Wildcat Construction EntersSecond Year of $79M Job

Construction employment rose between April 2015and April 2016 in two-thirds of the nations metro areas, while spending on most types of structures increased forthe year despite a drop in the latest month, according toa new analysis of federal data on employment and con-struction spending released June 1 by the AssociatedGeneral Contractors of America. Association officialssaid that many parts of the country continue to benefitfrom strong demand for construction services.Construction growth remains widely distributed by

location and project type, said Ken Simonson, the asso-ciations chief economist. However, job gains wereuneven: many states included metros with large gainsbut also areas that lost jobs. Some of those metros mighthave added construction jobs if contractors had beenable to find enough qualified workers. The dearth ofskilled construction workers in many areas threatens tohold down the extent of job gains in the comingmonths. There were construction employment gains in the past

year in 235 out of 358 metro areas, losses in 67 areas, and no change in 56. Anaheim-Santa Ana-Irvine, Calif.,added the most construction jobs (14,900 jobs, 17 per-cent), followed by Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, Fla.(8,800 jobs, 15 percent); New York City (7,800 jobs, 6percent); and Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, Ariz. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Localgovernment leaders in Indiana arepoised to receive an influx of statemoney for road construction proj-ects this summer. The Evansville Courier &

Press reported that the fundingtakes the form of a one-time gift,

derived from an excess in incometaxes, that state lawmakers choseto give local governments. Posey County Commissioner

James Alsop said he foresees anincrease in construction statewidebecause you never want to passup on free money.

Posey County received about$1.7 million from the state, whileGibson County received$900,000. Warrick andVanderburgh counties received$2.5 million and $3.1 million, respectively. The gift amount wasdetermined by population size.

State lawmakers said localgovernments also can use themoney as their matching fundsfor the Community Crossingsgrant from the IndianaDepartment of Transportation.Grant money will be distributed

MILWAUKEE (AP) Milwaukee is getting a $1 millionstate loan to begin the costly task of replacing 70,000 leadwater pipes throughout the city. Public works officials say the priority is replacing pipes to

385 state-licensed day care centers in Milwaukee, since noneof the citys public schools get their water through lead pipes. The work will take three years. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported it would cost

$500 million to $750 million to fully replace all the cityslead service lines, which connect water mains with resi-dences built before 1951. The work might take three to fivedecades, though the timetable could be sped up if federalfunds become available. Absent disturbances from construction projects, which

can increase lead levels, tests confirm Milwaukees tap wateris safe to drink.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) An appeals court has sided with a fed-eral judge who ordered the Fargo-Moorhead DiversionAuthority to halt construction on a ring levee south of Fargountil an environmental review is completed. The Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals in an opinion issued

June 20 sided with U.S. District Judge John Tunheims May2015 decision that the law requires all federal and state envi-ronmental reviews be completed before construction. Opponents of the planned $2 billion Red River diversion

filed a lawsuit against the dike project, which is meant to pro-tect structures in the Oxbow, Hickson and Bakke areas thatwould be flooded by a staging area in times of high water. The diversion authority had argued the ring dike was sep-

arate from the overall project. An attorney for the authoritydidnt immediately respond to a request for comment.

Roland Machinery Co. Hosts Intelligent Machine DemoRoland Machinery Co. hosted an intelligent machinecontrol demonstration at its location at 604 StokelyDrive, Deforest, Wis., on June 15. Lunch was provid-ed at the event, and company representatives had Komatsudozers and excavators, equipped with new intelligentmachine technology, on site for customers to learn about andoperate. The intelligent machines are designed to help cus-tomers increase their production, improve their performance, lower their costs and provide a high-quality finished producton their job sites.

Kyle McDowell, the technology solutions expert ofRoland Machinerys fleet of intelligent machine controlmachinery, was one of the representatives on hand to helpcustomers. He explained that intelligent machine control isan integrated technology for bulldozers and excavators.

Basically, its taking any kind of GPS machine controlfeature, any kind of machine automation feature, and inte-grating it into the machine directly from the factory, saidMcDowell. There are no wires and no extra componentsbolted on the outside of the machine. It also means you areonly dealing with one product support source. You are deal-ing specifically with the Komatsu distributorship as far as allforms of support go everything from GPS grade controlproducts, all the way down to the machine control and themachine maintenance itself.

Access to distributorship technology solutions staff comesstandard with the D61PXi-size dozers and larger and all exca-vator models with integrated technology. This staff canremotely log in and support the GPS machine control sys-tems. This support also is optional on smaller dozers withintegrated technology. As long as the staff has a cellular con-nection, they can remotely control the GPS monitor allowingthe staff to diagnose problems, walk an operator through thecontrol features and settings and monitor GPS performance. In the past, a contracting company had multiple sources tocall when an issue would arise. Roland Machinerys numberone goal since the inception of these machines is to give cus-tomers peace of mind knowing they only need one contact foreverything from oil changes to GPS.

McDowell also explained the differences between theexcavator system and the dozer system. The dozer system istied in, not only to the blade automation to control the height

Attendees Converge on Drone Focus Conference in FargoDrone Focus Conference, the all-day, all-dronesevent, was held in Fargo,N.D., on June 1. Organized byEmerging Prairie, a nonprofitorganization in Fargo, the eventbrought together a sold-out crowdof 300 attendees with numerousspeakers to discuss the unmannedaerial systems (UAS) industry.RDO Integrated Controls, a divi-sion of RDO Equipment Co., wasa major sponsor of the event for thesecond year in a row.

    Why Fargo?

