What is your philosophy? This may seem like an out of the ordinary question for the Publisher of a brand new “business magazine” to be asking. But since we are dedicating this Inaugural Issue of Moguls Magazine to wealth foundations, it is certainly most appropriate. Your philosophy is what you know. How you hold it. And how it effects what you do. The simplest way to determine one’s philosophy is to view your daily actions…all actions. Even the actions you feel are insignificant. Your philosophy is a way of thinking. It is a “filter” for letting things in and keeping things out. The foundation of your thinking can and will effect the foundation of your wealth. What is it that you hold important? How do you make decisions around those things you hold as important in your life? When one decides to become an Entrepreneur that decision must be backed by a supportive philosophy. Backing your decision with a philosophy of financial independence and freedom is an absolute must. Your philosophy will keep you focused on your overall goals and objectives. It will keep you grounded in your truth. This issue is just the beginning of things to come. I thought it was important to create a publication that is dedicated to building wealth through entrepreneurship and targeted to the Urban (Black and Latino) community. Growing up both Black and Latino gives me a unique perspective from which to draw ideas. There is such a thin line between our communities and we both struggle for the common cause. And that cause is the right to pursuit happiness and to bootstrap our way towards the American dream. This issue lays the foundation from which we can build. And it quantifies my personal philosophy. And that philosophy is

that we must do all and be all that we are created to be. We cannot die with our music inside. We owe it to our ancestors and to those who have paved the way for our freedoms to excel at being the best “us” we can be. It’s time for bigger thinking, bigger dreams, bigger ideas and greater action. It all starts locally in our own back yard(s). Your support of Moguls Magazine and our online communities MogulsLifestyleNetwork.com and WhoIsBlackAmerica.com and the Swan Simpson Media Group of Companies helps us to stay in the game. We can no longer sit back and blame the so called media for its lack of respect or limited perspective of what’s important to us. We have to become the thing that we seek to influence. We have to become the media. My dream is to build a platform where we can employ talented, capable, able bodied thinkers, creative types, intellects, artists, writers and dreamers who will step down from the nightmare of poverty, discourse & unbelief. Who will roll up their sleeves and say that I am available to do more good than our community has ever seen…together. And pave the course with success for all of us in this great country. Be all that you can. Join forces with like minds. Trust your gifts. Pursue your dreams today.

The 3 Unbreakable Rules For Creating A SUPER BRAND In Today’s Economy

The 3 Unbreakable Rules For Creating A SUPER BRAND In Today’s Economy

Coca-Cola is the #1 SUPER BRAND in the world, with an estimated brand value of 66.7 Billion Dollars(in 2008). The #100 SUPER BRAND is Visa with an estimated brand value of 3.3 Billion Dollars. In between that, there are 98 other Super Brands(that are worth Billions) and 100s (even THOUSANDS) of other Brands that have reached SUPER BRAND status.

How Did They Do It?All these brands that we know and love today, all started out as Working Brands, which became Master Brands and ultimately reached the level of SUPER BRAND STATUS!! They did this by making sure they followed a certain sequence that I’m going to share with you in just a second. But before I do that let’s make sure we’re clear on the answer to a VERY important question, which is….

What Is Branding?According to Entrepreneur.com the definition of “Branding” is, “the marketing practice of creating a name, symbol or design that identifies and differentiates a product from other products.” Now I would agree with that, but I would also add that “Branding” also consist of how people feel or think about you when you, your company, product, or service is mentioned.

Before we get into Rule #1, I want you to understand that in today’s economy consumers want to be able to connect with a person, not a company or logo! This is why Subway has Jared, Apple has Steve Jobs(R.I.P), Microsoft has Bill Gates, a lot of the law firms have the actual attorney on their commercials and billboards, why big corporations bring on celebrities to represent their product or service because people want to connect with other real people!

Ok, I’m off my soap box, so let’s dive into…

RULE #1 You want to create and distribute unique and valuable SUPER BRAND content! You want this content to be “Edu-taining!” Yes, I said “Edu-taining,” because you want this content to be educational so that you’re actually teaching your potential customer something so now they feel like you really care and at the same time you want your content to be entertaining and infused with personality so that it’s not boring and this makes it easy to consume.

RULE #2 Please a SUPER BRAND Community! Pinpoint your Target Market, which I also like to call your “Perfect Prospect,” and focus on providing value to this community in the form of content that provides solutions to the problems that your Community has and demonstrate how your product or service as the solution. Now it’s easier for your community to buy from you because they are making an educated decision to buy versus you just blatantly selling them something because “people love to buy, but they HATE being sold to!” This is also known as “Consultative Selling.”

RULE #3 Make A SUPER BRAND Promise! What are you willing to promise your SUPER BRAND Community? Enter the conversation that’s going on inside your prospect’s head. Understand that you have two types of customers and they are Please Seekers and Pain Avoiders.

In your marketing message, if you can move the Pleasure Seekers closer to the pleasure that they desire and move the Pain Avoiders further away from the pain they’re wanting to avoid, you’re on your way to making millions of dollars.

These are the Top 3 Rules for Creating a SUPER BRAND in Today’s Economy and I truly hope that you will apply them into your business so that you can see the fruits for yourself! The Crowdfunding Movement

The Crowdfunding Industry Report by Massolution put out data showing the overall crowdfunding industry raised $2.7 billion in 2012, across more than 1 million individual campaigns globally. In 2013 the industry is projected to grow to $5.1 billion. (Forbes, 5/2013).

