Dit kom nadat een van die hoofingange

na die sakesentrum van die dorp sedert

Vrydag gesluit is, weens die spoorwegbrug

in Lady Greystraat wat gedeeltelik inme-

kaargesak het.

Die dramahet omstreeks 12:00plaasge-

vind instortren. nStutmuurvandiebrug

het ineengestort, wat veroorsaak het dat n

gedeelte van die voetoorgang van die brug

losgeskeur het.

Slegs een voetganger is lig beseer in die

voorval.

Om veiligheidsredes is hierdie gedeelte

van Lady Greystraat gesluit, dus is daar

hir tansgeentoegangna envanafJanvan

Riebeeckrylaan nie.

Reedsvandiestaanspoorafhetverkeers-

probleme ontstaan in die dorp en teen

spitstyd was dit behoorlik chaos.

Die Uitvoerende Direkteur Infrastruk-

tuur en Beplanning van die Drakenstein

Munisipaliteit, Leon Coetzee, het ges dat

die oorsaak van die voorval n kombinasie

is vandie huidige konstruksiewerk aandie

vervanging van die hoofrioolpyplyn, en

swaar renswatoor nkort tydperkneerge-

sak het.

Dieoormatigestormwaterindietydelike

stormwater-omloopkanaal het die stut-

muuraandienoordwestelikekantsestabi-

liteit benvloed en die stutmuur het sonder

enige waarskuwing ingetuimel.

Coetzee het ges datmunisipalewerkers

onmiddellik na die toneel is om die gebied

te beveilig en ondersoek in te stel.

Die aanvanklike evaluering toon dat die

algehele struktuur van die brug nie aange-

tas is nie en dat die skade beperk is tot die

vleuelmuur en aanloop tot die brug asook

die padoppervlak.

Dienodigestruktuurengeotegnieseon-

dersoek is tans aandie gang ombestaande

dienste te beskerm.

Nadat verdere spesialisverslae ontvang

is, sal daarbesluitwordopdiepermanente

herstelmetode.

Die slegte nuus is dat daar geen vinnige

oplossing is vir die herstel vandie brugnie,

dus sal die Lady Greystraatbrug om veilig-

heidsredes tot verdere kennisgewing ge-

sluit bly.

Die publiek word dus herinner dat voer-

tuigtoegang van oos na wes nou slegs kan

geskied via die Markstraat- en Oosbosch-

straat-bre.

Daar gaan dus in die vervolg aansienlike

verkeersvertragings wees weens die opbou

van verkeer en geduld sal gebruik moet

word.Diepublieksalophoogtegehouword

van verwikkeling in verband met die brug

deurmiddelvanaankondigings indiepers.

DIE toekoms van die De Poort-erfenis-

sentruminSuider-Paarlistansonderdie

soeklig weens finansile probleme.

De Poort is gestig met die hoop dat dit

DrakensteinendiePaarl se toerismebedryf

n hupstoot sou gee.

Die grootste trekpleister sou egter die

versameling waens wees wat enig in sy

soort in die Wes-Kaap is.

Die waens sou die geskiedenis van die

wabedryf uitbeeld wat laat in die 19de eeu

een van die mees suksesvolle industri in

die Paarl-streek was.

Aanvanklik was daar ook beplan om on-

der meer n restaurant, koffiewinkel, piek-

niekfasiliteite en kunswinkeltjies in te rig.

Groot planne is sedert 2001 beraam vir

die sentrumwat totdusver rondomR8mil-

joen gekos het en hoofsaaklik met Lotto-

fondse betaal is.

By n inligtingsvergadering wat deur so-

wat 30mensebygewoon is, is die probleme

vandiesentrumbespreekondervoorsitter-

skap van dr Lourens du Toit (raadslid van

die Drakenstein Munisipaliteit).

Hy het gemeld dat De Poort se huurkon-

trak op20September sou vervalweens ag-

terstallige huur (nminimale bedrag). Daar

is ook agterstallige munisipale dienstegeld

van sowat R12 000 asook n uitstaande te-

lefoonrekening. In totaal is De Poort sowat

R30 000 in die rooi.

Di bedrag sluit die eise uit van die ont-

vangervaninkomstevirBTWendiesalaris-

se van De Poort se personeel.

Dieouditeurehet ngekwalifiseerdever-

slaguitgebringvirFebruarie2011.Vir2012

is dit nog uitstaande.

R20 000

MBEKWENI police launched an intensive

search for a five-year-old boy who went

missing on Sunday.

And fears for the boys safety started to

grow after information was received that a

price of R20 000 had been placed on his

head.

The incident occurred when the boy dis-

appeared at 14:30 from near his home in

Langabuya, Mbekweni. According to infor-

mation which the police received, an eye-

witness had seen a 17-year-old girl who

livesclosetotheboysfamily,leadhimaway.

She had allegedly been coaxed by Nigeri-

an men to bring them the boy in exchange

for R20 000.

AccordingtoConstLungiMqakelana,the

girl led the boy away to a place where he

would be exchanged for themoney. TheNi-

gerians however never arrived and the boy

thenmanaged to escape onMondaymorn-

ing.