North Dakota has gained nation-al recognition as a leader in UAStechnology and business imple-mentation. What began in Fargo asthe monthly, Drone FocusMeetup where educators, studentsand enthusiasts could discuss regu-lations, technology and businessopportunities, evolved into the full-day event. Interest in the monthly meetups

was growing rapidly, said GregTehven, co-founder and executivedirector of Emerging Prairie. Werecognized the need for a dedicat-ed drone conference and knew thevalue of it being held in Fargowhere so much UAS action is hap-pening.With six FAA-approved test

sites, major universities and avia-tion schools, and a huge presencein the agriculture and energy sec-tors, North Dakota is a naturalhome for innovation and growth inthe UAS industry.

    Speaker Highlights

John Hoeven, U.S. senator andformer governor of North Dakota,

kicked off the event with a wel-come address. A vocal and long-time advocate of UAS innovation,Hoeven hit home on NorthDakotas leadership in the industry, noting how the state is advancingthe integration of UAS into nation-al airspace and empowering busi-nesses, from local startups to inter-national corporations, to find new

applications for the technologyincluding improving agricultureoperations, delivering goods toconsumers, supporting lawenforcement, or securing thenation. Among the more anticipated

speakers of the event was BaptisteTripard, managing director ofsenseFly. His talk included a gen-

eral overview of UAS applicationsin agriculture, surveying, andinspections, as well as insight intothe future of UAS. He illustratedthe benefits of UAS with a story ofsenseFlys role in a project thatmapped the surface ofSwitzerlands iconic mountain, theMatterhorn. What previously took

RDO product specialists were on hand to answer any questions posed by guests of the sponsored lunch, which was provided by RDOEquipment. (L-R) are Bryan Knowlen, Aaron Brehmer, Tony Kramer, Ben Hildre and RDO Agronomist Nate Dorsey.

Abers Towing & CraneService, founded by Miles andAlene Aber in 1950, has growninto an 18 to 20-employee opera-tion, which divides its time equallybetween its hauling, towing andcrane services. Jerry Aber, son of Miles and

Alene, and Aaron Aber, son ofJerry, now share the responsibilityof running and managing the busi-ness. The company conducts busi-ness primarily within a 50 to 60-mi. radius of its home base inAshland, Ohio.Abers fleet consist of light-duty

and heavy-duty tow trucks, roll-backs, Landolls, flatbed and detachtrailers and cranes. This wide vari-ety of equipment in its fleet allowsAbers to assist its customers seldom having to turn work awaybecause the company doesnt have theequipment needed to perform a job. This is important to the company.Jerry Aber decided it was time to

acquire a crane to fill the gapbetween the companys 40-ton (36t) and 90-ton (81 t) cranes. His con-cern was that if the 90-ton cranewas out on a job and the 40-tonwasnt big enough, that he would-nt be able to meet customersneeds and would have to turn awaywork. His experience led him to seeif he could locate a used crane (thecompany had always purchasedused cranes in the past). As Jerry began the process of

trying to find a used crane, he pri-

marily looked at Grove cranesbecause of brand familiarity three of the four cranes in his fleetwere Grove. They produce good quality

equipment and have excellentservice and support for a goodprice, he said.Jerry already had a working

relationship with Groves author-ized Ohio dealer, Cleveland Crane& Shovel Sales, so it was naturalhe start his search with them. In thepast, the dealership had been veryresponsive to his equipment andservice needs, Jerry said. One time,Jerry had a crane out of service andwas able to get a Cleveland Crane& Shovel Sales technician on thephone who walked him throughthe process of getting the crane upand running again, without theexpense of a service call.Cleveland Crane & Shovel

became a Grove dealer in 2008when Manitowoc was in theprocess of consolidating its dealerswho handle both lines. As one ofthe oldest Manitowoc dealers inthe United States, Cleveland Crane& Shovel was a natural choice forthe Ohio market. All of the dealer-ships technicians attend Groveschools, starting with CraneSystems Theory and CraneTechnology & Operation. Two ofCleveland Crane & Shovels tech-nicians, Joe Nanni and Carl Goins, are GMK (Grove Mobile Crane)certified, and Scott Lowries, serv-

ice manager, has achieved 6.1GMK certification. When Aber discussed his plans

to purchase a used crane withAndy Forepaugh, Cleveland Crane& Shovel Sales vice president ofsales, their conversation quicklyturned to the benefits of purchasinga new crane instead of purchasinga used crane. The new 2016 GroveTMS 700E 60-ton hydraulic truckcrane met all of the criteria that

Abers was looking for.The Grove TMS 700E 60-ton

hydraulic truck crane is ideal foruse in a wide range of applications, such as setting transformers, smallgenerators and small pre-castwork; pouring concrete for bridgeabutment footers; and loading andunloading steel coils from trucks. The crane also is well suited fortruck accident recovery, which fitsin nicely with Abers Towing &

Crane Services towing work.Among the many features that

appealed to Abers are the 110-ft.four section main boom, twowinches, the one-man operationand quick set up. The crane carriesits own counterweights and, withpermits, is easily road trans-portable. The compact design isnot over width or length, is pow-ered by a Tier IV Cummins dieselengine, and can reach highwayspeeds of up to 65 miles per hour.Technical specifications of the

    Grove TMS 700E 60-ton hydrauliccrane include: 50-ton or 60-ton capacity; A four-section, full-power

sequenced synchronizedMEGAFORM vertical boom witha maximum tip height of 118 ft.designed for exceptional verticaland lateral strength; A 33- to 56-ft. folding lattice

    swing-away extension that is off-settable at 0, 25 and 45 degrees with a max-

imum tip height of 172 ft. andstows alongside the base boomextension; Two 20-ft. lattice extensions

which increase maximum tipheight to 212 ft. when employedwith the swing-away extension; A quick reeving type boom

nose mounted on heavy dutytapered roller bearings with remov-able pin-type rope guards; Counterweights consisting of