Crowdfunding is a marriage between entrepreneurship and philanthropy. It has re-fueled the ‘dreamers’ and given new wings to social causes. Within the U.S. literally tens of thousands of projects were successfully funded in 2012….from the cup-cake lady to the independent filmmaker. The common thread of a successful crowd funding campaign is this; tell your story, make a compelling video about what you’re doing, why, what the money will go towards, and how much is needed to complete the project. Simple? While the concept is simple, like anything worth having it takes work to execute a good solid campaign.

Kenectit.com crowdfunding platform launches in Atlanta

Atlanta-based 5 Star Training ATL (business development and training consultancy) has worked with enough new start-ups to realize that Atlanta needs a crowd funding platform. So it launched Atlanta’s first; Kenectit.com back in December 2013. The site is a localized rewards-based crowd funding platform unique to Atlanta startups. The initial campaigners will be businesses who have refined their vision, done their business planning and are ripe and ready to be funded.

Community development and Kenectit.com

Atlanta is a fertile breeding ground for entrepreneurial ventures. The varied associations such as Atlanta Lean Start-up, Urban League, and grass roots community development organizations are prime targets for partnering opportunities with Kenectit.com. Crowd funding is well on its way to replace traditional business lending and will augment new business start-up growth. Don’t be left behind.

Before we give crowd-funding the props it deserves for becoming the most exciting new way to fund business and social projects, let me tell you where the concept originates. I doubt that you would have heard this in the chat rooms…

‘Susu’ means ‘small, small’Susu has become the term used to describe a long time African tradition. It speaks to the way small scale community-based lending happens still today in small towns and villages throughout the Diaspora. Susu is used to fund business projects, homes, and personal life emergencies for people who typically do not have access to traditional loans and bank services.

How it’s OrganisedThe basic structure of Susu is a money-pool, each person in the pool gets a turn at being the benefactor. Each participant follows the honor system to repay the funds so as to keep the community strong and the resources flowing.

Family, friends, and co-workers share in each other’s success. The rewards extend beyond financial viability to that of enabling the common good to be a focal point for consumers and business owners alike.

Yolanda Williams has Consulted with Fortune 100 companies & others including; GE, Abbott Labs, Ford Motor Company, Home Depot, SunTrust, Wendy’s/Arby’s Group, Teradata, United Rentals, The Gap, Sears Holding Company, and E*Trade Financial. She is the CEO of KenectIT where she plans to enable the start-up of 1000 new businesses.

Black Technology WatchContributor Christine Johnson “Sometimes You Gotta Step Back To Startup”

PRE-STARTUP...1. LEARN THE LINGO: When in Rome... Becoming startup

literate is important because it demonstrates not only a competency of the culture’s terms but a grasp of the elements that are important for success in your navigation. Here is a great slideshare, Startup Lingo for Dummies from Nasscom Startups.

2. TEST DRIVE: Hackathons and Startup Weekends are events where programmers, graphic designers, interface designers and project managers and others collaborate on a project intensively for a few days. They are educational and provide an opportunity to experience going from concept to development of a product, working with a team and getting a taste of this “go hard” culture. (Quick Plug: A successful team is comprised of various roles. Startup Institute is a celebrated program that highlights this and trains professionals for the startup workforce.)

3. ACCESS RESOURCES: You won’t succeed just because you’re awesome. More often than not, the resources needed to begin this journey are not within your immediate sphere. Take the time to research the most productive events to attend in order to leverage people resources in your technology eco-system. Taking advantage of the those in your region’s technology hub will be helpful as you build the foundation for your network-base, then expand from there. Beyond a basic web search, Meetup.com and Eventbrite.com are good to gauge the initial local outlets. Up Global is also a great starting point to access your ecosystem.

4. FIND YOUR TRIBE: Technology entrepreneurship is exhilarating, but can be lonely and emotionally taxing. While Entrepreneurship is not a new concept for communities that are Latino and from the African Diaspora, the technology startup life creates a larger degree of angst and confusion given its grave degree of risk and uncertain timetable for return. Purposely seek-out those with whom you share similar experiences as a minority in this space. The unique camaraderie will offer a much needed sounding board.

5. STUDY STUDY: This landscape is ever-changing and can be overwhelming, but staying in the loop and aware of the latest best practices, success stories, even winners and losers will serve you well as you build your company, knowledge-base and network. Begin to approach entrepreneurship as a scholar. Utilize various online resources to stay on top of the latest content (videos, blog posts, Google Alerts, online courses, etc.) on technology startups, minorities in technology, technology eco-systems and hubs, along with entrepreneurship, accessing capital, building a startup team and other relevant areas. (Assignment #1: Google “Lean Startup Methodology”.)

She has been recognized in various publications including Black Enterprise, Tech Cocktail, Washington Business Journal, as well as featured on Technology Today Radio, The Mario Armstrong Show, #NPRBlacksintech and more.

Exploring the conundrum of the lack of technology diversity is a trending hot topic that has received widespread attention and an increasing number of organizations dedicated to curbing the issue. The various strategies employed have included a) feeding the pipeline via STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) programs, and b) fostering the growth of minority technology entrepreneurs (e.g. accelerators, funding platforms and conferences). Now, while these approaches are impactful, let’s consider another vantage point - taking a step back, before you startup. So, ya have an idea and you’re all excited and you have your pitch ready and mapped-out how much you need to build and launch and make billions. So, you have an idea and you’re excited, now it is time to prepare. This is the Pre-Startup Phase. At this point entrepreneurs should focus on firmly acclimating themselves to the startup culture and stocking-up on baseline arsenals of tools and resources. These steps may appear very basic, because they are. Yet, they play an important role in developing a foundation for the work ahead to build your company - better familiar with the ride ahead.