Theboywasabletolaterpointouthiskid-

napper to police and the 17-year-old girl

WHILEviolent crimes inPaarl andWelling-

ton have stabilised during the past finan-

cial year, Paarl East andMbekweni remain

a concern.

This was revealed last week after the na-

tional crime statistics were released.

Only fourmurderstookplace inthePaarl

(West) area, in com-

parison with 13 in

the previous book

year.AndinWelling-

ton 6 people lost their lives, compared to

14 in 2010/2011.

ButMbekweni paints adifferent picture,

with murders almost doubling from 18 to

30. This figure rose marginally in Paarl-

East, from 20 to 22.

Policeclustermanager,BrigadierGideon

Hagen, said that Paarl East andMbekweni

had unique problems and that violent

crimes such as murder, assault and rob-

beries are increasing.

The cause of this is mainly due to argu-

ments which are often sparked by drug or

alcohol abuse. Uncontrolled squatting in

certain areas causes a policing problem

withhomes beingunmarked and access to

these areas being limited and difficult.

Anotherworrying factor is thenumber of

robberies, especially armed robberies,

which have taken place. Especially busi-

nessesandsofttargetssuchasspazashops

have been targeted.

Residential burglaries have stabilised,

buttherehasbeenaseriousspateofvehicle

theft and theft out of motor vehicles.

Wearesurethatasyndicate isoperating

inthearea.EspeciallyoldermodelsofIsuzu

and Toyota bakkies are targeted. Once the

the large numbers of prisoners who have

been offered early parole and set back onto

the streets, again to lead a life of crime.

Lion Park goes ape

RESCUED lions at the Drakenstein Lion

Park will soon have chimpanzees as

neighbours.

This comes after it was announced that

the nearby Tygerberg Zoo has been forced

to close its gates due to high maintenance

costs and dwindling visitor numbers.

In almost four decades of existence, the

zoo has been home to a variety of animals

and in its heyday was a very popular spot.

Oneof thehugeattractionsof the zoowas

the chimpanzee enclosure.

After negotiations with the Lion Parks

Paul Hart, it was agreed that Hart would

adopt the chimps, together with two tigers,

apairofwhite lions,aswellasotheranimals

such as lamas and marmoset monkeys.

Currently it is a hive of activity at the Lion

Park, with the construction of the large

chimpanzee enclosures under way.

Harthasbecomerenowned for the rescue

of captive bred lions worldwide. Most of the

lionswhichhehas rescuedwere rearedand

kept in appalling conditions.

AsanctuaryhasbeencreatedattheDrak-

enstein Lion Park were these lions can live

out the rest of theirdaysascloseaspossible

to their natural habitat.

In a perfect world we would like to have

theselionsintegratedbackintotheirnatural

terrain, but this is almost impossible. They

have never learnt to hunt and will be

shunned, if not killed by other lions.

NowHartwill alsobe father to eight chim-

panzees.

This is a brand new ball game for me.

Chimps are much more high maintenance

animals than lions.

Lionsarequitehappytosleepalldayand

one basically just has to give them enough

space, shade and food. They are pretty lazy

animals. But chimps are a different story.

Hart said that chimpanzees need to con-

tinuously be stimulated and kept busy.

Wewill constantly have to deviseways to

entertain them. If thisdoesnothappen they

can get extremely bored and depressed.

Six chimpswill bekept together ina5000

m enclosure, while another two will be in a

separate 2000 m enclosure.

One cannot just put chimps together.

They have a very complicated social struc-

ture and dont take kindly to newcomers.

This project is a long term commitment,

aschimpscanreachanageofover60years.

Hart emphasised that Chimp Haven will

notbeapettingzooorusedforbreedingpur-

poses.

Allmyanimalsaresterilised.Iamoffering

theseanimalsacomfortableenvironmentto

live out the rest of their days.

The tiger camp is almost complete and it

even featuresasmall lake,as thesecats love

water. They are expected to arrive early next

month.

The relocation of the chimpswill however

takelonger,asHartsstaff isslowlybutsure-

ly being introduced to them at Tygerberg

Zoo. Chimp Haven will officially be open to

the public on 16 December.

Man sentenced for

Rennies robbery

LUPHUMLO Nomqolo was recently sen-

tenced to 15 years imprisonment for a rob-

bery which took place onRennies Farm on

the Wemmershoek Road in March 2011.

And before Nomqolo was arrested, he

committed another robbery in Bellville, for

which he has been sentenced to 10 years

imprisonment. A police spokesperson wel-

comed the good sentences which were

handed down on Nomqolo.

Year at the EquusAwards ban-

quet held at Emperors Palace

in Johannesburg.

At the age of one and a half,

Variety Club was sold to busi-

nessman Marcus Jooste and

his training continued under

the watchful eye of renowned

trainer Joey Ramsden.

The three-year-old stallion

hasthusfarscooped15prestig-

ious trophies, including the

Cape Guineas and the Gold

Challenge, with a promise of

many more to come.

