About 600 delegates from all over Africaenjoyed three days of information sharing during the 14th Savings and CreditCooperative Associations (SACCA)Congress, held at Sun City last week.This year’s conference highlighted practi

cal techniques and best practices that havebeen applied in providing financial servicesthrough integrating technology to geographically disadvantaged people, excludedfrom the traditional bank services, hence thetheme “Technology accelerating financialinclusion using Cooperative model”.

When cooperative financial institutions(CFI’s) started everything was done manu

ally. With the developments and morepeople being recruited to this movement,technology is seen as the best way to operate smoothly. During the closing ceremonythe Economic Development, EnvironmentConservation and Tourism MEC, Motlalepula Rosho reemphasised that technology isindeed a vehicle which can assist CFI’s toexpand and modernise this financial institutions.The biggest issue that emerged during the

discussions was the legislation and regulation framework. Delegates proposed that itwould be much better to have a regulatorybody that will regulate Sacco’s and CFI’s

in Africa. Annet Nantumbwe from Uganda said it would help a lot if Savings andCredit Cooperatives (SACCO) can havea regulatory body just like CFI’s in SouthAfrica which have the Cooperative Development Agency (CBDA). The AfricanConfederation of Cooperative Savings andCredit Associations (ACCOSCA) executivedirector Mr George Ombado said from hereACCOSCA will engage governments fromdifferent countries to have a regulatoryinstitution. He said the theme of Technology was well elaborated by the presenters.“SACCOs and CFI’s should consider usingtechnology for proper governance and also

to enhance financial inclusion to be able toreach more members and the disadvantagedthrough mechanisms like mobile bankingand mobile money transfers” he said.On the last day of the conference delegates

were given an opportunity to visit CFI’s inthe province to learn more about their movements. The conference ended with an awardceremony for best performing CFI’s in thecountr. Ditsobotla Cooperative Bank tookfirst place and Lotlhakane were second. Thefirst four positions were awarded with a trophy, goodies and a monetary award. PRASSA committed into training these two NorthWest Province cooperatives.

Bikers.....Theword alone invokes images of leather jackets plastered with badges, of tattooed skullsand scantily clad vixens, of mayhem andmischief and marauding malevolence.We often shudder as we think of the thun

derous reverberation their exhausts makeas they announce their arrival in our docile communities, but how often do we thinkof their commercial worth? We should.

A recent study conducted by Prof Melville Saayman from the NorthWestUniversity’s research focus area TourismResearch in Economic Environs and Society (TREES) where they analysed themarketing and economic impact of theAfrica Bike Week, which is held annuallyin Margate, proved that the easy ridersare a lucrative and untapped market.

The Africa Bike week is South Africa’spremier motorcycle event with 25 000 par

ticipants who take part in the festivities.A look at the respondents’ profile shows

that 56% are male, 44% female, 61% speaksAfrikaans, 39% English, the average age atthe Bike Week was 44 and 32% were between the ages of 50 and 64.Of the 474 respondents 64% indicated they

are married. Most of the riders (46%) camefrom Gauteng, followed by KwaZuluNatal(27%). It is evident that they are an educatedniche group with 50% having passed matric,30% have a diploma or degree, 4% a postgraduate degree and 13% have a professional qualification.

A look at their annual gross income andtheir spending power becomes increasinglyapparent: 15% earn less than 20 000 per annum, 21% earn between R20 000 and R140000, 14% between that and R221 000, 13%were ranked between R221 001 and R30500, 11% between R305 001 and R431 000whilst 8% fall between R431 001 and R552000.

Now for the shocker: 18% earns upwardsfrom R552 001.

Furthermore they travel in groups (aver

aging seven to eight) and attend on average5.25 rallies a year. A total of 59% indicatedthat they planned on visiting other touristattractions. A group spends R8 378.78 onaverage for about five nights.

If the number of participants are takeninto account, as well as the average spending figure per group, then the total amountgenerated for the community by the eventaccumulates to R62 722 538.70.

The purchase spending power of motorcycle enthusiasts are underappreciated andlocal authorities, as well as residents, shouldnot scoff at the notion of hosting a biker rally or event.More often than not the feeling of the com

munity is ‘No, we don’t want these peoplehere’ as bikers carry stereotypical labels ofdrinkers and troublemakers. It’s a fallacy.The consensus among the researchers wasthat motorcycle enthusiasts are a sophisticated crowd, as Margate can attest.

They are loath to let go of the event as itcomes with a massive marketing and expen

diture component and it’s a lucrative endeavour for all involved.

For students, honing their skills is ateething process,but the aim of theNorthWest University’s (NWUPuk)Faculty of Law is togive them the molars to clamp downfrom the getgo.

In recent years theFaculty has shiftedits focus towards

imparting studentswith a skillset thatis a more accuratereflection of thatwhich is needed tothrive in the privatesector.

One such an example is the internalmock trial competition for second andthirdyear students.

In 2013, the Faculty hosted its thirdannual instalment ofthe competition thatis geared towardsfilling practical requirement needs thatare essential for anylaw practitioner.The format of thecompetition worksas follows: Twogroups competeagainst each otherwith one group

representing thestate and one groupstanding for the defence. Cases entailrelevant transgressions that regularlyappear in the courtsuch as robbery, assault and possessionof drugs.Each group is given

a body of facts afterwhich they have 24hours to prepare.

The groups are notonly adjudged bytheir prosecutionskills, but are alsoassessed by theirability to work together as a team.

It goes withoutsaying that the competition serves asfar more than to bejust a showcase forstudents’ powers of

persuasion or their argumentative ingenuity.They are honing their skills to present a watertight argument whilst instilling the confidence to do so in front of a high court judge,as was the case this year when judges Leonie Windell and Frits van Oosten presidedover the final round of the competition.

It is an invaluable experience and oneunique to the NWUPuk.

“For too long we have passively sat andlooked at what is wrong. It is time to grabthe bull by the horns and start doing. It istime to walk the talk. That is precisely whatwe are doing here at the NorthWest University’s Faculty of Law,” explains advocateRené Koraan, organiser of the mock trialcompetition and lecturer with an intoxicating fervour for getting the best out of herstudents.

“The question is: Why would a studentparticipate in a mock trial? It requires somesacrifice as the trials take place afterhours.The answer is that they want to, they wantthe exposure. They have a passion for thelaw and they want an opportunity to showtheir worth.”

She attests that brows are being raisedwhen the qualification of law students arebeing discussed. “Law student’s qualifications are being criticised, but we can, withhonesty, say that we as a faculty is doingsomething different. We are making a conscientious effort to empower and providethem with all the practical skills that theyrequire. We hear numerous complaints fromlaw practices about graduated students whodon’t know when to sit or to stand during atrial, how to conduct themselves or how tocompile a complaint sheet. David McQuoidMason, President of the CommonwealthLegal Education Association, said that lawstudents must be taught lawyering skills atuniversity before they undergo practical legal training. We agree.”

These are environmental studies, poverty and inequality analyses and health related issues.On environmental issues he had conducted

studies on land use, deforestation, sustainable land management, climate change andsustainable use of energy. The Poverty andinequality studies focus on poverty decomposition, inequality decomposition, income

impact of HIV and Aids, behaviour change,HIV vulnerability, access to portable water and its association with incidence ofwater borne diseases, impact of malariaon households, health risk assessment andwillingness to pay for health insurance.