Now, when I say that communication is a path to success, I definitely do not only mean financially. Wealth is an amazing side effect of being skilled in the art of speech. A plethora of small, equally amazing side effects are what make communication such a powerful tool. Confidence, self-reliance, cer-tainty, and fortitude are all gifts given to those who are crafty wordsmiths. And that’s only the tip of the iceberg; how does being able to identify what kind of a person someone is by simply listening to a few thoughts or ideas sound? Being a good communicator starts in the mind. By manipulating your thoughts and creating strings of words accordingly, you can easily speak with anyone in a way that they will feel comfortable; therefore adding more and more into the conversation.

So, let’s get back to that room full of 50 possible business prospects.

How many people should someone expect to pull out of that group of 50? Maybe 2 people will show some mild interest in your company, product or service. However, if you effectively utilize some in-credible communication skills, all of a sudden, you would be able to maximize a percentage of people in that same room who crave to have an opportun-ity to buy into whatever it is you’re offering. That in a nutshell is the advantage of the power of effective communication.

Here are a few tips to help you become a more effective communicator.

You should speak in three different voices:

1. The high voice. The high voice is your motivat-or voice, your preacher voice, your coach voice. It is loud, dynamic and it should fire up the audience.

2. The medium voice. The medium voice is your more conversational, instructional voice.

3. The low voice is simply speaking in a lower manner like a whisper.

By utilizing just these few tips, you will dramatically increase opportunities when speaking to others about your business.

You don’t have to take it from just anybody. Take it from some of the greatest business people of our time: John D. Rockefeller, Warren Buffet and Stephen Covey. All three are icons of astound-ing success in their respective fields and all three sing a common tune: communication skill is the single most significant skill that has caused them to soar to the top of their chosen endeavors.

Simply put, words are what make almost all interactions between people possible. So in turn, what is the easiest way to make mon-ey? Utilize the communication phenomenon in the most effective manner possible.

On any given day, how often does the average person talk to someone? Countless times. Exploiting the knowledge to key skills in communication is vital to every business’ success. Think of every sales pitch you’ve ever given. If you gave a business pitch to a room of about 50 people, how many should you expect to buy into or invest in your offering? Imagine giving a speech that causes an eruption of excitement and gives you the best possible outcome. That’s what effective communication can do for your business.

Effective CommunicationWords are the greatest superpower.

Samsung “Royal TV” Will Set You Back $150,000If you’re like me, you may be in the process of giving your house a makeover for Spring to fit your New Year attitude. While recently vacationing in New York’s Times Square, I saw the gigantic tourist Jumbo-tronTV with all of those live news feeds. Being a tech geek, I began thinking to myself, “How nice would it be to have one of those in my living room!”Imagine hosting a Super BowlParty or a private soiree watching the latest episode of Scandal on a television that magnitude.

After some careful research, it seems that the good folks at Samsung had the exact same idea. Samsung recently announced the release of the new 110” Ultra HD television for personal use. The new television has four times the resolution of your average High-Def television and has the estimated size of a KING SIZED BED! According to the Asso-ciated Press, this new ritzy product is only sold in China, the Middle East, and Europe and already has numerous buyers since its December release & Mogul priced at a sweet $150,000.

Ask Dr. G

QUESTION:I’ve been working for my family business for 2 years and I am stressed out! I have to deal with difficult clients all day. I work more than 70 hours a week. Not to mention, my Father expects me to not have a social life until business gets better. I can’t just quit because this is my sole income. What can I do to manage my stress and survive my job without going off on my Father? – T. Edwards

Dear T.Edwards –

Seems to me that you may be in the same boat as the 8 out of 10 Americans negatively affected by work related stress. Generally speaking, small amounts of stress can actually be good for the body. It is only when stress levels remain high for long periods (or become chronic) that stress can actually cause serious health concerns. Chronic stress not only contributes to lowered immunity, but also your digestion and reproductive systems can stop working normally. Try my 3 Secret Tips to Manage Stress!

1. Change your sleep pattern. The best quality sleep is had between the hours of 10pm and 6am. Fit most of your sleep in that window of time and awake more refreshed to take on the day.

2. Get your heart pumping. 10-15 minutes of moderate level exercise each day can help to clear your mind and invigorate your mood and attitude. Make it 20-30 minutes if time allows and watch the benefits double.

3. Create simple pleasures. One thing I do is open a window. Opening a window not only allows the fresh air to enter your space, but also symbolizes options and movement. The worst part of chronic stress is feeling stuck, trapped, or unable to cope. Creating your own “simple pleasure” will put Y-O-U back in control.

Janet Jackson’s Lessons on being Black, Beautiful and a Billionaire by @SwanSimpson, Publisher of Moguls Magazine

When my master mind alliance and I were sitting around discussing this first issue of Moguls Magazine, there was no question in my mind about WHO was going to grace the inaugural cover. Please let it be known that I am a life-long humongous fan of Janet Jackson of epic proportion. In fact we “grew up” together. Of course I don’t mean that literally. But I grew up with her music and her career and with posters of her plastered all over my bedroom walls (don’t judge me lol).

