עד ממחרת השבת השביעת תספרו חמשים יום והקרבתם מנחה חדשה לה'

Our פרשת אמור ,פרשה, discusses the ימים טובים that are celebrated throughout the Jewish calendar year. When discussing the יום טוב of שבועות, the תורה says: והקרבתם מנחה חדשה לה", you shall offer a new meal offering to ה‘ ." This "new meal offering" is what is known as the "שתי הלחם", Two Loaves. י“רש explains that the תורה is referring to the מצוה that the offering on שבועות must come from the new year's wheat crop. Rabbi Frand quotes the כלי יקר, who offers a novel interpretation for these words. He suggests that the new meal offering" alludes to the day of“ ,מנחה חדשהthe giving of the תורה. What the תורה is referring to by calling the קרבן of שבועות a new meal offering is the obligation to view the תורה as new to us; as if it were given to us every day, and today is another day we received it from הר סיני. In other words, the קרבן that symbolizes the essence of the יום טוב of שבועות is a "new meal offering." שבועות represents the day equates with the idea that תורה was given and תורה"every day it should be fresh in your eyes." learning is not a subject that is without תורהinnovation. While הלכה never changes, there is always something new to discover when plundering the depths of the תורה. There is always a “חידוש”, novelty, to be found in its פסוקים. The תורה must be a "מנחה חדשה", a fresh meal offering. If the תורה wanted to pick one offering to symbolize the essence of תורה, it could chose nothing more appropriate that the new meal offering. The example our רביים always gave us was to watch how a בר מצוה boy puts on The excitement, the dedication to detail that .תפיליןis shown when putting them on the first few times is how we are instructed to approach our daily service to ה‘ and especially תורה learning. Find the freshness and joy in being a תורה Jew. The כלי יקר points out that שבועות is unique among all the ימים טובים in that there is no specific calendar date associated with it. פסח is the 15th of יום ,ניסן יום טוב and so forth. Each ,תשרי is the 10th of כיפורhas an exact date and time. שבועות has no set day. It is merely 50 days after the second day of פסח. 5TH Grade Satellite Project We kicked off our Second Annual Satellite Project as part of our new Space Science Unit in 5th Grade. Rabbi Efrayim Clair and Rabbi Dov Hochbaum, our school’s educational technologists worked together with Penina Richman, our school’s science coordinator, to craft a three part session where children learned all about satellites. In doing so, the chil-dren also navigated the topic of how GPS systems work. One station used compasses to replicate GPS triangula-tion. This session helped students under-stand how a GPS system can locate where a person is on a map in real time. Another station allowed children to build a working satellite dish to observe how signals from the satellite in orbit is received from Earth. A third station helped students visu-alize gravity, helping students understand the nature of how satellites orbit around the earth. Utilizing the ap-proach of the Maker Movement that involves learning by creating, stu-dents practiced Next Generation Science concepts in a tangible and ex-citing format. Our Space Science Unit incorporates key STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) concepts throughout its curriculum and was de-signed by our teachers, Penina Richman our science coordinator, and Mrs. Jenni Levy, our Lower School General Studies Principal in consulta-tion with experts in the field and best practices. After two years of prep-aration and design, our students are really enjoying it and learning more

than we even imagined. It culminates in both this hands on learning experience and a research paper. In this unit there are both traditional labs and computer based lab experiences. A vital component of the new science curriculum is the embedding of technological skills in this unit. Our educational technologists introduced the new unit to our students and helped students learn how to utilize Google Spreadsheets to chart key information and patterns in space. Our

science coordinator, Penina Richman, after conducting extensive research and attend-ing Next Generation Science Conferences with the Bergen County Supervisors and Principal Association and visiting Fair Lawn Public Schools, oversaw the crafting of the unit. She also wrote one of the key lessons in the unit about gravity by having students build parachutes. One of our 5th Grade

teacher, Sari Kopitnikoff wrote a fantastic lesson utilizing the latest tech-nology to look at stars in the night sky. Another one of our esteemed teachers, Esther Secemski created a research paper that combined all of the elements needed for students to learn how to conduct 21st Century research and their new knowledge of Space. Mrs. Acosta graciously wrote the introductory lesson to this paper. The children are loving this new assignment as it accents the information they have already begun to learn and allows them to hone in and become “experts” in one key ar-ea. We believe this new approach to science that combines inquiry based learning with STEM and writing will further prepare our students for Middle School and create a culture of inquiry beyond the classroom.
