisory Board

and Management Board of Jetter AG support the takeover offer.

Since 2002, Jetter has been a partner of Bucher Industries, not

only developing and manufacturing electronic control systems

for Emhart Glass, but also supplying the electronics for municipal

vehicles manufactured by Bucher Municipal.

In the past two financial years, Jetter generated on average

around 50% of its turnover with the Bucher Group, with the ma-

jority of that turnover being accounted for by the Emhart Glass

division. With its operations in a broad-based market and its

leading technology, Jetter AG has qualified itself as a suitable

partner for Bucher, which is not active in the area of electronic

automation.

Successful First 8 Months for the Kübler GroupAs of August, the Kübler Group, based in Villingen-Schwenningen, achieved a high 18% increase in orders intake and 16%

in turnover for its business areas Position and Motion Sensors, Transmission technology and Counting and Process tech-

nology. As to the Managing Directors and associates, the brothers Lothar and Gebhard Kübler announced at the annual

press conference, Kübler is therefore in line with its budget plan with the aim of reaching a turnover of 52 million € for

the current business year. The number of employees exceeded 400, of which 25% are working for the Kübler Group outside

Germany, in one of the now 8 subsidiaries. A two-figure growth is

aimed to also for 2014. In 2013, subsidiaries have been founded

in the USA and Turkey. The growth was distributed regularly over

the first eight months of 2013, but there are nevertheless sev-

eral highlights. Three global customers placed major orders with

Kübler. After the strong decrease of the Chinese market, which

is an important market for Kübler, in 2012, the orders intake is

picking up again. The Company is growing also in the USA and

in some European countries. Germany showed a growth of 13%.

MIDEST 2013: Level of Bookings Same as Last YearAs of mid September, the level of bookings for MIDEST 2013

(november 19-22, Paris nord Villepinte Exhibition Centre),

was the same as last year. Looked at in detail, however, there

has been an increase of around 10% in the number of inter-

national exhibitors and a roughly equivalent drop in exhibitors

from France. This is likely to be due to the difficulties that

France and its suffering industry are experiencing, balanced

out, so far as the show goes, by the efforts made over recent

years by MIDEST to attract foreign companies and so to re-

inforce its position as the world’s leading industrial subcon-

tracting show. Despite the economic rocks, MIDEST 2013 has

rounded the cape and is coordinating new activities and spe-

cial operations in support of industrial subcontracting. These

include focusing on a sector for the future, energy, and, for the

first time, choosing a non-European country, South Africa, as

its country of the year. There will also be a special Algerian

programme and an initiative aimed at making the mechanical

engineering trades attractive to girls undertaken by the FIM

(mechanical engineering federation). These highlights will be

accompanied by a completely new web site designed to help

its visitors carry out searches

all year long, to raise the pro-

file of the various sectors of

industrial subcontracting and

to broadcast market news.