I remember when Janet signed with A&M Records and took “control” of her music career from her father. It’s that Janet that made me want her on the cover of Moguls Magazine. It is that Janet that has catapulted to the top of the Music Industry being named by Billboard Magazine as one of the most successful Artists of all time.

Janet Jackson grew up in a very demanding environment. Her Father Joe instilled into her and her famous brothers an unwavering work ethic. This work ethic has driven Janet to the top of the charts as well as the top of the Music Industry. And the Music Industry is STILL serious business.

When Janet decided to take control of her career, she took control of her brand, her company, her business. As the driving force behind Damita Jo, she has experienced monumental successes

where the numbers tell no lies.

In fact, when Janet left A&M and changed labels, she signed two record breaking multimillion dollar deals with Virgin Records. And to date, she’s sold over 130 million records. The numbers speak for themselves. According to E! News, the multi-talented performer reportedly earned $458 million from her concert tours; $304 million from her roles in films including, “The Nutty Professor” and “For Colored Girls”; $260 million in album sales; and netted more than $81 million from sponsorship deals. That’s a certified BILLION DOLLARS PLUS.

In 2014 the beautifully talented and brilliant mind of Janet Jackson leaves us clues as to how we can learn from her successes as well as from a few missteps, like the forever famous wardrobe malfunction while performing with Justin Timber lake at the Super bowl nearly a decade ago. Here’s a play by play on Janet’s Billionaire Lessons for both the rising Mogul and the experienced Mogul alike. We’ve gotten a ton of quotes and have given them some context in this article as Janet is busy traveling around the world enjoying life with her new hubby Billionaire Wissam Al Mana. To that end, we will use the quotes to round out the lessons all Moguls can discern from the mind and the mouth of Business Woman Janet Damita Jo Jackson.

Billionaire Life Class Our Feature Story

www.BlackMogulsMagazine.com

Page 13: Moguls Magazine Issue 1

The Fundamentals

What is the first thing everyone needs to know about Janet Jackson the individual, the business woman, the oh so sweet and innocent looking person, the brand….

“People do see me as sweet and innocent. Not to say that I am not those things. But I have other sides to me.”

LOL that is funny because I believe we’ve seen those “other sides” come out from time to time. But what Moguls readers really want to know more about is how Janet views business and her brand. When did you decide that it was time to do something different for Damita Jo….

“It was the Control album that was really about what I wanted to do”.

Yes. The Control album says it all. The album seems to represent you taking control of your music, your career as well as your sexuality. It would seem that you had this all mapped out like a huge plan of attack. I’m curious as to how you’ve mapped out your career. It seems with each album you do something different like a reinvention of yourself.

“I’ve never been into what am I going to do next, trying to reinvent myself.”

So, what I’m gathering is that you take more of the go with the flow approach. Allowing things to happen instead of trying to make things happen. I would have to say that’s very interesting.

What’s the one central driving force that could be attributed to your incredible success….

“I’m a true believer in prayer, a big believer in prayer.”

As you know, many Entrepreneurs and brands are faced with setbacks or failures. So, let’s talk about the now famous Super Bowl situation also known as “Nipplegate”. Before Nipplegate, your brand’s reputation seemed unscathed. Even with you driving towards social issues involving gay rights (the Rhythm Nation album); then sexuality with the very sensuous and often controversial Velvet Rope album…none of that required the damage control of Nipplegate. What lessons or thoughts do you have about Nipplegate….

For this we never got a quote. But it is apparent that every brand can be met with controversy and how you manage that controversy is very important. One cannot always get bogged down in what people have to say. But a legitimate business concern that could tarnish your brand requires you to take proactive involvement. And our lesson from Janet is to simply APOLOGIZE. Here’s how she responded to the situation.

“The decision to have a costume reveal at the end of my halftime show performance was made after final rehearsals,” Jackson said in a statement.

“MTV was completely unaware of it. It was not my intention that it go as far as it did. I apologize to anyone offended -- including the audience, MTV, CBS and the NFL.”

THE LESSON OF RACE

Socially and economically, it would appear that Nipplegate ended Janet’s music career. It was after this tragic mishap that Janet’s

career took a harsh beating. She struggled to sell out concert tours and the often brutal and unrelenting mainstream media would not let us forget this one blemish on a life-long flawless career. It would all seem so unfair. But some would say other factors were at work including race.

In her book Sister Citizen, Dr. Melissa Harris-Perry writes that black women are often trying to stand up straight in a crooked room tilted with stereotypes and socioeconomic factors that can put them at a disadvantage. Jackson may have thought Nipplegate was a mere “wardrobe malfunction,” but the flash of nudity went beyond that: She had unwittingly sparked America’s dismal Jezebel trope surrounding black female sexuality — the idea that black women are irrational sexual beings that must be controlled and stamped out. Janet bore the blame for Nipplegate alone — everyone associated with the production claimed ignorance and after his vague apology, Justin Timber lake didn’t discuss the event again. Janet expressed her disappointment in Justin Timber lake leaving her out there to drown alone, saying that she would not expect that from a friend.

It would seem that with all of the drunken craziness, rumored child abuse and sexual deviance done by so many other well known Artists, such as Britney Spears…that Janet Jackson who was once the darling of the Music Industry, would receive some degree of forgiveness and redemption. But that has yet to happen.

The lesson here is to never sell your soul to the highest bidder. Speak to your base, your followers, your fans, your audience…they will sustain you. And for Janet, they have indeed.