VarietyClub is likely to go on

to sire many champions.

by champion horses such as a

previous SA champion bred by

his father, Prince Florimund.

These animals fascinated

me from an early age and all I

ever wanted to do was breed

horses. I toowanted to produce

champions like my father.

icated himself to breeding the

best possible race horses.

Race horse breeding is a to-

tal addiction. It hasmuch to do

with pairing the right mare to

the right sire to get a good com-

bination out of their best char-

acteristics. But lady luck also

plays a big role.

I can immediately see when

a foal is born,what its potential

is going to be.

THE streets of Paarl have definitely not been paved with gold of late,

but ratherpot-holes.And the latestdramawhichhasseverelyaffected

a large number of commuters, is the Lady Grey Street railway bridge

which has been closed due to the partial collapse of the bridge.

This was due to both construction work on the new bulk sewerage

system which is taking place around the bridge, as well as a sudden

heavy downpour which destabilised a pillar.

Butagealsoplaysa role, asPaarl isheading towards its350thanni-

versary. Yes, the public is quick to complain about roads which they

feel are not adequate. Problem areas are often dealt with rapidly by

theDrakensteinMunicipality,buttheninquieterareas,problemroads

may be overlooked.

The bottom line remains that roads in the Western Cape are by far

the best in the entire SouthAfrica. And that is quite a feat, as national

funding for the Western Cape is also the lowest of all provinces.

Gauteng is renowned for its giant potholes inurbanareas.Mpuma-

langa has similar problems. In KwaZulu-Natal, one of this provinces

major tourist routes hugging the Drakensberg and the only access

route to the once flourishing hive of resorts, is now only accessible

to 4 x 4 vehicles. This has directly contributed to tourism dwindling

here and resorts shutting their doors.

So, in hindsight, we must be thankful that we at all have roads to

drive on, and in most cases, they are good.

Where the streets have no name

I CANNOT imagine what inspi-

red our teacher to take twenty

seven-year-olds to a jam facto-

ry, but in our small world my

first school outing to theJones

factory inPaarlSouthwasahu-

gely exciting expedition.

The details of that field trip are

fragmentary: I can recall the noi-

se, the rowsandrowsof gleaming

tins, us clamberingupastairway

ontoahighsteelwalkwaywiththe

factory far below; and of course

the highlight of the daywas a bag

filled with freshly printed jam la-

bels,atinoffruitcocktailandexo-

tically tiny samples of jam.

H Jones & Co in Suider Paarl

was built in 1910 at a time when

prospects for the local wine in-

dustry were very poor and far-

mers were encouraged to plant

deciduousfruitorchardsinstead.

Jam factories sprung up in Wel-

lington, Paarl and Stellenbosch.

In lateryearsHJones&Copro-

ducedjams,preservesandtinned

vegetablesforthelocalandexport

markets.

Some brands like All Gold, can

stillbeseenonsupermarketshel-

ves, while others like IXL, Silver

Leaf andVictoriaFalls are less fa-

miliar.

By the 1950s the jam factory

was one of the largest employers

in Paarl, and provided work for

more than 2 000 people during

the fruit season.

Workingconditions in factories

were often harsh and subject to

few legislative restrictions, and

during the1940sand1950scan-

ning factories like H Jones & Co,

unionsliketheFruitandCanning

WorkersUnionbegantomobilise

workers to improve working con-

ditions on the shop floor.

The interesting thing about H

Jones & Co was that it was not

a South African company, but a

subsidiary of an Australian com-

pany called Henry Jones IXL.

In 1910 the company sent the

27-year-oldHowardHopeJust to

SouthAfrica to establish a subsi-

diary inPaarl, andhebecame the

Paarl factorys first managing di-

rector.

H Jones & Company was star-

ted by Henry Jones in Hobart,

Tasmania in 1891. The company

was later known as Henry Jones

IXL, the IXL referring to Jones

personal motto I excel at every-

thing I do.

Henry Jones was born in 1862

inHobart toWelsh parents. After

receivinganominaleducation,he

startedworkingata local jamfac-

tory at the age of 12.

HisfirstjobinGeorgePeacocks

jam factorywas topaste labels on

jamtins.Hegraduallyworkedhis

way up the factory floor, and in

1885 he was promoted to factory

foreman.

In 1889 when George Peacock

retired,HenryJonesandtwosha-

reholders bought the company,

and renamed it H Jones & Com-

pany. The company eventually

opened factories in Australia,

New Zealand and South Africa.

Jones became one of the

driving forces in the Tasmanian

economy, andhadbusiness inte-

rests in tin mining, saw mills,

shipping and farming, and also

became active in public life.

He was knighted in 1919 and

wasoftencaricaturedinthepress

as the Knightof theJamTin.He

died in 1926 at the age of 64.

Today the All Gold brand has

found its way into the Tiger

Brands stable.

The brands famous tomato

sauce dates back to the founding

of the Jones factory in Paarl and

wascreatedbyaScottishchemist

John Semble.

unieke terroir en ons landgoedere hul spe-