NOW THE REST OF THE STORY

Here are some other important life lessons & thoughts from Janet Jackson that we can use in our own business life that are simple brilliance:

About Her Drive: “I’m a very competitive person, but I think that’s good.”

Her Decision Making: “To cut off confusion and accept an answer just because it’s too scary not to have an answer is a good way to get the wrong answer.”

Her Associations: “I don’t have a lot of friends.”

Her Perspective: “In complete darkness we are all the same, it is only our knowledge and wisdom that separates us, don’t let your eyes deceive you.”

Her Philosophy: “Fear is the one emotion that unleashed can destroy anything and anyone.”

What Keeps Her Motivated to Press On: “I believe in a higher power, I believe in inspiration.”

Her Advice: “You can never be happy until you understand WHY you’re doing what you’re doing.”

Janet Jackson still remains one of the best selling Artists of all time. She has succeeded against insurmountable odds. And in spite of setbacks, she’s still in “control” of her assets and her Billion dollar brand. And we salute her for continuing to rise even in the midst of unfortunate challenges.

CollaborationCorner

Co-Working Equals Cheap Work Space, Access to Technology & Free Coffee

Startups and Entrepreneurs don’t always do well working from home. Sometimes you need a place to “office” or to connect other like minded individuals. If you live in a major metropolitan area like New York, San Francisco, LA, orAtlanta, you might have heard of the term co-working.

What’s co-working you ask? Well, it’s a new way of working that takes down the walls and gets people OUT and talking to each other!

Co-working is now becoming incredibly popular because it enables entrepreneurs, freelancers, startups and other enterprising individuals to come together in a unique environment that encourages collaboration. Collaboration has been making waves in the educational system and recently has been doing the same in the workspace. Studies have even been done on the benefits of co-working.

If you haven’t’ tried co-working and you’re an entrepreneur, freelancer or work remotely, I recommend you try it. There are some great ones in Atlanta but allow me to recommend my space Kollective South.

Kollective South is located in the hip and eclectic Castelberry Hill section of Atlanta and offers 20 workstations, a conference room and a café area with free tea and coffee for our members. Our ultimate goal is to increase digital literary and bridge the digital divide within our community. Towards that end, we also offer classes for members of the Kollective South Community in a variety of technical competencies from HTML/CS, Wordpress, Mobile development and social media.

The idea of the communi-TECH center is that it will replace the old model of the community centers where kids would go to play after school. A communi-TECH center is a place that is centered around technology that everyone can go to learn critical digital literacy skills. My hope is that the coming years will see Kollective South communi-TECH centers in urban Hubs across the country.

The Hip Hop Enterprise

Earthtone Naturals owner, Tonya Kidd, created EN in 2004 as a hobby after first using pure shea butter for over a year. “I saw my skin transform….stretch marks and scars faded and my skin became soft and even toned, however the scent of the shea butter was unpleasant and the texture was difficult to apply.” Tonya seized the opportunity to turn her hobby into a business when she converted the scent and texture of shea butter with natural oils and vitamins into a whipped and creamy mixture that smelled great and was easy to apply to the skin.

Since then the EN product line has expanded to include body butters, hair butters, body sugar scrubs, hair oils and bath salts. EN products are handmade, reasonably priced, all natural, organic, without fillers or preservatives made with unrefined shea, cocoa butters and seven essential oils for skin and hair such as aloe vera, hemp, vitamin E and other oils. EN has won the support of local customers in Atlanta, GA where EN is based. And has a growing source of customers around the country. Hundreds have shared their testimonials on how their skin and hair has become more healthy, soft and radiant after using EN products. Be sure to check their website at www.earthtonenaturalbeauty.com. Discovering Our Hottest Small Businesses at the Grassroots

From the beginning of Hip Hop culture, the spirit of Entrepreneurship has always existed. With brothers selling incense and oils on the streets, to Dapper Dan making custom made clothes, to mom & pop shops selling records and cassettes. Small businesses have always been an essential part of the Hip Hop community. In Hip Hop we’ve seen small unknown businesses like FUBU, go from brothers selling hats out the back of their cars in New York, to becoming Global Brands. That same Entrepreneurial Spirit still exists today. Numerous people at the grassroots level are dedicated to advancing our culture through their small businesses by providing products and services that enrich the lives of the Hip Hop Community. As a regular Contributor to Black Moguls Magazine, I will feature one of these dynamic small businesses that are an essential part of our community!

In the past 50 years we as a Community have experienced many

1st in our families, as well as a nation. However, this social and

economic progress must continue to expand. The mainstream

media has manipulated many of us onto the path of poverty

through music, television, self-hat red and lack of knowledge in

our own community. Economic empowerment is necessary for the

disparity to cease. We can no longer allow our past history of

racism, employment discrimination, red-lining and other devices to

distract us from our opportunity to amass wealth. It is no longer

a fleeting dream but our reality. Collectively we must navigate

the path and complete the course to prosperity. We have issues

to address but these obstacles will not stop us from obtaining the

goal. We shall not be moved.

Consumerism instead of Investment is a major concern that must be

illuminated. The cultural trend of spending outside of our community

is one of the greatest causes of this disparity. We cannot grow as a

community if we do not spend within our community. The average

dollar only circulates 15 minutes within the community. This must

change. Consistently being a consumer is a deviant behavior meant

to keep us from obtaining wealth. A perfect example is that the

Asian, Jewish and White communities tend to spend money within

their own communities FIRST. It is not racist to support your own

community FIRST. Collectively if we support and uplift our own by

following these same practices, our communities will too become

socioeconomically stable and we will rise. By building and engaging

through New Media Channels such as MOGULS Magazine (Print)

& MogulsLifestyleNetwork.com (Digital Online) we can fortify our

global presence and our financial fortitude. Get a blue print in place

to better manage your own spending. If you have a job, change

your tax withholdings and keep more money in your pocket to

invest by starting a small business. And always educate yourself

with resources found in every edition of Moguls Magazine online

and in Atlanta, Charlotte, Memphis, Columbus, OH and other major

cities across the country AND internationally!

Your Health Is Your WealthBody Beware: All Personal Trainers Are Not Created Equal

It’s several months into 2014 and here’s to your health. Your health is your wealth. You cannot enjoy one without the other. Whether it’s overall fitness or weight loss, taking care of your body is an essential part of insuring your personal legacy. Just like you need financial coaching, a Personal Trainer is a Fitness Coach that will hold you accountable and help you reach your fitness goals.

Many people feel they do not need a Personal Trainer and that they can get in shape on their own. Some people sit on their couch and watch those late night infomercials, promising you that you can get in shape working out only 10 to 25 minutes a day for 90 days. But what you must understand is no two bodies are the same. What works for one person might not necessarily work for the next, even if they are doing the exact same type of workout.

A Fitness Coach or Personal Trainer is a valuable member of your success team. Developing a one on one relationship with your Personal Traineris very important. The time a Trainer spends getting to know you is valuable in helping him or her develop a workout routine specific to your health, body and goals. This is something that an infomercial cannot satisfy.

Let’s take a look at one of the biggest fitness concerns, weight loss. A Certified Personal Trainer can design a workout specific to your current weight and needs. As you make progress, he or she will be able to modify this workout within a few weeks of you being on a regimen. You cannot do this with an infomercial workout in a box type of plan. Next, with any workout plan, you also need to have the proper nutrition. No amount of exercise can work for you if you are not putting the right foods into your body. A Certified Personal Trainer can help you plan your diet or they can work with a Nutritionist who has the knowledge to do so. A weight loss plan is most effective when combined with proper nutrition. Again this is where making the right selection in a Personal Trainer becomes essential.

Aside from keeping you accountable to your fitness goals, as a Certified Personal Trainer, it is my duty to show you how to properly use the equipment in a gym with correct form to prevent injury and so that you get the overall optimal results. Not all Personal Trainers are made equally. Some only know just enough to get by, while others, like myself, have a wealth of knowledge, education and passion. The key to success when looking for a Personal Trainer is to find someone who best fits your goals. For best results, obtain a strong willed trainer who will make you accountable for your actions verses the Trainer who will take your money and won’t care about your results.

3 Important Traits When Interviewing A Personal Trainer

1. Check Your Trainer’s Licensing & Certification. The right credentials let’s you know you are dealing with a Professional.

2. Is Your Personal Trainer Physically Fit? If your Trainer looks a hot mess, what are they going to do for you?

3. Are they a great Coach with the overall passion & knowledge to help you reach your fitness goals? Patience and passion for results makes all the difference in how your relationship is going to jell.

Finally, have some fun and celebrate every win. It’s the little steps that lead to even bigger success.

He studied at the National Per-sonal Training Institute (NPTI) in McDonough, GA and has been a Professional Personal Trainer for 6 years. Social Media is a vast wilderness that has been gracefully mastered by what I would call Social Media Moguls. Although no fatalities have occurred, failure is merely a sign of obliviousness to the existing guidelines to success. Those unable to navigate the trivial terrain assume that crowd influencers hold secrets to the social media world. Much like opening Pandora’s Box those who are newly introduced to any social media aim to satisfy their objectives rather than learning and having fun with these tools. This is often an immediate derailment to productivity because one tries to meet objectives without understanding how the tool they are using functions. Social media is definitely a tool for empowerment. Objectives and goals are very important to have but cannot be used effectively if there is no understanding of the Social Media world.

Beginners become Moguls by focusing on the magic that makes any relationship beautiful instead of spending a bulk of resources identifying cost of customer acquisition and returns on investments. Often we are confused by the magic that occurs when building organic relationships on social media. Disillusioned, the average person focuses on the outcome instead of the effort that a great magician uses to perfect their craft. When analyzing the social media realm I use a model that basically explains the architecture of a social media house. The roof of the house is objectives and goals while the foundation is the realization of various metrics. In my professional opinion the magic occurs in the pillars that hold up the house. The supportive iron casted rods in a social media house include three key elements users, platforms, and content.

Guidelines to success are different for various people. The key to success with social media is finding your niche. Whether engaging an audience on the behalf of your business or your personal brand, you have to discover and create content that is

engaging and impactful. As with any audience you will quickly learn if you meet their standards. A thunderous applause from your audience sounds like retweets, favorites, comments, likes, recommendations and professional inquires about your product or service. Contrarily unsa tisfied customers will provide signs of disapproval. Often this is seen in the loss of followers, negative comments or even worse a silent audience. The impacts of these despairing signs are synonymous with users throwing tomatoes at your brand.

The overly ambitious beginner often tries to digest all statistical data available. As a strategist I am a natural advocate for researching subject areas that improve your social media blueprint. Moguls, also referred to as subject matter experts, understand that the magnitude of your reach cannot be summarized by statistics. Why listen to every single piece of data when your audience is only keystrokes away? This is why I advise my clients to be cautious of chasing every statistic used in social media reports. When asked by a client “Can my demographic be found on social media?” My theory is yes. Whether your audience is large or small they can be captured in the social media atmosphere. Those with small audiences may think that it isn’t worth investing the time or effort, but you could never be so wrong! When approaching smaller audiences it is often less effort to keep them engaged, and it is easier to convert the audience.

Most of my newer clients come to me for ideas wishing to appeal to the masses. A simple way for them to attain this goal is to indulge in a healthy marketing mix. I encourage the newly formed crowd-funding platform to win over the small segments of their target audience because the crowd is guaranteed to follow. As with any healthy diet it is important to understand the various nutrients and vitamins the body needs to function. Just like our bodies, social media platforms naturally equip you with elements for success. This is an easy feat if the correct regiments are introduced to your target market via social media channels. The quickest way to ensure that your social media regiment will be in vain is by the introduction of junk and clutter. Be sure not to scare off your audience with interactions of characters that your audience might frown upon. Also never spam, this is the quickest way to a social media heart attack. Believe it or not your viewers want to support you financially, but rather than battering them with request they prefer to be won over with flattery and charm. This means you need to limit your sales content to 10-15 % with the higher percentage dependent upon how often you post to Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn. Remember your goal is not to sell to customers but to help your friends, your fans, and your audience.

The key to making all these moving parts work together is consistency. While it is not necessary to schedule your every move one should remain a constant force with your audience. They will grow to appreciate your niche to the point of dependency. You don’t want to disappoint your potential customers because those who are in the audience are more likely to give you referrals even if they aren’t your customers yet. Wake up, be alert, and be responsive to every aspect of the social media world because every relationship needs some Tender Loving Care (TLC). Don’t be scared to be a Mogul.Focus on creating magical relationships that will be profitable monetarily and in your success trajectory.

Food 101 Mogul EATS-Publisher’s Exclusive

This column is dedicated to all of our foodies with open minds and discerning palates. Every restaurant appearing in this column has my personal stamp of approval. We hope to bring you many off the beaten path joints that serve up good food designed to tantalize even the pickiest of eaters. One of our goals at Moguls Magazine is to share new ideas that can lead to better habits which means improved lifestyles for our readers. Your health is definitely a part of your wealth. So, get ready for an adven-ture into (vegan) Food 101.–Swan Simpson

The joy of Spring is finally upon us. Warmer weather means it’s time to sit on the front lawn, by the lake or on the beach drinking some homemade lemonade, grilling up some good ole ‘cue (meaning barbecue).

Growing up in Memphis, TN (home of the REAL and the ORIGINAL barbecue) makes me a certified expert in recommending to you where the good stuff can be found. But not all good barbecue is cooked up on grills in my hometown. Some of it is being grilled and baked up in places like Atlanta, Los Angeles, Tallahassee, Chicago and yes even Israel. Did I just say Israel?

Save yourself some work and sweat because you no longer have to pull out your grill to enjoy some tasty mouth watering treats

that will make you slap your abuela (grand-momma). Now all you have to do on those lazy days is just head on down to The Soul Veg Restaurants….and enjoy some barbecued ribs, candied yams, collard greens, mac n cheese and potato salad….

The Soul Veg has locations in various urban cities across the U.S. So, be sure to check google for a location close to you or when you travel.

The Soul Veg (vegetarian) Restaurants are serving up meatless, completely vegan barbecue dishes as a healthy alternative to traditional pork made barbecue. And trust me, they have got the sauce down pat. A good barbeque sauce should have a dark, rich, caramelized color with a sweet, tangy flavor that sticks to the food. The Chefs at the Soul Veg Restaurants have mastered this technique.

Let Food Be Your Medicine

Everything on the menu has a similar look and feel as the common meat versions, but you can enjoy this good food without guilt or violation of any dietary laws because it’s all 100% vegan.

The Soul Veg Restaurants are the largest chain of vegan restaurants in the world and is operated by the Hebrew Israelite Community of Jerusalem.

Enjoy a new twist on your old favorites and explore the flavors of others. The Soul Veg Restaurants has a complete menu of many other soulful dishes; therefore, barbecue is not the only thing that you can sink your teeth into. And please don’t forget the vegan mac n cheese and sides. All followed by the Pastry Chef’s homemade desserts (pineapple upside down cake yes ma’am!) and the Soul Veg’s own signature brand of vegan ice (which also available at most Wholefoods Markets). You can visit the website for my favorite Atlanta location at www.soulvegetarian2.com and every location has its own site because the menu varies. Don’t forget to mention Moguls Magazine. And remember to let food be your medicine. Join the Meat-free Monday Movement. One day can keep the doctor away. Peace and blessings!

I’m stranded in Philly buried in my hotel amongst 2 feet of snow. Seems that I managed to be in the middle of one of the worst winter storms to hit the Northeast. All flights have been canceled and nothing is coming into the city and nothing is leaving out. Trae Dungy and I have attempted to coordinate our schedules for nearly two months and today we are going to finally get it done. Thank goodness for technology and friendship that allows this interview to happen regardless of locale.

I found this particular interview to be one of the most important conversations as we roll out Moguls Magazine. Afterall, Atlanta has been called the Black Mecca and most recently renamed, Black Hollywood. Sincemy company, Swan Simpson Media Group, is also headquartered in the new Black Hollywood; talking movies, money and opportunity seemed to be an important discussion for our inaugural issue of Moguls Magazine.

Many people may not be as familiar with the name Urban Home Entertainment, but most are familiar with the successes that this Independent Distribution Powerhouse has produced.

Names like Tyler Perry and Kevin Hart. Both got their first distribution deals with Urban Home Entertainment.

Urban Home Entertainment or UHE is an Urban Film Distribution Conglomerate located in suburban Atlanta. They are the largest, independently owned Distributor of its type. UHE is also home to such films as the PLANTINUM SELLING Blue Collar alumni RON WHITE’s A Little Unprofessional. Zoe Saldana’s Curse of Father Cardona, Megan Good and Ty Hodge’s Miles From Home, T.D. Jakes’ The Scroll, and the film Streets that features multi-platinum selling artist Meek Mills.

UHE was started out of necessity. The company was founded with the idea of creating an avenue for Urban Producers to get their film or movie into the big chains such as Walmart and Sams Clubs. This takes the movie straight from the Producer directly to the consumer. Direct to Video Distribution has proven to be a huge money maker especially with Urban and Faith based titles.

Having stuck my big toe in the filmmaking world myself, I know the frustrations with dealing with traditional Hollywood. So, I wanted to get down to brass task with Trae Dungy whose father Barrett Dungy founded the company back in 2001. Trae is Acquisitions Director and spends most of his time connecting and directly networking with Producers & Filmmakers from around the world looking for their big breakthrough. I wanted to get inside of his head and find out what most of our readers truly want to know, “How can I get a deal?” or better yet, “How can I get that movie money?”

Trae Dungy himself is a Filmmaker & Producer. He is the Author of the Guerilla Guide to Filmmaking and oversees the

empire he and his father have built together. As the Publisher of Moguls Magazine, I think it’s important that we present

Moguls Power Player

Get That Movie Money-Swan Simpson

Exclusive Interview w/ Trae Dungy

Page 29: Moguls Magazine Issue 1

the mostpowerful images of Black & Latino Entrepreneurs and Families who are indeed running successful enterprises in the U.S. and around the world.

My conversation with Trae was all about How to Get Distribution. I wanted to extract information that would be resourceful and helpful to those seeking to go outside of the blurred lines of traditional Hollywood. It seems that many Black & Latino Producers are finding phenomenal success outside of the Hollywood mainstream. Even my own first little, low budget ghetto style video proved to be a niche based success using the direct to video business model.

Rather than spend time on pomp and circumstance, we got right into the real conversation about how to get into the game and how to win big.

What Are The 5 Most Important Things You Look For When Making The Decision To Acquire A Movie Or Video For Distribution? Our business is highly competitive. So, the better the production, the better their chances of getting a meeting with our team. Some of the important things we look for are the details that Producers sometime overlook. The quality of the production. The script and/or content clearance & rights. The audience. Are there any well known names or talent involved in the production. Bank-ability meaning will it sell.

Where Can A Producer Who Signs With UHE Typically Expect To See Their Movies? We have massive Distribution Partnerships that are not just limited to the traditional routes. Of course we have retailers like Walmart, Sams Club, Walgreens, Family Dollar, Barnes & Noble, Best Buy. But some of our big successes have come with Redbox, Hulu, Netflix, Comcast and distribution channels like these. In addition to those, we are also distributing movies overseas in other countries and all across the continent of Africa. Opportunities with UHE are limitless.

Tell Us What Will Make You Open The Checkbook Right Now? Interesting Urban Titles that make for good entertainment especially those with well known talent have always been our bread and butter and will continue to be a part of our core. We pride ourselves on staying away from Gangster or Drug movies because there is enough of that already out there. We prefer to enlighten and entertain. However, Urban is not the only thing we do. Recently we’ve ventured into Ron White’s Blue Collar market and just won a Grammy. We started Faith werks which now seeks

faith based movies & titles. In fact, we have T.D. Jakes’ The Scroll, which is the 1st faith-based African American documentary to be acquired by Red Box. Then we have our Latin Division which seeks to add movies and video title of interests to our Latino audience. Anything shot well & entertaining whether it has well known talent or not will get our attention. So, having top names is not always important.

Let’s Talk Money. Can A Producer Or Filmmaker Make A Million Dollars Out The Gate? TRUTH PLEASE.

The truth is yes. I’ve seen it done. UHE is in the business of making money for our Producers. We have enough channels and global reach to make this happen. Again, it depends on the quality of the production, who is in the production and the willingness of the Producer to get involved in their own success. Most Producers won’t make a million on their first title. But the money can be a real solid five or six digits depending on the Production. We can analyze the market and see our potential going in.

Does A Producer Have To Wait To Be Paid On The Backend?

No. Our system allows a Producer to cash out upfront or we can structure a deal with cash flow now, cash flow later.

Best Advice You Can Give To Someone Wanting To Make A Deal With UHE?

This is a business treat it as such. Be hungry and willing to make the proper investment upfront in your production. Don’t let the first few doors that close in your face cause you to give up. Believe in what you are doing. Follow your dream until you succeed. Many Producers give up too soon. Present your product well. Take lots of photos and still shots. Behind the scenes video and director’s cuts and actor’s dialog all add value to your production. Know your audience. Set the proper expectations when you have a conversation with us. Make sure all of the paperwork, music clearances, releases are signed and in order.

Swan Simpson Media Group & Moguls Magazine have Partnered with Urban Home Entertainment to get your film, movie and/or video content immediately considered for Distribution by UHE and its subsidiaries.
